Abstract
본 발명은 다공성의 고분자 수지로 이루어진 분리막 기재, 및 상기 분리막 기재의 적어도 일측에 부가되며, 가열시 경화반응이 일어나는 페놀 수지가 포함된 내열층을 포함하는 리튬 이차전지용 분리막에 대한 것으로, 고온에서의 열수축율이 향상되어 전극 간의 단락을 방지할 수 있다. (대표도) 도 2
Description
본 출원은 2021년 3월 19일자 한국 특허 출원 제2021-0035591호 및 2022년 3월 17일자 한국 특허 출원 제2022-0033523에 기초한 우선권의 이익을 주장하며, 해당 한국 특허 출원의 문헌에 개시된 모든 내용은 본 명세서의 일부로서 포함된다.
본원 발명은 내열성이 향상된 리튬 이차전지용 분리막에 대한 것이다. 구체적으로, 고온에서의 열수축이 감소됨으로써 내열성이 향상된 리튬 이차전지용 분리막에 대한 것이다.
리튬 이차전지는 양극과 음극 사이에 분리막이 개재되어 제조된 전극조립체를 전지케이스에 수납하고 전해액을 주입한 후 밀봉하여 제조될 수 있다.
상기 분리막은 양극과 음극 간의 전기적인 연결을 차단하여 절연성을 확보하기 위한 것으로, 리튬 이온이 이동할 수 있도록 다공성 소재로 이루어진 폴리올레핀 계열의 기재 상에 무기물과 바인더를 포함하는 코팅층이 형성된 구조로 이루어질 수 있다. 상기 폴리올레핀 계열의 소재는 열에 약한 성질이 있는 바, 상기 코팅층의 부가로 인해 고온 안전성과 기계적 특성이 향상될 수 있다.
분리막의 강도를 높이고 박막화하기 위하여, 분리막을 1축 방향 또는 2축 방향으로 연신할 수 있다. 그러나 리튬 이차전지의 온도가 증가하면 연신되었던 방향으로 분리막의 수축이 일어날 수 있다. 이로 인하여, 전극조립체 내의 양극과 음극 간에 접촉이 일어나 단락이 일어날 수 있으며, 이는 리튬 이차전지의 발화 및 폭발의 원인이 될 수 있다.
리튬 이차전지의 부피 당 용량이 증가하는 경우, 내부 단락시의 발열량도 증가하게 되는 바, 고용량의 리튬 이차전지에서 안전성 문제를 해결하기 위한 다양한 연구가 진행되고 있다.
특허문헌 1은 다공성 기재의 단면에 수계 무기물 분산액을 코팅하여 무기물층을 형성하고, 상기 무기물층이 형성된 다공성 기재의 양면에 수계 바인더 조성물로 이루어진 전극 접착층을 형성함으로써 전극에 대한 접착력이 향상된 분리막의 제조방법을 개시한다.
특허문헌 1은 분리막과 전극 간의 접착력을 향상시킴으로써 양극과 음극 간의 단락을 방지할 수 있으나, 전극 접착층에 의해 분리막의 저항이 증가할 수 있으며, 분리막 자체의 수축을 억제할 수 있는 기술을 제시하지는 못하고 있다.
특허문헌 2는 다공성 기재층의 일면 또는 양면에 형성되는 내열층, 상기 내열층 상에 형성되는 접착층을 포함하고, 상기 내열층은 무기입자가 바인더 고분자에 의해 연결 및 고정되고, 상기 접착층은 고분자 입자를 함유하는 이차전지용 복합 분리막을 개시한다.
특허문헌 2의 분리막은 내열층과 접착층을 구비함으로써 고온에서 분리막과 전극 간의 접착 강도가 향상되고 열수축율이 감소한 결과를 나타내고 있으나, 내열층의 부가로 인해 기체투과도가 증가하고 있는 바, 전해액 함침율이 감소하고 저항이 증가하는 문제를 해결하지 못하고 있다.
따라서, 리튬 이차전지용 분리막에서, 접착층을 구비하지 않더라도 분리막 자체의 열수축율이 감소됨으로써 양극과 음극의 내부 단락을 방지할 수 있고, 분리막 자체의 내열성이 향상된 기술이 필요하다.

본원 발명은 상기와 같은 문제를 해결하기 위한 것으로서, 고온에서 양극과 음극 간의 단락을 방지하여 안전성과 내열성이 향상된 리튬 이차전지용 분리막을 제공하는 것을 목적으로 한다.
이러한 목적을 달성하기 위한 본원 발명에 따른 리튬 이차전지용 분리막은, 다공성의 고분자 수지로 이루어진 분리막 기재, 및 상기 분리막 기재의 적어도 일측에 부가되며, 가열시 경화반응이 일어나는 페놀 수지가 포함된 내열층을 포함할 수 있다.
상기 분리막 기재와 상기 내열층 사이에는 무기물층이 형성될 수 있다.
상기 내열층은 레졸(resol)계 페놀 수지를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 내열층에서 상기 레졸계 페놀 수지는 고형분 전체 함량을 기준으로 0.5 wt% 내지 2.0 wt%로 포함될 수 있다.
상기 리튬 이차전지용 분리막은 150 ℃에서 MD방향과 TD방향 열수축률이 60% 이하일 수 있다.
상기 내열층의 로딩량은 2.0 g/㎡ 이하일 수 있다.
상기 분리막 기재의 제1면과 제2면 중 어느 하나에 무기물층이 형성되고, 상기 무기물층의 상면, 및 상기 무기물층이 형성되지 않은 분리막 기재의 상면에 내열층이 부가될 수 있다.
상기 분리막은 수계 분리막일 수 있다.
본 발명은 상기 리튬 이차전지용 분리막을 포함하는 전극조립체가 원통형 전지케이스에 수용된 원통형 리튬 이차전지를 제공한다.
본 발명은 상기 리튬 이차전지를 단위셀로 포함하고 전기자동차, 하이브리드 전기자동차, 플러그-인 하이브리드 전기자동차 또는 전력저장장치의 에너지원으로 사용되는 전지팩을 제공한다.
본원발명은 또한, 상기 과제의 해결 수단을 다양하게 조합한 형태로도 제공이 가능하다.
이상에서 설명한 바와 같이, 본원 발명에 따른 리튬 이차전지용 분리막은 고온에서의 열수축률이 현저히 향상되는 바, 리튬 이차전지가 고온 환경에 있을 때 분리막 수축에 의해 양극과 음극 간의 내부 단락이 일어나는 것을 방지할 수 있다.
또한, 내열층이 형성된 상태에서도 분리막의 저항을 낮은 수준으로 유지할 수 있는 바, 리튬 이차전지의 성능이 저하되는 것을 방지할 수 있다.

이하 첨부된 도면을 참조하여 본원 발명이 속하는 기술분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자가 본원 발명을 쉽게 실시할 수 있는 실시예를 상세히 설명한다. 다만, 본원 발명의 바람직한 실시예에 대한 동작 원리를 상세하게 설명함에 있어 관련된 공지 기능 또는 구성에 대한 구체적인 설명이 본원 발명의 요지를 불필요하게 흐릴 수 있다고 판단되는 경우에는 그 상세한 설명을 생략한다.

또한, 본원의 발명의 설명 및 청구범위 전반에 걸쳐서 "또는"은 별도로 언급되지 않는 한 "및"을 포함하는 것이다. 그러므로 "A 또는 B를 포함하는"은 A를 포함하거나, B를 포함하거나, A 및 B를 포함하는 상기 3가지 경우를 모두 의미한다.
본원발명에 따른 리튬 이차전지용 분리막은 다공성 구조로 이루어지고 고분자 수지로 이루어진 분리막 기재, 및 상기 분리막 기재의 적어도 일측에 부가되며, 가열시 경화반응이 일어나는 페놀 수지가 포함된 내열층을 포함할 수 있다.
상기 분리막 기재는, 예를 들어, 고밀도 폴리에틸렌, 저밀도 폴리에틸렌, 선형저밀도 폴리에틸렌, 초고분자량 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트 (polyethyleneterephthalate), 폴리부틸렌테레프탈레이트 (polybutyleneterephthalate), 폴리에스테르 (polyester), 폴리아세탈 (polyacetal), 폴리아미드 (polyamide), 폴리카보네이트 (polycarbonate), 폴리이미드 (polyimide), 폴리에테르에테르케톤 (polyetheretherketone), 폴리에테르설폰 (polyethersulfone), 폴리페닐렌옥사이드 (polyphenyleneoxide), 폴리페닐렌설파이드로 (polyphenylenesulfidro), 폴리에틸렌나프탈렌 (polyethylenenaphthalene) 및 이들의 혼합체로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 하나 이상으로 이루어질 수 있다.
리튬 이차전지는 반복적인 충방전과 같이 정상적인 사용 과정에서도 전지셀 내부에서 발생하는 열에 의해 전지셀의 온도가 증가한다. 상기 분리막 기재는 일축 또는 이축 연신하여 제조될 수 있으며, 이와 같이 연신된 분리막은 온도가 증가하면 다시 원래의 크기로 수축될 수 있다.
이와 같이 열수축성이 높은 소재를 사용하는 경우, 리튬 이차전지의 사용 중에 분리막이 수축되면 양극과 음극의 접촉이 일어나, 내부 단락이 발생할 수 있다.
이에, 본원발명은 분리막 기재의 적어도 일측면에 내열층을 부가하여 분리막의 열수축성을 줄일 수 있다.
하나의 구체적인 예에서, 상기 내열층은 고온에서 경화반응이 일어나는 레졸계 페놀 수지를 포함할 수 있다. 도 1은 레졸계 페놀 수지에 대한 구조식을 도시하고 있다.
구체적으로, 상기 내열층은 높은 온도에서 아래와 같은 경화 반응이 일어나는 레졸계 페놀 수지를 포함할 수 있다. 이와 같이, 본원발명은 리튬 이차전지의 온도가 증가하는 경우, 분리막의 최외측에 있는 레졸계 페놀 수지를 포함하는 내열층이 경화됨으로써 분리막이 수축되는 것을 방지할 수 있는 바, 내열성이 향상된 분리막을 제공할 수 있다.
일반적으로, 폴리올레핀계의 고분자 수지를 포함하는 분리막 기재만을 분리막으로 사용하는 경우, 분리막의 내열성이 문제될 뿐 아니라, 분리막의 기계적인 강도도 낮은 문제가 있다. 이와 같은 문제를 보완하기 위하여, 분리막 기재의 일면 또는 양면에 무기물과 바인더를 포함하는 무기물층을 포함할 수 있다.
본원발명은 분리막 기재의 적어도 일측에 내열층이 부가되는 바, 상기 분리막 기재의 제1면과 제2면 중 어느 하나에 무기물층이 형성되고, 상기 무기물층의 상면, 및 상기 무기물층이 형성되지 않은 분리막 기재의 상면에 내열층이 부가될 수 있다. 즉, 분리막 기재의 제1면과 제2면 중 무기물층이 형성되는 면에서는, 분리막 기재와 상기 내열층 사이에 무기물층이 형성될 수 있다.
또는, 상기 분리막 기재의 제1면과 제2면 각각에 제1무기물층과 제2무기물층이 형성될 수 있으며, 상기 제1무기물층과 제2무기물층 각각에 내열층이 부가될 수 있다.
예를 들어, 원통형 이차전지용 전극조립체를 제조하는 경우에는, 원통형 이차전지의 특성상 안전성 확보의 기준이 상대적으로 낮기 때문에, 분리막 기재의 일면에만 무기물층이 형성되는 단면코팅 분리막을 사용함으로써 전지의 용량과 에너지밀도를 증가할 수 있다.
또는, 파우치형 이차전지용 전극조립체를 제조하는 경우에는, 안전성 확보의 기준이 상대적으로 높기 때문에, 분리막 기재의 양면에 무기물층이 형성되는 양면코팅 분리막을 사용하여 내열성 향상 효과를 얻을 수 있다.
상기 무기물층은 무기물 및 바인더를 포함할 수 있으며, 상기 바인더는 무기물 입자 간의 결합을 유지시켜주고, 전극과 분리막 간의 접착력을 향상시켜 줄 수 있다.
이와 같은 바인더의 종류는 분리막 코팅층에 화학적인 변화를 미치지 않는다면, 특별히 한정되지 않으며, 예를 들어, 폴리에틸렌 및 폴리프로필렌 등의 폴리올레핀; 폴리불화비닐리덴 및 폴리테트라플루오로에틸렌 등의 불소 함유 수지; 불화비닐리덴-헥사플루오로프로필렌-테트라플루오로에틸렌 공중합체 및 에틸렌-테트라플루오로에틸렌 공중합체 등의 불소 함유 고무; 스티렌-부타디엔 공중합체 및 그 수소화물; 메타크릴산 에스테르 공중합체, 아크릴로니트릴 아크릴산 에스테르 공중합체 및 스티렌 아크릴산에스테르 공중합체 등의 (메타)아크릴산 에스테르 공중합체; 에틸렌 프로필렌 러버 등의 고무류; 폴리초산비닐; 폴리페닐렌에테르, 폴리설폰, 폴리에테르설폰, 폴리페닐렌 설파이드, 폴리에테르이미드, 폴리아미드, 폴리이미드, 폴리아미드이미드, 폴리에테르아미드, 폴리에스테르, 방향족 폴리에스테르 및 폴리에테르에테르케톤 등의 융점이나 유리 전이 온도가 180℃ 이상의 수지; 폴리카보네이트; 폴리아세탈; 및, 카르복시알킬셀룰로오스, 알킬셀룰로오스, 히드록시알킬셀룰로오스, 전분, 폴리비닐알코올, 알긴산나트륨, 폴리에틸렌글리콜, 셀룰로오스에스테르, 폴리아크릴산, 폴리아크릴아미드 및 폴리메타크릴산 등의 수용성 수지로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 1종 이상일 수 있다.
상기 무기물층을 구성하는 무기물은 BaTiO3, Pb(Zr,Ti)O3(PZT), Pb1-xLaxZr1-yTiyO3(PLZT) (0<x<1, 0<y<1), PB(Mg3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3(PMN-PT), hafnia(HfO2), SrTiO3, SnO2, CeO2, MgO, NiO, CaO, ZnO, ZrO2, Y2O3, Al2O3, TiO2, SiC, 리튬포스페이트(Li3PO4), 리튬티타늄포스페이트(LixTiy(PO4)3, 0<x<2, 0<y<3), (LiAlTiP)xOy 계열 glass (0<x<4, 0<y<13), 리튬게르마늄티오포스페이트(LixGeyPzSw, 0<x<4, 0<y<1, 0<z<1, 0<w<5), 리튬나이트라이드(LixNy, 0<x<4, 0<y<2), SiS2 계열 glass(LixSiySz, 0<x<3, 0<y<2, 0<z<4), P2S5 계열 glass (LixPySz, 0<x<3, 0<y<3, 0<z<7) 및 이들의 혼합체로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 하나 이상일 수 있지만, 이들만으로 한정되는 것은 아니다.
상기 무기물층의 코팅 방법과 상기 내열층의 코팅 방법은 특별히 한정되는 것은 아니며, 당업계에 알려진 통상적인 코팅 방법을 사용할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 딥(Dip) 코팅, 다이(Die) 코팅, 롤(Roll) 코팅, 콤마(Comma) 코팅, 스핀(Spin) 코팅, 스프레이(Spray) 코팅 또는 이들의 혼합 방식 등 다양한 방식을 이용할 수 있다.
상기 내열층에 포함되는 레졸계 페놀 수지는, 상기 내열층의 고형분 전체 함량을 기준으로 0.5 wt% 내지 2.0 wt%로 포함될 수 있고, 상세하게는, 1.0 wt% 내지 2.0 wt%로 포함될 수 있다.
상기 레졸계 페놀 수지의 함량이 내열층의 고형분 전체 함량을 기준으로 0.5 wt% 보다 적은 경우에는 내열성을 향상시키기 위한 효과를 달성하기 어렵고, 2.0 wt% 보다 많은 경우에는 분리막의 저항이 증가하는 문제가 있으므로 바람직하지 않다.
본원발명에 따른 분리막에서 무기물층 또는 분리막 기재 상에 도포되는 내열층은, 로딩량이 너무 큰 경우에는 저항 증가의 원인이 될 수 있는 바, 예를 들어 로딩량이 2.0 g/㎡ 이하로 포함될 수 있고, 상세하게는 1.0 g/㎡ 이하일 수 있으며, 더욱 상세하게는 0.5 g/㎡ 이하일 수 있다.
하나의 구체적인 예에서, 분리막의 최외측에 내열층을 형성하기 위하여, 아세톤과 같은 비수계 유기 용매에 레졸계 페놀을 용해하여 코팅 슬러리를 제조하고, 상기 코팅 슬러리에 분리막을 함침하여 딥 코팅할 수 있다.
상기 분리막은 분리막 기재의 적어도 일면에 무기물층이 형성된 상태인 바, 상기 무기물층의 용매로서 유계 용매를 사용한 유계 분리막을 상기 코팅 슬러리에 함침하면 상기 무기물층이 녹아서 분리될 수 있다.
따라서, 본원발명은 무기물층의 용매로서 물을 사용한 수계 분리막을 사용함으로써, 내열층 형성 과정에서 무기물층이 녹는 것을 방지할 수 있다.
본원발명은 또한, 상기 리튬 이차전지용 분리막을 양극과 음극 사이에 개재한 전극조립체를 포함하는 전지셀을 제공하며, 상기 전지셀은 전극조립체가 리튬염 함유 비수계 전해액에 함침되어 있는 구조로 이루어진 리튬 이차전지일 수 있다.
상기 리튬 이차전지는 전지케이스의 형태에 따라 파우치형 이차전지, 원통형 이차전지 또는 각형 이차전지일 수 있다.
상기 양극은, 예를 들어, 양극 집전체 상에 양극 활물질을 포함하고 있는 양극 합제를 도포한 후 건조하여 제조되며, 상기 양극 합제에는, 필요에 따라, 바인더, 도전재, 충진재 등이 선택적으로 더 포함될 수도 있다.
상기 양극 집전체는 일반적으로 3 ㎛ 내지 500 ㎛의 두께로 만든다. 이러한 양극 집전체는, 당해 전지에 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않으면서 높은 도전성을 가지는 것이라면 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니며, 예를 들어, 스테인리스 스틸, 알루미늄, 니켈, 티탄, 소성 탄소, 또는 알루미늄이나 스테인리스 스틸의 표면에 카본, 니켈, 티탄, 은 등으로 표면 처리한 것 등이 사용될 수 있다. 또한, 양극 집전체는, 표면에 미세한 요철을 형성하여 양극 활물질의 접착력을 높일 수도 있으며, 필름, 시트, 호일, 네트, 다공질체, 발포체, 부직포체 등 다양한 형태가 가능하다.
상기 양극 활물질은 전기화학적 반응을 일으킬 수 있는 물질로서, 리튬 전이금속 산화물로서, 2 이상의 전이금속을 포함하고, 예를 들어, Li1+zNibMncCo1-(b+c+d)MdO(2-e)Ae (여기서, -0.5≤z≤0.5, 0.1≤b≤0.8, 0.1≤c≤0.8, 0≤d≤0.2, 0≤e≤0.2, b+c+d<1 임, M = Al, Mg, Cr, Ti, Si 또는 Y 이고, A = F, P 또는 Cl 임)으로 표현되는 리튬 니켈 코발트 망간 복합산화물; 화학식 Li1+xM1-yM'yPO4-zXz(여기서, M = 전이금속, 바람직하게는 Fe, Mn, Co 또는 Ni 이고, M' = Al, Mg 또는 Ti 이고, X = F, S 또는 N 이며, -0.5≤x≤+0.5, 0≤y≤0.5, 0≤z≤0.1 임)로 표현되는 올리빈계 리튬 금속 포스페이트 등을 들 수 있지만, 이들만으로 한정되는 것은 아니다.
상기 도전재는 통상적으로 양극 활물질을 포함한 혼합물 전체 중량을 기준으로 1 중량% 내지 30 중량%로 첨가된다. 이러한 도전재는 당해 전지에 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않으면서 도전성을 가진 것이라면 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니며, 예를 들어, 천연 흑연이나 인조 흑연 등의 흑연; 아세틸렌 블랙, 케첸 블랙, 채널 블랙, 퍼네이스 블랙, 램프 블랙, 서머 블랙 등의 카본블랙; 탄소 섬유나 금속 섬유 등의 도전성 섬유; 불화 카본, 알루미늄, 니켈 분말 등의 금속 분말; 산화아연, 티탄산 칼륨 등의 도전성 위스키; 산화 티탄 등의 도전성 금속 산화물; 폴리페닐렌 유도체 등의 도전성 소재 또는 탄소나노튜브 등이 사용될 수 있다.
상기 바인더는 활물질과 도전재 등의 결합과 집전체에 대한 결합에 조력하는 성분으로서, 통상적으로 양극 활물질을 포함하는 혼합물 전체 중량을 기준으로 1 중량% 내지 30 중량%로 첨가된다. 이러한 바인더의 예로는, 폴리불화비닐리덴, 폴리비닐알코올, 카르복시메틸셀룰로우즈(CMC), 전분, 히드록시프로필셀룰로우즈, 재생 셀룰로우즈, 폴리비닐피롤리돈, 테트라플루오로에틸렌, 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 에틸렌-프로필렌-디엔 테르 폴리머(EPDM), 술폰화 EPDM, 스티렌 브티렌 고무, 불소 고무, 또는 다양한 공중합제 등을 들 수 있다.
상기 충진제는 전극의 팽창을 억제하는 성분으로서 선택적으로 사용되며, 당해 전지에 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않으면서 섬유상 재료라면 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니며, 예를 들어, 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌 등의 올리핀계 중합제; 유리섬유, 탄소섬유 등의 섬유상 물질이 사용된다.
상기 음극은, 예를 들어, 음극 집전체 상에 음극 활물질을 포함하고 있는 음극 합제를 도포한 후 건조하여 제조되며, 상기 음극 합제에는, 필요에 따라, 앞서 설명한 바와 같은 도전재, 바인더, 충진제 등의 성분들이 포함될 수 있다.
상기 음극 집전체는 일반적으로 3 ㎛ 내지 500 ㎛의 두께로 만든다. 이러한 음극 집전체는, 당해 전지에 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않으면서 높은 도전성을 가지는 것이라면 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니며, 예를 들어, 구리, 스테인리스 스틸, 알루미늄, 니켈, 티탄, 소성 탄소, 구리나 스테인리스 스틸의 표면에 카본, 니켈, 티탄, 은 등으로 표면처리한 것, 알루미늄-카드뮴 합금 등이 사용될 수 있다. 또한, 양극 집전체와 마찬가지로, 표면에 미세한 요철을 형성하여 음극 활물질의 결합력을 강화시킬 수도 있으며, 필름, 시트, 호일, 네트, 다공질체, 발포체, 부직포체 등 다양한 형태로 사용될 수 있다.
상기 음극 활물질은, 예를 들어, 난흑연화 탄소, 흑연계 탄소 등의 탄소; LixFe2O3(0≤x≤1), LixWO2(0≤x≤1), SnxMe1-xMe'yOz (Me: Mn, Fe, Pb, Ge; Me': Al, B, P, Si, 주기율표의 1족, 2족, 3족 원소, 할로겐; 0<x≤1; 1≤y≤3; 1≤z≤8) 등의 금속 복합 산화물; 리튬 금속; 리튬 합금; 규소계 합금; 주석계 합금; SnO, SnO2, PbO, PbO2, Pb2O3, Pb3O4, Sb2O3, Sb2O4, Sb2O5, GeO, GeO2, Bi2O3, Bi2O4, Bi2O5 등의 금속 산화물; 폴리아세틸렌 등의 도전성 고분자; Li-Co-Ni 계 재료 등을 사용할 수 있다.
상기 바인더와 도전재 및 필요에 따라 첨가되는 성분들은 양극에서의 설명과 동일하다.
또한, 점도 조절제, 접착 촉진제 등의 기타의 성분들이 선택적으로 또는 둘 이상의 조합으로서 더 포함될 수 있다.
상기 점도 조절제는 전극 합제의 혼합 공정과 그것의 집전체 상의 도포 공정이 용이할 수 있도록 전극 합제의 점도를 조절하는 성분으로서, 음극 합제 전체 중량을 기준으로 30 중량%까지 첨가될 수 있다. 이러한 점도 조절제의 예로는, 카르복시메틸셀룰로우즈, 폴리비닐리덴플로라이드 등이 있지만, 이들만으로 한정되는 것은 아니다. 경우에 따라서는, 앞서 설명한 용매가 점도 조절제로서의 역할을 병행할 수 있다.
상기 접착 촉진제는 집전체에 대한 활물질의 접착력을 향상시키기 위해 첨가되는 보조성분으로서, 바인더 대비 10 중량% 이하로 첨가될 수 있으며, 예를 들어 옥살산 (oxalic acid), 아디프산(adipic acid), 포름산(formic acid), 아크릴산(acrylic acid) 유도체, 이타콘산(itaconic acid) 유도체 등을 들 수 있다.
상기 분리막은 양극과 음극 사이에 개재되며, 높은 이온 투과도와 기계적 강도를 가지는 절연성의 얇은 박막이 사용된다. 분리막의 기공 직경은 일반적으로 0.01 ㎛ ~ 10 ㎛이고, 두께는 일반적으로 5 ㎛ ~ 300 ㎛이다. 이러한 분리막으로는, 예를 들어, 내화학성 및 소수성의 폴리프로필렌 등의 올레핀계 폴리머; 유리섬유 또는 폴리에틸렌 등으로 만들어진 시트나 부직포 등이 사용된다. 전해질로서 폴리머 등의 고체 전해질이 사용되는 경우에는 고체 전해질이 분리막을 겸할 수도 있다.
상기 리튬염 함유 비수계 전해액은 전해액과 리튬염으로 이루어져 있으며, 상기 전해액으로는 비수계 유기용매, 유기 고체 전해질, 무기 고체 전해질 등이 사용된다.
상기 비수계 유기용매로는, 예를 들어, N-메틸-2-피롤리디논, 프로필렌 카르보네이트, 에틸렌 카르보네이트, 부틸렌 카르보네이트, 디메틸 카르보네이트, 디에틸 카르보네이트, 감마-부틸로 락톤, 1,2-디메톡시 에탄, 테트라히드록시 프랑(franc), 2-메틸 테트라하이드로푸란, 디메틸술폭시드, 1,3-디옥소런, 포름아미드, 디메틸포름아미드, 디옥소런, 아세토니트릴, 니트로메탄, 포름산 메틸, 초산메틸, 인산 트리에스테르, 트리메톡시 메탄, 디옥소런 유도체, 설포란, 메틸 설포란, 1,3-디메틸-2-이미다졸리디논, 프로필렌 카르보네이트 유도체, 테트라하이드로푸란 유도체, 에테르, 피로피온산 메틸, 프로피온산 에틸 등의 비양자성 유기용매가 사용될 수 있다.
상기 유기 고체 전해질로는, 예를 들어, 폴리에틸렌 유도체, 폴리에틸렌 옥사이드 유도체, 폴리프로필렌 옥사이드 유도체, 인산 에스테르 폴리머, 폴리 에지테이션 리신(agitation lysine), 폴리에스테르 술파이드, 폴리비닐 알코올, 폴리 불화 비닐리덴, 이온성 해리기를 포함하는 중합제 등이 사용될 수 있다.
상기 무기 고체 전해질로는, 예를 들어, Li3N, LiI, Li5NI2, Li3N-LiI-LiOH, LiSiO4, LiSiO4-LiI-LiOH, Li2SiS3, Li4SiO4, Li4SiO4-LiI-LiOH, Li3PO4-Li2S-SiS2 등의 Li의 질화물, 할로겐화물, 황산염 등이 사용될 수 있다.
상기 리튬염은 상기 비수계 전해액에 용해되기 좋은 물질로서, 예를 들어, LiCl, LiBr, LiI, LiClO4, LiBF4, LiB10Cl10, LiPF6, LiCF3SO3, LiCF3CO2, LiAsF6, LiSbF6, LiAlCl4, CH3SO3Li, (CF3SO2)2NLi, 클로로 보란 리튬, 저급 지방족 카르본산 리튬, 페닐 붕산 리튬, 이미드 등이 사용될 수 있다.
또한, 전해액에는 충방전 특성, 난연성 등의 개선을 목적으로, 예를 들어, 피리딘, 트리에틸포스파이트, 트리에탄올아민, 환상 에테르, 에틸렌 디아민, n-글라임(glyme), 헥사 인산 트리 아미드, 니트로벤젠 유도체, 유황, 퀴논 이민 염료, N-치환 옥사졸리디논, N,N-치환 이미다졸리딘, 에틸렌 글리콜 디알킬 에테르, 암모늄염, 피롤, 2-메톡시 에탄올, 삼염화 알루미늄 등이 첨가될 수도 있다. 경우에 따라서는, 불연성을 부여하기 위하여, 사염화탄소, 삼불화에틸렌 등의 할로겐 함유 용매를 더 포함시킬 수도 있고, 고온 보존 특성을 향상시키기 위하여 이산화탄산 가스를 더 포함시킬 수도 있으며, FEC(Fluoro-Ethylene Carbonate), PRS(Propene sultone) 등을 더 포함시킬 수 있다.
하나의 바람직한 예에서, LiPF6, LiClO4, LiBF4, LiN(SO2CF3)2 등의 리튬염을, 고유전성 용매인 에틸렌카보네이트(erhylenecarbonate, EC) 또는 프로필렌카보네이트(propylenecarbonate, PC)의 환형 카보네이트와 저점도 용매인 디에틸카보네이트(diethylcarbonate, DEC), 디메틸카보네이트(dimethylcarbonate, DMC) 또는 에틸메틸카보네이트(ethylmethylcarbonate, EMC)의 선형 카보네이트의 혼합 용매에 첨가하여 리튬염 함유 비수계 전해액을 제조할 수 있다.
본원발명은 또한, 상기 이차전지를 단위셀로 포함하는 전지팩을 제공하고, 상기 전지팩을 포함하는 디바이스를 제공한다.
상기 디바이스의 구체적인 예로는, 컴퓨터, 휴대폰, 파워 툴(power tool) 등의 소형 디바이스와, 전지적 모터에 의해 동력을 받아 움직이는 파워 툴(power tool); 전기자동차(Electric Vehicle, EV), 하이브리드 전기자동차(Hybrid Electric Vehicle, HEV), 플러그-인 하이브리드 전기자동차(Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle, PHEV) 등을 포함하는 전기차; 전기 자전거(E-bike), 전기 스쿠터(E-scooter)를 포함하는 전기 이륜차; 전기 골프 카트(electric golf cart); 전력저장장치, 전력저장용 시스템 등의 중대형 디바이스를 들 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
상기 전지팩과 디바이스의 구조 등은 당업계에 공지되어 있으므로, 본 명세서에서는 그에 대한 자세한 설명을 생략한다.
이하에서는, 본원 발명의 실시예를 참조하여 설명하지만, 이는 본원 발명의 더욱 용이한 이해를 위한 것으로, 본원 발명의 범주가 그것에 의해 한정되는 것은 아니다.
<실시예 1>
폴리올레핀계 고분자 재료를 포함하는 다공성의 분리막 기재를 준비하고, 무기물 입자로서 Al2O3와 아크릴계 바인더 수지를 99 : 1의 중량비로 물에 용해하여 제조된 무기물 슬러리를 상기 다공성의 분리막 기재의 일측면에 1.5 ㎛의 두께로 코팅하여, 편면 코팅 수계 분리막을 제조하였다. 상기 편면 코팅 수계 분리막의 두께는 12 ㎛이다.
내열층 형성을 위하여, 고형분을 기준으로 레졸계 페놀이 0.5 wt% 포함되는 코팅 슬러리를 준비한다. 상기 편면 코팅 수계 분리막을 상기 코팅 슬러리에 딥 코팅하여 전체 두께가 12.1 ㎛이고, 내열층의 로딩량이 0.47 g/㎡인 분리막을 제조하였다.
<실시예 2>
상기 실시예 1에서 고형분을 기준으로 레졸계 페놀이 1.0 wt% 포함되는 것을 제외하고, 상기 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 전체 두께가 12.1 ㎛이고 내열층의 로딩량이 0.95 g/㎡인 분리막을 제조하였다.
<실시예 3>
상기 실시예 1에서 고형분을 기준으로 레졸계 페놀이 2.0 wt% 포함되는 것을 제외하고, 상기 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 전체 두께가 12.1 ㎛이고 내열층의 로딩량이 1.79 g/㎡인 분리막을 제조하였다.
<비교예 1>
상기 실시예 1에서 내열층을 형성하지 않은 것을 제외하고, 상기 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 전체 두께가 12.0 ㎛인 분리막을 제조하였다.
<비교예 2>
상기 실시예 1에서 고형분을 기준으로 레졸계 페놀이 2.5 wt% 포함되는 것을 제외하고, 상기 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 전체 두께가 12.1 ㎛이고 내열층의 로딩량이 2.2 g/㎡인 분리막을 제조하였다.
<저항 측정 실험>
2016 사이즈의 코인셀을 제조하기 위하여, 상기 비교예 1, 비교예 2 및 실시예 1 내지 실시예 3에서 제조된 분리막을 19 ㆈ로 타발하고 전해액을 1방울 넣어 코인셀을 제작하였다.
상기 코인셀을 3시간 동안 방치한 후 EIS(Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy) 장치를 이용하여 코인셀의 저항을 측정하였다.
상기 EIS 장치는 Solartron 社의 1255B 모델을 사용하여, 104 내지 105 Hz의 주파수를 인가하였고, 측정된 그래프의 X 절편 값을 기록하여 얻은 값을 하기 표 1에 기재하였다.
상기 전해액은 에틸렌카보네이트(EC) : 디메틸카보네이트(DMC) : 에틸메틸카보네이트(EMC)가 3 : 4 : 3의 비율로 혼합된 것으로, 첨가제로서 비닐렌카보네이트(VC) 3 mol, 프로판설톤(PS) 1.5 mol, 에틸렌설페이트(ESa) 1 mol 및 리튬염 LiPF6 1mol을 포함한다.
<열수축률 측정 실험>
상기 실시예 1 내지 실시예 3과 비교예 1, 비교예 2에서 제조된 분리막을 150 ℃의 온도 조건하에서 30분 동안 방치한 후, 분리막의 수축율을 측정하였다.
상기 수축율은 분리막의 MD 방향 및 TD 방향에서 각각 임의의 두 점을 표시하고 이들 간의 거리(표점 거리)의 증감율을 아래 (식 1)에 따라 계산한 결과이다.
(식 1) 수축율(%) = {(B-A)/A} X 100
상기 식에서 A는 고온 방치 전 초기 상태의 표점 거리이고, B는 고온 방치 후 최종 상태의 표점 거리이다.
통기도 측정 결과와 열수축율 측정 결과를 하기 표 1에 기재하였다.

상기 표 1을 참조하면, 내열층이 형성되지 않은 비교예 1과 내열층이 형성된 실시예들의 분리막의 저항을 비교하면, 실시예들의 분리막의 저항은 비교예 1 분리막의 저항과 큰 차이가 나지 않는 것을 알 수 있으며, 특히 실시예 1 및 실시예 2의 경우에는 유사한 수준으로 나타나는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
레졸계 페놀이 2.5 wt% 포함되는 비교예 2의 분리막은 저항이 너무 높아지기 때문에, 이온전도도가 저하되어 전지셀에서 정상적인 기능을 나타내기 어려울 것으로 보인다.
열수축율을 검토하면, 실시예 1 내지 실시예 3의 분리막은 150℃에서의 MD 방향 및 TD 방향 열수축율이 60% 이하로 측정되었고, 특히 실시예 2는 50% 이하이며 실시예 3은 10% 이하로 측정되었다. 따라서, 내열층에서 레졸계 페놀 수지 함량이 증가할수록 열수축율이 향상되는 효과가 있음을 알 수 있으며, 본원발명의 분리막을 사용하여 제조된 전지셀은 고온에서 분리막의 수축을 방지하여 단락 방지 효과가 현저히 향상될 것을 예측할 수 있다.
비교예 2와 같이, 레졸계 페놀 수지 함량이 2.5 wt% 포함되는 경우에는, MD 방향 열수축율은 2%이고, TD 방향 열수축율은 0%인 바, 내열성이 매우 우수하나, 저항이 높기 때문에 전지셀의 성능을 정상적으로 발휘하기 어려울 수 있다.
도 2는 실시예 1에서 제조된 분리막 표면의 FE-SEM 사진이고, 도 3은 실시예 2에서 제조된 분리막 표면의 FE-SEM 사진이고, 도 4는 실시예 3에서 제조된 분리막 표면의 FE-SEM 사진이며, 도 5는 비교예 1에서 제조된 분리막 표면의 FE-SEM 사진이다.
도 2 내지 도 5를 참조하면, 내열층에서 레졸계 페놀 함량이 증가할수록 상면(Top)에서는 무기물층이 내열층에 의해 코팅되는 면적이 증가하고 있으며, 하면(Back)에서는 폴리올레핀계 분리막 기재의 표면에 내열층이 코팅되는 면적이 증가하고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 다만, 도 5에 도시된 비교예 1의 분리막은 내열층이 코팅되지 않은 상태인 바, 무기물 입자들과 폴리올레핀계 분리막 기재를 볼 수 있다.
도 4는 분리막의 상면과 하면의 거의 전체 부분이 내열층으로 코팅된 상태를 도시하고 있는 바, 비교예 2와 같이 레졸계 페놀의 함량이 더 높은 경우에는, 상기 표 1에 기재된 측정값과 같이 저항이 너무 높아져서 전지의 성능이 저하될 수 있다.
따라서, 내열층에 포함된 레졸계 페놀 함량이 2 wt% 보다 적게 포함되고, 선택적으로 로딩량이 2.0 g/㎡ 보다 낮은 경우에는 이온 전도도를 확보하여 낮은 저항을 갖고 내열 특성이 향상된 분리막을 제공할 수 있다.
<DMA(Dynamic Mechanical Analysis) 평가 실험>
상기 비교예 1과 실시예 1 내지 실시예 3에서 제조된 분리막의 고온 특성을 평가하기 위하여, 온도 변화에 따른 응력을 측정하였고, 도 6은 DMA 평가 그래프를 도시하고 있다.
DMA 평가 실험은 TA社의 DMA850모델을 사용하여 진행되었다.
분리막을 폭 0.5 ㎜, 길이 약 5 ㎝로 재단하여 로드셀에 연결하였다. DMA 장비를 isostrain mode 하에서 preload를 0.01 mN으로 인가하고, 온도를 25 ℃에서 200 ℃까지 10 ℃/min 속도로 승온시켰다. 이 때 분리막 시료의 strain 변화율을 측정하였다.
도 6을 참조하면, 비교예 1의 분리막은 약 220 ℃에서 파단된 반면, 내열층을 포함하는 실시예 1 내지 실시예 3에서 제조된 분리막은 250 ℃ 이상의 온도까지 파단이 지연되는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
따라서, 본원발명에 따른 분리막을 사용하는 경우에는, 내열성이 현저히 향상되는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
본원 발명이 속한 분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자라면 상기 내용을 바탕으로 본원 발명의 범주내에서 다양한 응용 및 변형을 수행하는 것이 가능할 것이다.
Claims (10)
- 다공성의 고분자 수지로 이루어진 분리막 기재, 및상기 분리막 기재의 적어도 일측에 부가되며, 가열시 경화반응이 일어나는 페놀 수지가 포함된 내열층;을 포함하는 리튬 이차전지용 분리막.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 분리막 기재와 상기 내열층 사이에는 무기물층이 형성되어 있는 리튬 이차전지용 분리막.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 내열층은 레졸(resol)계 페놀 수지를 포함하는 리튬 이차전지용 분리막.
- 제3항에 있어서, 상기 내열층에서 상기 레졸계 페놀 수지는 고형분 전체 함량을 기준으로 0.5 wt% 내지 2.0 wt%로 포함되는 리튬 이차전지용 분리막.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 리튬 이차전지용 분리막은 150 ℃에서 MD방향과 TD방향 열수축률이 60% 이하인 리튬 이차전지용 분리막.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 내열층의 로딩량은 2.0 g/㎡ 이하인 리튬 이차전지용 분리막.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 분리막 기재의 제1면과 제2면 중 어느 하나에 무기물층이 형성되고,상기 무기물층의 상면, 및 상기 무기물층이 형성되지 않은 분리막 기재의 상면에 내열층이 부가되는 리튬 이차전지용 분리막.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 분리막은 수계 분리막인 리튬 이차전지용 분리막.
- 제1항 내지 제8항 중 어느 한 항에 따른 리튬 이차전지용 분리막을 포함하는 전극조립체가 원통형 전지케이스에 수용된 원통형 리튬 이차전지.
- 제9항에 따른 원통형 리튬 이차전지를 단위셀로 포함하는 전지팩으로서,상기 전지팩은 전기자동차, 하이브리드 전기자동차, 플러그-인 하이브리드 전기자동차 또는 전력저장장치의 에너지원으로 사용되는 전지팩.
