Definitions

  • the present invention relates to novel aromatic compounds that can be used in electronic materials such as organic semiconductor materials, organic semiconductor layers using these compounds, and organic thin-film transistors.
  • the present invention relates to aromatic compounds with specific substituents that have excellent solubility and heat resistance and are therefore applicable to a variety of device fabrication processes, as well as organic semiconductor layers and organic thin-film transistors using these compounds.
  • Organic semiconductor devices typified by organic thin-film transistors, have attracted attention in recent years due to their energy-saving, low-cost, and flexibility features not found in inorganic semiconductor devices. These organic semiconductor devices are composed of several materials, including an organic semiconductor layer, substrate, insulating layer, and electrodes, with the organic semiconductor layer, which is responsible for the movement of charge carriers, playing a central role in the device. Furthermore, since the performance of organic semiconductor devices is determined by the carrier mobility of the organic semiconductor material that makes up this organic semiconductor layer, there is a demand for organic semiconductor materials that offer high carrier mobility.
  • Generally known methods for producing organic semiconductor layers include vacuum deposition, in which organic materials are vaporized under high temperature and vacuum conditions, and coating, in which organic materials are dissolved in a suitable solvent and the solution is coated.
  • the coating method can be carried out using printing technology without requiring high temperature and vacuum conditions, which is expected to significantly reduce the manufacturing costs of device fabrication and is an economically preferable process.
  • the organic semiconductor material used in such a coating method preferably has heat resistance of 130°C or higher and a solubility of 0.1 wt% or higher at room temperature. Furthermore, in the case of transistors used for electronic paper, the carrier mobility is preferably 0.1 cm2 /V ⁇ sec or higher.
  • small molecule semiconductors with rod-shaped molecular long axes based on fused ring systems are known to be more crystalline than polymer semiconductors and therefore more likely to exhibit high carrier mobility.
  • proposed small molecule materials include 2,7-dialkyl-substituted benzothienobenzothiophenes (see, for example, Patent Document 1 and Non-Patent Document 1), 2,7-diphenyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophenes (see, for example, Non-Patent Document 2), and dithienobiphenylene derivatives (see, for example, Patent Document 2).
  • dialkyl-substituted benzothienobenzothiophene described in Patent Document 1 and Non-Patent Document 1 has a heat resistance problem in that transistor operation is lost when heated to 130°C or higher.
  • Non-Patent Document 2 The 2,7-diphenyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene described in Non-Patent Document 2 generally has little solubility in organic solvents, posing a solubility issue.
  • alkyl-substituted dithienobiphenylene derivatives described in Patent Document 2 combine high heat resistance with moderate solubility and can be suitably used in organic semiconductors, but compounds with even higher solubility are desired to be compatible with a wide range of device fabrication processes.
  • the present invention was made in consideration of the above-mentioned problems, and its purpose is to provide a new, solution-type organic semiconductor material that has high carrier mobility, high heat resistance, and high solubility.
