<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Improvements to machinery for manufacturing oîgareaut
The present invention relates to machines for making cigars comprising a turret carrying two dies for cutting the oapes, in order to ensure the distribution, - tion of the oapes, in order to ensure the distribution of the wraps at high speed .
The main object of the invention is a divider device with controlled locking, of simple construction and in which the ratio between the maximum speed and the speed
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
minimum movement is low, ensuring smooth running of the turret at high speed *
In cigar-making machines with two matrioes, the die-holder turret rotates halfway after a piece of tobacco leaf has been placed on a wrapper-cutting die, each oape being cut from the tobacco leaf. placed on the die while the latter is unraveling, and is then gripped by the suction head of the cap holder while the next tobacco leaf is dispensed by the operator. According to the present invention,
the cape is cut out so that the matrioe-carrying turret is stationary; therefore, the invention also relates to a novel device acting to advance the tobacco leaf from the leaf dispensing position to the position for uncutting the hoods, and to cut the wrapper from this leaf while the turret is in operation. motionless.
Each die is mounted on a suction table supporting the tobacco leaves and on which the piece of tobacco leaf is held by suction as it is driven by the turret to, the cap cutting position, where the wrapper is cut and removed from the die by being lifted up to the head of the conveyor device ,.
teta on which it is held by suction during transport to the device for applying the wrappers in which it is wound on the cigar doll * In order to perform the various aspirations, the table of the turret rotating by a intermittently and its fixed support frame have axial openings, so that the movement of the turret ensures the various desired coincidences of said openings, the suction being further regulated by a slide actuated by an oame. The inven-

tion has, therefore, also for object novel suction means.
The dividing devices employed heretofore to impart an intermittent movement to the die-holder turret had the disadvantage, owing to the type of mechanism used, of operating at a fairly high speed during part of each revolution, which caused a more or less jerky movement of the turret and was prejudicial to the proper functioning of the dividing mechanism. The present divider device overcomes this disadvantage in that, during its operation, it has a much more uniform movement, which ensures much smoother turret performance.
To this end, on the turret shaft is mounted a disc carrying two diametrically opposed rollers these rollers engaging in a divided oame-groove closed in a cam receiving a rotational movement of the main shaft of the machine to be manufactured the oigars, through a gear mechanism. During each revolution of this oame, the groove-cam determines the inversion of the position of said rollers, which causes the shaft of the turret to perform a half revolution. For the purpose, the invention consists of certain constructions and combinations of members described in detail below.
In the attached drawing:

In the implementation of the invention, a rotating support is provided, - two suction tables supporting tobacco leaves and mounted at diametrically opposed points on said support, each table carrying a die for cutting the wrappers, - means for rotating said support intermittently by displacements of 180, to successively bring each suction table from the position of distribution of the tobacco leaves to the position for cutting the wraps, - a cutting roller intended to cooperate with the cutting die of the suction table while it is in the position for removing the wrappers, in order to cut a wrapper from a tobacco leaf placed on said die, - and a mechanism for moving the cap said roller on the die of the suction table, in the position for cutting the oapes,
to cut a wrapper from the tobacco leaf placed on the die while the rotating support is stopped. In the form of pre- '

fée, the di @ s means comprise a shaft on which the support is mounted, a disc carried by the said shaft and comprising, on its outer faoe, two rollers arranged at diametrically opposed points, - a rotary cam having a groove -circular cam receiving these two rollers to prevent said shaft from turning,
said groove-oame having a non-circular part and said cam also having a groove connecting the opposite parts of this groove-oame and intended to receive one of said rollers while the other roller is engaged in the non-circular part of the cam-groove, - and a mechanism for rotating the cam in a continuous manner to successively force each of the rollers to enter the non-circular part of the groove-o, and to rotate said shaft by half. revolution.
Further, in the preferred construction there is also provided suction means controlled by the rotation of said support and connected to said tables to hold therein a tobacco leaf and release the cut wrapper, while each suction table remains. stopped in the position for cutting the caps, these suction means also comprising a drawer controlled by a cam and actuates independently of the movement of said support.
The construction of these various means and members can be modified within wide limits without going beyond the scope of the invention, because the particular device chosen to describe the invention is only one of the many possible embodiments of the latter. . The invention is therefore not limited to the specific construction described and shown here.
Referring to the drawing, it can be seen that the turret support 6 is mounted on a shaft 7 capable of thundering in bearings 8 of a turret frame 9, supported by the part
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
top of the main frame 10 of the cigar making machine, using a fixing bolt 11. The turret frame has, near its base, a bracket 12 fixed by a bolt 13 to the main frame 10, this the latter also having a fixing bolt 14 disposed symmetrically with respect to the bolt 13. On the support 6 are mounted two suction tables supporting the tobacco leaves and arranged at diametrically opposed points on this support. Said suction tables comprise die holders 15, and rods 17 are mounted so as to be able to slide in the bearing surfaces 16 of the die holders 15.
Said rods 17 support hollow slides 18, which fit freely in plates 19 fixed to the matrix carriers 15 and supporting die envelopes 20. To each plate 19 is fixed a die 21 for removing the capes, which is held on. said plate by clamping members 22.
The main frame 10 of the cigar manufacturing machine supports the main shaft 23 and a shaft 24, and it also carries a plate or table 25 on the lower side of which is pivotally mounted an arm 26 carrying a cutting roller. 78, which cuts the cap on the posterior matrix, the outline of which only is shown in fig. 1, while the operator feeds the anterior die shown in cross section, while the tcurelle is stationary.
A gear wheel 27, mounted on the shaft 23 (fjg. 6) actuates a gear wheel 28 carried by a shaft 29 which is supported by a bracket 30 presented by the turret frame 9. The shaft 29 carries a bevel wheel 31 engaged with uneroue oonique 32 mounted on a shaft 33 journaled in a bearing 34 of the console 12 of the turret frame. On the lower end of the shaft 33 is wedged a cam 35 with which engage rollers 36 and 37 carried by a disc 38 fixed to the shaft 7 of the turret.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
The rollers 36 and 37 (fig. 2) are told on axes 39 supported, at diametrically opposed points, by the disc 38. The oame groove of the oame 35 is circular except for a part 40 which is centered on the outside and then on the inside. . The cam-groove, at the location of part 40, extends outwardly from its pitch circle over a distance equal to half the distance oomprise between the axes of the rollers 36 and 37, minus the distance between l 'axis of the shaft 7 of the turret and the pitch circle of the groove-oame 35, so that this part 40 will receive the roller 36 or 37 when it is in the position indicated in lines dotted at 36' in the fig. 2.
A slightly curved groove 41 extends across the oame from one side of the circular cam groove to the other, generally perpendicular to a radial line passing through part 40 and at a distance of the most point. outside thereof equal to the distance between the axes of the rollers 36 and 37. In the position of the oame, shown in solid lines in fig. 2, the rollers 36 and 37 are both located in the circular part of the cam-groove, the roller 36 being at the rear and the roller 37 at the front, taking into account the direction of rotation of the oame indicated by arrows, thus preventing the turret shaft 7 from turning.
In the position of the cam represented by the monotated lines 40 ', 41', the roller 36, as a result of the advancing movement of the part 40 in the direction of clockwise to come to the position 40 ', has been moved outwardly along portion 40 to come into position 36 ', and roller 37 was forced to enter and move in groove 41, the positions of roller and groove being indicated at 37' and 41 ', which rotates disc 38 a quarter turn clockwise.
In the posi-
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
tion of the cam indicated by the dotted lines 40 ", 41", the roller 36 has been internally moved along the groove 40 in the circular part of the groove-oame 35, to come to the position 36 "previously occupied by the roller 37, and the latter has come out of the groove 41, which is now in the position 41 ", to come into the circular part of the cam-groove 35, in the position 37" previously occupied by the roller 36, output that the position of these rollers is maint enant exactly reversed, that is to say that the disc 38 has rotated 180 degrees, determining a half-revolution of the shaft 7 of the turret.
Then, the engagement of the rollers 36 and 37 in the rolling part of the cam groove 35, keeps the eourelle shaft locked until the part 40 of the cam returns to engage with the roller 37 and makes turn the turret shaft another half revolution. In this way, the turret receives an intermittent and equal 180 degree rotational movement.
The suction to maintain the caps on the suction tables is exeroée by means of a box 42 fixed to the chamber 43 of the turret frame 9 and connected, by an outlet pipe 44 to the flexible pipe 45 of the suction source (not shown). The chamber 43 comprises a vertical partition, advising it in two conduits 46 and 47 (fig. 3), each conduit leading to one of the suction cables and. opening there through vertical openings 48 and 49 (fig. 1).
From the suction box 42, openings give access to the ducts 46 and 47 of the chamber 43, and to a suction chamber 50 supported by a tie rod 11 and communicating with a suction console 51 leading to the cap holder (not shown) mounted above the plate or table 25.
Between the suction box 42 and the duct 46 and the chamber 50 are interposed drawers 53 and 52 intended for

adjust the suction in the slurry buckets 18 and in the porteoape, respectively, these drawers are connected, by connecting rods 54 and 55, to a lever b6 having its fulcrum on one shaft 24 and carrying a gale57 maintained in oontaot aveo a cam 58, mounted on the shaft 23, by a spring 59 fixed to the console 51, The drawer 53 controls the suction exerted on the slide of each suction table when this slide brings a piece of tobacco leaf in the posterior position of cutting the wrappers (fig.
1), the drawer 53 acts to interrupt the suction exeroed on the slide to release the disconnected oape, while the suction table remains stationary in the position of cutting the oapes, in order to allow the oape holder to remove the cape. A plate valve 60 is disposed between the turret frame 9 and the turret head 6 and is fixed to said frame 9; this plate valve 60 has a certain number of openings 61 (FIG. 4) communicating with the orifices 48 and 49 formed in the frame 9. The turret head 6 has two pairs of conduits 62, 63 and 62 ', 63 '(fig. 5).
The conduits 62 and 62 'communicate with the interior of the two sliders 18, and the conduits 63 and 63' communicate with the lower part of two casings of matrix 20 of the suction tables by openings made in the die holders 15 and in the support plates 19. In order to keep the pieces of tobacco leaf on the suction tables after they have been placed there, the slides and the die envelopes have holes giving access to the interior: of these elements.
The rotation of the turret head 6 relative to the fixed valve 60, in combination with the controlled action of the drawers 52 and 53, creates the various aspirations necessary during the different phases of the operation of the mechanism, the openings made in the valve. 60 being arranged to coincide

with the conduits 62, 62 'and 63, 63' to exert a suction on the piece of tobacco leaf from the moment when a suction table leaves the position of distribution of the tobacco leaves until the wrapper be cut.
While the turret is stationary in the position for cutting the oapes, the suction exerted in the ooulisaean is interrupted by the drawer 53, to release the cut cap, so that it can be transferred to the cap holder, the opening 62 or 62 'coinciding: at this time with the opening 61 of the valve 60 which communicates with the orifice 48 of the duct 46 controlled by the spool 53.
Suction inside the die casing is maintained through conduit 47 and ports 49,61 and 63 or 63 ', until shortly before the die returns to the sheet dispensing position tobacco, the orifice 63 or 63 'then coinciding with the full part (shown in the upper part of fig. 4) of the valve 60, after which the operator removes the waste from the cap before placing another tobacco leaf moroeam on the suction table.
The slider support rods 17 carry, at their lower ends, rollers 64 by which they rest on a circular surface forming a cam 65 and surrounding the turret frame 9. This surface forming a cam lifts each slider 18 above the die. 21 for cutting the wrappers, in the tobacco leaf dispensing position, in order to protect the operator's fingers, and it forces the slide to descend slightly below the cutting edge of the die, in the cutting position, to ensure clean and precise cutting as the die roll moves over the die. While a suction table comes to the cap cutting position,

upper of a rod 68 supported so as to be able to water in the legs 69 presented by the. turret frame chamber 43. The rod 68 is connected, by a connecting rod 70, to a lever 71 having its point of support on the shaft 24 and carrying a roller 72 held against the surface of a cam 73, mounted on the shaft 23, by a spring 74 attached to a tab of the oame 65. When the roller 72 engages with the low point of the cam 73 at the desired time, the rod 68 rises, lifting the slider 18 and bringing it into engagement with the 'dimension cap holder suction (not shown).
The oame surface 65 is part of an oonsole 75 fixed to a tampo, 76 presented by the turret frame 9 and supporting a table (not shown) for feeding the dies, this table abutting against the casing 77 of the turret .
The cutting roller 78 is mounted on an arm 26 which rotates on an axis 79 presented by the table 25, and is actuated in synchronism with the shaft of the turret, by a rod 80 connected to a lever 81 carrying a roller 82 s' engaging in the groove of a drum-shaped cam 83 mounted on the shaft 23. By performing the cutting of the caps with the aid of movable rollers while the turret is stopped, this advantage is obtained than a much larger part. operating cycle of the turret can be used for cutting only when cutting blankets by means of fixed rollers while the turret is moving, the ratio between the stop period and the movement period being 2 to 1 with this provision.
The slower cutting motion prevents any possible slippage of the cap on the die and reduces wear on the die, which increases their life.
