Warning signal, particularly for crossings at level of railroads . The object of the present additional patent is further improved on the warning signal according to the claim of the main patent.
The accompanying drawing shows one embodiment of the warning signal, given to by way of example.
Fig. 1 is an elevation of a sign placed at the intersection of a road and a railway line. Fig. 2 shows the front view of the signal mechanism taken out of its box C and shown partially in section. Fig. 3 is a side view of the mechanism of fig. 2. FIG. 4 is a schematic view of the signal control devices. Figs. 5 and 6 are details of fig. 2 showing the de elements of the balance wheel in different positions.
Considering fig. 1, the S sign placed at the intersection of a railway line T and a road H, includes a mast 9 at the top of which is mounted a 0 box containing the mechanism which is used to operate a pendulum or semaphore D. This semaphore can oscillate in a pendular plait, thus giving the danger sign which warns passers-by of an approaching train or locomotive.
It comprises a rod 10 and a balance Il provided with a disc 12, preferably colored red and bearing on both sides an inscription, for example the word , Elalte " or Stop 1 '.
The semaphore D pivots around an axis 101, carried by a horizontal tube 14 fixed to the box C and supported by a counter-plug 15. </ B> It can be subjected to a back and forth movement by a mechanism acting through a connecting rod 16 moving to < / B> inside dut tube 14.
A double screen 17 bearing on each side the two words Re keep ",, Listen", is fixed on the counter sheet 15. A retaining device, contained in the box C, can maintain the semaphore D in the inclined position shown in fig. 1, position in which disk 12 is hidden by screen 17.
In order to be able to give the indication of danger at night, the semaphore disc 12 carries an electric lamp 13; as we will see later, this lamp does not 'illuminates only when the semaphore leaves the tilted position.
The operating mechanism of the semaphore D shown in section in fig. 2 and 8, comprises a frame F, fixed to the interior of the box C and comprising a front part f </ B> and a rear part f, assembled by bolts as shown in fig. 3. The rear part f carries a console 18 on which are mounted two electromagnets ni and or'.
These appliances are arranged on either side of a horizontal axis 19, carried by the frame F. Parts 20 and 20a form the poles of the appliances, while, mounted freely following 'axis 19 and on either side of this axis, are two reinforcements 21 and 211, at pulled respectively by the electros m and ni', as it will be indicated.
These attractions transmit a movement of oscillation to axis 19 through arms 22 and 22a fixed to axis 19. By means of suitable contacts described below, the electrodes 211 and iie 'are alternately excited, and attract the armatures 21 and 211, which, came into engagement with the arms 22 and 22a,
transmits an oscillating movement to axis 19. This movement drives the crank 23 fixed on axis 19 < / B> between the f and f parts of the F frame and this crank gives a back and forth movement to the semaphore < B> D by means of the rod 16. A counterweight 24 is fixed to the axis 19 between the parts of the frame F for the purpose of making the level 23 oscillate, as described below.
When the semaphore is in the vertical position, each armature 21, 21 "is spaced at an angle of approximately 50 from the corresponding poles of the appliances and rests on the arm 22 or 22a. the semaphore deviates from the vertical position to the right, Far- mature 21 comes into contact with pole 20 as soon as the deviation angle is approximately 5 "</ B > and beyond this stroke, arm 22 moves away from its frame, while arm 22a lifts frame 21,1. The movement is identical for the 2la armature when the balance is moved from the vertical position to the left.
We will now describe the circuits ,, of excitation of the electros in and ni 'which make oscillate the semaphore D. Referring to fig. 2, 3, 4, the switch is shown in K and comprises a base 2.5 fixed to the frame F and on which is mounted a contact to spring 26 and two other contacts to spring 27 and 27 # '1. The contact rod 26 is interposed between the contacts 27 and 2VI,
and it tends to to press normally on the contact 27. rii arm 29 pivots around a 28 axis carried does it follow frame 1? and presents at its upper part an insulating block 30 provided with a notch 31 to receive the lower part of the contact 26 . At its lower part, the arm 29 is bifurcated so to carry an axis 29il which can turn freely two rollers 39 - </ B > and ÔDI. A one end of the shaft 19 is attached a cam 33 whose pro thread has four curved surfaces, a b V and a ', and an edge c, each of these parts by successively gearing the roller 32 < / B> when the cam. sorrel.
Curved surfaces a bc have different radii but the same center, that of the axis, 19, and the </ B > radius of a 'is the same as that of a. rite pivoting cam 34, the profile of which has the same radius as the ridge c, is supported by the two springs 3.5 and 35a supported by the cam 033 and its upward movement is limited by a stop 36 also supported by the cam 33. The cam 34 acts on the roller 32a.
The D semaphore can be held in an inclined position by the retention device L (fig. 2, 3, 5 and 6). It includes a J12 electro fixed to the frame F between the parts f and f 'below the crank 23. </ B > The electro 3t 'attracts an armature 42 mounted on the arm 43, one end of which is bifurcated and mounted on the axis 44.
This frame is pushed towards the poles of the electro X- 'by a counterweight 45-1 oscillating on the axis 44 and carrying an angled lever 4,5 which presses to its upper part on a projection 43b of the arm 43. The frame 421 is however not in contact with the poles of the electro but in a slightly spaced position. This holds -à what the oscillating motion of lever 45 is. limited by a stop screw 45b carried by the lever and passing to through an orerture 4311, provided in the arm 43.
Screw 45b is adjusted so to maintain this free space between the frame and the solenoid of the electro. The usefulness of this provision will become apparent plus Join.
On the middle of the frame pivot around an axis 460- two connecting rods 46 joined to their upper part by an axis 70. Two other levers 71 and 7la are mounted on the same axis and are joined to their other end by an axis 48 fixed to the frame F. A pawl 47 also pivots around the axis 70 and embraces at its other end, terminated in a fork, the axis 48.
The upper branch of the forked end of the pawl 47 is thinned for faith-mer a tooth 49 which, when the pawl 47 occupies the position shown in FIG. 2, engages in a bar 50, with "saw teeth, carried by my level 23. The pawl 47 is lifted by the mature arm 42, when this one is attracted by the electro JU2, by means of a leaf spring mounted by means of a hook 52 on the frame 42, to which it is articulated by the axis 46 ".
A caliper 63 and a pin 54 retain the spring 51 between the connecting rods 46; this spring bears in its upper part on a stop 55 of pawl 47. A screw 56 mounted on the frame 42 is adjusted so < B> to press the spring 51 when the armature is attracted and to not to act on it when the mature arm is removed.
The retainer operates as follows : When the MI electro is energized, the armature 42 is pressed against the pole pieces so that the screw 56 presses against the spring blade 51. The upper part of the blade presses against the stop 55 of the pawl 47, so that the pawl is projected upwards in a position such that its tooth 49 engages with one of the saw teeth of the bar 50, thus maintaining the semaphore in its extreme left position, preventing it to fall back by its own weight.
Figs. 2, 3 and 5 show the device in this position. If now the electro M2 is de-energized, the armature 42 is released and tilts, thus allowing the connecting rods 46 to oscillate under the influence of the force exerted on the pawl 47 by the bar. 50. </ B > Ratchet 47 sorrel around tooth 49 as the center, until this tooth snaps out of engagement with bar 50, but the forked end of the ratchet remains in engagement with the axis 48 thanks to the connecting rods 71 and 7P.
The semaphore is then free to show itself under the influence of gravity and of the ni and W electrodes. As soon as it is thus released, the counterweight 45a brings the frame 42 closer to its position of attraction, so that the click 47 will return to its position of engagement.
In this approximation, the screw '06 exerts no pressure on the spring 51, however the pawl rests on the axis 48 by the upper arm of its forked end ; in this position, tooth 49 will be just out of engagement with the teeth of bar 50. But we see that if the electro IMI is re-energized, the attraction position of </ B> the armature 42 will have the effect that the screw 56 will exert pressure on the spring 51 and the upper end of this res out will then make the pawl 47 oscillate towards the top,
so that its tooth 49 will engage with one of the teeth of bar-50 when the semaphore returns to its extreme left position and the latter remains maintained in this position.
It is thus demonstrated that when the electro 311 is de-energized, the armature 42 is maintained at approximately in its position of attraction and the pawl is at roughly in its engaged position, so that only one le- manages momentum on the armature to cause engagement or release. This construction makes it possible to have an electro of small dimensions and to employ a weak excitation current.
The operation of the signal 8 is described in connection with the control means used _à the support of the schematic device shown in fig. 4. T is a section of railway track whose rails are insulated by 57. joints. It is clear that there may y have several sections of track making it possible to control signal 8 via relays. Then, the section considered is established a track circuit with a battery of Y cells connected to through the rails of the track to one end of the section and a re lais B connecting said rails to the other end of this section.
Relay R is provided with two contacts 58 and 59. The lower contact , 58 closes the lamp circuit 13 </ B> coming from a battery B by a contact 58a, while the upper contact 59 closes the circuit of the electro M 'from the battery by a contact 59a. On </ B> thus sees that when the relay is energized, the contact 58 breaks the circuit of the lamp while the contact 59 establishes that of l 'electro, JU. When the relay is deexcited,
the reverse operation of the contacts contributes to closing the lamp circuit and to breaking the circuit of the electro JIV.
'A battery B supplies current to Alectros iii and m' to the electro in 'by wires 60, 40, 39, the windings of the electro m ', wire 38, contact 27a, contact 26, common return wire 37.
A the electro m the current is supplied by the wires 60, 40, 39, the windings of the electro ni, wire 41, contacts 27 , 26 and common return wire 37. It is to notice that the circuits of the m and m 'electros, although supplied by the same source of energy as lamp 13 and electro 312, do not pass through relay R or its contacts 58 and 59.
The operation of the signal is as follows : The normal position of the devices being that of fig. 4, it will be assumed that a locomotive or a train engages in the section of the track. Relay R is immediately de-energized, retainer L is triggered and lamp 13 lights up.
The semaphore D e0mrnelice to oscillate and this trolling movement The oscillation of the cam 33, whose part b is placed opposite the roller Ô2; while the contact to spring 26 is applied to the contact 27, the arm 29 sorrel in opposite direction, so that the 26-27 contact closes.
The electro-in is excited, its armature has been pulled and causes a rotation of the handle 23, which, the action of gravity helping, gives the balance an impulse to the right. The movement continuing, the cam 34 is driven by the cam 33 and abuts against the roller 32n unlike to the action of the springs 35 and 35a.
When the whole surface ba rolled on the roller 39., this one then rolls out on the sui-face in clinked b ', until the roller 32a reaches the upper corner 34a of the cam 34. - A this moment the action of the springs Ô5, 35-1 is greater than faith-what acts on the arm 29, so that the roller 32, suddenly jumps around the corner 34, ',
and comes to rest on the surface 34b of the cam 34. This sudden movement of the roller 32a oscillates the arm 29 and presses the contact 26 on contact 2TI. A at this point the semaphore D is 5 " beyond the vertical position so that Faimature 21 just reaches pole piece 20. L 'electro m is then de-energized and electro ni' is energized, but this does not slow down the movement of the balance because Parmature 2P then gives me an angle of 100 with the pole piece and is thus out influence of this pole.
The impedance of the coils prevents the magnetic field from reaching too large a value during the brief interval during which the electro is excited.
As soon as the cam 34 has acted on the roller 3211, it is returned to its initial position under the action of the springs 35, 35-, but this does not affect the position of the arm 29, because there is no change when the roller 321 leaves the cam 34 and the roller 3.) rolls on the head c, whose radius is the same as that of surface 34b.
The movement of the semaphore continuing, the roller rolls on a; whereupon the arm 29 oscillates sufficiently to return the contact 26 to its middle position, thus de-energizing the electro în '. Immediately after this last rolling of ga let 32, the semaphore reaches its extreme position to right and begins to swing in the opposite direction by the action of its weight, thus dragging the cam 33 in the opposite direction.
- After a slight displacement .. the -galet 32 rolls on the edge c of the cam, which makes the arm oscillate 29 </ B > and closes contact 26--27-1. The electro ni 'is excited and the attraction of its armature gives impetus to the semaphore. When the edge c releases the roller 32, the cam 34 with the roller 32-1 keeps the contact 9-6-27-1 closed and the electro in 're, # te energized until the semaphore has reached 51) beyond the middle position.
Then the train 34 abruptly abandons the roller 321, and thus allows the roller 32 to fall on the surface b. The electro 2n is then excited for a very short time then is deexited when the roller 32 reaches the surface a of the cam, whereupon the contact 26 has returned to its middle position.
It is thus seen, from the above, that in each oscillation of the semaphore, the electro which gives the impulse is de-energized when the semaphore is spaced 50 beyond the vertical. This in order to use the minimum possible energy, benefiting from the principle of the pendulum in order to obtain a relatively large amplitude of oscillation by the cumulative effect of pulses obtained by the inertia of the semaphore. It can also be seen that the reversal of the contact 26 is always accomplished by a sudden action of the roller 32a on the cam 34.
The aim of this movement is to avoid the possibility of inertia of the semaphore which could arise when the oscillation amplitude is very small and if the reversal of the contact is made slowly, because then the appliances may not be excited at the desired time.
It is easily understood from this that the restraint device not acting, the selector D takes (in a continual back and forth movement as long as a train is in the section of track and that this movement can serve as a warning to persons approaching the to level crossing. When the train has cleared the section of track, relay R is re-energized and its contacts extinguish the lamp and cock the restraint.
When the semaphore, oscillating, finally reaches its extreme position, between screens 17, tooth 49 engages with part -23; and the s.é - * # maphore is kept in its erased position, d thus giving the indication free passage ", - ' It is easy to see that in the event that battery B is to fail, the semaphore will fall into the vertical position, thus indicating a - fault. the device. In the event that the retainer does not function, the semaphore will oscillate continuously, giving the indication , Stop ".
The track circuit is naturally installed on the side of the passage, in the direction of the movement of the train, so as to put the signal in motion before the train reached the to level crossing.
Although only one form of signal execution has been described which applies to the invention, it is understood that at ten devices indicated, any modification of < B> de- tail, without in any way changing the very principle of the invention.
