<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

"DEVICE ENSURING THE COMPLETE COMBUSTION OF FUELS RICH IN VOLATILE MATERIALS IN DOMESTIC AND INDUSTRIAL FIREPLACES OR OVENS."
The usual stoves, in particular those used in the construction of cooking stoves, buulangers ovens, central heating boilers, etc ...,.
EMI1.1
:) (., u ..... ùr 1..8. nT, a grid of eléi; nzaire shape on which the fuel rests and that the combustion air passes through from the bottom to the top. In the fireplaces thus formed , combustion air is admitted in sometimes insufficient quantities, sometimes in excess, even when the fuel supply
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
is carried out by frequent loading.
This results in incomplete combustion which manifests itself in abundant smoke, a mixture of water vapor and combustible gases. The tars are deposited on the walls of the chimney. When the rain penetrates inside this chimney or, again, under the action of the humidity given off by the fuel, the soluble parts of the tars can run off, impregnate the walls and stain them.
The aim of the present invention is to avoid these drawbacks and to achieve total combustion, that is to say the elimination of unburnt gases, smoke and tars. To this end, the invention consists in preceding the actual hearth with a preliminary hearth in which the fuel load, in this case wood, is progressively subjected to the action of the fire, hardly charring. gradually and arrives in the state of carbon in the lower zone in which the air admission takes place.
Other characteristics of the invention will be described below with reference to the accompanying drawing by way of example only.
FIG. 1 shows in vertical section an embodiment of a fore-hearth according to the invention.
FIG. 2 schematically shows the assembly of this fore-hearth in combination with a kitchen stove.
FIG. 3 shows in a similar way the assembly of said fore-hearth with a central heating boiler.
FIG. 4 schematically represents the combination of a fore-hearth with a baker's oven.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Figure 5 shows schematically the application of the fore-hearth as a producer of hot air for drying wood.
According to FIG. 1 the fore-hearth is constituted by a sheet metal tank 1, extended upwards by a hopper, the whole forming a column of any section, provided with a bottom, and in the upper end of which is formed a loading opening closed by a cover 3. The inner wall of the tank 1 is lined at its base with a refractory lining 4. This tank can also include a double metal wall, forming jacket for cooling by circulation of air or water, for example. In the lower part of the tank 1, a horizontal nozzle 5 is provided which penetrates the mass of the fuel and comprises a control valve or butterfly 6.
Facing the nozzle of the nozzle 5-, the tank 1 is connected to a horizontal outlet pipe 7, internally lined with a refractory lining and comprising a tube 8 for the admission of secondary air. This tube also includes an adjustment valve or butterfly 9, which can be coupled to the butterfly 6. The bottom of the fuel column, entering the outlet pipe 7 forms a landslide slope. However, according to the invention, it is essential that the tube 8 for the admission of the secondary air is arranged and oriented such that the air jet strikes the surface of the embankment of incandescent coal. At the bottom of the tank 1 is provided a side door 10 for cleaning.
The length of the flame coming out of the pipe 7 can be adjusted at will by the position of the butterflies 6 and 9. Thanks to the permeability of the fuel used,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the admission of primary air and secondary air can take place under the action of the natural draft of a chimney.
The shape and length of the outlet pipe 7 are chosen so that it is possible to connect the fore-hearth to the chamber to be heated. To obtain a flame of constant length and nature, it is of course necessary to reload the hopper 2 before the fuel level has fallen enough for the distillation to be initiated there.
It will be understood that with this very simple device, in which the fuel progressively penetrates into the high temperature zone, which is moreover very narrow, the dosage of the primary air in relation to the secondary air can be determined for a given fuel d 'such that after adjusting the butterflies 6 and 9 as a function of the desired flow rate, combustion is obtained without smoke and without significant excess air.
In a fore-hearth of the type described above, it is possible to advantageously use wood waste, and more particularly, wood intended for vehicle gasifiers.
FIG. 2 shows the application of the fore-hearth according to the invention to kitchen stoves. These stoves are generally designed for mixed use, ie they can be fired with wood or coal. For the latter case, the dimensions of the hearth are reduced by adding plates.
It is known that these stoves consume large quantities of wood and heat poorly. Indeed, each time they are recharged, the new charge of
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
wood forms a screen between the hotplate and the incandescent embers which rest on the grate. Before igniting, fresh wood emits thick fumes which entrain combustible material which is lost for heating. After a while, this fresh wood catches fire, forming flames which lick the hotplate and the side walls of the fireplace. These flames develop an intense heat that weakens fairly quickly, the wood turning into glowing embers. Radiant heating then occurs.
At the end of this, it becomes necessary to reload the hearth with fresh wood which then constitutes a new screen.
However, it is known that by gasifying the fuel and by burning the gas in a burner substituted for the grate, approximately half of the calories are recovered. However, the gasifier is relatively dangerous owing to the harmfulness of the gas and it requires the use of a fan to produce the draft and to discharge the gas with sufficient pressure.
The fore-hearth according to the invention offers the same advantages as the gasifier, but eliminates the drawbacks thereof. Indeed, it ensures the continuity of heating, facilitates the regulation of the temperature and the combustion, ensures the total suppression of fumes and allows a considerable saving of fuel. On the other hand, it eliminates the danger of harmful gases and does not require any fan, since sufficient draft can be ensured by a chimney.
According to FIG. 2, which shows only one non-limiting example of assembly, the outlet pipe 7 of the fore-hearth is bent upwards in order to be able to be connected.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
at the bottom of the actual hearth 11 of the kitchen stove.
But, of course, we can give to. the outlet pipe a shape and dimensions such that it is possible to adapt it to stoves of all models and all sizes. For cooking in the countryside, this pre-fireplace very advantageously replaces the gas kitchen in towns.
Central heating boilers of current construction consist of a double-walled tank forming a water circulation jacket. In the bottom of this tank is placed a grid on which the coal rests.
It is known that a device thus arranged is suitable only for very lean coals, anthracite or coke. Even with fuels low in volatile matter, there are losses through unburnt: distillation gas or incomplete combustion gas. It was possible to compensate for these losses using push-type hearths or blown-air semi-gasifier. But these complicated and expensive devices require the use of motive power and are not suitable for wood.
On the other hand, the fore-hearth according to the invention offers the same advantages, while being of simple construction and assembly. For assembly (figure 3), the outlet pipe 7 can keep the shape shown in figure 1 and it suffices to make it penetrate into the hearth of the boiler 12 through the ashtray door, after removing the grid of this boiler. . All parasitic air inlets are avoided by plaster gaskets or by a thermally insulated sheet metal plate which connects exactly to. the pipe 7, on the one hand, and to the frame of the boiler ashtray door, on the other hand. The
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
regulator of the latter is connected by a kinematic control to the butterflies 6 and 9 of the fore-focus.
In conventional baker's ovens, heating takes place only by convection when they are at the top, which is the most frequent case. Under these conditions, the screen formed by the freshly loaded fuel produces a less harmful effect than in cooking stoves or boilers. But the thick smoke which escapes from the chimney of a baker's oven shows that the combustion is very poor and that the losses by unburnt are considerable.
In this case again, the fore-hearth according to the invention, thanks to the great length of the flames and the precise proportioning of the primary air in relation to the secondary air, makes it possible to obtain complete combustion with a minimum excess of oxidizer. This results in automatic heating and great fuel economy, as well as the elimination of the painful handling of the embers on the grate.
In the usual arrangement of fireplaces, this embers can only heat the vault and produce no useful effect. However, it contains almost a third of the heat capacity of the wood used. Fresh wood loaded on the grate of a fireplace with overheated walls begins by emitting more or less combustible vapors which, not burning, are lost. Moreover, during recharging, the hearth cools down considerably. The losses are so considerable that with the fore-hearth according to the invention, it is possible to achieve a saving of wood greater than a third. This fore-hearth also offers all the advantages of oil heating, while avoiding noise and
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
motive power expenses; as well as the real danger posed by the use of fuel oil.
Finally, the furnace is not blackened by carbon black particles from incomplete combustion of the oil.
FIG. 4 shows one form of implementation of this combination. The outlet pipe 7 of the fore-hearth can be extended by a short rising chimney 13 terminated by an orientable curved spout called: gueulard 14, which is made to emerge inside the baker's oven.
It can be seen that, in the applications described above, adaptation to the devices for use can be done without any modification of the construction of the latter.
FIG. 5 shows a device for drying wood comprising a fore-hearth according to the invention. In this case, the fore-hearth can be connected to the hearing of a maia fan, for drying small quantities of wood, the operation can be ensured by natural draft as shown. Thanks to the great permeability of the mass of wood, it suffices to provide a chimney with a very low height. To this end, the outlet pipe 7 is extended by a rising duct 15, the outlet orifice of which is capped with a cap or deflector 16, through which the hot gases are deflected horizontally and radially.
The rising duct 15 opens into the bottom of a box 17, below a slatted bottom 18, on which the load of wood to be dried rests. The lower part of this box 17 is formed by a hollow cone 19, the top of which is pierced with an opening providing passage to the duct 15 and leaving around the latter an annular space 20 for
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
admission of tertiary air. The hollow cone acts as a diffuser for the distribution of hot gases, and as a mixer for these gases and the tertiary air. This gazo @ x mixture enters the mass of wood through the slatted bottom and escapes through the top of the body 17.
Of course, the construction methods indicated have been described only by way of non-limiting examples and, without departing from the principle of the invention, all the desired construction modifications can be made thereto.
