Abstract
본 발명은 제1 흑연 및 상기 제1 흑연의 표면에 위치하는 비정질 탄소층을 포함하는 제1 음극 활물질, 및 제2 흑연을 포함하고 상기 제2 흑연의 표면에 탄소층을 포함하지 않는 제2 음극 활물질을 포함하는 음극 활물질층을 포함하고, 상기 제1 음극 활물질과 제2 음극 활물질의 중량비는 4:6 내지 6:4이고, 상기 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적이 1.1 m2/g 내지 1.7 m2/g인 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 음극 및 이를 구비한 리튬 이차전지에 관한 것이다. 본 발명에 따른 리튬 이차전지용 음극을 구비하는 리튬 이차전지는 급속 충전이 가능하고, 고온 특성 및 안전성이 개선될 수 있다.
Description
본 출원은 2021년 3월 16일에 출원된 10-2021-0034291호에 기초한 우선권을 주장한다.
본 발명은 리튬 이차전지용 음극 및 이를 구비하는 리튬 이차전지에 관한 것이다. 보다 상세하게는, 급속 충방전이 가능한 음극 및 이를 구비하는 리튬 이차전지에 관한 것이다.
최근 에너지 저장 기술에 대한 관심이 갈수록 높아지고 있다. 휴대폰, 캠코더 및 노트북 PC, 나아가서는 전기 자동차의 에너지까지 적용 분야가 확대되면서, 이러한 전자 기기의 전원으로 사용되는 전지의 고에너지 밀도화에 대한 요구가 높아지고 있다. 리튬 이차전지는 이러한 요구를 가장 잘 충족시킬 수 있는 전지로서, 현재 이에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다.
이러한 리튬 이차전지는 일반적으로 리튬 금속 산화물로 된 양극, 탄소재 등으로 된 음극, 리튬염 및 유기 용매를 포함하는 전해액, 양극과 음극 사이에 개재되어 이들을 전기적으로 절연시키는 분리막을 포함하고 있다.
일반적으로 리튬 이차전지용 음극은 음극 활물질, 도전재, 및 바인더를 혼합하여 슬러리를 제조하고, 이를 집전체에 코팅한 후, 건조 및 압연하는 단계를 통하여 제조되는데, 음극 활물질로서는 가역적인 리튬이온의 삽입(intercalation) 및 탈리가 가능하고, 구조적 및 전기적 성질을 유지하는 탄소계 활물질의 사용이 대두되고 있다. 이러한 탄소계 활물질로는 인조 흑연, 천연 흑연 및 하드 카본을 포함한 다양한 형태의 탄소계 재료가 적용되어 왔으며, 이 중에서도 뛰어난 가역성으로 리튬 이차전지의 수명 특성을 보장할 수 있는 흑연계 활물질이 가장 널리 사용되고 있다.
한편, 리튬 이차전지의 성능 향상을 위해서 급속 충방전이 가능한 리튬 이차전지를 제조하려는 시도가 꾸준히 이루어지고 있다. 리튬 이차전지의 급속 충방전 성능은 주로 음극에 의해 결정되는데, 이를 위하여 표면이 탄소로 코팅된 흑연이 음극 활물질로서 널리 사용되고 있다.
그런데, 표면이 탄소로 코팅된 흑연은 표면 경도가 높아 음극 제조 시 압연 과정에서 입자가 깨지는 현상이 발생하고, 입자가 깨지면서 증가한 비표면적으로 인해 고온에서 음극의 표면 반응성이 높아져 부반응이 야기되는 문제가 있었다. 또한, 이러한 음극 활물질을 포함하는 음극을 구비한 리튬 이차전지는 고온에서 급격한 성능 열화를 보이며, 발화율이 높아 안전성의 문제가 있었다.
따라서 본 발명이 해결하고자 하는 과제는, 고온 특성 및 안전성이 개선된 급속 충방전용 음극을 제공하는 것이다.
본 발명이 해결하고자 하는 다른 과제는, 이러한 음극을 포함하여 급속 충방전이 가능하고, 고온 특성 및 안전성이 개선된 리튬 이차전지를 제공하는 것이다.
상기 과제를 해결하기 위하여, 본 발명의 일 측면에 따르면, 하기 구현예들의 리튬 이차전지용 음극이 제공된다.
제1 구현예는,
음극 집전체; 및
상기 음극 집전체의 적어도 일면에 위치하며, 제1 흑연 및 상기 제1 흑연의 표면에 위치하는 비정질 탄소층을 포함하는 제1 음극 활물질, 제2 흑연을 포함하고 상기 제2 흑연의 표면에 탄소층을 포함하지 않는 제2 음극 활물질, 도전재, 및 바인더를 포함하는 음극 활물질층을 포함하고,
상기 제1 음극 활물질과 제2 음극 활물질의 중량비는 4:6 내지 6:4이고,
상기 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적이 1.1 m2/g 내지 1.7 m2/g인 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 음극에 관한 것이다.
제2 구현예는, 제1 구현예에 있어서,
상기 음극 활물질층의 전체 기공 체적이 0.010 cm3/g 내지 0.017 cm3/g일 수 있다.
제3 구현예는, 제1 구현예 또는 제2 구현예에 있어서,
상기 제1 흑연은 천연흑연, 인조흑연, 흑연화 탄소 섬유, 흑연화 메조 카본마이크로비드, 또는 이들 중 2 이상을 포함할 수 있다.
제4 구현예는, 제1 구현예 내지 제3 구현예 중 어느 한 구현예에 있어서,

본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 리튬 이차전지용 음극은 제1 흑연 및 상기 제1 흑연의 표면에 위치하는 비정질 탄소층을 포함하는 제1 음극 활물질 및 제2 흑연을 포함하고 상기 제2 흑연의 표면에 탄소층을 포함하지 않는 제2 음극 활물질을 함께 음극 활물질층에 포함함으로써 급속 충방전이 가능하면서도 음극 제조 시 압연 과정에서 음극 활물질의 표면이 깨져 음극 활물질층 전체의 비표면적이 증가하는 현상이 개선될 수 있다.
구체적으로, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 리튬 이차전지용 음극은 제1 흑연 및 상기 제1 흑연의 표면에 위치하는 비정질 탄소층을 포함하는 제1 음극 활물질 및 제2 흑연을 포함하고 상기 제2 흑연의 표면에 탄소층을 포함하지 않는 제2 음극 활물질을 소정 범위의 중량비로 포함하여 표면에서의 계면 저항이 개선되어 급속 충방전이 용이하다. 또한, 음극 제조 시의 압연 공정에 의해 음극 활물질 입자의 표면이 깨져 음극 활물질의 비표면적이 증가하는 현상이 최소화될 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 리튬 이차전지용 음극은 음극 활물질층 전체의 BET 비표면적이 소정 범위의 값을 가짐에 따라 고온에서 음극의 표면 반응성이 개선되어 고온 특성 및 안전성이 개선될 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 리튬 이차전지는 이러한 리튬 이차전지용 음극을 구비함으로써 급속 충방전이 가능하고 고온 특성 및 안전성이 개선될 수 있다.
본 명세서에 첨부되는 다음의 도면들은 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예를 예시하는 것이며, 전술한 발명의 내용과 함께 본 발명의 기술사상을 더욱 이해시키는 역할을 하는 것이므로, 본 발명은 그러한 도면에 기재된 사항에만 한정되어 해석되어서는 아니 된다.
도 1은, 고온(45℃)에서 1.5C 속도로 4.45V까지 정전류(CC)조건으로 충전하고, 이후 정전압(CV) 조건으로 충전 전류 0.005C(cut-off current)까지 충전하고, 1C 속도로 3V까지 정전류 조건으로 방전하는 것을 1 사이클로 하였을 때의 실시예 1 내지 2 및 비교예 1 내지 3에서 제조한 리튬 이차전지의 용량 유지율을 나타낸 도이다.
이하, 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예를 상세히 설명하기로 한다. 이에 앞서, 본 명세서 및 청구범위에 사용된 용어나 단어는 통상적이거나 사전적인 의미로 한정해서 해석되어서는 아니되며, 발명자는 그 자신의 발명을 가장 최선의 방법으로 설명하기 위해 용어의 개념을 적절하게 정의할 수 있다는 원칙에 입각하여 본 발명의 기술적 사상에 부합하는 의미와 개념으로 해석되어야만 한다.
따라서, 본 명세서의 실시예에 기재된 구성은 본 발명의 가장 바람직한 일 실시예에 불과할 뿐이고 본 발명의 기술적 사상을 모두 대변하는 것은 아니므로, 본 출원시점에 있어서 이들을 대체할 수 있는 다양한 균등물과 변형예들이 있을 수 있음을 이해하여야 한다.
본 발명의 일 측면에 따른 리튬 이차전지용 음극은,
음극 집전체; 및
상기 음극 집전체의 적어도 일면에 위치하며, 제1 흑연 및 상기 제1 흑연의 표면에 위치하는 비정질 탄소층을 포함하는 제1 음극 활물질, 제2 흑연을 포함하고 상기 제2 흑연의 표면에 탄소층을 포함하지 않는 제2 음극 활물질, 도전재, 및 바인더를 포함하는 음극 활물질층을 포함하고,
상기 제1 음극 활물질과 제2 음극 활물질의 중량비는 4:6 내지 6:4이고,
상기 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적이 1.1 m2/g 내지 1.7 m2/g인 것을 특징으로 한다.
상기 음극 집전체는, 전지에 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않으면서 높은 도전성을 가지는 것이라면 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니며, 예를 들어, 구리, 스테인리스 스틸, 알루미늄, 니켈, 티탄, 소성 탄소; 구리나 스테인리스 스틸의 표면에 카본, 니켈, 티탄, 은 등으로 표면 처리한 것; 알루미늄-카드뮴 합금 등이 사용될 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 음극 집전체는 3 ㎛ 내지 500 ㎛의 두께를 가질 수 있다.
상기 제1 음극 활물질은 제1 흑연 및 상기 제1 흑연의 표면에 위치하는 비정질 탄소층을 포함한다. 상기 제1 음극 활물질은 제1 흑연 입자 코어, 및 상기 코어의 표면에 위치한 비정질 탄소층의 쉘을 포함하는 코어-쉘 구조일 수 있다. 상기 제1 음극 활물질은 상기 제1 흑연의 표면에 형성된 비정질 탄소층으로 인하여 입자 표면에서의 리튬 이온의 입/출입이 용이하게 되고, 리튬 이온의 확산 저항을 낮출 수 있다. 본 발명의 일 실시양태에 따른 리튬 이차전지용 음극은 제1 흑연 및 상기 제1 흑연의 표면에 위치하는 비정질 탄소층을 포함하는 제1 음극 활물질을 포함하여, 리튬 이온의 확산 저항이 감소될 수 있어 급속 충방전이 용이하다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 제1 흑연은 천연흑연, 인조흑연, 흑연화 탄소 섬유, 흑연화 메조 카본마이크로비드, 또는 이들 중 2 이상을 포함할 수 있다.
상기 천연흑연은 자연에서 생성되어 채굴되는 흑연을 의미하고, 상기 인조흑연은 석탄계 및 석유계 피치 등을 2500℃ 이상으로 탄화시켜 제조되는 흑연을 의미한다. 상기 인조흑연은 당해 기술분야에서 제조되는 인조흑연이라면 제한없이 사용될 수 있으며, 비제한적인 실시예로 MCMB(mesophase carbon microbeads), 모자이크 코르크(mosaic cokes)를 2800 내지 3000℃에서 소성한 것일 수 있다. 본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 제1 흑연은 인조흑연을 포함할 수 있다. 상기 제1 흑연이 인조흑연을 포함하는 경우, 천연흑연과 비교하여 입자 표면에 결정면의 모서리(edge)가 적게 노출되어 있어, 상대적으로 낮은 비표면적을 가지며, 이에 따라 표면 부반응이 감소되기 더욱 용이할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 제1 흑연의 평균 입경은 3 ㎛ 내지 25 ㎛, 또는 5 ㎛ 내지 25 ㎛일 수 있다. 상기 제1 흑연의 평균 입경이 전술한 범위를 만족하는 경우, 제1 흑연의 비표면적이 증가하여 전지의 초기 효율이 감소하는 문제를 방지하기 용이할 수 있다. 또한, 집전체와의 접착력이 감소하는 문제와 충진 밀도가 낮아져 전지의 용량이 저하되는 문제를 방지하기 용이할 수 있다.
본 명세서 전체에서, 평균 입경이란 D50 입경을 의미하며, "D50 입경"은, 입경에 따른 입자 개수 누적 분포의 50% 지점에서의 입경을 의미한다. 상기 입경은 레이저 회절법(laser diffraction method)을 이용하여 측정할 수 있다. 구체적으로, 측정 대상 분말을 분산매 중에 분산시킨 후, 시판되는 레이저 회절 입도 측정 장치(예를 들어 Microtrac S3500)에 도입하여 입자들이 레이저빔을 통과할 때 입자 크기에 따른 회절패턴 차이를 측정하여 입도 분포를 산출한다. 측정 장치에 있어서의 입경에 따른 입자 개수 누적 분포의 50%가 되는 지점에서의 입자 직경을 산출함으로써, D50 입경을 측정할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 비정질 탄소층은 글루코스, 프락토스, 갈락토오스, 말토오스, 락토오스, 수크로스, 페놀계 수지, 나프탈렌 수지, 폴리비닐알콜 수지, 우레탄 수지, 폴리이미드 수지, 석탄계 피치, 석유계 피치, 저분자 중질유, 또는 이들 중 2 이상을 포함할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 비정질 탄소층은 상기 제1 음극 활물질 전체 100 중량%을 기준으로 1 중량% 내지 20 중량%, 또는 1 중량% 내지 10 중량%, 또는 1 중량% 내지 3 중량%, 또는 3 중량% 내지 10 중량%으로 포함될 수 있다. 상기 비정질 탄소층의 함량이 전술한 범위를 만족하는 경우, 리튬 이온의 확산 저항을 감소시킬 수 있으면서 음극 활물질의 용량 역시 확보하기 더욱 용이할 수 있다.
상기 비정질 탄소층의 함량은 예컨대, 제1 음극 활물질을 산소 분위기에서 1000℃에서 열처리하여 이 때 감소하는 중량의 비율을 측정하여 계산할 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 비정질 탄소층의 두께는 1 nm 내지 1000 nm, 또는 5 nm 내지 800 nm, 또는 5 nm 내지 500 nm, 또는 500 nm 내지 800 nm일 수 있다. 상기 비정질 탄소층의 두께가 전술한 범위를 만족하는 경우, SEI(solid electrolyte interphase) 층이 안정적으로 형성되기 용이할 수 있다. 또한, 리튬 이온의 이동성이 확보되어 급속 충방전 특성을 확보하기 용이할 수 있다.
상기 비정질 탄소층의 두께는 예컨대, 투과전자현미경(TEM; Transmission Electron Microscope) 등을 이용하여 측정할 수 있으나, 이로 한정되는 것은 아니다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 제1 음극 활물질의 평균 입경은 5 ㎛ 내지 30 ㎛, 또는 5 ㎛ 내지 20 ㎛, 또는 9 ㎛ 내지 17 ㎛, 또는 9 ㎛ 내지 15 ㎛, 또는 15 ㎛ 내지 17 ㎛일 수 있다. 상기 제1 음극 활물질이 전술한 범위의 평균 입경을 만족하는 경우, 제1 음극 활물질의 비표면적이 증가하여 전지의 초기 효율이 감소하는 문제를 방지하기 용이할 수 있다. 또한, 집전체와의 접착력이 감소하는 문제와 충진 밀도가 낮아져 전지의 용량이 저하되는 문제를 방지하기 용이할 수 있다. 상기 제1 음극 활물질이 전술한 범위의 평균 입경을 만족하는 경우, 음극 활물질층 전체의 BET 비표면적이 1.1 m2/g 내지 1.7 m2/g이기 더욱 용이할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 제1 음극 활물질은 0.5 m2/g 내지 2 m2/g, 또는 0.7 m2/g 내지 1.5 m2/g, 또는 0.7 m2/g 내지 0.9 m2/g, 또는 0.9 m2/g 내지 1.5 m2/g의 BET 비표면적 값을 가질 수 있다. 상기 제1 음극 활물질이 전술한 범위의 BET 비표면적 값을 가지는 경우, 충방전 과정에서 출력 특성이 저하되거나, 초기 효율이 저하되고 표면에서의 부반응이 증가하는 문제를 방지하기 용이할 수 있다. 상기 제1 음극 활물질이 전술한 범위의 BET 비표면적을 만족하는 경우, 음극 활물질층 전체의 BET 비표면적이 1.1 m2/g 내지 1.7 m2/g이기 더욱 용이할 수 있다.
상기 BET 비표면적은 BET(Brunauer-Emmett-Teller; BET)법으로 측정할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 하기의 방법으로 측정될 수 있다. 상기 제1 음극 활물질을 표준 샘플 셀(standard sample cell, 초자)에 채워 넣고 130℃ 진공 조건에서 2시간 건조시킨다. 77 K의 액체 질소 통속에서 측정되도록 액체 질소를 채워 넣는다. Standard sample cell의 열을 식힌 후 액체 질소 조건에서 측정되도록 Standard sample cell을 측정 장비 BEL Japan 사 BELSORP-mino II에 고정시킨다. 측정 프로그램을 작동시켜 질소 가스 환경에서 샘플링된 제1 음극 활물질 표면에 흡탈착되는 과정을 통해 BET 비표면적을 측정한다.
상기 제2 음극 활물질은 제2 흑연을 포함하고 상기 제2 흑연의 표면에 탄소층을 포함하지 않는다. 상기 제2 음극 활물질은 표면에 탄소층을 포함하지 않아 표면 경도가 낮아 음극 제조 시의 압연 공정에서 입자가 깨지는 현상이 최소화될 수 있다. 이에 따라, 본 발명의 일 실시양태에 따른 리튬 이차전지용 음극은 상기 제1 음극 활물질 외에 상기 제2 음극 활물질을 포함함으로써 급속 충방전이 용이하면서 동시에 음극 활물질의 표면이 깨져 비표면적이 증가하는 현상이 개선될 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 제2 흑연은 천연흑연, 인조흑연, 흑연화 탄소 섬유, 흑연화 메조 카본마이크로비드, 또는 이들 중 2 이상을 포함할 수 있다. 본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 제2 흑연은 인조흑연을 포함할 수 있다. 상기 제2 흑연이 인조흑연을 포함하는 경우, 천연흑연과 비교하여 입자 표면에 결정면의 모서리(edge)가 적게 노출되어 있어, 상대적으로 낮은 비표면적을 가지며, 이에 따라 표면 부반응이 감소되기 보다 용이할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 제2 음극 활물질의 평균 입경은 13 ㎛ 내지 25 ㎛, 또는 14 ㎛ 내지 18 ㎛일 수 있다. 상기 제2 음극 활물질이 전술한 범위의 평균 입경을 만족하는 경우, 제2 음극 활물질의 비표면적이 증가하여 전지의 초기 효율이 감소하는 문제를 방지하기 용이할 수 있다. 또한, 집전체와의 접착력이 감소하는 문제와 충진 밀도가 낮아져 전지의 용량이 저하되는 문제를 방지하기 용이할 수 있다. 상기 제2 음극 활물질이 전술한 범위의 평균 입경을 만족하는 경우, 음극 활물질층 전체의 BET 비표면적이 1.1 m2/g 내지 1.7 m2/g이기 더욱 용이할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 제2 음극 활물질은 0.5 m2/g 내지 2 m2/g, 또는 0.9 m2/g 내지 1.8 m2/g, 또는 0.9 m2/g 내지 1.3 m2/g, 또는 1.3 m2/g 내지 1.8 m2/g의 BET 비표면적 값을 가질 수 있다. 상기 제2 음극 활물질이 전술한 범위의 BET 비표면적 값을 가지는 경우, 충방전 과정에서 출력 특성이 저하되거나, 초기 효율이 저하되고 표면에서의 부반응이 증가하는 문제를 방지하기 용이할 수 있다. 상기 제2 음극 활물질이 전술한 범위의 BET 비표면적을 만족하는 경우, 음극 활물질층 전체의 BET 비표면적이 1.1 m2/g 내지 1.7 m2/g이기 더욱 용이할 수 있다.

본 발명에서, 상기 제1 음극 활물질과 상기 제2 음극 활물질의 중량비는 4:6 내지 6:4이다. 상기 제1 음극 활물질과 상기 제2 음극 활물질의 중량비가 전술한 범위를 만족하는 경우, 전기 전도도가 향상되고 표면에서의 계면 저항이 개선되어 급속 충방전이 용이하다. 또한, 동시에 음극 제조 시의 압연 공정에 의해 음극 활물질 입자의 표면이 깨져 음극 활물질의 비표면적이 증가하는 현상이 최소화될 수 있다.
상기 제1 음극 활물질과 상기 제2 음극 활물질의 중량비가 4:6 미만인 경우, 음극 활물질층 전체 표면에서의 계면 저항이 증가하여 리튬 이온이 음극 활물질 내로 삽입되는 것이 용이하지 않아 급속 충방전이 용이하지 않다.
상기 제1 음극 활물질과 상기 제2 음극 활물질의 중량비가 6:4를 초과하는 경우, 압연 과정에서 활물질이 깨지는 현상이 심화되어 압연 후 음극 활물질층 전체의 BET 비표면적이 지나치게 증가하고, 이에 따라 이러한 음극을 구비하는 리튬 이차전지의 고온에서의 수명 및 안전성이 저하된다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 제1 음극 활물질과 제2 음극 활물질의 중량비는 5:5일 수 있다. 상기 제1 음극 활물질과 제2 음극 활물질의 중량비가 5:5인 경우, 고온에서 음극의 표면 반응성이 더욱 개선될 수 있고, 이에 따라 음극 및 상기 음극을 구비하는 리튬 이차전지의 고온 특성 및 안전성이 더욱 개선될 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 음극 활물질층 전체 100 중량%을 기준으로 상기 제1 음극 활물질 및 제2 음극 활물질의 총 함량이 80 중량% 내지 98 중량%, 또는 90 중량% 내지 98 중량%일 수 있다. 상기 제1 음극 활물질 및 제2 음극 활물질의 함량이 전술한 범위를 만족하는 경우, 전지의 용량이 충분히 발현되면서 전도성을 확보하기 용이할 수 있고, 저항 증가를 방지하기 용이할 수 있다. 또한, 공정성 확보가 가능하면서 집전체와의 접착력을 확보하기 용이할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 도전재는 음극 활물질층 100 중량%을 기준으로 1 중량% 내지 10 중량%으로 첨가될 수 있다. 이러한 도전재는 당해 전지에 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않으면서 도전성을 가진 것이라면 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니며, 예를 들어, 천연 흑연이나 인조 흑연 등의 흑연; 아세틸렌 블랙, 케첸 블랙, 채널 블랙, 퍼네이스 블랙, 램프 블랙, 서버 블랙 등의 카본 블랙; 탄소 섬유나 금속 섬유 등의 도전성 섬유; 불화 카본; 알루미늄, 니켈 분말 등의 금속 분말; 산화아연, 티탄산 칼륨 등의 도전성 위스키; 산화 티탄 등의 도전성 금속 산화물; 폴리페닐렌 유도체 등의 도전성 소재 등이 사용될 수 있다.
상기 바인더는 활물질과 도전재 등의 결합과 활물질과 집전체에 대한 결합에 조력하는 성분이다. 본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 바인더는 음극 활물질층 100 중량%을 기준으로 1 중량% 내지 10 중량%으로 첨가될 수 있다. 이러한 바인더의 예로는, 폴리불화비닐리덴(PVdF), 폴리아크릴산(PAA), 폴리비닐알코올, 카르복실메틸셀룰로오즈(CMC), 전분, 히드록시프로필셀룰로오즈, 재생 셀룰로오즈, 폴리비닐피롤리돈, 테트라플루오로에틸렌, 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 에틸렌-프로필렌-디엔테르 폴리머(EPDM), 술폰화 EPDM, 스티렌 부타디엔 고무, 불소 고무, 다양한 공중합체 등을 들 수 있다.
음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적이 증가할수록 표면에서의 반응성이 높아져 SEI 층의 함량이 더욱 증가할 수 있다. 음극 표면에 형성되는 SEI 층은 고온에서 분해되어 발열 및 가스가 발생하는데 이로 인해 전지의 내부 단락을 야기할 수 있어, 최종적으로 음극 및 나아가 전지의 열적 안전성에 큰 영향을 미친다. 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적이 증가할수록 SEI 층의 함량이 더욱 증가하기 때문에 고온에서의 SEI 층의 분해 발열량이 더욱 증가할 수 있고, 이에 따라 고온에서의 음극 및 전지의 열적 안전성이 매우 감소할 수 있다.
본 발명에서, 상기 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적은 1.1 m2/g 내지 1.7 m2/g이다. 여기서, 상기 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적은 상기 제1 음극 활물질, 제2 음극 활물질, 도전재, 및 바인더가 혼합된 음극 활물질층 전체에 대한 BET 비표면적을 의미하며, 상기 제1 음극 활물질과 제2 음극 활물질 각각의 BET 비표면적과는 상이하다. 상기 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적은 압연 후 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적을 의미한다. 상기 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적이 전술한 범위를 만족하는 경우, 음극 활물질층 표면에서의 계면 저항을 개선하여 급속 충전 특성을 확보할 수 있으며, 동시에 고온에서의 부반응 및 SEI 층의 분해 발열량을 낮출 수 있다. 이에 따라, 고온 특성 및 안전성이 개선될 수 있다. 이러한 음극 활물질층을 포함하는 음극을 구비한 리튬 이차전지는 고온에서 전지의 수명 특성 및 용량 유지율이 개선될 수 있고, 고온에서의 발화 안전성 또한 확보할 수 있다. 여기서, 고온이란 예컨대, 45℃ 이상을 의미한다.
상기 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적이 1.1 m2/g 미만이면, 음극 활물질층의 표면에서의 계면 저항이 커 급속충전 특성이 저하된다.
상기 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적이 1.7 m2/g을 초과하면, 표면 반응성이 높아져 고온에서의 부반응이 증가한다. 또한, SEI 층의 분해 발열량이 증가하고, 이로 인해 전지의 발화를 야기할 수 있으므로 고온에서 전지의 수명 및 안정성이 확보되지 않는다.
상기 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적은 제1 흑연, 비정질 탄소층, 및 제2 음극 활물질의 종류 및 함량, 전극의 압연밀도 등에 의해 결정될 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 동일 조성 이외에 전극의 압연밀도에 의해서도 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적이 영향받을 수 있다. 예컨대, 전극의 압연밀도가 증가할수록 전극의 공극률(porosity)이 낮아지므로 이에 따라 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적이 달라질 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 음극 활물질층의 공극률(porosity)이 20% 내지 30%, 또는 20% 내지 26%, 또는 26% 내지 30%일 수 있다. 음극 활물질층의 공극률이 전술한 범위를 만족하는 경우, 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적이 1.1 m2/g 내지 1.7 m2/g이기 보다 용이할 수 있다. 즉, 제1 음극 활물질과 제2 음극 활물질의 중량비가 4:6 내지 6:4를 만족하고, 음극 활물질층의 공극률(porosity)이 20% 내지 30%인 경우 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적이 1.1 m2/g 내지 1.7 m2/g이기 보다 용이할 수 있다. 특히, 제1 음극 활물질과 제2 음극 활물질의 중량비가 5:5인 경우에 음극 활물질층의 공극률(porosity)이 20% 내지 30%인 경우 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적이 1.1 m2/g 내지 1.7 m2/g이기 보다 용이할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적은 1.12 m2/g 내지 1.69 m2/g일 수 있다. 상기 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적이 전술한 범위를 만족하는 경우, 음극 활물질층 표면에서의 계면 저항을 개선하여 고온에서의 부반응을 감소시켜 급속충전 특성을 개선하기 더욱 용이할 수 있다. 또한, SEI 층의 분해 발열량을 낮추기 더욱 용이할 수 있다. 이에 따라, 고온 특성 및 안전성이 개선되기 더욱 용이할 수 있다.
상기 음극 활물질층의 BET(Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) 비표면적은 하기와 같은 방법에 의해 측정할 수 있다. 완전히 건조된 음극을(음극 집전체 포함) 8 mm x 8 mm로 잘라서 30장을 샘플링하여 준비한다. 이 때, 상기 음극 활물질층은 약 80 ㎛의 두께를 가지며, 3.6 mAh/cm2 양으로 로딩된 것으로 조절될 수 있다. 샘플링된 음극 활물질층을 표준 샘플 셀(standard sample cell, 초자)에 채워 넣고 130℃ 진공 조건에서 2시간 건조시킨다. 77 K의 액체 질소 통속에서 측정되도록 액체 질소를 채워 넣는다. Standard sample cell의 열을 식힌 후 액체 질소 조건에서 측정되도록 Standard sample cell을 측정 장비 BEL Japan 사 BELSORP-mino II에 고정시킨다. 다음 측정 프로그램을 작동시켜 질소 가스 환경에서 샘플링된 전극 표면에 흡탈착되는 과정을 통해 BET 비표면적을 측정한다. 이 때, BET 비표면적 계산 시에 샘플의 무게로 음극 집전체를 제외한 음극 활물질층의 무게를 입력한다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 음극 활물질층의 전체 기공 체적(total pore volume)이 0.010 cm3/g 내지 0.017 cm3/g일 수 있다.
여기서, 상기 음극 활물질층의 전체 기공 체적은 상기 제1 음극 활물질, 제2 음극 활물질, 도전재, 및 바인더가 혼합된 음극 활물질층 전체에 대한 기공 체적을 의미하며, 상기 제1 음극 활물질과 제2 음극 활물질 각각의 기공 체적과는 상이하다. 상기 음극 활물질층의 전체 기공 체적은 압연 후 음극 활물질층의 전체 기공 체적을 의미한다. 음극 활물질층의 전체 기공 체적은 예컨대, 상기 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적 측정시에 함께 측정하거나 수은압입법, micro CT 등을 이용하여 측정할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 리튬 이차전지용 음극은 제1 흑연 및 상기 제1 흑연의 표면에 위치하는 비정질 탄소층을 포함하는 제1 음극 활물질 및 제2 흑연을 포함하고 상기 제2 흑연의 표면에 탄소층을 포함하지 않는 제2 음극 활물질을 함께 음극 활물질층에 특정 중량비로 포함함으로써, 음극 제조 시의 압연 과정에서 음극 활물질의 표면이 깨져 음극 활물질층 전체의 BET 비표면적이 증가하는 문제가 개선될 수 있고, 급속 충방전이 가능하다. 이에 따라, 고온 특성 및 안전성도 확보할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 리튬 이차전지용 음극은 충전 속도(charge rate)가 1.5C이면서, 25분 내 충전량이 75% 이상일 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 리튬 이차전지용 음극은 압연 후 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적이 소정 범위의 값을 가짐에 따라 고온에서의 음극의 표면 반응성이 개선되어 고온 특성 및 안전성이 개선될 수 있다.
본 발명에 따른 리튬 이차전지용 음극은 후술하는 제조 방법에 의해 제조될 수 있으나, 상기 음극의 제조 방법이 이에 의해 한정되지는 않는다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에 따른 리튬 이차전지용 음극의 제조 방법은,
제1 흑연 및 상기 제1 흑연의 표면에 위치하는 비정질 탄소층을 포함하는 제1 음극 활물질을 제조하는 단계;
상기 제조한 제1 음극 활물질, 제2 흑연을 포함하고 상기 제2 흑연의 표면에 탄소층을 포함하지 않는 제2 음극 활물질, 도전재, 바인더, 및 분산매를 포함하는 음극 활물질 슬러리를 제조하는 단계; 및
상기 음극 활물질 슬러리를 음극 집전체의 적어도 일면에 코팅 및 압연한 후 건조하는 단계를 포함한다.
이하에서는 본 발명의 일 실시양태에 따른 리튬 이차전지용 음극의 제조 방법을 주요 부분 위주로 살펴본다.
우선, 제1 흑연 및 상기 제1 흑연의 표면에 위치하는 비정질 탄소층을 포함하는 제1 음극 활물질을 제조한다. 상기 제1 흑연 및 비정질 탄소층에 대해서는 전술한 내용을 참조한다.
상기 비정질 탄소층을 제1 흑연의 표면에 형성하는 방법은 특별히 한정되지 않고 당분야에 통상적으로 공지된 방법을 통하여 수행할 수 있다. 예컨대, 제1 흑연에 탄소계 전구체 물질을 직접 코팅한 후 열처리하여 제조할 수 있다. 구체적으로, 탄소계 전구체 물질에 제1 흑연을 혼합 또는 침지한 후 700 내지 1300℃에서 열처리하여 제조할 수 있다. 상기 열처리 과정이 전술한 온도 범위에서 수행되는 경우, 비정질 탄소층을 형성할 수 있으면서 제1 흑연의 결정 구조 등에 영향을 미치지 않을 수 있다. 또는, 제1 흑연 표면에 탄소계 전구체 물질을 화학 증착시킴으로써 형성할 수 있다.
그 다음, 상기 제조한 제1 음극 활물질, 제2 흑연을 포함하고 상기 제2 흑연의 표면에 탄소층을 포함하지 않는 제2 음극 활물질, 도전재, 바인더, 및 분산매를 포함하는 음극 활물질 슬러리를 제조한다.
상기 제1 음극 활물질, 제2 음극 활물질, 도전재, 및 바인더에 대해서는 전술한 내용을 참조한다.
상기 분산매는 바인더의 종류에 따라서 바인더를 용해시키는 용매 역할을 할 수도 있고, 바인더를 용해시키지는 않고 분산시키는 분산매 역할을 할 수도 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 분산매는 N-메틸-2-피롤리돈 (N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone), 아세톤(acetone), 메틸 에틸 케톤(Methyl ethyl ketone), 디메틸포름아미드(Diemthylformaide), 디메틸아세트아미드(Dimethyl acetamide), 메탄올(Methanol), 에탄올(Ethanol), 이소프로필 알코올(Isopropyl alcohol), 또는 이들 중 2 이상의 유기 용매, 또는 물일 수 있다.
그 다음, 상기 음극 활물질 슬러리를 음극 집전체의 적어도 일면에 코팅 및 압연한 후 건조한다.
상기 음극 집전체에 대해서는 전술한 내용을 참조한다.
상기 음극 활물질 슬러리를 음극 집전체의 적어도 일면에 코팅하는 방법은 당업계에 알려진 통상적인 방법에 의한 것일 수 있다. 상기 코팅 방법의 비제한적인 예로는, 딥(Dip) 코팅법, 다이(Die) 코팅법, 롤(roll) 코팅법, 콤마(comma) 코팅법, 닥터 블레이드 코팅법, 리버스롤 코팅법, 다이렉트롤 코팅법 등의 방법이 있다.
상기 코팅된 음극 활물질 슬러리의 건조는 통상의 음극 제조 시 건조 방법에 의해 건조되는 것일 수 있다. 예를 들어, 상기 코팅된 음극 활물질 슬러리의 건조는 80℃ 내지 150℃, 80℃ 내지 110℃, 또는 110℃ 내지 150℃에서 공기에 의해 30초 내지 5분, 30초 내지 2분, 또는 2분 내지 5분 동안 수행될 수 있다. 건조 시간이 상기 범위 내로 수행되는 경우에 생산성을 저해하지 않으면서도 잔류 용매를 제거할 수 있는 효과를 가질 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 리튬 이차전지용 음극은 양극 및 분리막과 함께 리튬 이차전지로 제조될 수 있다.
본 발명에 따른 리튬 이차전지는 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 리튬 이차전지용 음극을 구비함으로써 고온에서 수명 특성 및 용량 유지율이 개선될 수 있고, 고온에서의 발화 안전성이 개선될 수 있다.
상기 리튬 이차전지는 리튬 금속 이차 전지, 리튬 이온 이차 전지, 리튬 폴리머 이차 전지 또는 리튬 이온 폴리머 이차 전지 등을 포함할 수 있다.
본 발명에 따른 리튬 이차전지용 음극과 함께 적용될 양극은 특별히 제한되지 않으며, 당업계에 알려진 통상적인 방법에 따라 양극 활물질, 도전재, 및 바인더를 포함하는 양극 활물질층이 양극 집전체에 결착된 형태로 제조할 수 있다.
상기 양극 활물질은 종래 리튬 이차전지의 양극에 사용될 수 있는 통상적인 양극 활물질이 사용 가능하며, 리튬함유 전이금속 산화물이 사용될 수 있다. 예컨대, LiCoC2, LiNiO2, LiMnO2, LiMn2O4, Li(NiaCobMnc)O2(0<a<1, 0<b<1, 0<c<1, a+b+c=1), LiNi1-yCoyO2, LiCo1-yMnyO2, LiNi1-yMnyO2(0≤y<1), Li(NiaCobMnc)O4(0<a<2, 0<b<2, 0<c<2, a+b+c=2), LiMn2-zNizO4, LiMn2-zCozO4(0<z<2), LiCoPO4, LiFePO4, 또는 이들 중 2종 이상일 수 있다. 또한, 이러한 산화물(oxide) 외에 황화물(sulfide), 셀렌화물(selenide) 및 할로겐화물(halide) 등일 수 있다.
양극 집전체의 비제한적인 예로는 알루미늄, 니켈 또는 이들의 조합에 의하여 제조되는 호일 등이 있다.
상기 양극 활물질층에 포함되는 도전재는 통상적으로 양극 활물질층 전체 중량을 기준으로 1 중량% 내지 30 중량%으로 첨가될 수 있다. 이러한 도전재는 당해 전지에 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않으면서 도전성을 가진 것이라면 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니며, 예를 들어, 천연 흑연이나 인조 흑연 등의 흑연; 아세틸렌 블랙, 케첸 블랙, 채널 블랙, 퍼네이스 블랙, 램프 블랙, 서버 블랙 등의 카본 블랙; 탄소 섬유나 금속 섬유 등의 도전성 섬유; 불화 카본; 알루미늄, 니켈 분말 등의 금속 분말; 산화아연, 티탄산 칼륨 등의 도전성 위스키; 산화 티탄 등의 도전성 금속 산화물; 폴리페닐렌 유도체 등의 도전성 소재 등이 사용될 수 있다.
상기 양극 활물질층에 포함되는 바인더는 활물질과 도전재 등의 결합과 집전체에 대한 결합에 조력하는 성분으로서, 통상적으로 양극 활물질층 전체 중량을 기준으로 1 중량% 내지 30 중량%으로 첨가될 수 있다. 이러한 바인더의 예로는, 폴리불화비닐리덴(PVdF), 폴리아크릴산(PAA), 폴리비닐알코올, 카르복실메틸셀룰로오즈(CMC), 전분, 히드록시프로필셀룰로오즈, 재생 셀룰로오즈, 폴리비닐피롤리돈, 테트라플루오로에틸렌, 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 에틸렌-프로필렌-디엔테르 폴리머(EPDM), 술폰화 EPDM, 스티렌 부타디엔 고무, 불소 고무, 다양한 공중합체 등을 들 수 있다.
본 발명에 따른 리튬 이차전지에 적용되는 분리막은 특별히 제한되지 않으며, 다공성 고분자 기재만으로 구성되거나, 다공성 고분자 기재; 및 상기 다공성 고분자 기재의 적어도 일면에 형성되며, 다수의 무기물 입자들, 및 바인더 고분자를 포함하는 유무기 복합 다공성층;을 포함할 수 있다. 상기 분리막은 상기 양극과 음극 사이에 개재되어 양극과 음극 사이를 절연하는 역할을 한다.
상기 다공성 고분자 기재는 당해 분야에서 통상적으로 사용되는 다공성 고분자 기재라면 모두 사용이 가능하다. 예를 들면 상기 다공성 고분자 기재로 폴리올레핀계 다공성 고분자 막(membrane) 또는 부직포를 사용할 수 있으나, 이에 특별히 한정되는 것은 아니다.
상기 폴리올레핀계 다공성 고분자 막은 고밀도 폴리에틸렌, 선형 저밀도 폴리에틸렌, 저밀도 폴리에틸렌, 초고분자량 폴리에틸렌과 같은 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 폴리부틸렌, 폴리펜텐 등의 폴리올레핀계 고분자, 또는 이들 중 2 이상으로 형성한 막(membrane)을 들 수 있다.
상기 부직포로는 폴리올레핀계 부직포 외에 예를 들어, 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트(polyethyleneterephthalate), 폴리부틸렌테레프탈레이트 (polybutyleneterephthalate), 폴리에스테르(polyester), 폴리아세탈 (polyacetal), 폴리아미드 (polyamide), 폴리카보네이트 (polycarbonate), 폴리이미드 (polyimide), 폴리에테르에테르케톤 (polyetheretherketone), 폴리에테르설폰 (polyethersulfone), 폴리페닐렌옥사이드 (polyphenyleneoxide), 폴리페닐렌설파이드 (polyphenylenesulfide), 폴리에틸렌나프탈렌(polyethylenenaphthalene), 또는 이들 중 2 이상으로 형성한 부직포를 들 수 있다. 부직포의 구조는 장섬유로 구성된 스폰본드 부직포 또는 멜트 블로운 부직포일 수 있다.
상기 다공성 고분자 기재의 두께는 특별히 제한되지 않으나, 3 ㎛ 내지 50 ㎛, 또는 3 ㎛ 내지 15 ㎛일 수 있다. 다공성 고분자 기재에 존재하는 기공 크기 및 기공도 역시 특별히 제한되지 않으나 각각 0.01 ㎛ 내지 50 ㎛ 및 10% 내지 95%일 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 무기물 입자는 전기화학적으로 안정하기만 하면 특별히 제한되지 않는다. 즉, 본 발명에서 사용할 수 있는 무기물 입자는 적용되는 전지의 작동 전압 범위(예컨대, Li/Li+ 기준으로 0 ~ 5V)에서 산화 및/또는 환원 반응이 일어나지 않는 것이면 특별히 제한되지 않는다. 상기 무기물 입자는 유전율 상수가 5 이상, 또는 10 이상인 고유전율 무기물 입자, 리튬이온 전달 능력을 갖는 무기물 입자, 또는 이들 중 2종 이상을 포함할 수 있다. 유전율 상수가 5 이상인 무기물 입자는 BaTiO3, BaSO4, Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT), Pb1-xLaxZr1-yTiyO3 (PLZT, 여기서, 0<x<1 , 0<y<1임), Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PMN-PT), 하프니아(HfO2), SrTiO3, SnO2, CeO2, MgO, Mg(OH)2, NiO, CaO, ZnO, ZrO2, Y2O3, SiO2, Al2O3, γ-AlOOH, Al(OH)3, SiC, TiO2, 또는 이들 중 2종 이상을 혼합하여 사용할 수 있으나, 이에 한정되지 않는다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 무기물 입자의 크기는 제한이 없으나, 균일한 두께의 유무기 복합 다공성층 형성 및 적절한 공극률을 위하여, 0.01 내지 10 ㎛, 또는 0.05 내지 1.0 ㎛ 범위의 평균 입경을 가질 수 있다. 이 때, 상기 무기물 입자의 평균 입경은 일반적인 입도 분포계에 의해 분급 후의 입자의 입도 분포를 측정하고, 그 측정결과에 근거하여 산출되는 작은 입경 측으로부터의 적산값 50%의 입도(D50)를 의미한다. 이러한 입도 분포는 레이저 회절 분석법에 의해 측정될 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 분리막에 포함되는 바인더 고분자는 폴리비닐리덴플루오라이드(PVdF), 폴리비닐리덴플루오라이드-헥사플루오로프로필렌(polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene), 폴리비닐리덴플루오라이드-트리클로로에틸렌(polyvinylidene fluoride-co-trichloroethylene), 폴리비닐리덴플루오라이드-클로로트리플루오로에틸렌(polyvinylidene fluoride-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene), 폴리메틸메타크릴레이트(polymethyl methacrylate), 폴리아크릴로니트릴(polyacrylonitrile), 폴리비닐피롤리돈 (polyvinylpyrrolidone), 폴리비닐아세테이트(polyvinylacetate), 에틸렌 비닐 아세테이트 공중합체 (polyethylene-co-vinyl acetate), 폴리에틸렌옥사이드(polyethylene oxide), 셀룰로오스 아세테이트 (cellulose acetate), 셀룰로오스 아세테이트 부티레이트(cellulose acetate butyrate), 셀룰로오스 아세테이트 프로피오네이트(cellulose acetate propionate), 시아노에틸풀루란(cyanoethylpullulan), 시아노에틸폴리비 닐알콜(cyanoethylpolyvinylalcohol), 시아노에틸셀룰로오스(cyanoethyl cellulose), 시아노에틸수크로오스 (cyanoethylsucrose), 풀루란(pullulan), 카르복실 메틸 셀룰로오스(carboxyl methyl cellulose), 아크릴로니트릴 스티렌 부타디엔 공중합체(acrylonitrile-styrene-butadiene copolymer), 폴리이미드(polyimide), 또는 이들 중 2종 이상을 포함할 수 있으나, 이에 한정되지 않는다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 분리막에 포함되는 무기물 입자와 바인더 고분자의 함량비는 20:80 내지 99.9:0.1, 50:50 내지 99.5:0.5, 또는 70:30 내지 80:20일 수 있다. 상기 무기물 입자와 바인더 고분자의 함량비가 전술한 범위일 경우, 무기물 입자 사이의 충분한 접착력을 확보하면서도 무기물 입자들 사이에 형성되는 빈 공간을 충분히 확보할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 유무기 복합 다공성층은 상기 무기물 입자들이 충전되어 서로 접촉된 상태에서 상기 바인더 고분자에 의해 서로 결착되고, 이로 인해 무기물 입자들 사이에 인터스티셜 볼륨(interstitial volumes)이 형성되고, 상기 무기물 입자들 사이의 인터스티셜 볼륨은 빈 공간이 되어 기공을 형성하는 구조를 구비할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 리튬 이차전지는 전해액을 포함하며, 상기 전해액은 유기 용매와 리튬염을 포함하는 것일 수 있다. 또한, 상기 전해액으로 유기 고체 전해질, 또는 무기 고체 전해질 등이 사용될 수 있다.
상기 유기 용매로는, 예를 들어, N-메틸-2-피롤리돈, 에틸렌 카보네이트, 프로필렌 카보네이트, 부틸렌 카보네이트, 디메틸 카보네이트, 디에틸 카보네이트, 감마-부틸로락톤, 1,2-디메톡시 에탄, 테트라히드록시 프랑(franc), 2-메틸 테트라하이드로푸란, 디메틸술폭시드, 1,3-디옥솔란, 포름아미드, 디메틸포름아미드, 디옥솔란, 아세토니트릴, 니트로메탄, 포름산 메틸, 초산메틸, 인산 트리에스테르, 트리메톡시 메탄, 디옥솔란 유도체, 설포란, 메틸 설포란, 1,3-디메틸-2-이비다졸리디논, 프로필렌 카보네이트 유도체, 테트라하이드로푸란 유도체, 에테르, 피로피온산 메틸, 프로피온산 에틸 등의 비양자성 유기용매가 사용될 수 있다.
상기 리튬염은 상기 유기 용매에 용해되기 좋은 물질로서, 예를 들어, LiCl, LiBr, LiI, LiClO4, LiBF4, LiB10Cl10, LiPF6, LiCF3SO3, LiCF3CO2, LiAsF6, LiSbF6, LiAlCl4, CH3SO3Li, CF3SO3Li, (CF3SO2)2NLi, 클로로 보란 리튬, 저급 지방족 카르본산 리튬, 4-페닐 붕산 리튬, 이미드 등이 사용될 수 있다.
또한, 상기 전해액에 충방전 특성, 난연성 등의 개선을 목적으로, 예를 들어, 피리딘, 트리에틸포스파이트, 트리에탄올아민, 환상 에테르, 에틸렌 디아민, n-글라임(glyme), 헥사 인산 트리 아미드, 니트로벤젠 유도체, 유황, 퀴논 이민 염료, N-치환 옥사졸리디논, N,N-치환 이미다졸리딘, 에틸렌 글리콜 디알킬 에테르, 암모늄염, 피롤, 2-메톡시 에탄올, 삼염화 알루미늄 등이 첨가될 수도 있다. 경우에 따라서는, 불연성을 부여하기 위하여, 사염화탄소, 삼불화에틸렌 등의 할로겐 함유 용매를 더 포함시킬 수도 있고, 고온 보존 특성을 향상시키기 위하여 이산화탄산 가스를 더 포함시킬 수도 있다.
상기 유기 고체 전해질로는, 예를 들어, 폴리에틸렌 유도체, 폴리에틸렌 옥사이드 유도체, 폴리프로필렌 옥사이드 유도체, 인산 에스테르 폴리머, 폴리에지테이션 리신(agitation lysine), 폴리에스테르 술파이드, 폴리비닐 알코올, 폴리 불화 비닐리덴, 이온성 해리기를 포함하는 중합체 등이 사용될 수 있다.
상기 무기 고체 전해질로는, 예를 들어, Li3N, LiI, Li5NI2, Li3N-LiI-LiOH, LiSiO4, LiSiO4-LiI-LiOH, Li2SiS3, Li4SiO4, Li4SiO4-LiI-LiOH, Li3PO4-Li2S-SiS2 등의 Li의 질화물, 할로겐화물, 황산염 등이 사용될 수 있다.
상기 전해액 주입은 최종 제품의 제조 공정 및 요구 물성에 따라, 전지 제조 공정 중 적절한 단계에서 행해질 수 있다. 즉, 전지 조립 전 또는 전지 조립 최종 단계 등에서 적용될 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 리튬 이차전지용 분리막을 전지에 적용하는 공정으로는 일반적인 공정인 권취(winding) 이외에도 분리막과 전극의 적층(lamination, stack) 및 접음(folding) 공정이 가능하다.
본 발명의 일 실시양태에서, 상기 리튬 이차전지용 분리막은 리튬 이차전지의 양극과 음극 사이에 개재될 수 있고, 복수의 셀 또는 전극을 집합시켜 전극조립체를 구성할 때 인접하는 셀 또는 전극 사이에 개재될 수 있다. 상기 전극조립체는 단순 스택형, 젤리-롤형, 스택-폴딩형, 라미네이션-스택형 등의 다양한 구조를 가질 수 있다.
상기 리튬 이차전지의 외형은 특별한 제한이 없으나, 캔을 사용한 원통형, 각형, 파우치(pouch)형 또는 코인(coin)형 등일 수 있다.
이하, 본 발명의 이해를 돕기 위하여 실시예를 들어 상세하게 설명하기로 한다. 그러나, 본 발명에 따른 실시예들은 여러 가지 다른 형태로 변형될 수 있으며, 본 발명의 범위가 하기 실시예에 한정되는 것으로 해석되어서는 안 된다. 본 발명의 실시예들은 당업계에서 평균적인 지식을 가진 자에게 본 발명을 보다 완전하게 설명하기 위해 제공되는 것이다.
실시예 1
리튬 이차전지용 음극의 제조
제1 흑연으로 인조흑연(shanshan社)에 피치를 코팅한 후 1000 내지 1300℃에서 열처리하여, 제1 흑연의 표면에 비정질 탄소층을 포함하는 제1 음극 활물질(평균 입경: 15 ㎛, BET 비표면적: 0.9 m2/g)을 제조하였다.
상기 제1 음극 활물질에서 비정질 탄소층의 함량은 제1 음극 활물질 전체 100 중량% 기준으로 3 중량%이고, 비정질 탄소층의 두께는 약 500 nm였다.
그 다음, 상기 제조한 제1 음극 활물질과 제2 음극 활물질로 인조흑연(평균 입경: 18 ㎛, BET 비표면적: 1.3 m2/g)을 5:5 중량비로 혼합하고, 상기 혼합한 음극 활물질과 도전재로 카본 블랙, 바인더로 스티렌 부타디엔 고무(SBR), 및 카르복시메틸셀룰로오즈(CMC)를 96.05:0.5:2.3:1.15의 중량비로 혼합하여 음극 활물질 슬러리를 제조하였다.
8 ㎛ 두께의 구리 박막의 일면에 상기 음극 활물질 슬러리를 코팅한 후 롤프레스를 이용하여 압연하고, 이를 진공에서 건조하여 리튬 이차전지용 음극을 제조하였다. 이 때, 상기 제조한 음극의 공극률(porosity)이 26%였다.
리튬 이차전지의 제조
양극 활물질로 LiCoO2, 바인더로 PVDF, 및 도전재로 아세틸렌 블랙을 96.5:1.5:2의 중량비로 혼합한 양극 활물질 슬러리를 두께 10 ㎛의 알루미늄 박막의 일면에 코팅한 후 건조 및 압연하여 양극을 제조하였다.
상기 제조한 양극 및 음극 사이에 10 ㎛ 두께의 폴리에틸렌 원단을 개재하고 80℃의 조건에서 가압하여 전극 조립체를 제조하였다.
상기 제조한 전극 조립체에 전해액(EC:PC:EP:PP=2:1:2.5:4.5, LiPF6 1.4M)(이온 전도도 ≥ 6.5 mS/cm)을 주입하여 리튬 이차전지를 제조하였다.
실시예 2
실시예 1의 제1 음극 활물질과 제2 음극 활물질을 6:4의 중량비로 혼합한 것을 제외하고, 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 리튬 이차전지용 음극 및 리튬 이차전지를 제조하였다. 이 때, 상기 제조한 음극의 공극률(porosity)이 26%였다.
비교예 1
실시예 1의 제1 음극 활물질만을 음극 활물질로 사용한 것을 제외하고, 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 리튬 이차전지용 음극 및 리튬 이차전지를 제조하였다. 이 때, 상기 제조한 음극의 공극률(porosity)이 26%였다.
비교예 2
실시예 1의 제1 음극 활물질과 제2 음극 활물질을 7:3 중량비로 혼합한 것을 제외하고, 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 리튬 이차전지용 음극 및 리튬 이차전지를 제조하였다. 이 때, 상기 제조한 음극의 공극률(porosity)이 26%였다.
비교예 3
실시예 1의 제1 음극 활물질과 제2 음극 활물질을 3:7 중량비로 혼합한 것을 제외하고, 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 리튬 이차전지용 음극 및 리튬 이차전지를 제조하였다. 이 때, 상기 제조한 음극의 공극률(porosity)이 26%였다.
평가예 1: 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적 및 전체 기공 체적 측정
실시예 1 내지 2 및 비교예 1 내지 3에서 제조한 리튬 이차전지용 음극에서 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적 및 전체 기공 체적을 측정하여 표 1에 나타내었다.
상기 음극 활물질층의 BET(Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) 비표면적은 하기의 방법으로 측정하였다.
완전히 건조된 음극을(음극 집전체 포함) 8 mm x 8 mm로 잘라서 30장을 샘플링하여 준비하였다. 샘플링된 음극 활물질층을 표준 샘플 셀(standard sample cell, 초자)에 채워 넣고 130℃ 진공 조건에서 2시간 건조시켰다. 77 K의 액체 질소 통속에서 측정되도록 액체 질소를 채워 넣었다. Standard sample cell의 열을 식힌 후 액체 질소 조건에서 측정되도록 Standard sample cell을 측정 장비 BEL Japan 사 BELSORP-mino II에 고정시켰다. 측정 프로그램을 작동시켜 질소 가스 환경에서 샘플링된 전극 표면에 흡탈착되는 과정을 통해 BET 비표면적을 측정하였다. BET 비표면적 계산 시에 샘플의 무게로 음극 집전체를 제외한 음극 활물질층의 무게를 입력하였다.
상기 음극 활물질층의 전체 기공 체적은 상기 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적 측정시에 함께 측정되었다.
평가예 2: 고온에서의 리튬 이차전지의 용량 유지율 평가
실시예 1 내지 2 및 비교예 1 내지 3에서 제조한 리튬 이차전지를 각각 45℃에서 1.5C 속도로 4.45V까지 정전류(CC) 조건으로 충전하고, 이후 정전압(CV) 조건으로 충전 전류 0.005C(cut-off current)까지 충전하고, 1C 속도로 3V까지 정전류 조건으로 방전하였다. 상기 충방전을 1 사이클로 하여 45℃에서 사이클 진행에 따른 전지의 용량 잔존율을 측정하였다.
용량 잔존율은 하기의 식으로 계산하였다.
용량 잔존율 = (방전 용량 / 초기 방전 용량 ) X 100(%)
그 결과를 도 1에 나타내었다.
도 1에서 확인할 수 있듯이, 실시예 1 내지 2에서 제조한 리튬 이차전지는 비교예 1 내지 3에서 제조한 리튬 이차전지에 비해 우수한 용량 잔존율을 가지는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
평가예 3: HOTBOX 테스트 결과 분석
실시예 1 내지 2 및 비교예 1 내지 3에서 제조한 리튬 이차전지를 오븐에 투입하고, 실온에서 5℃/min으로 승온한 후 140℃에서 30분간 방치하였다. 140℃에 도달한 후 30분 이내의 발화율을 측정하여 하기 표 2에 나타내었다.
이 때, 발화율은 승온 및 온도 유지 중 전지 내에서 단락으로 급격한 온도 상승과 전압 강하가 발생함과 동시에 발화가 일어나는 전지의 비율로 구하였다.
상기 표 2에서 확인할 수 있듯이, 실시예 1 내지 2에서 제조한 리튬 이차전지의 140℃에서의 발화율은 비교예 1 내지 3에서 제조한 리튬 이차전지의 140℃에서의 발화율보다 매우 낮음을 확인할 수 있었다.
Claims (11)
- 음극 집전체; 및상기 음극 집전체의 적어도 일면에 위치하며, 제1 흑연 및 상기 제1 흑연의 표면에 위치하는 비정질 탄소층을 포함하는 제1 음극 활물질, 제2 흑연을 포함하고 상기 제2 흑연의 표면에 탄소층을 포함하지 않는 제2 음극 활물질, 도전재, 및 바인더를 포함하는 음극 활물질층을 포함하고,상기 제1 음극 활물질과 제2 음극 활물질의 중량비는 4:6 내지 6:4이고,상기 음극 활물질층의 BET 비표면적이 1.1 m2/g 내지 1.7 m2/g인 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 음극.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 음극 활물질층의 전체 기공 체적이 0.010 cm3/g 내지 0.017 cm3/g인 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 음극.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 제1 흑연은 천연흑연, 인조흑연, 흑연화 탄소 섬유, 흑연화 메조 카본마이크로비드, 또는 이들 중 2 이상을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 음극.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 비정질 탄소층은 글루코스, 프락토스, 갈락토오스, 말토오스, 락토오스, 수크로스, 페놀계 수지, 나프탈렌 수지, 폴리비닐알콜 수지, 우레탄 수지, 폴리이미드 수지, 석탄계 피치, 석유계 피치, 저분자 중질유, 또는 이들 중 2 이상을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 음극.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 비정질 탄소층은 상기 제1 음극 활물질 전체 100 중량%을 기준으로 1 중량% 내지 20 중량%으로 포함되는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 음극.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 제1 음극 활물질의 평균 입경은 5 ㎛ 내지 30 ㎛인 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 음극.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 제1 음극 활물질의 BET 비표면적이 0.5 m2/g 내지 2 m2/g인 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 음극.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 제2 흑연은 천연흑연, 인조흑연, 흑연화 탄소 섬유, 흑연화 메조 카본마이크로비드, 또는 이들 중 2 이상을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 음극.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 제2 음극 활물질의 평균 입경은 13 ㎛ 내지 25 ㎛인 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 음극.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 제2 음극 활물질의 BET 비표면적은 0.5 m2/g 내지 2 m2/g인 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 음극.
- 제1항 내지 제10항 중 어느 한 항에 따른 리튬 이차전지용 음극을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지.
