<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Un conduit hori- zontal 77 est relié à la partie supérieure de l'arbre creux 63 et communique avec celui-ci pour assurer la transmission de l'as- piration. Sur ce conduit 77 est articulée la fourche 78 d'un laquelle antre conduit 79, qui peut tourner et dans la tête 80 de/ tourne le porte-cape 17, La fourche 78 comporte un bras 81 portant un galet 82, qui est engage dans une rainure-came du plateau 18;

<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
L'invention est également caractérisée par les points suivants, pris séparément ou en combinaison;

IMPROVEMENTS TO MANIPULATING MECHANISMS OF CIGAR ENVELOPES OR CAPES.
The present invention relates to cigar wrapper cutting and handling mechanisms for cigar making machines, and it mainly relates to a mechanism which will cut and transport the wraps at a greater speed than prior known mechanisms. , this improved mechanism performing these operations without significantly reducing the time available to perform the operations of laying the tobacco leaf and applying the wrapper.
In machines of this type, each tobacco leaf to form a wrapper must be carefully rolled out

Rather, a series of rollers are passed over the dies to cut the tobacco leaf, this cutting being affected while the die is in front of the operator and as the operator moves rolls by hand on the sheet. matrix. Thus, the time required for the à600apsgo B'ajou% ai% to the time required to lay or apply the oape during one operating cycle of the. machine.
Accordingly, in accordance with the present invention, the cap is cut to a die while still. the die comes into the position of application of the tobacco leaf, in order to prevent the cutting means from interfering with the operation of applying the tobacco leaf. It is thus possible to increase the operating speed of the machine while leaving, as previously, the same time to perform the operation which normally requires a given time depending on the operator's address.
The invention also aims to simplify the machine and to obtain a greater speed of operation by cutting the cap by passing the dies under

annuities for the convenience of application and transportation operations.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a construction which, because no positively controlled roll passes over the dies immediately after the operator has finished performing a tobacco search, allows the operator to no longer taking care to remove his hands in good time, which, despite the safety devices used, tended to slow down the work because the operator kept the machine stopped for a little longer than necessary.
To this end, the invention consists of certain constructions and combinations of members which will be described in detail below.
In the attached drawing:
Fig.1 is a plan view, with parts broken away, showing a machine built activating the invention.
Fig.2 is a front view uxao, part in section snif vant line 2-2 of fig.1, of the machine shown in fig.l.

successively bring said banks into the action zone of. said mechanism and away from it, ruleaux- adjacent to the path followed by these banoa and cooperate with the dies to cut wrappers in the tobacco leaves placed on the dies during the movement of the benches.
In the preferred construction, these means comprise a rotating turret carrying the benches and comprising suction ducts leading to the benches, as well as distribution means arranged along the same axis as said turret and acting under the effect of the relative movement. of the latter, and distribution means for regulating the suction exerted on the benches.
Preferably, said means comprise a rotary turret carrying the benches and comprising vertically movable plungers in the masters carried by the benches, as well as cams arranged along the same axis Qae the turret and acting on us the effect of relative rotational movement of the latter, these oames raising and lowering said plungers in synchronism with the movement of the turret.
the construction of the various means and members mentioned can be modified within wide limits without going beyond the scope of the invention, because the partial device chosen to describe the invention is only one of the many possible embodiments. of the latter, the invention is therefore not limited to the precise details of the construction described and represented here.
Since each tobacco leaf to form a wrapper must be carefully fitted to the die to prevent holes or defects from being included in the blank, the speed of operation of an ordinary device at to apply wrappers on cigar dolls is limited by the more or less rapidity with which it works
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the operator.
In order to avoid that the operating speed is thus limited, the present device for applying the caps is provided with two dies mounted opposite each other on a turret rotating intermittently, so that the we can use the time required for cutting the blank and for it to be driven by the cap holder, the operator being able to start feeding the second die immediately after the turret has been set in motion to clear the cap. first die ,, We take advantage of the fact that the dies are mobile to make the die-cutting rollers fixed,
and to simplify the device for transporting by suction and the device ensuring the vertical movement of the dies.
In the drawing, it can be seen that the table 10 of the cigar-making machine carries a console 11 serving to support a shaft 12 of the turret 13, a support 14 for carrying the cutting rollers 15, a support 16 to carry the cap holder 17 and its cam plate 18, as well as the frame 19 of the device for applying the caps,
A hub 20 is arranged on the support part of the console 11 and fits freely on the shaft 12; this hub 20 carries an intake and suction pipe SI in which a fixed suction pipe 22 is engaged.
This tubing 21 has, on its upper side, a fixed closure plate 23 in which households are suitable suction openings 24 (fig.4). On the plate 23 rests a divider block 25 lies freely on the shaft 12, and on the upper flange or rim 26 of the block 25 rests the lower flange 27 of the hub 28 of the turret table 13 which is immobilized on the. The pin 59 is maintained raised. by a spring 62 attached at one end to pin 59, and at its other end to table 10.
The link 51 actuating the caliper 48 being articulated at a point located beyond the pivot 49 of the latter, the pins 46 will move in the opposite direction to that of the lever 52 actuating the link 51, so that the movement of the lever 52 up, boosts spindle 59 and simultaneously lowers spindle 4, while moving lever 52 downwards will lower spindle 59 and raise spindle 49.
The movement of the lever 52 upwards, thereby unlocks the turret of the divider unit 25, and the locking
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
It to table 10 of the cigar-making machine, while moving lever 52 downwards unlocks table turret 10 and locks it to divider block 25.
The turret table thus turns by half a revolution. it then remains motionless while the divider block moves backwards, it turns another half-revolution during the next upward movement of the. block / divider. it then stops, and so on.
The cam groove 56 is shaped so that the lever is actuated a little before the turret. Thus, the pin 59 is disengaged from the turret ,, and the pins 44 come into engagement with the hub before the turret turns forward a fraction of a turn ,, the turret remaining locked following the engagement of the bloo with divider with the arm 29 which is then stationary. A lost movement of the lever 52 is ensured, from the nut 59b to the shoulder 59a. so that spindle 59 is only lowered when spindle 44 is fully engaged with the turret hub.
So when the machine is started after a cap has been placed on the die, no time is wasted as the turret is unlocked from the machine frame and locked to the divider bloo *
A suction is excreted on the part of the support 16 carrying the cap holder by a hollow shaft 63 connected, by a pipe 64, to a suction pipe 65, inspiration being regulated by a valve 66 which is attached to a lever 67 having its fulcrum on a shaft 68 and carrying a roller 69 engaged in a cam groove of the cam 41.
Oral shaft 63 receives a swaying movement from a toothed sector 70, which is attached thereto and engages with a toothed sector 71 rotating on a

axis 72 carried by a console 73 fixed to the. underside of table 10, sector 71 comprises an arm 74 carrying a roller
75 carrying a cam 76 mounted on the shaft 42.
A horizontal duct 77 is connected to the upper part of the hollow shaft 63 and communicates with the latter to ensure the transmission of the suction. On this duct 77 is articulated the fork 78 of which another duct 79, which can turn and in the head 80 of / turns the cap holder 17, The fork 78 has an arm 81 carrying a roller 82, which is engaged in a cam groove of the plate 18;
this fork also has a tab 83 on which is pivotally mounted an elbow lever 84, one arm of which carries a roller 85 engaged in a second cam-groove of the plate 18, and the other arm of which is connected, by a bar 86, to an elbow lever 87 mounted on the rod of the cap holder 17.
The movement of the toothed sector 70 forces the duct
77 to oscillate and this conduit, in turn * by means of the cam control of the arms 81 and 84, produces the desired movement of the cap holder which first comes into the receiving position above the plunger 33 and in alignment therewith, then in the dispensing position at the folding end of the device 19 for winding the tape at the desired angle with respect to the axis of the cigar doll c, and finally in the position of winding along the cigar doll, following the. shape of the latter.
When the cap holder 17 is in the receiving position above the posterior matrix, the plunger 33 of the latter is lifted, to meet the cap holder, by a spring.

The collar 26 conforms so that each plunger 33, when in the position for feeding a tobacco leaf in front of the operator, is lifted a short distance above the knives 91, by so as to protect the operator's hands and to allow the tobacco leaf to be adjusted without damaging the latter.
While the. turret moves and the die carrying a tobacco leaf passes under the cutting rollers 15, the plunger 33 is lowered slightly below the knives 91, so as to ensure a clean cut, and $ when it arrives at In the dispensing position of a cape, the upper angled portion 92 of the collar 26 allows the plunger 33 to rise and come into engagement with the cap holder, as shown on the right side of FIG. 3.
The roller device 15 is mounted, in the support 14, on a pivot 93 subjected to the pressure of a spring, so that the roller device can be momentarily moved out of the way by an oscillating movement. , if desired.
In order to allow the dies to be fed more easily, a table 94, partially surrounding the housing or casing 95 of the turret 13, is secured to the base 10 by means of posts 96.
To keep the excess pieces of the tobacco leaves on the benches, while allowing the transport of the cut wrapper and then to release the excess material so that it can be removed at the place of the receiving position, the plungers 33 have holes 97 (figs. 3 and 4) communicating, through orifices 98 formed in the table 10 of the turret 13, with one side of the suction chambers 30, and the

dies 34 have holes 99 and slots 100 communicating, by orifices 101 formed in the die holder plate 102, the guide plate 103 and the table 10 of the turret 13,
with the other side of the suction chambers 30. The suction openings 24, 31 and 32 are arranged so that they coincide with the openings 97, 99 and 100 to exert the maximum suction on the entire tobacco leaf during half a revolution of the turret, from the moment when the die leaves the position of application of the wrapper, facing the operator, until, after having passed the cutting rollers 15, it arrives in the dispensing position under the cap holder 17, When the die is in this last position,
the suction in the side of the chamber 30 corresponding to the plunger and being transmitted through the orifices 97 made in the plunger 33, is interrupted, so that the suction exerted in the cap holder 17 can lift the cap. cape of the matrix, but the suction exerted in the side of the chamber 30 corresponding to the matrix and being transmitted through the openings 99 and 100 made in the matrix 34, suffers, in order to maintain the.
excess material from the tobacco leaf on said die until shortly before the latter returns to the feed position, so that the operator can remove this excess material when the die arrives in the latter position , in which the suction is re-established to bring the next tobacco leaf.
When the tobacco leaf is applied to the die, a portion of the suction exerted on the plunger and the die 34 continues to not be exerted, so as to allow the operator to easily move the nozzle. tobacco to adjust it as desired, but as soon as the turret

begins to rotate and the elements coincide, maximum suction occurs, so that the adjusted tobacco leaf is held securely in place as it passes under the die rollers. In view of the above, any further description of the operation of the mechanism is omitted for the sake of brevity.
The term "wrapper" is understood to mean both the wrapper proper, that is to say the outer casing of the cigar, and the sub-wrapper which surrounds the gut of the cigar.
ABSTRACT
