<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>

Néanmoins,si, dans sa course ascendante,cette glissière passe, sans la toucher, au delà de la roue équipée de tiges 33,alors que les barrières n'auraient pas encore commencé à monter,il pourrait arriver(par quelque hasard) que, subite- ment,cette glissière renversât son mouvement et commençât à descendre,par suite d'une tension provoquée du fait d'un se- cond train entrant au même instant dans la section du passa- ge à niveau;

Automatic closing and reopening of level crossings by the train itself and at a predetermined distance.
The present invention relates to a mechanism ensuring the automatic closing and reopening of level crossings, carried out by the train itself, the locomotive of which can, at a predetermined distance, from three to five kilometers for example, close the barriers of level crossings, and, at the same time, activate several conventional signals, both visual and acoustic.
In this way, at a suitable distance from the level crossing, the locomotive's whistle is activated automatically either continuously or intermittently, at the same time as the bells installed at the level crossing gates sound. prolonged; then, after a sufficient interval of time, the barriers close slowly, until they return to the fully closed position, at the same time that several signs appear.

luminous mechanical gnales, so as to be perceived both at night and during the day by the driver of the locomotive as well as by the drivers of road vehicles, and to reveal to all whether the way is clear or not.
After the train has passed the level crossing, the gates are automatically reopened and fixed to their "free passage" position, the whistle and bells cease to function and the signals for vehicles and trains are reset to their normal position.
This device, which is absolutely mechanical and automatic, does not require any electric current or any service from the personnel.
The description which will follow and the accompanying drawings, which graphically embody the invention, describe and represent, by way of illustration but not limitation, an exemplary embodiment.

Figs. 1 and 2 show a box, terminated by a slit 2, which can be covered in any suitable manner. In this boot, the rod 3, which actuates the entire device, is placed in a sliding housing.
The box is fixed close to the track, at a sufficient distance (which can be determined in advance) from the level crossing, that is to say from two to.oinq kilometers, or even from - vantage.
This rod, thanks to cylinders 4-4 and 5-5, can slide between two pairs of converging control rods 6-6,
7-7, arranged in the box (see figure 6 and 7), ot it rotates around axis 8 at the same time as it is constantly pulled upwards by one or more springs 9.
By means of a special arrangement, not shown in the drawing, the angle of inclination of the rod in the horizontal position can be adjusted. This control rod carries, at its ex-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
end, two cylinders 10-10, intended to be buffered by the device adapted to the locomotive, as will be seen below; its lower end is attached to a group of powerful springs 11 which are themselves attached to the operating wire 12.
At a suitable distance from the boot 1, which houses this arrangement, and below it, is arranged a smaller box 13 (see figures 5 and 7), in which spring locks 16-16 are placed at the points 16'-16 ', so as to be .by the action of the springs, constantly pushed upwards, protruding, through a suitable slot, at the. bottom of the box 1, which makes them fulfill the function of stops against any backward movement of the control 3, when the latter is in the position drawn in dotted lines in Figures 1 and 7.
These locks 16-16 are firmly fixed to the angle irons 17-17, on which the controls 15-15 act, which are fixed to the axis 14, when part of the time regulator 24 (as one will see it later) acts at a certain moment on the small lever 19, which is firmly fixed to this axis 14, in order to lower the locks 16-16 and, in short, to give free passage to the rod control 3, for its return to its original position. A spring 18, acting on the axis 14, normally maintains the lever 19 in a horizontal position. Appropriate end stops 20-20 are placed in suitable places in box 1 to absorb the shocks of movements of control 3.
The control wire 12, passing through the control pulley 21, divides into two branches of which the one, 22, ends at the time regulator 24, which is placed next to the boot 1 and close to the most small box 13, while the other branch is attached, passing through a series of pulleys 21'-21 ', to the mechanism adapted to the gates 25 of the level crossing and operating the barriers as well as the bells and the various alarm signals.
-% 09 Note that appropriate springs 62 and 63
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
are inserted in series into each of the aforementioned branches so as to attenuate the traction exerted when the rod 3 is actuated by the device adapted to the locomotive, as will be seen below.
Various arrangements are attached to the gateways of the level crossing (fig. 13 and 14). On the walls of the barrier gate is fixed a rotating axis or handle 29, firmly attached to the balance 30 of the barrier 31, which balance is provided with a counterweight 32. Said axis also carries a drum. 33 with crazy movement at the periphery of which a certain number of hooks 34 stand in a radial direction. When this drum (or wheel) (fig.l3) is turned from right to left, its rotation is done freely around the axis 29, but when it is rotated clockwise, it engages with this axis, thanks to the needle 35 and the toothed wheel 36, which is fixed to said axis 29 and can make turn the latter, and therefore turn the balance 30.
A toothed wheel 37, which is firmly fixed to the axle, at a certain distance from the drum 33, acts in cooperation with a double lock 39, fixed by the counterweight 38; this wheel rotates around the axis, and this double lock closes the latter so as to protect the balance 30 from opening or closing inadvertently.
For this purpose, the double lock 39 has two arms 41 and 42, which form an angle so that, in either of the two positions of the lock, one or the other of the arms is horizontal and well in the path. of the upward or downward stroke of the hook 28 ', on the slideway 26 which slides between two vertical guides 27 placed at a suitable distance from the previously mentioned wheels 33 and 37.
This slide has, on one of its sides, a projecting hook 28 ', which cooperates with the arms 41 and 42 of the double lock and has, on its other side, a certain number of similar crampons with a combined function. that of the cro-

radial chets from the edge of the drum 33. The hooks 28 of the slide 28 follow each other at the same intervals as the hooks 34 of the drum 33, and their number is equal to the number of hooks a quarter of the circumference of the drum, of so that when the last hook 28 of the slide is no longer in contact with the hooks of the drum, the latter has made a quarter turn (90) and that, consequently, the balance must be open or closed.
The slide 26 is fixed, by its lower end, to the control wire 23 ', which is equipped with a retardation counterweight 43 and is wound on a spiral drum 44 whose surface has a transition curvature with varied radii. , so that the difference between the traotion exerted by the counterweight and that exerted by the control wires is almost always constant.
This drum 44 can, by the aid of a series of toothed wheels 45, 46, 47, 48 and 49, start the clapper.
51 of a bell 52 with an exhaust 50.
Figs. 15 and 16 show the arrangement which automatically activates the locomotive's whistle, which must be fixed in a suitable place on the locomotive. It consists of an arm 53 which can rotate about an axis 54 and which, under the action of a spring lock, engages on the toothed wheel 56. A spring 57, fixed by one end at this arm and, at the other end, to the locomotive, ensures the constant support of the arm in the direction of travel of the latter.
When a train, rolling towards a level crossing, arrives at the determined distance from the latter, ie two to five kilometers, the said arm 53 hits a succession of rods 100 which are driven into the ground inside the template. , at appropriate distances. As the train moves forward, the arm 53 turns on the axis 54, until it is released by the rod 58, then it tends to straighten up or back to resume its original position under the traction of the spring 57 and with the help of the lock-spring 55, it drives the toothed wheel 56, together with the concentric toothed wheel 57
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
these wheels being both fixed to the axis 54. The wheel 57 then turns the wheel 58, which carries a disc 59 with a button 60,
to which is attached a chain, the other end of which is attached to the lever which controls the loootive's whistle. It is easy to see that, by the revolutions of the eccentric disc 59, the whistle operates automatically and intermittently, as if it were operated by hand.
As we have seen, the strand 22 of the wire which makes the strand 12 move, ends at the time regulator (see figs.
8,9,10 and 11) and passes around the drum 64-65, the surface of which offers a continuous curvature of transition with different radii; for the same reason as that relating to the drum 44, the retarding counterweight 66 is fixed at its end. The drum 64-65 is fixed to the axis 67, which takes support for rotation on the supports 68.
To the same axis, is fixed the drum 69; by its pulleys 70-70 and its control belt 71, it transmits a rotary movement to the last drum 72.0th, which is firmly fixed to the axis 76, can rotate freely, when actuated in the reverse direction of the clockwise, as is the case, for example, if it is the traction of the wire 22 which turns it; then, by the aid of the lock 73, it comes in pri - with the toothed wheel 74 which it rotates with the cylinder 75 which is firmly attached to it and is divided into degrees (see Figs. 8 and 12).
At the same time, the toothed wheel 77, which is firmly fixed to the axle 76, transmits a rotational movement from left to right to the toothed wheel 78 which is mounted in free play on this axle 76, thanks to the lock 79 The toothed wheel 78 transmits the movement to the consecutive series of toothed wheels 80 which are coupled to it.
When the cylindrical part (tube) 75 is thus rotated clockwise its upper circumference slides under another cylindrical part 81 similarly divided ot which, although prevented by the guides.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
of the 82 to turn, is, on the other hand, free to go up and down along a vertical rod 83; its diameter is a little smaller than the turn of the tube 81, so as to allow it to slide freely. It should be noted that in order to facilitate the replacement of the parts above the drum 72, they were mounted on a separate axle 76 '. It is understood that instead of two axles, they could not be fitted. bend only one, around which the drum 72 could rotate freely, in case the wheel 77 and the lock 79 were dispensed with.
The rotation of the lower tube 75 causes the upper tube 81 to rise slowly and gradually by the firm contact of the cam-cut surfaces of the two tubes and the highest position of this tube is reached when the lower tube 75 has makes a full 360 degree turn. At this moment, the upper tube 81, obeying the pressure of the spring 84, drops sharply to its original position from a height equal to the height of the incision. From the upper tube 81, an appendage 85 protrudes, which to it is attached (see fig. 12) and which, when the tube falls, strikes the small lever 19 of the closing arrangement of axis 3 (Figs. 6 and 7) and, by the action of the eccentric 15 lowers the locks 16, thus leaving free passage for the return of the bar 3 to its original position.
The time required for the complete ascent of the tube 81 and hence for the complete release of the bar 3 from the locks 16 can be regulated by a brake arrangement 85 attached to the last gear wheel 80 and by means of the- which the angular speed of the wheels and the gear 80 is regulated by a special key 87.
The system which has just been described operates as follows:
At a point of the locomotive (see figs s1,3,4. And 5), in relation to the position of the box 1 on the ground, is fixed a steel spring 88 with two branches, between which
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
the bar 3 passes them, and this spring, which is thrown forward by the thrust of the locomotive, with the intervention of the pulleys 10, comprises, in reality, a group of springs assembled at point 89 on the locomotive, of such that if the latter for some reason were to reverse, the entire set of springs would act and rotate on the hinge 89, thus preserving the control 3 from being damaged. When the clip 88 grips the control 3,
it transfers it from the position drawn in solid lines to that drawn in dotted lines, where the control is no longer in engagement with the springs, in the first place due to the elasticity effect due to the spring 9 and, in second, as a result of the downward thrust, by the converging guides 7-7.
In order to prevent this gripping from being defective due to some vertical or horizontal rocking of the locomotive, control 3 is retained on the one hand by the springs in a constantly vortical position, which means that it does not only to descend when the pressure exerted by the locomotive exceeds a certain limit and, on the other hand, when the distance between the two supports of the spring 88 and the length of the rollers 10 exceeds a little that exactly necessary.
When the control 3 is released from the action of the spring 88, it can no longer return to its original position, owing to the spring locks 16. In this position, it exerts its traction on the spring IL. Which, in turn, exerts its own on the actuating wire 12. The force of this traction is, by means of the specially calculated springs, 62 and 63 and of the wires, 22 and 23, transmitted to the regulator of time 24 and to the mechanism actuating the barriers and signals.
The wire 22 being now taut, exerts a traction on the edge of the drum 64,65, and sets in motion the drum 69, which is fixed to the axis 67. This drum 69, by means of its pulleys 70 and of the belt 71, transmits the rotational movement to the drum 72 of the time regulator 24 and, therefore, of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
makes the rods not reversible, prepares the movement of the release arrangement 81, 85 of the locks 16 and sets in motion the striking mechanism 80 which sets the time of this release.
In the meantime, under the traction exerted by the other wire 23, the slide 26, on the post of the barrier gate 25, having the position indicated in dotted lines, is pulled down and, by the wire 23 ' , activates the drum 44, which, by its set of toothed wheels, acts on the leaf 51 of the bell 52. The slide 26, when descending, acts on the rod.
86 ', which protrudes from it and hits the lock control 41, doubled 39, then in the position indicated in dotted lines, and pushes it to the position indicated in plain lines, where the mechanism of the barrier beam, 30, 31, is open and can be turned to the "closed" position.
The slide 26, continuing its descent, strikes, by its rods 28, on the other side, the rods 34 projected radially from the wheel 33 and causes the axis 29 to return, thus lowering the beam 30 by the non-reversing rod. - sible 35, which engages with the toothed wheel 36 fixed to the axis 29.This beam is locked in the closed position by the needle of the double lock 39, which has been moved to the position indicated by the solid lines At the same time, the signals 20, arranged on the top of the barrier and the remote stations under the control of wires (not shown in the drawings) in direct relation to the drum 33, are lowered, in order to show the driver of the locomotive that the track is clear, the barrier 31 being closed.
When the barrier is closed, a red triangle appears in the middle of the beam 30, in order to warn drivers of vehicles of an approaching train. This triangle is hung at its angles, at a lower location on the beam 30 and is provided with a counterweight to remain constantly in a vertical position (fig. 13).
This counterweight can be constituted by a lantern 93, made so that it can burn for a whole week, and at-
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
stained in the triangle by a vertical arm 94 fixed to the hinge 92. Therefore, this lantern fulfills the double function of counterweight and light signal.
Likewise, to each beam 30, a red glass disc is fixed in such a way that when the barrier is closed, that is to say when the beam 30 is in a horizontal position, the red disc is placed in front of. the lantern and thus shows a red light to the drivers of the vehicles. When the barrier is open, i.e. when the position of the beam is vertical, the triangle 91 always remains vertical thanks to its counterweight (or any additional weight desired), but it is not visible drivers of vehicles, hidden by the rails of the barrier.
A green disc vorro 95 is fixed to the beam, so as to take, when the barrier is open, a position one gaze from the lantern 93, which round visible to the drivers of vehicles a green light.
The time regulator 24 is arranged such that the release arrangement 81, with its rod 85, has its topmost position when the train arrives at the level crossing. Then, this arrangement 81, pushed by the pressure of its spring 84, returns forcefully back to its original position and its rod appendage 85 acts on the lever 19, and. releases the rod 3 from the engagement with the locks 16, which was discussed above.
Control 3, obeying the pressure of its springs
11, returns to its original position and the tension is no longer exerted on the wires 22 and 23. The counterweights 66 and 43 put the various parts back into action to return to their original positions. The slide 26 rises, its protruding rod 28 strikes the arm 42 of the double lock 39 and drives it back to the position indicated in dotted lines, where it takes the position formed under the action of the counterweight

<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
operating wires, return the beams automatically to the * open * position where they are guaranteed against any return of the needle of the double lock 39. When the beam 30 is raised to the open position, the wheel 33 rotates freely around axis 29. Then, the various maneuvering elements, with their respective signals, etc., resume their original position and are ready for a new entry into action,
During the accomplishment of all the aforementioned operations, the whistle of the locomotive does not cease functioning, being set in motion successively by the mechanism described with reference to figures 15 and 16, the arm 53 of which successively strikes the rods 100 (see fig. .2).
It is clearly demonstrated by the preceding description that the device which is the subject of the present invention is purely mechanical and has an automatic function; that it offers all possible safety and that in the event of a failure in the maneuver (which is almost impossible), all the signals mentioned on the barrier ports and the remote posts, warn the driver of the locomotive that the barrier is not closed, which allows him to reduce the speed of his convoy, so as to avoid a catastrophe.
The various maneuvering devices must be calculated in proportion to the distance required in each case, including the mechanism and the level crossing.
There is no need to dwell further on the above-mentioned measures and details relative to the construction of the various organs, for it is understood that any modification can be made without altering the basic idea. - tale of the present invention.
For example, the essential compositions of the devices or mechanisms could be doubled or multiplied in such a way that in the event of a failure of one of them, another would take over the service. more than a commando wire; it is the same
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
for locks and springs.
By making certain small modifications, the object of the present invention could also be applied to other purposes, for example, to warn the driver of the locomotive of the sudden destruction of a bridge.
In such cases, the rod 3 would be constantly kept attached, by wire, to this bridge, in the straight position indicated in dotted lines (see figs. 1 and 6). If the wire was cut, the rod would return to its original position and, on striking the train, it would warn the conductor by the set of an appropriate special device. In addition, the whistle actuating rods 100 could be placed at any dangerous point, or the whistle must be actuated, and in this way would avoid the consequences which may result from an oversight on the part of the driver.
The invention described above applies to level crossings located between two stations of an uninterrupted section of the track, over which trains pass without stopping.
Thanks to this device, the barriers of the level crossings are closed and reopened automatically by the train by means of a time regulator (timer).
The case of level crossings located near stations or on very busy streets will now be considered.
Near stations, trains in the process of maneuvering where freight trains reduce their speed to the time limit allowed by the time regulator, or below this limit. In addition, it is possible that, on busy lines, the time allowed by the regulator for longer and slower freight trains, or, by a public in a hurry, deemed too long for fast trains and other.
In the accompanying drawings, in order to make the comparison easy, the same reference figures have been adopted as before; it is shown how the barriers, after having been closed by the train by means of a spring box ( as already
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
described) are reopened by a second spring box, identical to the first.
This second box spring is attached to the ground limiting the track at the end of the section of the level crossing furthest from the arriving train. The distance between this box and the level crossing must not, in this case, be less than the length of the longest train, so that, after the train has passed the level crossing, the barriers can be reopened by the intervention of this second boot, which, by means of the wire 105 (fig. 13 and 18) pushes down the slide 100, which lowers the arm 41, and, in this way, opens the lock and allows the barriers to reopen freely by the effect of the counterweight 32,
which is executed in such a way that it is exactly sufficient to outweigh the weight of the barriers and the friction.
This second spring box must, in order to reopen the barriers, have a certain order (see fig. 17) in order to replace the time regulator and to ensure that the spring boxes are released after having performed their function.
For this reason, the wire, which was discussed in connection with the operation of the time regulator, is now employed in combination with a suitable spring 62 and a differential and tangent arrangement, an example of which is shown in fig. 17, by the drum 101, which, when rotated by the traction of the wire 22, exerts a twisting effect on the small drum 102, fixed on the same axis 124.
This torsion is then transmitted by the wire 22 and the pulley 103 to the release lever, which opens the locks of the spring boots and releases their springs, after fulfilling their function, that is to say - say the ringing of bells, closing and reopening of barriers and the operation of signals.
The moment at which the locks must be released can be set in that, while the springs actuating
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
the spring boxes are operated as above by the traction of the wire 22, the latter undergoes a gradual relaxation, until, until, it arrives at a point where all the displacement of the wire 22 produces moving the wire
22 ', which is sufficient to open the locks of the spring boxes.
Depending on the particular cases and the various distances, the diameters of the drums, the length of the spring 62, the length of the levers and the inclination of the tangent bolts may be variable, in relation to what is desired in each case. case.
If we now consider the possibility that two trains (an ascending train and a descending train) intersect on the section of the same level crossing, and if we assume that one of these two trains crosses the area outside section before the other and is therefore on the verge of reopening the gates, while the other train is still at the level crossing, the mechanism which will be described prevents the first train from causing the reopening of the gates. gates, before any other train has passed the entire section of the crossing.
If it is assumed that the ascending train is about to cross the limit of the section, before the descending train passes and the wire 105 (figs. 13 and 18) has been tensioned by the action of the rising train in order to pull the slide 108, the function of which, during its downstroke, is to lower the arm 42, so as to loosen the barriers and leave them liable to be reopened by the action of the counterweight 32, then this release of the barriers can take place without hindrance if the cam or the eccentric 115 (figs.
10 and 13) does not have the position shown in the drawings.
But, in the cases in question, if a descending train is still on the section of the level crossing, this train (which is slower) on entering the section, will cause the first spring boot to act on the descending track, and will produce a
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
tension on the iron wire 104 (fig. 18), thus pulling, to lower it, the slide 107 which, while lowering, will lower the arm 122 of the semi-circular eccentric 115 and force it to take the position shown in fig. 18. This position will prevent the slide lOB, which has been lowered by the action of the ascending train (which is the most advanced) from completing its downward stroke and releasing the lock 39 'or unlocking the barriers before the descending train has. left this section.
The descending train acts on the second or the last spring boot, on the side of the descending and pro track. tension is applied to the wire 102 (fig. 18), which in turn pulls and lowers the slide 113, which, by means of the arm 114, fixed on the eccentric 115,1 'brings force in the position leaving the path free for the slide 108, so that it can extend freely, until it meets the arm 41 and, in this way, unlock the lock 39 ', and, consequently, open the barriers 30 , after the last train has completely left the crossing.
An arrangement identical to that described above, for the ascending trains and shown in fig. 18, is also applicable to the descending trains.
As regards the slide 26, it should be remembered that, after completion of its downward stroke, an overturn causes it to return to its normal position.
Nevertheless, if, in its upward stroke, this slide passes, without touching it, beyond the wheel equipped with rods 33, while the barriers have not yet started to rise, it could happen (by some chance) that, suddenly, this slide reversed its movement and began to descend, as a result of a tension caused by a second train entering at the same instant in the section of the level crossing;
in this case, for this downward movement, it would be necessary for the slide, to meet the spindle wheel 33, then free to turn in this direction under the action

slide; if it were otherwise, there would be either fracture of the rods, or blockage of the slide in its downward stroke, which would prevent it from performing its function.
In order to allow the slide 26 to complete its downward run in such an eventuality, the axle 29 must be fitted with a spring coupling sleeve 125 clamping the wheel 36 against the sleeve 29 (see fig. 13), such that any soft might be released from the coupling sleeve by a rigid arm 126 attached to the body of the barrier-ports and acting on the coupling sleeve when the barriers are closed (i.e. when the barriers are closed). they are in a horizontal position) 'hence the possibility, for the wheel equipped with the rods, to rotate freely with the slide, without preventing the latter from completing its downward stroke to complete its function.
