EARLIEST PRIORITY DATE
This Application claims priority from a Complete patent application filed in India having Patent Application No. 202241031924, filed on June 03, 2022, and titled “BANANA AND ABACA PSEUDO STEM AS GROWTH MEDIUM FOR CULTIVATION OF PLANTS”
INTRODUCTION:-
This invention relates to agriculture / horticulture. Further, the invention relates to growing of plants especially for horticulture industry. Furthermore this invention relates to usage of derivative from banana or abaca pseudostem as growth medium and also as a growth medium constituent, with and without convention soil or potting soil. Still further, this invention relates to a plant growth medium in which the growth medium is extracted in various forms like particulate form, pulverized fine dust and chip form . Furthermore, this invention relates to usage of derivatives from banana or abaca pseudostem as replacement for existing growth mediums and growth medium constituents . Still furthermore, the invention relates to a method of preparing the growth medium and growth medium constituent from banana or abaca pseudostem in different forms (pelletized form, compressed brick form). Even furthermore, the invention relates to a method of preparing a pot from the banana or abaca pseudostem and the pot itself as a final product.
BACKGROUND OF INVENTION:-
DESCRIPTION OF THE RELATED ART
Mankind from immemorial time has been practicing the art of agriculture even from prehistoric days. Orientation of growth of agriculture and growing of plants in a structured manner has been the constant endeavor of humans. The ways and methods of agriculture / horticulture or simply growing of plants for food have been tailored to suit various local influences and factors.
Availability of water for irrigation, agro climatic conditions, soil conditions etc form a critical role in adoption of newer methods of cultivation.
Currently, one of the global preferred growth medium and growth medium constituents in horticulture is peat, the harvesting of which releases carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and accelerates climate change. Many of the countries are increasing the restrictions and will be banning peat extraction completely in the near future. One of the urgent needs right now is to find an environmentally friendly alternative for peat.
On the other hand, banana pseudostem is an agricultural waste after the harvesting of bananas. Farmers dispose of the same through burning of the pseudostem or putting it into landfills. This causes high Greenhouse Gas Emission(GHG) which adversely impacts the environment and community. Also, the disposal of the pseudostem is an additional burden on the farmer’s pockets. India is the biggest cultivator of Banana in the world, having about 8 lakh ha under cultivation and producing about 64 million tonnes of pseudostem annually. Currently only 10% of this pseudostem is used effectively. Given this scenario, it is of utmost importance to find sustainable and viable solutions to utilizing banana pseudostems that benefit the farmers and the environment.
A derivative of banana pseudostem as a growth medium and growth medium constituent overcomes both issues of finding a viable solution to utilizing banana pseudostem and finding an alternative for peat as growth medium (constituent) in horticulture.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION:-
Its prime object of the invention is to prepare a growth medium that can be used as in nursery, horticulture and agricultural and which can also be used as a constituent of a growth medium.
It is yet another object of the invention to provide banana and abaca psuedostem as growth medium or as a constituent of a growth medium for plant growth. The usage of this constituent is not only confined to replacement of peat as a constituent in a growth medium, but also as replacement for other growth medium constituents like bark, coco pith related products, perlite, rock wool etc.
Furthermore, it is yet another object of the invention to provide the growth medium derived from banana or abaca pseudostem where the pseudostem is dried, chopped into small pieces and/or required conditions of pH adjusted.
Still furthermore it is yet another object of the invention to composition for use of crushed pseudostem from banana or abaca plant as a growing medium with or without conventional soil or potting soil, for plant growth.
Description of the Invention
Banana and Abaca, as a rich supply of nutrients and organics, are a sparsely studied resource from the perspective of a growth medium or as a growth medium constituent.
Both Banana and Abaca belongs to the banana family, Musaceae; A banana plant can reach a height of 20 to 25 ft (6-7.5 m) The pseudo-stem is a part of the banana plant that looks like a trunk, which consists of a soft central core and tightly wrapped up to 25 leaf sheaths. These leaf sheaths unwrap from the stem and transform to recognizable banana leaves when they have matured. Each pseudostem can produce a single bunch of bananas. After fruiting, the pseudostem dies, but offshoots may develop from the base of the plant.
Abaca grows to 13-22 feet (4.0-6.7 m) and has a "false trunk" or pseudostem about 6-15 inches (15-38 cm) in diameter. The leaf stalks (petioles) are expanded at the base to form sheaths that are tightly wrapped together to form the pseudostem. There are from 12 to 25 leaves, dark green on the top and pale green on the underside, sometimes with large brown patches. They are oblong in shape with a deltoid base. They grow in succession. The petioles grow to at least 1 foot (30 cm) in length.
When the plant is mature, the flower stalk grows up inside the pseudostem. The male flower has five petals, each about 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) long. The leaf sheaths contain the valuable fiber. After harvesting, the coarse fibers range in length from 6-12 feet (180-370 cm) long. They are composed primarily of cellulose, lignin, and pectin.
The banana pseudo stem after the harvest will be the raw material for the product. The pseudo stem of the banana plant is chopped using a chopping machine with a size of chopping adjusted based on the growth medium requirement. The chopped pseudostem will be moist having a water content of more than 70 % which is sun dried. The dried pseudostem is further chopped/crushed to develop the material for suitable growth medium. The pH can be modified to accumate the requirement and can vary from 5 to 8.
Alternately, The banana pseudo stem after the harvest which will be the raw material for the new product and the pseudostem is the pseudo stem of the banana plant is squeezed to remove the sap water and the pseudostem is sun dried to remove the remaining moisture and the dried pseudostem is chopped/crushed to obtain the required size and gradation and/or hot pressed to form pot like structures
