"PERFECTIONNEMENTS AUX APPAREILS DE BRISE DE VUES
CINEMATOGRAPHIQUES".
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"IMPROVEMENTS TO SCREENING DEVICES
CINEMATOGRAPHICS ".
This invention relates to motion picture screening apparatus and more particularly to such apparatus containing multiple rotating objectives.
Cinematographic cameras that have multiple rotating lenses. for example double, that is to say with two extreme elementary objectives, are. advantageous in cinematographic shooting, but considerable difficulty is encountered in establishing such objectives with coincident focal points.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Since it is essential, in order to establish sharp and well-defined photographic images, that the focal point of an objective be located at a defined distance from the film, it is obvious that, if the focal points of a dual objective do not coincide, photographic images will not be equally sharp unless the focus of each lens has been moved to the desired position relative to the film at the time the corresponding lens makes the photographic impression.
It is therefore evident that if the focal points of a double rotary lens do not coincide, it is necessary to provide some device by which each of the focal points is brought to the proper position with respect to the film while the objective which has this foyer makes a photographic impression on the film.
Since the film driving mechanism of a motion picture camera must be free from vibration, it must be of such a nature that it operates smoothly and without jerking or shock.
In addition, the focal point must remain in the same position, relative to the film, throughout the period of the photographic printing period.
The device must also include an adjustable shutter effective and suitable for taking pictures through both ends of the dual lens, and the lens must be capable of being properly focused during operation. of the device.
The device which is the object of this invention achieves all of the above-mentioned desiderata as well as other desirable results and enables the efficient use, in cinematographic shooting, of a multiple rotating lens whose focal points do not coincide. these foci being brought to the suitable distance from the film during operation of the device, the invention will be described hereinafter in more detail.

67.
Behind the scenes at. curved film 68 is a photographic film 69 which is capable of receiving an intermittent vertical movement of the device usually provided for this purpose
Outside the casing is secured to the front wall 10 of this casing a rotary shaft 70 carrying angle pinions 71 and 72 The pinion 71 meshes with an angle pinion 73 carried by a shaft 74 of which a part thread cooperates with a thread of the. sliding plate 34; and the pinion 72 meshes with a pinion 75 carried by a shaft 76, a threaded portion of which cooperates with an internal thread of the sliding plate 54.
A nut 77 is screwed onto the threaded part of the shaft 70 and provided with an index. 78 which moves along a ladder 79 carried by the. anterior wall 10
The operation of the device is as follows
The wing nut 53 is loosened and the two pairs of fins 37 and 37 'of the shutter are moved relative to each other by operating the button 52 and when these pairs of fins are separated. one from the other by the required distance, the wing nut 53 is tightened completely, which rigidly blocks the fins.
The drive shaft 14 is then rotated with the aid of a crank 80, which rotates the shutters 3737 '1a. box 29 and the objective box 60.
Each rotation of the housing 60 and of the double lens carried by this housing thus prints two photographic images on the film. 69 to. through the opening 81 of the front wall 10 of the box.
If the focal point b of the objective 67 is located on the axis of rotation of the shaft 23 and suitably placed with respect to the film 69 to ensure that a correct photographic image is obtained on this film. at. through the said objective 67, it is / ..,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
obvious that the focal point A of the objective 66 will have to be brought on the axis of rotation of the shaft when the image is taken through this objective.
This is obtained by the movement of the lens case from the position of FIG. 2, in which the focus B of the lens 67 is located on the axis of rotation of the shaft 23, to a position in which the focus 4 is itself on this axis, as follows
The slide 59 is moved by the contact of the rollers 62, 62 on the cam track 26. As the cam track 26 is not circular, this slide will slide along the stepped guide 57 58, driving the objective box 60 in its movement. The cam track 26 has a contour such as the focus 1! is located on the axis of rotation of the shaft 23 while c and shaft describes an arc C D of 70, the objective 66 then being directed outwards.
It can thus be seen that a constant rotation of the motor shaft will have the effect of rotating the double lens and that, at the same time, the two focal points will always occupy a suitable position with respect to the film during the period of photographic printing. the objective can be focused during its rotation by rotating the nut 82 carried by the shaft 70 which has the effect of simultaneously moving the two sliding plates 34 and 54 carrying the objective and the control mechanism
It will be appreciated that the device according to the invention is such as to allow a double rotating objective whose focal points do not coincide to be employed in such a way that each focal point comes automatically to. the photographic position ..- suitable graphics during the exposure period.
The invention is not limited to the details of construction described and shown, these having been indicated only by way of example.
