" Chambre d'appareil photographique".
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
point et l'exposition, un temps assez long ;

La figure 1 montre l'appareil va. de derrière; la figure 2 est une coupe pratiquée suivant la ligne Il-Il dans la figure 1; la figure 3 est une variante du dispositif à saccades pour le mouvement vertical de la plaque; la figure 4 montre une disposition pour le mouvement de mise au point des lentilles, vue d'en haut; la figure 5 montre une tonne spéciale de réalisation du dispositif masque réglable ; la figure 6 est la représentation d'un dispositif de réglage et de fixation de la vitesse de l'obturateur; la figure 7 représente une variante de réalisation du dispositif limitateur du mouvement horizontal de la plaque; la figure 8 est une forme modifiée de la réalisation de celle-ci; la figure 9 montre une autre forme de réalisation du. dispositif masque réglable;

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
EMI7.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

"Camera chamber".
We rang the cameras allowing several photographs to be taken on a single plate, one after the other, along or below each other. In cameras of this kind, the plate on which the photos are taken moves jerkily in front of a photographic chain limited to the dimensions that one wishes given to the photo, while a cinematographic shutter or shutter of the same kind closes the orifice through which light penetrates during the movement of the plate and exposes the part of the plate which is in front of the photograp] field at the moment when the plate stops.
When we have to put at the p @ with known devices, we put a frosted glass at the pl @ previously occupied by the frame (dark shutter) after its removal. As a result, it flows between the mis @

point and exposure, quite a long time;
furthermore, there is a great inconvenience and a waste of time, as it is impossible to focus on the frosted glass, unless the dark shutter is removed, especially since it is always necessary to introduce the shutter into the chassis before removing it. In practice this means that the focusing on the frosted glass can only be done before the first shot and not during the next shot and that the sharpness and determination of the image as well as its focus. in page cannot be controlled while shooting, so the first focus cannot be changed.
As a result, the object to be photographed should only make very slight movements, which do not require a change in the focus, and that the objective of multiple shots, which consists of taking in the minimum time as many photos as possible with as many different image positions as possible can not be achieved. This disadvantage is especially manifested in the case of moving objects, those whose photography requires short exposure times, when natural images must be photographed quickly, for children for example.
Another drawback of multiple photographic cameras is that the jerky movement of the plate is constant and invariable, so that the number of shots and their dimensions cannot be changed. This is why we generally use a very large number of negatives; for this reason, these very small prints cannot be retouched and do not lend themselves to considerable enlargement.
The camera according to the invention makes it possible to eliminate these drawbacks.

quick and simple because it has frosted glasses: on the sides of the plate so that the frosted glasses at the right places can, alternately with the plate, occupy / in front of the field of the image, so that the focus point is done without removing the shutter with the device plate.
In this way, the focusing on the frosted glass or the back of the focused image with regard to the sharpness and determination, the layout, the size of the head, e can be done at least for each series. of images, from which on the same plate can be photographed various head positions and sizes of the same person, or. even pictures of different people, we of the same p @ or even pictures of different people, or of the same person wearing different costumes or clothes, as well as pictures of the foot, etc. In addition, the first image in each series can be brought into focus until shortly before exposure, which is of greatest importance: for portraiture, where it is a question of capturing the exact expressions.
Another important characteristic of the apparatus in question, oest that one can vary the number of pho and the dimensions thereof within the greatest possible limit; then, one can take on the same plate of: large photographs and small and .finally .all this can be done without having to remove the frame and the plate of the apparatus; the mask devices, which limited the field of the image and thus determine the dimensions of the image (depending on the number of images on the plate), can be modified, not only without the need to remove the appliance frame but also when the shutter is pulled out and whatever the position of the appliance frame.
This special feature is essential

in a camera which must combine the greatest possible speed of maneuver with the property of providing images as artistic as possible.
The invention is represented by the drawing which shows an alternative embodiment of the apparatus.
Figure 1 shows the device going. behind; Figure 2 is a section taken along the line II-II in Figure 1; FIG. 3 is a variant of the jerk device for the vertical movement of the plate; Figure 4 shows an arrangement for the focusing movement of the lenses, viewed from above; Figure 5 shows a special embodiment of the adjustable mask device; FIG. 6 is the representation of a device for adjusting and fixing the speed of the shutter; FIG. 7 represents an alternative embodiment of the device for limiting the horizontal movement of the plate; Figure 8 is a modified embodiment thereof; Figure 9 shows another embodiment of the. adjustable mask device;
Figure 10 is a section taken along the line X-X of Figure 1.
The lenses, the shutter and the bellows of the apparatus can be of any construction known heretofore. the shutter can however be constructed so as to open automatically by any process eonnn with each jerk movement of the plate, that is to say each time a new part of the plate enters the field of the 'picture. Instead of bellows, it is possible to use a sealed metal jacket or the like in which the lens slides.
To modify the dimensions of the field of the image and therefore of the photos to be taken, both in height and in width and in respective spacing, the various parts of the plate on which each image is taken must be fixed in their exact position in the field of the image at

using interchangeable maneuvering devices comp @ a bar or bars in which holes, protrusions or the like, attached to mobile parts are made:
(rigid) mechanism and working with protrusions, holes, hollows or. analogues of the rigid parts (mobile of the mechanism. Various construction methods of these parts are described in what follows with the reference from
The apparatus comprises a back plate 1 in which there is a hole 2 on which various ma or the like can be placed in order to modify the dimensions of the image.
This masking can be done in various ways; the simplest is that which consists in making use of removable masks held in place by clamps or organs of the same. A suitable device consists of a bar in lacquer are provided with openings having the dimensions and. desired and which can slide in the plane of the back plate, which, for this purpose, carries notch guides. For the greatest possible number of variations, it is possible to make a flexible bar which is then wound on dem reels.
In an alternative construction, one can use a rigid bar 3, Figure 9, pierced with a single open! (or an opening at each end so that we can t @ the bar); in contrast to this opening on, of these openings the bar has guides 4 in which we can place openings 6 of various shapes. In another variant of construction, the bar is replaced by a dial disc so as to rotate eccentrically with respect to the opening 2; on its periphery, this disc is provided with a certain number of mask insertion devices in the manner of the well-known rotary diaptes.
Finally, the change of masks can be done as shown in Figure 5.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
In this variant, there is in the rear plate 1 a preferably cylindrical bush 1, made of metal, a little recessed in the wall to allow the metal flange 8 of a metal cap 9, when the latter is inserted directly into the socket, to be in line with the wall. In the base of the cap there is a lack opening 11.
The rear plate 1 carries a guide 12, formed for example by a bar in the form of an angle or U. A support, described below, carrying a black flap 13 is located in a frame 14 preferably open at the top to allow the introduction of the support and, at the rear, the frame 14 carries a bar 15 in the form of T which slides in the guide 12 so that the frame 14 with its shutter support and the shutter 13 itself can be moved horizontally.
To make the assembly of the back plate 1 and the frame 14 light-tight, it is possible to mount on the two vertical sides of the frame 14 cross-members with an L-shaped section, held elastically fixed under pressure on the back plate 1.
The shutter support consists of a frame 16 assembled at its lower end with a horizontal frame part and a back plate 17 provided with an elastic clip 18, figure 1. This clip serves for three purposes. By engaging the top edge of the. flap 13, located in the support, the flap is held in place in the latter. By engaging a transverse rod of the inner frame 16, (shutter support), the spring clamp maintains the rear plate 17 in the required relationship with the shutter and the support and, finally, with the aid of a lug 19 carried by the clamp, the support 16, the flap 13 and the back plate 17 can be lifted as a unit.
Between the T-shaped bar 15 and the guide 12, there are leaf springs 20 or. organs of the same kind,

On the inner face of the back plate 17 are further leaf springs, the springs 22, which push the shutter 13 fully onto the back plate 1.
C springs therefore ensure, on the one hand, a pressure of the shutter preventing the passage of light and, on the other hand, the smooth handling and elastic sliding of the frames.
The horizontal sliding movement of the frame 14 can be achieved, for example, by means of a rack 24 located on a bar 23 fixed to the frame or to a part of it.! - thereof and moving with it and a toothed wheel 25 permanently attached to the guide 12, the teeth of which mesh with those of the rack which has just been discussed and which is operated by a lever, a handwheel or a member. analogue 26 protruding to the outside. In another variant of this device, FIG. 7, use is made of a threaded spindle rotating in fixed bearings 27 and on which the aid of a handle 29 projecting outside is acted on.
A bar in the form of an angle iron 30 fixed to the horizontally movable frame 14 carries at its lower end a nozzle 31 internally threaded for the spindle 28.
To ensure the exact position of the various images on the plate, the guide 12 can be provided with a spring 32, shown: carrying a projection 33 which, when the frame 14 and the plate are in place, penetrates into reducers 34 of the ba @ 23; the latter is interchangeable. The number of redu @ 34 of bar 23 determines the number of images in a series
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
horizontal; by replacing one bar by another, of which the number of reduction differs, it is possible to modify the number of images in a horizontal series.
The number and size of the images in a horizontal series is determined practically by the size of the plate itself and therefore nothing prevents taking photos of different sizes in the same series provided that the photographic field determined by the objective lens is large enough to cover the widest possible width. The mask of the opening 2 must be changed according to the width that we want to give to the image.
Instead of determining the position of the image on the plate using the hollows of the bar 23, in question, and the spring 32, it is possible to replace the toothed wheel which IF engages in the rack 24 by the wheel 35, FIG. 8, only part of the periphery of which is provided with teeth 36; if this wheel is interchangeable, the size of the image can be adjusted, since the number of teeth determines the distance over which the rack 24 and the frame 14 move with each rotation of the wheel. It is also possible to replace this toothed wheel and this rack by a disc which engages in a reduction of the rod of the rack 24.
Figure 3 shows a device for adjusting the vertical displacement of the plate. Between the outer frame 14 and the frame 16 reserved for the black flap or the rear plate 17 of the latter, there is a pawl device oomprenant an oliquet 37 and a pawl operating spring 38; on the interchangeable frame 14 is an interchangeable bar 40 carrying a number of teeth 39 equal to the desired number of horizontal series of photos. When the frame 14 and with it the plate, has reached one of its extreme positions, the pawl 37 is released by a finger 41; the framework
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
16 thus descends under the action of gravity until the pawl 37 enters into engagement with the tooth 39a is tro immediately below.
The release of the eliquet 37 can be done automatically thanks to the fact that the lug 41 hits a fixed stop when the cadre has reached one of its extreme positions. After the frame has descended in this way one tooth, the horizontal movement can take place in a direction opposite to the previous one, with the result that the whole plate engaged by the frame penetrates so sively into the photographic field, being since the above maneuver also occurs when the frame has reached its opposite extreme position.
Another variant of this device for moving the plate in the vertical direction is shown in FIG. 1. @ one of the frame sides of the black shutter support 16 is, after having been, if desired, pushed upwards, provided with upper end of a guide pin or hook 42, which is guided on a track 43 formed in the back plate as shown. This track is provided with reductions, which, like the hollows 34 of the bar 23 .se to fix the separate postions of the frame horizontally, that the track 43 guides both the horizontal movement and vertical movement of the frames 14 and 16.
The pin or the hook 42 is then alternatively raised or lowered when moving from a hollow to the hollow in which it engages under the action of its own and is guided in the outer frame 14. Assuming that the pin or the hook 42 during its left-right movement is guided by the track 43, the weight of the frame and of the flap chasing pushes it back on the bottom of the track 43a down, as soon as it has reached the extreme right point of the track 43; lateral movement can then continue
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
right to left on track 43a and so on.
The tracks in question can be formed in a plate provided with recesses (or in a plate to which cross members are fixed); these plates are mounted interchangeably on the backplate 1., so that the number of photo sets, the number of photos in each series, the interval between two series and the interval between photos of the same series can be changed easily and quickly. Instead of placing the track system above the frames and the plate, we can place them below them; in this case, the arm of the frame 16 is carried downwards.
Although it is generally possible to arrange the system of the tracks on an ad hoc plate or to spare them in a plate which is then fixed to hooks or similar members to make it interchangeable and that, in this oas , a reduction is formed in the rear plate 1 for the engagement of said plate, this plate can also be placed in the plane of the rear plate 1; in this case, the frame system can be lifted slightly with respect to the rear plate 1. This is achieved by placing on the front of the frame 16, a wooden plate or a similar member which serves to lift the frame. the required distance from plate 1; the wooden plate is provided with an opening opposite the opening 2 of the back plate 1.
By this means, we realize the advantage of preventing possible false light projections coming from the sides of the frame system from reaching the plate directly; on the contrary, they are diverted around the corner through the round hole provided in the wooden plate.
Opposite the opening 2 of the rear plate 1, there is a lens 44, for example on the rigid guide 12; through this one can observe a disc or. panel, in frosted glass 45 or 45a mounted on the other side of the frame 14 of
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
level with the opening 2 and in the plane of the photographic plate; the horizontal movement of the frame 14 is such that when one of the frosted glass panels has reached one of the ends of its vertical path, it is in m position exactly opposite to the opening 2.
In this way, it is possible to focus on the ground glass whenever the plate has reached one of its extreme horizontal positions. This is not only very important from the point of view of controlling the reception of a large scale. number of images. as exposed, but it is also an absolute necessity when one has to modify the dimensions of the Images by alternating the vertical or horizontal limiting device with the interconnection of the masks.
The frosted glass panel 45 and 45a can normally be covered with a shutter or a hat which is operated by hand, either automatically when the i is examined on the frosted glass which is automatically closed on it. This is either under the action of its own weight or through the movement of the frame thanks to the introduction of an only suitable organ, so that the penetration of the false light from the rear, through the frosted glass , be made possible
Between the obturator and the operating device of the plate there may be an automatic operating device intended to open the obturator as soon as one of the frosted glass discs enters the field of the image, and the ma :
open until the frosted glass disc reoommen leaves the image field. This can be achieved, for example: by using a T-shaped bar 15 which, when! reaches the end of its horizontal movement, moves a pin or a similar member carried by the plate j 1 and in relation to the shutter. When the shaped bar begins its recoil movement, the pin is again
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
released.
In addition to the automatic shutter opening movement described above, before focusing on the ground glass and closing the shutter at the end of this focus. point, we can provide the camera with an automatic exposure device, which releases the shutter each time a new portion of the plate enters the field of the image. This arrangement prevents the operator from forgetting to expose part of the plate and also to expose the same part of it twice.
In multi-shot cameras, of designs hitherto known, there is such an automatic connection between the movement mechanism and that of the shutter, but this connection prevents the variation of the number from being effected. and dimensions of the images, which is achieved with the present invention. It is thus possible to allow the partially toothed wheel 35, which has been discussed and which actuates the rack 24, to actuate the shutter release device at a time when it does not set the rack 24 in motion and with it the plate and the replacement of this wheel does not change the manner in which the release occurs.
To achieve simply and easily the change of the exposure speed, one can use a rack 47 which penetrates into the side wall 46 of the device, see fig 6; this rack is pushed by a leaf spring 48 or similar member located above meshing with a toothed wheel 50 located on the shutter adjustment disc 49; by providing the rack 47 with a collar 52 which can be wedged thereon in various positions indicated by the references 51 and which thirsty abuts on the wall of the device or on a rigidly mounted projection, during the movement of the rack, we always ensure the exact adjustment.
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
The rear plate 17 is removable to allow the i daotion of the negative and when the light source is placed behind the apparatus, it can be used to enlarge them because the negative can be placed in a support without covering the back; then, we move it in the same way that 1 plate is moved when taking a photo until the image that we want to enlarge is located opposite 1 tare of the mask.
In the apparatus described where the various photos taken are extremely small, it is necessary that we then very carefully adjust the distance between the lens and the plate. This is achieved with the aid of the device of FIG. 4 In a carcass 53 are located the bearings of an axis 54 <at its end projecting the carcass, carries a flywheel 55. the carcass, the axis 54 carries a bevel pinion 56 which engages another bevel pinion, the pinion 57 mounted on another 58 of the frame.
This checkerboard axis 58 'also protrudes: from the carcass and carries in this place an endless screw 5 @ in turn carrying a manohon internally threaded nozzle 60 to which the lens holder is fixed. As axis 54 rotates, axis 58 also rotates and the lens holder moves with the lens on screw 59.
