Abstract

The safety barrier has a fixed part and a movable part. The safety barrier enables forming a temporary vehicle passage. The fixed part is formed from rails (2b,2c) parallel to the ground fitted to supports (1,3). The supports consist of a vertical post embedded in the ground and rail connecting pieces. The movable part is formed by a leaf constituted by movable rail segments (10,11) articulated about a vertical axis. The movable rail segments are directly connected to the fixed rail segments by vertical pivots (20,30) located behind the rail segments and separated from the support.

Description

Safety barriers placed along traffic lanes: roads, motorways, tracks, parking lots, factory yards etc. must be continuous so as not to present the slightest obstacle to vehicles sliding against them in the event of accidental contact.

But it must also be possible to cross them for service reasons: troubleshooting vehicles, supply of maintenance and repair equipment and materials, passage of vehicles, diversion of traffic, etc.

Sur certaines voies, ces circonstances peuvent se reproduire de nombreuses fois par an.It can also involve ensuring the circulation of exceptional convoys whose size does not not allow you to take the usual route. On certain routes, these circumstances may arise reproduce many times a year.

Based on the principle that we must ensure the continuity of vehicle protection by normal traffic, crossing barriers implies that the passage is temporary.

When these barriers are formed of beams subject to supports comprising vertical posts, it is possible to disassemble the beams and remove the vertical posts which, then, are specially designed to be removable.

Such disassembly is long and painful because it is impossible for a single man to operate a disassembled boom segment, due to its weight.

It is at least two men that must be mobilized to carry out such a dismantling and ensure free passage across the barrier.

It is easy to understand that this method cannot be used to quickly release short but frequent passages, only to let a vehicle, a contraption or others.

This is why we have already thought of simplifying this operation by making certain segments of smooth not removable but mobile, which allows to quickly spare passages and close them just as quickly.

However, the existing solutions are not entirely satisfactory.

Lifting barriers, such as those that protect level crossings, are less resistant than safety barriers made of concrete walls or beams metallic, so that in the event of an accident, even a light vehicle can pass through it lifting barrier and leave the roadway, while the safety barriers are precisely installed to oppose such a crossing which can be extremely serious.

We then thought of providing sliding segments, designed like beams.

When the safety barrier is a concrete wall, the temporary passage is pre-existing, since it is a breach, and the closure of this passage cannot be a block of concrete which could ideally block the passage by restoring the continuity of the wall.

The heterogeneous nature of such an installation leaves unsolved problems of continuity and, therefore, security.

Thus, to provide temporary passages in concrete safety barriers, we cleaning a breach, of course, but we close it with metal rails subject to vertical posts fixed to the ground and when we want to use the passage, we disassemble the beams and remove the vertical posts which are designed to be removable.

The end of the metal rails is thicker in front of the walls and forms a dangerous obstacle that we are trying to minimize by making this end smooth a curved shape by bending towards the wall.

For these reasons of discontinuity, the sliding segments are generally confined safety barriers formed entirely of metal rails because, then, the Sliding segments are themselves heald segments.

But we are faced with the problem of weight because once unlocked the segments sliding, they must be moved against significant friction, respecting a correct alignment, then put them back in their very exactly defined position due to the fasteners used, while these segments have a length of at least 3.50 meters and a weight of about 40 kilos, so that here again it is difficult and painful quickly open and close a temporary passage through a security barrier without call on several men.

We then thought of solving the problem by making quick and easy the maneuvers of moving segments in safety barriers by eliminating the disadvantages due to weight, without reducing the safety of the barrier, i.e. by strictly respecting the continuity of the safety barrier, whatever its structure.

Such a barrier is described in document DE-A-2.602.014 which relates to a barrier security can be crossed by a temporary opening made by pivoting at least one barrier segment of the barrier.

This safety barrier has two important characteristics:
  • the pivoting boom segments can only travel at an angle of 90 ° (page 6, line 36 to page 7, line 2 and the drawing in figures 2 and 4),
  • the pivoting heald segments are hinged to posts (page 5, line 31 to page 6, line 8, and drawing in figures 2 and 4).

These characteristics are prohibitive in practice, which explains why the barrier described in the previous document has never been approved and, therefore, never carried out.

In fact, for the boom to meet standards, the downstream end, relative to the direction, must vehicle traffic on the track, each boom segment covers the end upstream of the neighboring downstream boom segment, which is described in the document above on page 7, lines 9 to 18.

It is therefore necessary that the pivot according to which the heald segment is articulated is located not at a end of the pivoting segment but at a distance from this end at least equal to the overlap length.

This geometry is such that in the barrier open position, the downstream end of the swivel segment protrudes on the taxiway, which is unacceptable for reasons obvious security.

None of the known solutions (in particular that of the document above) has reached a satisfactory solution because the skilled person is faced with a dilemma:
  • or else the end of the pivoting segment projects beyond the taxiway (FIG. 2 of the document above),
  • or else a heavy structure must be designed due to a very large overhang of the pivot supports, made necessary to lengthen the pivoting arm (FIG. 4 of the cited document).

However, it appears that the fixed post which supports this structure acquires at the same time an unacceptable mass, rigidity and solidity because if a vehicle collides with such a post, it will not yield, while the calibrated bending of all poles is a conditio sine qua non safety standards.

To make a post more solid than the others is to create an extremely hard point dangerous.

More specifically, the standards require that in the event of the barrier being struck by a vehicle, the beams must remain at approximately the same height so that they fit in the vehicle body in order to create a guide, the arm constituting a kind of flexible strap (but not elastic).

This can only be obtained if the beam separates from the posts, which is obtained by means of connecting pieces of the beams to the posts. These so-called "spacers" are fixed on the one hand with the beams and on the other hand with the posts, this last fixing being carried out with by means of bolts forming fuses, so that they yield to a given force.

Therefore, all posts must be standard so as not to create any hard spots on the along the barrier, the movable part of it should not create any difference functional in the event of an impact.

Gold; it is exactly this serious defect which is described in the document above, since of on page 7, line 10 on page 8, line 21, is the explanation of the special structure of posts and joints, where it is abundantly shown that these posts are different other posts and, therefore, are not standard.

However, there is apparent evidence for the skilled person to articulate the segment pivoting on a pole and until now no one has proposed another solution, if although safety barrier openings by pivoting segments have never been accepted. It is a solution deemed abandoned.

The present invention proposes a solution very different from those known, which reconciles the functional necessities of the barrier with the facilities provided by an opening formed by pivoting at least one heald segment articulated along a vertical axis.

  • l'un au moins des pivots est écarté du support le plus proche selon un distance suffisante pour que le bord vertical d'un segment mobile situé le plus près du pivot correspondant soit situé au-delà de la face des lisses tournée vers la voie de circulation des véhicules, quand le segment mobile est en position d'ouverture;
  • la distance qui sépare les pivots du support le plus proche est suffisante pour permettre aux segments mobiles de se placer derrière le segment fixe voisin, après un pivotement angulaire supérieur à 90°, et d'environ 180°, sensiblement contre la face. de ce segment fixe qui est opposée à la voie de circulation des véhicules, en position d'ouverture desdits segments mobiles;

To illustrate the invention, the example of a safety barrier of the type has been chosen. composed of supports fixed to the ground and a continuous rail formed by profile segments metal placed end to end with partial overlap.

However, as emerges from the description which follows, the invention is also applicable to safety barriers of another type: concrete wall, wooden rails, etc. and of course with the metal beams which are associated over short distances with low walls concrete.

In FIG. 1, it can be seen that a barrier according to the invention here comprises supports each comprising on the one hand a vertical post 1 firmly fixed to the ground, for example by fitting it into a block of buried concrete, and on the other hand a spacer 3 by which heald segments 2 a , 2 b , 2 c , ... are secured, a spacer known in practice under the name of "spacer".

These components are well known per se, as well as the structure they form, so that they will not be described in more detail.

A fixed barrier of indefinite length is thus constituted and provision is made, from place to place, through passages formed by movable parts of the continuous beam.

In accordance with the invention, two heald segments 10 and 11 are pivotally mounted along vertical axes of articulations designated in FIGS. 1 to 3 by the global references 20 and 30, near the ends of the fixed segments 2 b and 2 c .

With this arrangement, the movable segments 10 and 11 constitute leaves which can open like a double leaf door, as shown by the visible arrows F1 and F2 in figure 2.

In the closed position, shown in Figures 1 and 2, the leaves 10 and 11 are held in place, according to the same arrangement as the fixed segments 2 a , 2 b , 2 c , 2 d , etc.

Of course, in this closed position, the leaves 10 and 11 must play the same restraint role that the fixed heald segments in the event of a vehicle impact, so that they must have the same fixing effect on the ground. (We will not describe here nor the precise means by which a degressive bending effect of the supports is obtained, nor the means of rupture calibrated, all well known to those skilled in the art).

For this, vertical posts 12 and 13 of the “erasable” type are provided, that is to say likely to be moved or removed so as no longer to constitute an obstacle to the passage of vehicles when the leaves 10 and 11 are in the open position.

One solution is to place sheaths (not visible in the drawing) in the ground, the top is flush and into which the posts 12 and 13 penetrate. In the active position the posts 12 and 13 are kept vertical by the sleeves while in position erasure they are removed.

Another solution is to articulate the vertical posts 12 and 13 by their base, at the ground level, so that they can occupy either an active position in which they are erected vertically, i.e. an erasing position in which they are lowered to the ground level, possibly in notches (not shown).

These two solutions are given as an example among certainly many others possible.

So that the leaves 10 and 11 are securely attached to the vertical supports 12 and 13, there are associated with them fasteners of any known type (not shown) and which, therefore, will not be described in detail.

These can be, for example, pins, bolts, keys and the like, cooperating with counterparts of leaves 10 and 11 on the one hand and vertical posts 12 and 13 on the other go.

It should be noted, however, that a particular fastening system should only concern the connection between the heald segments and the spacer, which is not critical with regard to the barrier shock absorption function.

On the contrary, the connection between the spacer 3 and the post 1 must remain standard in order to keep unchanged characteristics with regard to disconnection at the support considered automatic spreader 3 and post 1 on the one hand, and against the calibrated bending of the post 1 which must be strictly similar to that of all the other posts 1 of the fence.

It goes without saying that the number of supports is chosen according to the width of the passage temporary considered, i.e. depending on the length of the leaves, and is not in no way limited to the two supports 12 and 13 described and shown here diagrammatically.

To facilitate the operation of the leaves 10 and 11, handles 14 and 15 are provided near the free edges of leaves 10 and 11 on their face opposite to the traffic lane.

When the temporary passage to the house is relatively narrow, one can be satisfied with a single leaf, either 10 or 11 depending on the direction of movement of vehicles, meaning that symbolized in the drawings by the arrow F.

The structure which we have just described has the advantage of completely eliminating the disadvantages due to the weight, since this weight is fully compensated by the fixing leaves with fixed segments, as described below.

The opening maneuvers are carried out by a single man who can easily release the fastening members of the leaves 10 and 11 to the vertical posts 12 and 13 then remove or lower these posts 12 and 13, then rotate the leaves 10 and 11 using the handles 14 and 15.

The closing operations are carried out exactly the opposite of the opening operations and do not require no more effort.

When the temporary passage to be cleared is very wide, the leaves must themselves be very wide and the overhang becomes too large for the efforts of bending due to the weight are fully absorbed by the joints.

This case is shown in Figure 3 where we see leaves 16 and 17 very long and therefore very heavy.

In order to eliminate here again the disadvantages of the weight and to allow a single man to perform the opening and closing maneuvers, the leaves 16 and 17 rest on rollers 18 and 19 of any known type, which have been shown here very schematically as having their axis plumb with the leaf which they support but which could also be mounted on a swiveling axis in screeds offset backwards, that is to say located mainly or entirely on the side of the side of the leaves opposite the track circulation, this to prevent the rollers from protruding in front of said leaves.

If necessary, depending on the condition of the ground behind the leaves 16 and 17 when they are closed, tracks A and B can be arranged in a centered arc on the vertical axis of joints 20 and 30.

Such a raceway is useful on uneven, grassy or sloping ground but is superfluous on a level and horizontal concrete floor for example.

It is possible that the material provisions of the site hamper the folding of the leaves against the rear face of fixed heald segments, in particular because there is an obstacle on the path of a leaf or even of the two leaves, which is the case when the beams are find at a distance from an obstacle (another smooth for example) lower than the length of a leaf.

In this case, each leaf can be made up of at least two elements, or segments, articulated together like blinds or accordion shutters.

One of these so-called “basic” elements is articulated to a fixed heald segment, like the leaf 10 or like leaf 11, and the one or the first of the others is articulated to the base element or the previous element.

This structure is easily understood without having to be represented at the drawing.

According to an important characteristic of the invention, the continuity of the healds is ensured when the leaves 10 and 11 (or 16 and 17) are in the closed position.

Generally, the different heald segments are fixed to each other and to the supports vertical in such a way that, with reference to the normal direction of movement of the vehicles, the downstream end of each segment covers the upstream part of the next downstream segment.

This assembly known as “in fish scales”, removes any dangerous obstacle likely to hinder the sliding of vehicles along the rails in the event of an accident.

If the different segments were exactly aligned, and even if their ends were adjusted to the same vertical support, it could be that a segment is pressed and not the next one, by a vehicle in difficulty, at the risk of transforming the segment that has remained in place as a real offensive stick extremely dangerous for this vehicle and its passengers.

In order to reconstruct the same mechanical characteristics as those of a continuous fixed heald on a temporary passage, the vertical axes of the articulations 20 and 30 are offset relative to the adjacent vertical edges, on the one hand of the fixed segments 2 b and 2 c and, on the other hand, leaves 10 and 11 (or 16 and 17), in order to create extensions which must cover part of the neighboring segment (fixed or mobile) when the leaves are closed.

In other words, leaves 10 and 11 are placed and fish scales, exactly as if they were fixed boom segments, taking into account the direction of traffic normal vehicle indicated by arrow F.

In FIGS. 2, 3 and 5, it can be seen that the articulation 30 is situated below the downstream vertical edge 2 e of the fixed heald segment 2 c situated immediately upstream of the temporary passage, which leaves an extension 2 f of length L1 which overlaps the upstream vertical edge 11a of the leaf 11 located downstream of the segment 2 c (17 and 17a for the embodiment of Figure 3), and which extends over a length of this flap 11 is substantially equal to L1, when the latter is in the closed position.

Figures 2, 3 and 6, it is seen that the hinge 20 is located below the downstream vertical edge 10a of the leaf 10 located downstream of the temporary passage, thereby leaving an extension 10b of length L2 which covers the upstream part of the downstream fixed heald segment 2 b , in particular its upstream vertical edge 2 q , segment 2 b itself located downstream of the leaf 10 (16 for the embodiment of FIG. 3). The extension 10b extends over a length of this segment 2b substantially equal to L2, when the leaf 10 is in the closed position.

The lengths of the leaves 10 and 11 are uneven, in the sense that the upstream leaf 11 also has a downstream end extension 11 b which covers the upstream vertical edge 10 c of the downstream leaf 10 and which extends over this leaf 10 when the two leaves are in the closed position.

In the open position, the leaves 10 and 11 are moved at an angle of more than 90 ° so that they are completely erased behind the fixed part of the arm.

It can be seen, in fact, that the pivoting of the leaf 10 must be able to traverse a minimum angle allowing the end 10 a of its extension 10 b to disappear inside the contour of the safety barrier so that this end 10 a is at most aligned with the plane in which the face of the barrier facing the vehicle traffic lane is located.

Cela impose que l'angle de pivotement soit supérieur à 90° et même proche de 180°.This requires that the pivot angle is greater than 90 ° and even close to 180 °.

It is observed that in the fully open position of the leaf 10, it is applied against the rear face of the fixed segment 2b , so that its extension is well located behind the barrier but extends in the temporary passage, in across from it.

The width of this passage is therefore equal to the distance between the opposite ends of the segments 2b and 2c , minus the length of the extension 10b .

This is of no importance since this provision is taken into account when determining the desired free width for the temporary passage.

The movement of the leaves 10 and 11 must be greater than 90 °, at least as far as the downstream leaf 10 is concerned, but preferably, the leaves 10 and 11 can be folded back 180 ° against the face of the fixed heald segments 2 b and 2 c opposite the normal vehicle traffic lane, in the position shown in dotted lines in FIG. 2.

This position is better than any other for two reasons:
  • the temporary passage between the fixed heald segments 2 b and 2 c is entirely clear, which allows long vehicles to use it without having to maneuver,
  • the leaves 10 and 11 can be subjected to the fixed segments by removable members, in order to immobilize them and thus guarantee that they cannot be closed accidentally, in particular under the effect of a strong wind or vibrations.

In Figures 4 to 8, we see that the joints 20 and 30 are identical and we will now describe the exemplary embodiment of FIGS. 4 to 8 while referring indifferently at joint 20 or at joint 30, bearing in mind that the same references designate the same elements, but in the order of 200 for joint 20 and in the order of 300 for the joint 30.

We first note that the joint is fixed directly to the corresponding beam (segment fixed 2 or leaf 10-11 or 16-17) and not to a vertical post 1. As a result, the posts 1 are absolutely standard, of equal resistance all along the security barrier, so that a vehicle accidentally striking this barrier meets the same resistance calibrated, whether it is far from the hinged leaves, near the hinged leaves or on the articulated leaves.

The 20-30 joint consists of:
  • two plates 201 and 202 (301 and 302) fixed on the rear face respectively of the fixed heald segment 2b and of the leaf 10,
  • two bases 203 and 204 fixed to the plates 201 and 202 perpendicular to the plane of these and braced by gussets 205 and 206 fixed both to the plates 201-202 and to the bases 203-204,
  • two hinge leaves 207 and 209 fixed to the base 203 and two hinge leaves 208 and 210 fixed to the base 204, constituting two by two of the yokes,
  • a vertical pivot 211 constituted by a bolt which passes through aligned holes of the leaves 207-209 and 208-210 and which receives a locking nut 212 and a nut 213 for locking the nut 212.

To clear the temporary passage, first unlock the leaves 10 and 11 subject to the vertical posts 12 and 13, then remove these posts 12 and 13, then by means of the handle 14 we first pull on the door 10 whose the free end is behind the extension 11b , and this leaf 10 is moved in an arc this circle along the axis of the vertical pivot 211, owing to the fact that the hinge leaves 208 and 210 are integral with the leaf 10 by the parts 204 and 202 and that they can rotate freely around the pivot 211.

The length of the leaves 208-210 and 207-208 is such that the pivot 211 is moved away from the fixed heald segment 2b and from the leaf 10 to allow the latter to pivot at an angle of 180 °, until it is practically applied against the rear face of the fixed heald segment 2 b .

The same operation is repeated for the leaf 11, which completely clears the passage between the end 10 a of the movable segment 10 and the end 2 e of the segment and 2 c .

One or more stops can be provided on the rear face of the fixed heald segments and immobilization means to prevent any accidental movement of the leaves 10 and 11 open.

To reconstitute the continuous beam and condemn the temporary passage, the reverse maneuvers are carried out, starting with the leaf 11, so that the end of the leaf 10 is found behind the extension 11 b .

So that the entire structure described above has qualities of solidity and mechanical resistance equal to that of a structure composed of fixed parts only, it must spare him mechanical stress from the very existence of one or several moving parts and stresses due to the maneuvers of this or these parts mobile.

For this, it may be useful for the fixed parts which support the mobile parts to be reinforced, as soon as the posts 1 remain standard and the spacers 3 are fixed also standard way to these posts 1.

But, to ensure as good a continuity of the security barrier as possible all of its elements must meet the same technical characteristics as impact resistance, slip, bending, "strap" effect, coefficient of rupture, and other technical specifications meeting standards.

It is therefore necessary, as far as possible, to use, in addition to the posts 1, the maximum standard elements: beams, spacers, connecting pieces.

To reconcile these two apparently contradictory needs for strengthening and maintaining standardization, strengthening the rigidity of the smooth connection - spacer - support vertical, without changing the characteristics of each of these elements.

Referring to Figure 9, we see that we interpose stiffeners 4 between the spacers 3 and the corresponding heald segments 2, on the fixed part of the barrier to which a mobile part is articulated.

Each stiffener comprises a part 4 a secured to the spacer 3 and two wings 4 b and 4 c secured to the heald segment 2.

Thus, the weight of the articulated movable part, when it is no longer in the closed position, does not tend to excessively twist the fixed heald segment 2 which supports it and does not of consequence on the mechanical characteristics of this segment 2.

Another reinforcement solution is to provide a greater number of supports vertical 1-3 because the assembly is more rigid and more resistant, even if each support 1-3 is the same type as the others.
