<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

Improvements made to the manufacture of loop chain fabrics.
The present invention relates to the manufacture of a fabric with a more or less tight texture forming a kind of canvas, the warp threads of which are attached to the weft threads by stop loops, and its main aim is to allow manufacturing. faster in order to obtain an increase in production. It is primarily intended for the manufacture using cotton waste of rags such as those used for cleaning, but various other kinds of fabrics can be made in the same way.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
According to the present invention, the weft passes through the warp threads in one direction, each warp thread being wound by a hook stitch or a stop loop around the weft thread after the latter has been put in place. .
A number of series of warp threads being juxtaposed, these threads are crossed by a number of weft threads succeeding each other, and the ends of the picks are cut between each pair of neighboring series to produce distinct strips of fabric crosswise.

For this purpose the rod b6 is carried by two end frames b8 which are pivotally mounted on the rod b7 and moved in one direction by a rod b9 overcoming the action of a spring b10 which moves the end frames. moth and rod b6 in the other direction.
The lower end of the rod b9 is connected to a crank bll (fig. 4) fixed to a rod b12 which can turn freely in a support b13fié in an adjustable manner to the vertical frame f The rod b12 carries a finger b14 actuated by a cam bl5 so as to lift the rod b12, a number of similar cams being mounted on a cam plate b16 fixed to the central shaft G. After having passed over the rod b5 each chain thread is threaded into the opening b 2 of the porto-chain element b and it is joined at this point to the .fil .. do traem A by pallet needles H a set of needles being provided for each piece of fabric.
Each needle H is mounted eccentrically or otherwise in a needle holder h sliding on rails h1 fi xed to the fixed table P. Each needle holder carries a piece of rod fh2 on which the cam bearing surfaces h3, h 'act. provided on the underside of the table F so as to induce a reciprocating movement from front to back and vice versa on the needle holder and the needle. Each rod-cam is fixed to a vertical support h5 (figure 11) mounted on a sleeve h6 (Figure 9.) crossed by the

needle holder. To prevent the cam-rod from rotating around the axis of the needle holder, the lower end of the support is split at h7 (Figure 11) so as to embrace a guide h8 (Figure 4) mounted parallel to the holder - needle.
To prevent any relative longitudinal movement. between the needle holder and the sleeve and allow the needle holder to rotate in the latter, each sleeve is split transversely at h9 (Figures 9 and 10) to allow a screw h10 or pin to pass through the slot thus provided. When this screw or pin is removed, the needle holder can be removed from the machine.
Each needle holder is arranged to receive a partial rotational movement alternately in both directions, in addition to the forward-backward and backward movements. This result is preferably obtained by providing each needle holder, near its inner end, with two pins h11 forming an angle between aisles. These pins agiaont jointly with the flat surfaces h 12 fixed at a distance to a table h which is itself fixed to the shaft G and which rotates with it.
An arm or plate h14 is fixed to the table h13 above the gap between any two neighboring surfaces h12 The pins h11, together with the planar surfaces ¯, intervals and plates mentioned above, rotate the needles, by a controlled movement, alternately in both directions as required and maintain them, by a controlled action, in the positions to which they have been brought by a rotational movement.
After each needle has finished its forward stroke and when it begins to move back, it turns so as to come

occupy a position in which the hook grasps a warp thread and pulls it inward over the inner guide rail, the needle then rotating again to bring the hook at the end to its position vertical in its inward course. The weft carrier then passes the pick through the loop of the warp thread which is suspended from the needle so as to free the end of the pallet and lowers part of the warp thread below the two guide rails, leaving the pick at the top of this thread. This position is clearly shown in figure 12.
The needle then moves outwardly, as shown in Figures 14 and 15, with the pallet returned through the first loop, as the needle passes through it. By the time the needle reaches the end of its outward stroke, the posterior end of the weft holder has released the needle, as shown in figure 16.
The needle then begins its return stroke and turns again, as shown in figure 17, to take another loop of warp thread and pass it through the loop on the needle which is It now slips out of it, as shown in Figure 18, part of the warp thread still being held by the hook of the needle. It can be seen that a stop loop was thus formed in the warp thread around the pick. As each warp thread is pulled in by the needle hook, the pick is retained by a series of spikes d which protrude from the top vertically on the inner rail D and prevent that pick from being pulled in. interior.

a knife J mounted on a / support .1 fixed to the fixed table F can be actuated by a j1 lever connecting rod system by means of a rod j2 whose upper end is connected to one of the end frames b8 oscillating as described above.
During or after the cutting operation, a retainer can be actuated to retain the pick near the posterior end of the weft holder) for ques when the deinr passes over the next set of new chain threads. length of yarn.-, weft is fed by it across the warp yarns.
When the desired length of fabric has been obtained, this latter device can be put out of action and another retainer, which can be mounted on the weft carrier, can be actuated to hold the weft in it. last for a few revolutions and prevent it from being fed into the warp threads, which produces a weftless section of warp threads forming a fringe when the fabric is cut there. This retainer is automatically or otherwise deactivated and the weft is re-held as it passes through the warp threads, so as to recommence the manufacture of a new length of fabric.
Each time a tame carrier has moved along a series of warp threads, a winding mechanism is actuated to wind the fabric. In the example shown, this winding mechanism consists of a roller K, which is shown in two parts and which carries at each end a ratchet k, this roller being carried by a shaft k1 mounted in supports k2 fixed to the rods. verticals e1 Each of these supports carries ears in which slides a rod k3 carrying a pawl k4 that a res comes out k5 engages with its ratchet and this pawl cooperates

with a spring loaded retaining pawl k mounted on a rod K7 which extends above the roller K.
The rod K3 comprises, on one of its parts, an eyelet through which one end of a lever with two arms K8 pivotally mounted on the frame f. The other arm of this lever is supported by a guide post K9 and carries a roller k10 passing over a series of cams k11 provided on a cam carrier plate k12 rigidly fixed to the central shaft 0. Each time one of these cams passes under one of the rollers k10, it raises the corresponding lever k8 and actuates the pawl K4 so as to advance the ratchet. When the fabric roll is in two pieces, two sets of cams k are provided, one for each part of the roll, these cams being arranged so that the two parts of the roll are actuated successively.
The fabric passes under its roller K above the rod k7 and arrives at a beam L (Figures 1 and 7) rotatably mounted in supports 1 fixed to the risers e1 This shaft is driven at the same time as the roller K by a ratchet ¯ 1 1 engaged with a roehet 12 mounted on the shaft o rotating with it and actuated by an elbow lever 1 3 maintained in contact with the lower end of the rod K3 by a spring 14 The ratchets actuating the take-up roller and the beam are returned 13 to their initial position by a rassort k. If this is required, a friction device can be mounted on the beam L. to keep the., - fabric taut.
The vertical shaft G may be actuated by means of any suitable gear by a main commando shaft or by any other source of motive force, a freewheel or any other device being provided to prevent the machine from turning backwards. hand or by accidentally turning it in the wrong direction.

Instead of actuating the needles successively in the manner described, they can be actuated simultaneously or in any number determined in advance, and instead of rotating the needles so that they grip the warp threads, they can be rotated. the chain support members b eccentrically or otherwise to hook the chain threads to the hooks of the needles. If desired, a device can be provided to exert traction on the weft before it reaches the weft carrier or the weft carriers.
