Abstract
Description
液晶滴下工法では、まず、2枚の電極付き基板の一方に、ディスペンスにより長方形状のシールパターンを形成する。次いで、シール剤が未硬化の状態で液晶の微小滴を基板のシール枠内に滴下し、真空下で他方の基板を重ね合わせ、シール部に紫外線等の光を照射して仮硬化を行う。その後、加熱して本硬化を行い、液晶表示素子を作製する。現在この滴下工法が液晶表示素子の製造方法の主流となっている。
このような狭額縁設計に伴い、液晶表示素子において、画素領域からシール剤までの距離が近くなっており、シール剤によって液晶が汚染されることによる表示むらが生じやすくなっている。
以下に本発明を詳述する。
上記硬化性樹脂は、重合性官能基とアルキレンオキサイド骨格と水酸基とを有する化合物(以下、「本発明にかかる重合性化合物」ともいう)を含有する。本発明にかかる重合性化合物を後述するマレイミド化合物と組み合わせて用いることにより、本発明の液晶表示素子用シール剤は、接着性、硬化物の柔軟性、及び、低液晶汚染性に優れるものとなる。
また、本発明にかかる重合性化合物の有する重合性官能基は、(メタ)アクリロイル基及び/又はエポキシ基であることが好ましい。
なお、本明細書において、上記「(メタ)アクリロイル」は、アクリロイル又はメタクリロイルを意味する。
なお、本明細書において、上記「分子量」は、分子構造が特定される化合物については、構造式から求められる分子量であるが、重合度の分布が広い化合物及び変性部位が不特定な化合物については、重量平均分子量を用いて表す場合がある。本明細書において、上記「重量平均分子量」は、ゲルパーミエーションクロマトグラフィー(GPC)で溶媒としてテトラヒドロフランを用いて測定を行い、ポリスチレン換算により求められる値である。GPCによってポリスチレン換算による重量平均分子量を測定する際に用いるカラムとしては、例えば、Shodex LF-804(昭和電工社製)等が挙げられる。
式(1-2)中、A2は、下記式(4-1)~(4-7)で表される構造を表し、X2は、メチレン基、メチルメチレン基、ジメチルメチレン基、酸素原子、スルホニル基、カルボニル基、又は、結合手を表し、Y2は、下記式(5)で表される基を表し、mは、1以上3以下(平均値)である。
なお、上記式(6-1)~(6-6)において、*で示した結合位置のうち、メチレン基側の結合位置が上記式(3-1)又は上記式(3-2)における酸素原子との結合位置となる。
上記その他の重合性化合物としては、本発明にかかる重合性化合物に含まれるもの以外の、その他のエポキシ化合物やその他の(メタ)アクリル化合物等が挙げられる。
なお、本明細書において、上記「(メタ)アクリル」はアクリル又はメタクリルを意味し、上記「(メタ)アクリル化合物」は、(メタ)アクリロイル基を有する化合物を意味する。
上記ビスフェノールF型エポキシ樹脂のうち市販されているものとしては、例えば、jER806、jER4004(いずれも三菱化学社製)等が挙げられる。
上記ビスフェノールE型エポキシ樹脂のうち市販されているものとしては、例えば、R710(プリンテック社製)等が挙げられる。

なお、本明細書において上記「(メタ)アクリレート」とは、アクリレート又はメタクリレートを意味し、上記「エポキシ(メタ)アクリレート」とは、エポキシ化合物中の全てのエポキシ基を(メタ)アクリル酸と反応させた化合物のことを表す。

上記マレイミド化合物を本発明にかかる重合性化合物と組み合わせて用いることにより、本発明の液晶表示素子用シール剤は、接着性、硬化物の柔軟性、及び、低液晶汚染性に優れるものとなる。
なお、本発明において上記マレイミド化合物は、上記硬化性樹脂及び後述する光重合開始剤には含まない。
また、上記マレイミド化合物は、得られる液晶表示素子用シール剤の硬化物の柔軟性の観点から、炭素数5以上36以下の脂肪族炭化水素基を有することが好ましく、炭素数15以上25以下の脂肪族炭化水素基を有することがより好ましい。
上記脂肪族炭化水素基は、直鎖状であってもよいし、分岐鎖状であってもよいが、分岐鎖状であることが好ましい。上記脂肪族炭化水素基が分岐鎖状である場合、各側鎖の炭素数の好ましい下限は4、好ましい上限は12であり、より好ましい下限は6、より好ましい上限は9である。
上記式(8)で表される化合物としては、具体的には例えば、1,20-ビスマレイミド-10,11-ジオクチル-エイコサン(下記式(9-1)で表される化合物)、1-ヘプチレンマレイミド-2-オクチレンマレイミド-4-オクチル-5-ヘプチルシクロヘキサン(下記式(9-2)で表される化合物)、1,2-ジオクチレンマレイミド-3-オクチル-4-ヘキシルシクロヘキサン(下記式(9-3)で表される化合物)等が挙げられる。これらの上記式(8)で表される化合物は、単独で用いられてもよいし、2種以上が組み合わせて用いられてもよい。また、これらの上記式(8)で表される化合物は、米国特許第5973166号明細書に記載の方法等によって合成することができる。
上記重合開始剤としては、例えば、ラジカル重合開始剤やカチオン重合開始剤等が挙げられる。
上記BASF社製の光ラジカル重合開始剤としては、例えば、IRGACURE 184、IRGACURE 369、IRGACURE 379、IRGACURE 651、IRGACURE 819、IRGACURE 907、IRGACURE 2959、IRGACURE OXE01、ルシリンTPO等が挙げられる。
上記東京化成工業社製の光ラジカル重合開始剤としては、例えば、ベンゾインメチルエーテル、ベンゾインエチルエーテル、ベンゾインイソプロピルエーテル等が挙げられる。
これらの光ラジカル重合開始剤は、単独で用いられてもよいし、2種以上が組み合わせて用いられてもよい。
なお、本明細書において高分子アゾ化合物とは、アゾ基を有し、熱によって(メタ)アクリロイル基を硬化させることができるラジカルを生成する、数平均分子量が300以上の化合物を意味する。
なお、本明細書において、上記数平均分子量は、ゲルパーミエーションクロマトグラフィー(GPC)で溶媒としてテトラヒドロフランを用いて測定を行い、ポリスチレン換算により求められる値である。GPCによってポリスチレン換算による数平均分子量を測定する際のカラムとしては、例えば、Shodex LF-804(昭和電工社製)等が挙げられる。
上記アゾ基を介してポリアルキレンオキサイド等のユニットが複数結合した構造を有する高分子アゾ化合物としては、ポリエチレンオキサイド構造を有するものが好ましい。
上記高分子アゾ化合物としては、具体的には例えば、4,4’-アゾビス(4-シアノペンタン酸)とポリアルキレングリコールの重縮合物や、4,4’-アゾビス(4-シアノペンタン酸)と末端アミノ基を有するポリジメチルシロキサンの重縮合物等が挙げられる。
上記高分子アゾ化合物のうち市販されているものとしては、例えば、VPE-0201、VPE-0401、VPE-0601、VPS-0501、VPS-1001(いずれも和光純薬工業社製)等が挙げられる。
また、高分子ではないアゾ化合物として市販されているものとしては、例えば、V-65、V-501(いずれも和光純薬工業社製)等が挙げられる。
上記光カチオン重合開始剤は、光照射によりプロトン酸又はルイス酸を発生するものであれば特に限定されず、イオン性光酸発生タイプのものであってもよいし、非イオン性光酸発生タイプであってもよい。
上記熱硬化剤としては、例えば、有機酸ヒドラジド、アミン化合物、多価フェノール系化合物、酸無水物等が挙げられる。なかでも、有機酸ヒドラジドが好適に用いられる。
上記有機酸ヒドラジドのうち市販されているものとしては、例えば、大塚化学社製の有機酸ヒドラジド、味の素ファインテクノ社製の有機酸ヒドラジド等が挙げられる。
上記大塚化学社製の有機酸ヒドラジドとしては、例えば、SDH、ADH等が挙げられる。
上記味の素ファインテクノ社製の有機酸ヒドラジドとしては、例えば、アミキュアVDH、アミキュアVDH-J、アミキュアUDH、アミキュアUDH-J等が挙げられる。
上記無機充填剤としては、例えば、シリカ、タルク、ガラスビーズ、石綿、石膏、珪藻土、スメクタイト、ベントナイト、モンモリロナイト、セリサイト、活性白土、アルミナ、酸化亜鉛、酸化鉄、酸化マグネシウム、酸化錫、酸化チタン、炭酸カルシウム、炭酸マグネシウム、水酸化マグネシウム、水酸化アルミニウム、窒化アルミニウム、窒化珪素、硫酸バリウム、珪酸カルシウム等が挙げられる。
上記有機充填剤としては、例えば、ポリエステル微粒子、ポリウレタン微粒子、ビニル重合体微粒子、アクリル重合体微粒子等が挙げられる。
また、遮光剤として上記チタンブラックを含有する本発明の液晶表示素子用シール剤を用いて製造した液晶表示素子は、充分な遮光性を有するため、光の漏れ出しがなく高いコントラストを有し、優れた画像表示品質を有する液晶表示素子を実現することができる。
上記三菱マテリアル社製のチタンブラックとしては、例えば、12S、13M、13M-C、13R-N、14M-C等が挙げられる。
上記赤穂化成社製のチタンブラックとしては、例えば、ティラックD等が挙げられる。
また、上記チタンブラックの体積抵抗の好ましい下限は0.5Ω・cm、好ましい上限は3Ω・cmであり、より好ましい下限は1Ω・cm、より好ましい上限は2.5Ω・cmである。
なお、上記遮光剤の一次粒子径は、NICOMP 380ZLS(PARTICLE SIZING SYSTEMS社製)を用いて、上記遮光剤を溶媒(水、有機溶媒等)に分散させて測定することができる。
なお、上記25℃における貯蔵弾性率、及び、後述する60℃における貯蔵弾性率を測定する硬化物としては、シール剤にメタルハライドランプを用いて100mW/cm2の紫外線(波長365nm)を30秒照射した後、120℃で1時間加熱して硬化させたものが用いられる。
また、上記貯蔵弾性率は、動的粘弾性測定装置(例えば、IT計測制御社製、「DVA-200」等)を用いて、各測定温度において、試験片幅5mm、厚み0.35mm、掴み幅25mm、昇温速度10℃/分、周波数10Hzの条件で測定することができる。
また、接着性の観点から、上記硬化物の60℃における貯蔵弾性率の好ましい上限は2.5GPaである。
また、透湿防止性等の観点から、上記硬化物のガラス転移温度の好ましい下限は40℃、より好ましい下限は46℃である。
なお、本明細書において上記「ガラス転移温度」は、動的粘弾性測定により得られる損失正接(tanδ)の極大のうち、ミクロブラウン運動に起因する極大が現れる温度を意味する。上記ガラス転移温度は、粘弾性測定装置等を用いた従来公知の方法により測定することができる。
また、上記ガラス転移温度を測定する硬化物としては、上記貯蔵弾性率を測定する硬化物と同様にしてシール剤を硬化させたものが用いられる。
本発明の液晶表示素子としては、狭額縁設計の液晶表示素子が好ましい。具体的には、液晶表示部の周囲の枠部分の幅が2mm以下であることが好ましい。
また、本発明の液晶表示素子を製造する際の本発明の液晶表示素子用シール剤の塗布幅は1mm以下であることが好ましい。
まず、ITO薄膜等の電極付きのガラス基板やポリエチレンテレフタレート基板等の2枚の基板の一方に、本発明の液晶表示素子用シール剤を、スクリーン印刷、ディスペンサー塗布等により塗布して枠状のシールパターンを形成する工程を行う。次いで、本発明の液晶表示素子用シール剤が未硬化の状態で液晶の微小滴を基板のシールパターンの枠内に滴下塗布し、真空下で別の基板を重ね合わせる工程を行う。その後、本発明の液晶表示素子用シール剤のシールパターン部分に紫外線等の光を照射してシール剤を仮硬化させる工程、及び、仮硬化させたシール剤を加熱して本硬化させる工程を行う方法により、液晶表示素子を得ることができる。
撹拌羽、冷却管を取り付けたフラスコに、窒素フローを行いながらビスフェノールA型エポキシ樹脂(DIC社製、「EPICLON EXA-850CRP」)340.1g(1モル)及び1,6-ヘキサンジオール(東京化成工業社製)59.1g(0.5モル)を仕込み、150℃で撹拌し、溶解させた。その後、テトラメチルアンモニウムクロライド1.0gを添加し、150℃で6時間撹拌することによって変性エポキシ樹脂を得た。得られた変性エポキシ樹脂200gと、アクリル酸(東京化成工業社製)9.0g(0.13モル)と、ポリマー担持トリフェニルホスフィン(バイオタージ社製、「PS-Triphenylphosphine」)0.1gとを混合し、100℃で6時間反応させた。反応終了後、得られた樹脂をトルエンと水とで3回洗浄することにより、本発明にかかる重合性化合物Aを得た。
なお、得られた本発明にかかる重合性化合物Aは、GPC、1H-NMR、13C-NMR、及び、FT-IR分析により、下記式(10)で表される化合物(nは1以上3以下(平均値))であることを確認した。
撹拌羽、冷却管を取り付けたフラスコに、窒素フローを行いながらビスフェノールA(東京化成工業社製)228.3g(1モル)及び1,6-ヘキサンジオールジグリシジルエーテル(共栄社化学社製、「エポライト1600」)460g(2モル)を仕込み、150℃で撹拌し、溶解させた。その後、テトラメチルアンモニウムクロライド1.0gを添加し、150℃で6時間撹拌することによって変性エポキシ樹脂を得た。得られた変性エポキシ樹脂350gと、アクリル酸(東京化成工業社製)18.0g(0.25モル)と、ポリマー担持トリフェニルホスフィン(バイオタージ社製、「PS-Triphenylphosphine」)0.1gとを混合し、100℃で6時間反応させた。反応終了後、得られた樹脂をトルエンと水とで3回洗浄することにより、本発明にかかる重合性化合物Bを得た。
なお、得られた本発明にかかる重合性化合物Bは、GPC、1H-NMR、13C-NMR、及び、FT-IR分析により、下記式(11)で表される化合物(nは1以上3以下(平均値))であることを確認した。
撹拌羽、冷却管を取り付けたフラスコに、窒素フローを行いながらビスフェノールA(東京化成工業社製)228.3g(1モル)及びトリエチレングリコールジビニルエーテル(東京化成工業社製)175g(0.86モル)を仕込み、120℃で撹拌し、溶解させた。その後、6時間撹拌することによって多価フェノール樹脂を得た。得られた多価フェノール樹脂400gと、エピクロロヒドリン(東京化成工業社製)925g(10モル)と、n-ブタノール200gとを仕込み、溶解させた。その後、65℃に昇温し、共沸する圧力まで減圧し、水層を除去しながら反応を進めた。未反応のエピクロロヒドリンを減圧蒸留で留去した後、メチルイソブチルケトン1000gとn-ブタノール100gとを加えて撹拌し、更に10%水酸化ナトリウム水溶液を20g添加して、80℃で2時間反応させた。反応終了後、洗浄液が中性になるまで水で洗浄を行い、変性エポキシ樹脂を得た。得られた変性エポキシ樹脂350gと、アクリル酸(東京化成工業社製)72.06g(1モル)と、ポリマー担持トリフェニルホスフィン(バイオタージ社製、「PS-Triphenylphosphine」)0.1gとを混合し、100℃で6時間反応させた。反応終了後、得られた樹脂をトルエンと水とで3回洗浄することにより、本発明にかかる重合性化合物Cを得た。
なお、得られた本発明にかかる重合性化合物Cは、GPC、1H-NMR、13C-NMR、及び、FT-IR分析により、下記式(12)で表される化合物(mは1以上3以下(平均値))であることを確認した。
表1に記載された配合比に従い、各材料を遊星式撹拌機(シンキー社製、「あわとり練太郎」)を用いて混合した後、更に3本ロールを用いて混合することにより実施例1~7及び比較例1~3の液晶表示素子用シール剤を調製した。
実施例及び比較例で得られた液晶表示素子用シール剤について以下の評価を行った。結果を表1に示した。
また、マレイミド化合物として、上記式(9-3)で表される化合物に代えて上記式(8)におけるR6がヘキサメチレン基である化合物を用いたこと以外は、実施例1と同様にして液晶表示素子用シール剤を調製し、以下の評価を行ったところ、実施例1と同様の結果が得られた。
実施例及び比較例で得られた各液晶表示素子用シール剤をガラス基板上に約5μm塗布した後、同サイズのガラス基板を重ね合わせた。次いで、メタルハライドランプを用いて100mW/cm2の紫外線(波長365nm)を30秒照射した。赤外分光装置(BIORAD社製、「FTS3000」)を用い、(メタ)アクリロイル基由来ピークの光照射前後での変化量(減少率)を測定した。
光照射後の(メタ)アクリロイル基由来のピークの減少率が95%以上であった場合を「◎」、85%以上95%未満であった場合を「○」、75%以上85%未満であった場合を「△」、75%未満であった場合を「×」として硬化性を評価した。
実施例及び比較例で得られた各液晶表示素子用シール剤100重量部にスペーサー微粒子(積水化学工業社製、「ミクロパールSI-H050」)1重量部を分散させた。次いで、該スペーサー粒子を分散させたシール剤を2枚のラビング済み配向膜及び透明電極付き基板(長さ75mm、幅75mm、厚み0.7mm)の一方に、表示部が45mm×55mmとなるようにシール剤の線幅1mmでディスペンサー塗布した。続いて液晶(チッソ社製、「JC-5004LA」)の微小滴を透明電極付き基板のシール剤の枠内全面に滴下塗布し、すぐにもう一方の透明電極付き基板を貼り合わせた。その後、シール剤部分にメタルハライドランプを用いて100mW/cm2の紫外線(波長365nm)を30秒照射した後、120℃で1時間加熱することにより、実施例及び比較例で得られた各液晶表示素子用シール剤について、液晶表示素子をそれぞれ10枚(10セル)ずつ作製した。
各液晶表示素子を2mの高さから落下させる落下試験を行った。落下試験後、全てのセルに剥がれや割れによる液晶漏れがなかった場合を「◎」、1セル以上4セル未満の液晶表示素子に液晶漏れがあった場合を「○」、4セル以上7セル未満の液晶表示素子に液晶漏れがあった場合を「△」、7セル以上の液晶表示素子に液晶漏れがあった場合を「×」として接着性を評価した。
実施例及び比較例で得られた各液晶表示素子用シール剤を、平滑な離型フィルム状にコーターで厚さ200μm以上300μm以下に塗工した。次いで、塗工したシール剤にメタルハライドランプを用いて100mW/cm2の紫外線(波長365nm)を30秒照射した後、120℃で1時間加熱してシール剤を硬化させ、透湿度測定用硬化フィルムを得た。JIS Z 0208の防湿包装材料の透湿度試験方法(カップ法)に準じた方法で透湿度試験用カップを作製し、得られた透湿度測定用硬化フィルムを取り付け、温度60℃湿度90%RHの恒温恒湿オーブンに投入して透湿度を測定した。透湿度が30g/m2・24hr未満であった場合を「○」、30g/m2・24hr以上70g/m2・24hr未満であった場合を「△」、70g/m2・24hr以上であった場合を「×」として透湿防止性を評価した。
実施例及び比較例で得られた各液晶表示素子用シール剤について、上記「(接着性)」と同様にして液晶表示素子を作製した。
得られた液晶表示素子について、100時間動作試験を行った後、80℃で1000時間電圧印加状態とした後のシール剤付近の液晶配向乱れを目視によって確認した。
配向乱れは周辺部及び表示部の色むらにより判断しており、色むらが全くなかった場合を「○」、周辺部に少しの色むらが確認された場合を「△」、色むらが表示部へと広がっていた場合を「×」として低液晶汚染性を評価した。
Claims (9)
- 硬化性樹脂と、マレイミド化合物と、重合開始剤とを含有し、
前記硬化性樹脂は、重合性官能基とアルキレンオキサイド骨格と水酸基とを有する化合物を含有することを特徴とする液晶表示素子用シール剤。 - 重合性官能基とアルキレンオキサイド骨格と水酸基とを有する化合物は、1分子中に2個以上の重合性官能基を有することを特徴とする請求項1記載の液晶表示素子用シール剤。
- 前記重合性官能基は、(メタ)アクリロイル基及び/又はエポキシ基であることを特徴とする請求項1又は2記載の液晶表示素子用シール剤。
- 重合性官能基とアルキレンオキサイド骨格と水酸基とを有する化合物は、下記式(1-1)又は(1-2)で表される化合物であることを特徴とする請求項1又は2記載の液晶表示素子用シール剤。
式(1-2)中、A2は、下記式(4-1)~(4-7)で表される構造を表し、X2は、メチレン基、メチルメチレン基、ジメチルメチレン基、酸素原子、スルホニル基、カルボニル基、又は、結合手を表し、Y2は、下記式(5)で表される基を表し、mは、1以上3以下(平均値)である。
- マレイミド化合物は、1分子中に2個以上のマレイミド基を有することを特徴とする請求項1、2、3又は4記載の液晶表示素子用シール剤。
- マレイミド化合物は、炭素数5以上36以下の脂肪族炭化水素基を有することを特徴とする請求項1、2、3、4又は5記載の液晶表示素子用シール剤。
- 重合開始剤は、オキシムエステル系化合物を含有することを特徴とする請求項1、2、3、4、5又は6記載の液晶表示素子用シール剤。
- 請求項1、2、3、4、5、6又は7記載の液晶表示素子用シール剤と導電性微粒子とを含有することを特徴とする上下導通材料。
- 請求項1、2、3、4、5、6若しくは7記載の液晶表示素子用シール剤又は請求項8記載の上下導通材料を用いてなることを特徴とする液晶表示素子。
