Definitions
- the present invention relates to a composite semipermeable membrane useful for selective separation of liquid mixtures.
- Membranes used in membrane separation include microfiltration membranes, ultrafiltration membranes, nanofiltration membranes, and reverse osmosis membranes. These membranes are used, for example, to obtain drinking water from water containing salt or harmful substances, to produce ultrapure water for industrial use, to treat wastewater, and to recover valuable resources.
- composite semipermeable membranes in which a support membrane is coated with a separation functional layer capable of separating salts and other contaminants.
- composite semipermeable membranes with a separation functional layer containing a crosslinked polyamide obtained by the polycondensation reaction of a polyfunctional amine and a polyfunctional acid halide are widely used as separation membranes with high permeability and selectivity (Patent Document 1).
- These composite semipermeable membranes are required to have high salt rejection properties so that treated water of higher quality can be obtained from salt-containing water.
- Known methods for improving the salt rejection of composite semipermeable membranes include post-treatment methods that convert the amine ends of the crosslinked polyamide in the separation functional layer through, for example, a diazo coupling reaction, contact with a bromine-containing aqueous solution of free chlorine, or contact with a low-temperature aqueous solution containing an aldehyde or epoxide (Patent Documents 2, 3, and 4).
- Patent Document 2 describes a method for obtaining permeate with a low salt concentration when treating raw water with a relatively low salt concentration of around 500 mg/L, but this method does not provide sufficient salt rejection when treating raw water with a high salt concentration, such as seawater.
- the composite semipermeable membranes described in Patent Documents 3 and 4 have low water permeability and therefore need to be operated at high pressure to produce a sufficient amount of water.
- the present invention therefore aims to provide a composite semipermeable membrane that combines salt rejection and water permeability.

Abstract
