<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
'
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"APPARATUS FOR CONTROL OF SIGNALS ANNOUNCING A DIS-
TANCE DETERMINED FOR THE PASSING OF A TRAIN ".
The present patent relates to an apparatus dimensioned by the bead of the wheels of a locomotive or of a railroad car or wagon and intended to control light or acoustic signals or both at the same time, installed at crossings at this level in order to to warn the road user of the approaching level crossing concerned, of a train still located at a determined distance from it.
The device envisaged consists of a time relay consisting of a cir cylinder fitted with a piston, the lifting of which, controlled by the passage of the bead of the wheel, makes it possible by storing a certain quantity of air in the cylinder of the leash. will then escape through an opening with adjustable flow causing the return stroke of the piston during which the closure of an electrical circuit allowing the remote operation of the signals envisaged beforehand operated during the ascent of the control lever actuating the piston of the

air pump.
The time of the return stroke of the cylinder piston or the air pump is set to allow the train to travel the distance between the control unit and the level crossing concerned plus the distance of the longest train at the end of the line. beyond the planned level crossing.
In order to bring out the above description more clearly, the appended drawings represent by way of explanation and not by way of limitation an embodiment of an apparatus envisaged in accordance with the subject of the invention.
For this purpose, fig.I shows a front elevational view of the apparatus adapted for example to the outer left rail according to the drawing of a railway track. FIG. 2 the positions taken by the members of the apparatus shown in FIG. 1 when the bead of a wheel hits the pedal controlling the operating lever.
Fig.3 shows a front elevational view of the device in operation, the train having passed and the level crossing ready to return to the position of fig.I (rest).
Fig.4 a plan view of Fig.I.
Las fig. 5 and 6 show on a larger scale views of the front and rear faces of the mechanism itself 'of the apparatus.
Fig.'7 and 8 represent views of cross-sections on a larger scale and in plan along AB fig.I and CD fig.3.
Figs. 9 and 10 represent views of cross-sections on a larger scale and in elevation according to EF fig.I and GH.fig.3.
Fig. II an elevational view of a construction detail.
Referring to the figures above, 1 shows the frame or U-shaped farm frame or the like of the apparatus on one end of which are arranged attachment means 12 and 13 allowing it to be fixed to the skate. rail such as 11.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
At 3. the control lever is articulated, one end of which is articulated at 4 by means of a yoke 5 extending by a rod 8 of adjustable length sliding in a guide piece 6 integral with the fastener 13, provided. a return spring 9 and a pedal 10. Another parallel rod 7 fixed to the pad 10 also slides in the guide 6 to prevent the pedal 10 from moving angularly.
Between the frame .1 and the operating lever2 is interposed a return spring 14 intended to return the lever 2 as will be explained later. The other end of the lever
2 penetrates through slots in the uprights of a U-shaped fitting 15 fixed to the chas'sis 1 through this fitting and which normally bears by its end 17 on the control rod 18, 'of an electric switch 19 whose circuit
20-21 east, connected to the signaling devices placed at the level concerned.
On the part of the lever 2 moving in the fitting 15 is arranged a leaf spring 29 carrying a lug or journal. & 0 'susceptible to engage in a perforation 35 of the lever 2. The free end of the spring 29 is retained by a stop 41 integral with the lever 2. The head of the journal or lug 30 opposite its free end is in contact with a plate
40 profiled in the form of a cam and integral with the rod 22 of the piston housed in the air cylinder 23 by means of a bush 47 fixed to the base of the rod 22.
The air cylinder 23 fixed to the frame is provided in its lower part with a suction valve (not shown) and with a needle valve or the like 24 with an adjustable flow rate by or the air sucked upwards; of the piston will be forced outwards for a longer or shorter time depending on the position of the adjustable flow device 24, when the return springs 25 return the piston to its starting position in the bottom of the cylinder 23.
The lever 2 also carries another lug or pin 16 disposed in front of the first 30.
The piston rod 22 bears at its base and is integral with the.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
bush 47 besides the cam-shaped plate 40 a cross member 26 joined by two return springs 25 and provided with a bend followed by a vertical part 27 which follows another horizontal part 28 penetrating through a slot in one of the uprights of the fitting 15. This part 28 is in contact with the profiled part 43 of a lever 42 pivoting at 45 and provided for this effect with a return spring 46. The end 44 of this pivoting lever 42 is intended to form a retaining stop for the lever ± by engaging under the latter as will be explained below, see fig. 9 and 10.
Lateral to the crossmember 26 fig. 11 there is a tab 48 directed downwards and carrying at 37 the articulation pivot of a swash plate
31 oval in shape and provided with a return spring 38. This plate 31 has in its central part a slot 39 through which passes the body of a retaining bolt 36 also engaged on the tab 48 above the pivot 37.
The plate 31 has at its periphery the cutouts 33 and 33 '. The bottom of the cutout 33 is provided with a projecting part 50 in the form of a hook under which the movable journal
30 is engaged as will be explained below. The cutout 33 '' serves to house the journal 16 when the device is at rest.
On the fitting 15 forming the frame of the device is placed a cover or box 52 drawn in dotted lines in Fig.1,3,3 and intended to protect the device.
The operation takes place as follows:
The device is presented as shown in fig. I in the idle state, that is to say that the level crossing is free. If the wheel of a locomotive is presented as shown in fig. 2, the bead of the wheel will push down the pedal 10 and consequently will cause the lever 2 to swing into 3, the movable journal 30 of which is at this moment engaged under the hook. 50 of the plate 31. The coil 2 directed upwards leaves by its end 17 the pusher 18 of the switch 19
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
which therefore closes circuit 20-21 supplying the signaling devices arranged at the level crossing concerned.
By continuing its upward travel, the movable journal 30 raises the plate 31 and the latter by its pivot 37 the tab 48 and the latter, the central bush 47 carrying the. crossmember 26 and in which sleeve 47 is wedged the rod 22 of the piston of the air pump:
The piston 'thus driven by its rod 22 stores air until the moment when the movable pin 30 urged by its return spring 29 sliding under the pressure of the latter on the plate 40 forming a cam, is withdrawn from below. of the hook 50 of the plate 31, which immediately swings to the left under the effect of the spring 38 while the lever 2, still under the pressure of the bead of the wheel, has been thrown upwards, and held in this position by the introduction into its return path, from the end 44 see fig.IO of the lever-43 which has pivoted into 45 under the effect of its spring 46 as soon as part 28 of the cross member 26-27 has been supported lifted at the same time as the piston rod 22 and thus lost contact with it,
49 / with the end 43 .of the lower part, of the lever 42.
The drive of the plate 31 by the movable journal 30 ceases approximately towards three-quarters of the way up the lever 2.
Fig. 9 shows how its various components looked like before lever 2 was raised. At this time, see fig * 3 lever 3 is held up and pedal 10 is kept lowered and the various wheels of the convoy pass above pedal 10 without worrying about the mechanism *
At this moment the lever 2 is retained despite its return spring 14 on the end 44 of the lever 42, while the piston rod 22 urged by the return springs 25 begins to descend very slowly depending on the size of the flow rate. the outlet air regulated by device 24,
'
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
At one point, when the end 28 goes down with the piston sliding on the profiled part 43, the lever 42 will assume the position (fig. 9, which will have had the consequence of making the contact 44 of the lever 2 and thus allowed to fall back to resume the position of fig.1,9.
During the fall of the lever ±, its journal 16 by sliding on the part 51 of the periphery of the plate 31 will have caused the latter to swing to the right around 37 by compressing the spring 38, which will have the effect of presenting the opening 33 in the path of the movable journal 30, which pushed by the cam 40 passes through the perforation 35 of the lever 2, protrudes from the latter to finally come back to engage 'under the spout 50, of the plate 31 and thus be disposed to raise again the air pump and be ready to operate again.
At the same time the end 17 of the lever. 2 by leaning on the rod 18 controlling the switch to open the circuit 20-31 which brought the arrangement of the signals to the level crossing and consequently made it free .
The device is then ready again to repeat the same operation if. another train appeared in front of the device.
