Abstract

본 발명은 개선된 출력 특성을 가진 이차 전지를 개시한다. 본 발명에 따른 이차 전지는, 복수의 셀을 병렬 연결시킨 셀 조립체를 전해질과 함께 하나의 포장재 내에 수납하고 있는 이차 전지로서, 상기 셀 조립체의 중앙 부분에 배치된 복수의 중앙 셀들의 양극은 사이드 부분에 배치된 복수의 사이드 셀들의 양극보다 로딩 에너지 밀도가 크고, 상기 중앙 셀의 양극은 상기 사이드 셀의 양극보다 양극 표면에 형성된 양극재 코팅층이 더 두껍다. 바람직하게, 상기 사이드 셀들의 전체 저항은 상기 중앙 셀들의 전체 저항보다 작다.

Description

개선된 출력 특성을 가진 이차 전지
본 발명은 이차 전지에 관한 것으로서, 서로 다른 전기적 특성을 가진 이종 셀을 병렬 연결시킨 후 하나의 포장재 내에 포함시켜 출력 특성을 개선시킨 이차 전지에 관한 것이다.
본 발명은 2014년 12월 08자에 한국 특허청에 출원된 한국특허출원 제10-2014-0175296호와 2014년 12월 08자에 한국 특허청에 출원된 한국특허출원 제10-2014-0175288호에 대한 우선권을 주장하며, 상기 한국특허출원들의 내용은 본 명세서의 일부로서 합체될 수 있다.
리튬 이차 전지는 작동 전압과 에너지 밀도가 크고 출력 특성이 우수하여 전자 제품이나 전기 구동 장치의 에너지 원으로 널리 사용된다.
리튬 이차 전지는 셀 조립체 및 전해질과 이들을 밀봉 수납하며 전극 단자가 형성된 포장재를 포함한다.
셀 조립체는, 병렬 연결된 복수의 단위 셀을 포함하고, 각 단위 셀은 적어도 양극판 및 음극판과 이들 사이에 개재된 분리막을 포함한다.
양극판과 음극판에는 리튬 이온이 삽입 또는 방출될 수 있는 양극 활물질 코팅층과 음극 활물질 코팅층이 각각 구비된다. 양극 활물질 및 음극 활물질로는 대표적으로 리튬 금속 산화물 및 그라파이트가 사용된다.
리튬 이차 전지는 전통적으로 휴대폰, 랩탑 컴퓨터, 비디오 카메라, 전동 공구 등의 핸드 헬드 단말기에 주로 사용되었다.
하지만 최근에는 석유가 고갈됨에 따라 리튬 이차 전지의 적용 분야가 전기 구동 자동차까지 확대되고 있다. 전기 구동 자동차는, 전기 에너지에 의해 주행이 가능한 자동차로서, 전기 자동차(EV, Electric Vehicle), 하이브리드 자동차(HEV, Hybrid Electric Vehicle), 플러그인 하이브리드 자동차(PHEV, Plugin HEV) 등을 포함한다.
전기 구동 자동차에 적용되는 리튬 이차 전지는 출력과 에너지 밀도가 높아야 한다. 그래야만, 전기 구동 자동차의 우수한 주행 성능을 뒷받침하고 운행 거리 또한 증가시킬 수 있다.
리튬 이차 전지의 출력은 양극 활물질의 개선을 통해 향상시킬 수 있다.
일 예로, 한국 공개특허 제2014-0018542호에 개시된 발명은, 고SOC 구간에서 출력이 좋은 제1활물질과 저SOC 구간에서 출력이 좋은 제2활물질을 입자 수준에서 혼합시킨 혼합 양극재를 사용함으로써 리튬 이차 전지의 출력을 향상시킨다.
그런데, 입자 수준에서의 활물질 혼합은 각 활물질이 가지는 물리적 특성의 상이성으로 인해 활물질 코팅층의 미세 구조를 열화시킬 수 있다.
일 예로, 혼합 양극재를 구성하는 활물질들의 열 팽창 계수나 기계적 강도가 서로 다르면, 혼합 양극재를 양극판에 코팅하는 과정에서 입자 내부에 균열이 생기거나 입자가 파쇄될 수 있다.
또한, 혼합 양극재를 사용하여 출력 증가 효과를 얻기 위해서는 각 활물질 입자의 성상이나 크기 분포를 최적화시켜야 하는데 이 과정에서 상당한 시간과 비용이 소요된다.
한편, 한국공개 특허 제2014-0092554호는 서로 다른 전기적 특성을 가지는 이종 셀을 병렬 연결시켜 혼합 셀을 구성하고, 이 혼합 셀을 다시 직렬로 반복적으로 연결하여 전지 팩을 구성함으로써 전지 팩의 출력을 향상시키는 발명을 개시하고 있다.
그런데 상기 혼합 셀은 독립적으로 포장된 2개의 셀을 병렬 연결시킨 구조를 가진다. 이러한 경우, 어느 한 쪽 셀의 퇴화 속도가 빠르면 전지 팩의 수명이 빠르게 단축될 수 있다.
셀의 퇴화는, 주로 전해질에 포함된 리튬 이온이 부반응에 의해 소실되거나 양극 활물질 또는 음극 활물질의 구조 붕괴로부터 기인되는데, 2개의 셀이 독립적으로 포장되어 있으면 어느 한 쪽 셀의 퇴화를 보상하기 위해 셀들이 전기 화학적으로 상호 작용하는 것을 어렵게 만든다.
본 발명은 위와 같은 종래 기술의 배경하에 창안된 것으로서, 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도와 비면적 저항이 조절된 서로 다른 단위 셀을 최적화된 위치에 배치한 후 서로 병렬 연결시켜 하나의 포장재 내에 전해질과 함께 밀봉함으로써 출력 특성을 개선시킨 이차 전지를 제공하는데 그 목적이 있다.
상기 기술적 과제를 달성하기 위한 본 발명에 따른 출력 특성이 개선된 이차 전지는, 복수의 셀을 병렬 연결시킨 셀 조립체를 전해질과 함께 하나의 포장재 내에 수납하고 있는 이차 전지로서, 상기 셀 조립체의 중앙 부분에 배치된 복수의 중앙 셀들의 양극은 사이드 부분에 배치된 복수의 사이드 셀들의 양극보다 로딩 에너지 밀도가 크고, 상기 중앙 셀의 양극은 상기 사이드 셀의 양극보다 양극 표면에 형성된 양극재 코팅층이 더 두껍다.
바람직하게, 상기 사이드 셀들의 전체 저항은 상기 중앙 셀들의 전체 저항보다 작을 수 있다.
바람직하게, 상기 중앙 셀의 양극은 3.9-4.1mAh/cm2의 로딩 에너지 밀도를 가지고, 상기 사이드 셀의 양극은 1.6-1.8mAh/cm2의 로딩 에너지 밀도를 가질 수 있다.
일 측면에 따르면, 상기 중앙 셀의 양극과 상기 사이드 셀의 양극은 동일한 화학적 조성을 갖는 양극재 코팅층을 포함할 수 있다.
바람직하게, 상기 중앙 셀의 양극과 상기 사이드 셀의 양극은 각각 양극재 코팅층을 포함하고, 각각의 양극재 코팅층에 포함된 양극재 입자의 화학적 조성 및/또는 평균 입경은 실질적으로 동일할 수 있다.
바람직하게, 상기 중앙 셀의 양극과 상기 사이드 셀의 양극은 각각 양극재 코팅층을 포함하고, 각각의 양극재 코팅층에 포함된 도전재의 함량은 실질적으로 동일할 수 있다.
바람직하게, 상기 중앙 셀은 양극, 음극 및 그 사이에 개재된 다공질의 제1 전극 분리막을 포함하고, 상기 사이드 셀은 양극, 음극 및 그 사이에 개재된 다공질의 제2 전극 분리막을 포함하고, 상기 제1 전극 분리막과 상기 제2 전극 분리막은 저항이 실질적으로 동일할 수 있다.
다른 측면에 따르면, 상기 중앙 셀의 양극과 상기 사이드 셀의 양극은 각각 양극재 코팅층을 포함하고, 각각의 양극재 코팅층에 포함된 양극재 입자의 화학적 조성 및/또는 평균 입경은 서로 다를 수 있다.
바람직하게, 상기 중앙 셀의 양극은 제1양극재 입자와 도전재를 함유하는 제1양극재 코팅층을 포함하고, 상기 사이드 셀의 양극은 제2양극재 입자와 도전재를 함유하는 제2양극재 코팅층을 포함하고, 상기 제1양극재 입자의 평균 입경이 상기 제2양극재 입자의 평균 입경보다 클 수 있다.
대안적으로, 상기 중앙 셀의 양극은 제1양극재 입자와 도전재를 함유하고 있는 제1양극재 코팅층을 포함하고, 상기 사이드 셀의 양극은 제2양극재 입자와 도전재를 함유하고 있는 제2양극재 코팅층을 포함하고, 상기 제2양극재 코팅층이 상기 제1양극재 코팅층보다 더 많은 도전재를 함유할 수 있다.
대안적으로, 상기 중앙 셀은 양극, 음극 및 그 사이에 개재된 다공질의 제1분리막을 포함하고, 상기 사이드 셀은 양극, 음극 및 그 사이에 개재된 다공질의 제2분리막을 포함하고, 상기 제2분리막이 상기 제1분리막보다 저항이 낮을 수 있다.
바람직하게, 상기 중앙 부분과 상기 사이드 부분의 경계에는 중앙 셀의 음극 및 사이드 셀의 양극이 각각 배치되고, 상기 음극은 음극판 및 이것의 양쪽 표면에 각각 코팅된 내측 코팅층 및 외측 코팅층을 포함하고, 내측 코팅층은 상기 셀 조립체의 중심을 향해 배치되고 상기 외측 코팅층보다 더 두꺼울 수 있다.
대안적으로, 상기 중앙 부분과 상기 사이드 부분의 경계에는 중앙 셀의 양극 및 사이드 셀의 음극이 각각 배치되고, 상기 양극은 양극판 및 이것의 양쪽 표면에 각각 코팅된 내측 코팅층 및 외측 코팅층을 포함하고, 내측 코팅층은 상기 셀 조립체의 중심을 향해 배치되고 상기 외측 코팅층보다 더 두꺼운 수 있다. 바람직하게, 상기 사이드 셀들의 수가 상기 중앙 셀들의 수보다 많을 수 있다.
바람직하게, 상기 셀 조립체를 전해질과 함께 밀봉하는 포장재는 파우치 포장재일 수 있다.
본 발명에 따르면, 이차 전지의 단위 부피 당 에너지 밀도를 증가시킬 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 저항의 감소를 통해 출력을 개선할 수 있다.
또한, 하나의 포장재 내에서 중앙 부분과 사이드 부분에 배치되는 단위 셀의 특성을 다르게 조절함으로써 독립적으로 포장된 2개의 이차 전지를 병렬로 연결시킨 종래의 제품보다 출력 개선 효과가 우수한다.
또한, 서로 다른 출력 특성을 가진 단위 셀들이 하나의 포장재 내에 밀봉되어 있어 전기화학적 반응에 참여하는 화학종들을 서로 공유하게 되므로 특성이 다른 단위 셀들 간의 전기화학적 상호 작용이 가능하다.
따라서 어느 한 쪽 단위 셀의 근처에서 전해질의 성능이 저하되거나 리튬 이온과 같은 작동 이온의 농도가 감소하더라도 전해질과 작동 이온의 확산을 통해 전해액의 성능 저하와 작동 이온의 농도 감소가 보상되므로 이차전지의 출력 특성을 유지할 수 있고 이차전지의 열화 속도를 완화시킬 수 있다.
본 명세서에 첨부되는 다음의 도면들은 본 발명의 한 실시예를 예시하는 것이며, 후술하는 상세한 설명과 함께 본 발명의 기술사상을 더욱 이해시키는 역할을 하는 것이므로, 본 발명은 그러한 도면에 기재된 사항에만 한정되어 해석되어서는 아니 된다.

이하, 첨부된 도면을 참조하여 본 발명의 실시예를 설명하기로 한다. 이에 앞서, 본 명세서 및 청구범위에 사용된 용어나 단어는 통상적이거나 사전적인 의미로 한정해서 해석되어서는 아니 되며, 발명자는 그 자신의 출원을 가장 최선의 방법으로 설명하기 위해 용어의 개념을 적절하게 정의할 수 있다는 원칙에 입각하여 본 발명의 기술적 사상에 부합하는 의미와 개념으로 해석되어야만 한다. 따라서, 본 명세서에 기재된 실시예와 도면에 도시된 구성은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 불과할 뿐이고 본 발명의 기술적 사상을 모두 대변하는 것은 아니므로, 본 발명시점에 있어서 이들을 대체할 수 있는 다양한 균등물과 변형 예들이 있을 수 있음을 이해하여야 한다.
본 발명의 실시 예에서, 이차 전지는 리튬 이차 전지를 지칭한다. 리튬 이차 전지는 충전 또는 방전 시 리튬 이온이 양극 및 음극에 코팅된 활물질과 전기 화학적으로 반응을 하는 전지를 총칭한다.
하지만, 본 발명은 리튬 이차 전지 이외의 다른 전지에도 얼마든지 적용될 수 있음을 당업자는 이해할 것이다.
도 1은 본 발명에 실시예에 따른 개선된 출력 특성을 가진 이차 전지의 개략적인 구조를 나타낸 분해 사시도이고, 도 2는 도 1의 B-B'선에 따른 단면도이고, 도 3은 양극, 전극 분리막 및 음극이 순차적으로 적층된 구조를 모식적으로 나타낸 도면이다.
도 1 및 도 2를 참조하면, 본 발명에 따른 이차 전지(10)는, 셀 조립체(20)와 이것을 전해질과 함께 밀봉하는 파우치 포장재(40)를 포함한다.
상기 셀 조립체(20)는, 중앙 셀 블록(20a)과 그 양측에 배치된 사이드 셀 블록(20b)을 포함한다. 여기서, 상기 중앙 셀 블록(20a)과 상기 사이드 셀 블록(20b)은 서로 병렬 연결된다.
상기 중앙 셀 블록(20a)은 서로 병렬 연결된 복수의 중앙 셀(30)을 포함하고, 상기 사이드 셀 블록(20b)은 서로 병렬 연결된 복수의 사이드 셀(50)을 포함한다. 여기서, 상부와 하부에 있는 사이드 셀 블록(20b)에 포함된 사이드 셀(50)의 수는 서로 동일하거나 다를 수 있다.
상기 파우치 포장재(40)는 파우치 타입의 이차 전지에 널리 사용되는 포장재로서, 연성이 있는 얇은 금속 필름(예컨대, Al 필름)이 내수성이 있는 고분자 필름과 열접착 고분자 필름 사이에 라미네이팅된 구조를 가진다. 상기 파우치 포장재에 대해서는 널리 알려져 있으므로 자세한 설명은 생략하기로 한다.
상기 파우치 포장재(40)는 상부 덮개와 하부 덮개를 포함한다. 상기 상부 덮개와 하부 덮개의 가장 자리는 실링 공정에 의해 융착된다. 그리고, 상기 실링 공정이 진행되는 동안 상기 파우치 포장재(40) 내부로 전해질이 주입될 수 있다. 상기 상부 덮개와 상기 하부 덮개는 서로 분리되어 있을 수도 있고, 한 쪽 변이 서로 연결되어 있을 수도 있다.
한편, 본 발명은 셀 조립체(20)의 구조에 실질적 특징이 있다. 따라서, 파우치 포장재(40)는 셀 조립체(20)를 전해질과 함께 밀봉하는 포장재의 예시로서 이해할 필요가 있다. 따라서, 상기 파우치 포장재(40)는 본 발명이 속한 기술 분야에 공지된 다른 재질의 포장재로 대체가 가능하다.
도 3을 참조하면, 상기 중앙 셀(30)과 상기 사이드 셀(50)은 적어도 양극(31), 음극(32) 및 그 사이에 개재된 전극 분리막(33)을 포함한다.
상기 양극(31)은 Al 등의 금속으로 이루어진 양극판(34)의 양쪽 표면에 양극재 코팅층(35)이 형성된 구조를 가진다. 그리고, 상기 음극(32)은 Cu 등의 금속으로 이루어진 음극판(36)의 양쪽 표면에 음극재 코팅층(37)이 형성된 구조를 가진다. 대안적으로, 상기 양극재 코팅층(35)과 상기 음극재 코팅층(37)은 양극판(34) 및 음극판(36)의 어느 한 쪽 면에만 코팅될 수 있다.
상기 양극재 코팅층(35)은 리튬 이온이 삽입되거나 방출될 수 있는 양극 활물질 입자, 도전재 및 바인더를 포함할 수 있다.
일 예시로서, 상기 양극 활물질 입자는 LiMnO2, LiCoO2, LiFePO4, LiNixCoyMnzO2(x+y+z=1, x, y 및 z 중 적어도 하나는 0이 아님)등과 같은 리튬 금속 산화물 입자이고, 상기 도전재는 카본 블랙이고, 상기 바인더는 PVDF(폴리비닐리덴 플로라이드) 계열 고분자일 수 있다.
상기 음극재 코팅층(37)은 리튬 이온이 삽입되거나 방출될 수 있는 음극 활물질 입자, 도전재 및 바인더를 포함할 수 있다. 일 예시로서, 상기 음극 활물질 입자는 그라파이트 입자이고, 상기 도전재는 카본 블랙이고, 상기 바인더는 PVDF 계열 고분자 일 수 있다.
하지만, 본 발명은 양극 활물질, 음극 활물질, 도전재 및 바인더를 구성하는 물질의 종류에 의해 한정되지 않는다.
상기 전극 분리막(33)은 다공질의 고분자 필름, 예컨대 폴리올레핀 필름으로 이루어질 수 있다. 또한, 상기 전극 분리막(33)의 적어도 한 쪽 표면에는 무기물 입자의 코팅층이 구비될 수 있다. 상기 무기물 코팅층은 무기물 입자가 바인더에 의해 결합되면서 무기물 입자 사이에 인터스티셜 볼륨(interstitial volume)이 형성된 구조를 가진다.
상기 전극 분리막(33)의 구조는 PCT 공개 공보 WO/2006/025662에 개시되어 있고, 상기 PCT 공개 공보는 본 명세서의 일부로서 통합될 수 있다.
상기 무기물 입자는 Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT), Pb1 - xLaxZr1 - yTiyO3 (PLZT), PB(Mg3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PMN-PT), BaTiO3, hafnia (HfO2), SrTiO3, TiO2, Al2O3, ZrO2, SnO2, CeO2, MgO, CaO, ZnO 및 Y2O3로 이루어진 군에서 선택된 적어도 하나 이상의 물질을 포함할 수 있다.
상기 양극판(34) 및 상기 음극판(36)의 상단에는 각각 소정 길이만큼 연장되어 돌출된 양극 탭(38) 및 음극 탭(39)이 구비될 수 있다.
상기 셀 조립체(20)는 복수의 셀이 적층된 구조를 가지는데, 각 셀에 구비된 양극 탭(38) 및 상기 음극 탭(39)은 서로 결집된 후 용접될 수 있다(도 1의 A 및 B 참조). 또한, 결집 및 용접된 양극 탭(38)은 전도성이 있는 금속 재질의 양극 리드(11)와 다시 한번 용접되고, 결집 및 용접된 음극 탭(39) 또한 전도성이 있는 금속 재질의 음극 리드(12)와 다시 한번 용접된다. 그리고, 상기 양극 리드(11)와 상기 음극 리드(12)는 파우치 포장재(40)의 상부 덮개와 하부 덮개가 실링될 때 외부로 노출될 수 있다.
상기 양극 리드(11) 및 상기 음극 리드(12)의 중앙 부위에는 실링 테이프(15)가 부착되어 있을 수 있다. 상기 실링 테이프(15)는 상부 덮개 및 하부 덮개가 실링될 때 금속 재질로 이루어진 리드(11, 12) 부위의 접착 특성과 수분 침투에 대한 내성을 증가시킨다.
상기 셀 조립체(20)를 구성하는 복수의 셀들은 도 2에 도시된 것과 같이 셀 분리막(45)에 의해 서로 분리될 수 있다. 즉, 중앙 셀(30)들 사이의 경계, 사이드 셀(50)들 사이의 경계 및 중앙 셀(30)과 사이드 셀(50)의 경계에 셀 분리막(45)이 개재될 수 있다.
다음으로, 본 발명의 실시예를 구체적으로 설명하기에 앞서 이해의 편의를 위해 몇 가지 용어를 다음과 같이 정의한다.
[ 제1양극재 코팅층, 제2양극재 코팅층]
상기 중앙 셀(30) 및 상기 사이드 셀(50)의 양극에 각각 코팅된 양극 활물질 코팅층을 제1양극재 코팅층 및 제2양극재 코팅층이라고 명명한다.
[로딩 에너지 밀도]
로딩 에너지 밀도는 양극의 단위 면적(1cm2)에 형성된 활물질 코팅층이 이차 전지(10)의 충전 상태가 0-100%까지 변화되는 동안 리튬 이온과 반응(삽입 또는 탈리)할 수 있는 용량(capacity)을 의미하고, mAh/cm2 라는 단위를 가지는 수치로 표시할 수 있다.
양극이 특정한 수치의 로딩 에너지 밀도를 가진다는 서술은, 양극에 코팅되어 있는 활물질 코팅층이 해당 로딩 에너지 밀도를 가지는 것으로 해석될 수 있다.
[기준 셀]
양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도가 서로 다른 복수의 단위 셀들에 대해서 비면적 저항을 측정했을 때, 평균 비면적 저항을 가진 단위 셀을 기준 셀이라고 명명한다.
양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도는 양극에 코팅되는 활물질의 두께를 조절하는 것에 의해 변화시킬 수 있다.
구체적인 예로서, 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도가 1.0 내지 4.0mAh/cm2의 범위에서 변화되는 복수의 단위 셀들에 대해 비면적 저항을 측정하고, 평균 비면적 저항을 결정한다. 그런 다음, 양극이 평균 비면적 저항에 대응되는 로딩 에너지 밀도 값을 가지도록 단위 셀을 제작하고, 제작된 단위 셀을 기준 셀로 정의할 수 있다. 비면적 저항은 단위 셀의 충전 상태가 50%가 되었을 때 측정한다.
기준 셀의 결정을 위한 실험에서 사용되는 복수의 셀들은 양극과 음극에 동일한 종류의 활물질을 포함하고, 활물질 층의 두께가 서로 다르다. 예를 들어, 로딩 에너지 밀도가 큰 셀은 활물질의 코팅층이 두껍고, 반대로 로딩 에너지 밀도가 작은 셀은 활물질의 코팅층이 얇다.
이하, 상술한 정의를 바탕으로 본 발명의 실시예를 구체적으로 설명한다.
본 발명에 따르면, 중앙 셀(30)에 포함된 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도는 기준 셀의 양극이 가지는 로딩 에너지 밀도보다 크다. 또한, 사이드 셀(50)에 포함된 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도는 기준 셀의 양극이 가지는 로딩 에너지 밀도보다 작다.
즉, 중앙 셀(30)의 양극이 가지는 로딩 에너지 밀도가 사이드 셀(50)의 양극이 가지는 로딩 에너지 밀도보다 크다.
비제한적인 예시로서, 상기 중앙 셀(30)의 양극은 3.9-4.1mAh/cm2의 로딩 에너지 밀도를 가진다. 그리고, 상기 사이드 셀(50)의 양극은 1.6-1.8mAh/cm2의 로딩 에너지 밀도를 가진다. 또한, 이차 전지(10) 전체로서 볼 때 양극의 평균 로딩 에너지 밀도는 2.75-2.95mAh/cm2이 될 수 있다.
일 측면에서, 중앙 셀(30)과 사이드 셀(50)의 양극에 코팅된 양극재 코팅층은 상기와 같은 로딩 에너지 밀도 조건을 충족하기 위해 동일한 화학적 조성 및/또는 물리적 특성(평균 입경 등)을 갖는 양극재 입자를 함유하되 코팅층의 두께가 다를 수 있다.
다른 측면에서, 중앙 셀(30)과 사이드 셀(50)의 양극에 코팅된 양극재 코팅층은 실질적으로 동일한 함량의 도전재를 포함할 수 있다. 바람직하게, 사이드 셀(50)의 양극에 코팅된 양극재 코팅층이 중앙 셀(30)의 양극에 코팅된 양극재 코팅층보다 도전재 함량이 더 많을 수 있다.
또 다른 측면에서, 중앙 셀(30)과 사이드 셀(50)의 양극에 코팅된 양극재 코팅층은 서로 다른 화학적 조성 및/또는 물리적 특성(평균 입경 등)을 갖는 양극재 입자를 함유하되 코팅층의 두께가 다를 수 있다.
더욱 바람직하게, 상기 중앙 셀(30)의 양극에 형성된 제1양극재 코팅층은 상기 사이드 셀(50)의 양극에 형성된 제2양극재 코팅층보다 더 두꺼울 수 있다.
단위 면적에 코팅되는 양극재 코팅층이 두꺼우면 로딩 에너지 밀도가 증가될 수 있다.
한편, 양극 활물질의 성분이 동일하다면, 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도와 셀의 비면적 저항(Area Specific Impedance)은 서로 반비례한다. 즉, 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도가 크면 비면적 저항은 감소하고, 반대로 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도가 감소하면 비면적 저항은 증가한다.
상기 중앙 셀(30)은 기준 셀보다 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도가 크다. 따라서 상기 중앙 셀(30)은 비면적 저항이 기준 셀보다 작다. 또한, 상기 사이드 셀(50)은 기준 셀보다 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도가 작다. 따라서 사이드 셀(50)은 비면적 저항이 기준 셀보다 크다.
한편, 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도가 조절된 중앙 셀(30)과 사이드 셀(50)이 병렬 연결되면, 2개의 기준 셀을 병렬 연결했을 때보다 저항이 낮아진다.
일 예로, 기준 셀의 저항이 2mΩ이고 중앙 셀(30) 및 사이드 셀(50)의 저항이 각각 1 mΩ 및 3 mΩ이라고 가정해 보자.
일반적으로, 저항 R1 및 R2가 병렬 연결된 회로의 전체 저항은 다음 수학식 1에 의해 계산할 수 있다.

상기 수학식 1을 상기 가정에 적용하면, 2개의 기준 셀을 병렬 연결한 회로의 저항은 1mΩ(R1=R2=2mΩ)으로 계산되고, 중앙 셀(30) 및 사이드 셀(50)을 병렬 연결한 회로의 저항은 3/4mΩ(R1=1mΩ, R2=3mΩ)으로 계산된다.
이로부터, 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도가 조절된 중앙 셀(30)과 사이드 셀(50)이 병렬 연결되면, 2개의 기준 셀을 병렬 연결했을 때보다 저항이 낮아진다는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
한편, 이차 전지(10)의 출력은 사이드 셀(50)의 양극에 코팅된 양극재 코팅층과 선택적으로는 전극 분리막의 구성을 변화시켜 사이드 셀(50)들의 전체 저항이 중앙 셀(30)들의 전체 저항보다 낮아질 때 더욱 개선될 수 있다.
상기 사이드 셀(50)들의 전체 저항을 상기 중앙 셀(30)들의 전체 저항보다 상대적으로 낮추기 위한 일 예로서, 상기 사이드 셀(5)들의 총 수가 상기 중앙 셀(30)들의 총 수보다 클 수 있다.
상기 사이드 셀(50)들의 전체 저항을 상기 중앙 셀(30)들의 전체 저항보다 상대적으로 낮추기 위한 다른 예로서, 제2양극재 코팅층은 제1양극재 코팅층보다 양극재 입자의 평균 입경이 10-30% 더 작을 수 있다.
상기 사이드 셀의 양극에 코팅된 양극재의 평균 입경이 상대적으로 작으면, 입자 상호 간의 접촉 저항이 감소하고 리튬 이온이 양극재로부터 방출되거나 양극재로 흡수될 때 확산 거리가 감소함으로써 상기 사이드 셀(50)들의 전체 저항이 감소하게 된다.
상기 사이드 셀(50)들의 전체 저항을 상기 중앙 셀(30)들의 전체 저항보다 상대적으로 낮추기 위한 또 다른 예로, 제2양극재 코팅층은 도전재의 함량이 제1양극재 코팅층보다 10-30% 정도 더 클 수 있다. 도전재의 함량이 늘어나면 양극의 전도성이 향상되므로 상기 사이드 셀(50)들의 전체 저항이 상기 중앙 셀(30)들의 전체 저항보다 감소하게 된다.
상기 사이드 셀(50)들의 전체 저항을 상기 중앙 셀(30)들의 전체 저항보다 상대적으로 낮추기 위한 또 다른 예로, 사이드 셀(50)에 포함된 전극 분리막은 중앙 셀(30)에 포함된 전극 분리막보다 저항이 20-40% 정도 더 낮을 수 있다. 전극 분리막의 저항이 감소하면 리튬 이온의 이동 속도가 빨라지므로 상기 사이드 셀(50)들의 전체 저항이 상기 중앙 셀(30)들의 전체 저항보다 감소하게 된다.
여기서, 분리막의 저항은, 다공성 기재를 구성하는 물질의 종류를 다르게 하거나 다공성 기재의 두께, 기재 표면에 형성하는 무기물 코팅층의 두께, 무기물 입자의 종류, 무기물 입자의 직경 등에 의해 조절할 수 있다.
상기와 같이 사이드 셀(50)에 있어서 양극재 입자의 평균 입경이 감소하거나 도전재의 함량이 증가하거나 전극 분리막의 저항이 감소하면, 리튬 이온의 반응 키네틱스가 증가하므로 그 만큼 사이드 셀(50)들의 전체 저항이 감소됨으로써 이차 전지(10)의 출력이 개선될 수 있다.
한편, 본 발명에 따른 이차 전지(10)는 중앙 셀 블록(20a)과 사이드 셀 블록(20b)의 경계 부분에서 배치된 전극 구조에서도 또 다른 기술적 특징을 갖는다.
도 4는 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예에 따른 셀 조립체(20)의 구조를 보다 구체적으로 나타낸 단면도이고, 도 5는 도 4의 셀 조립체(20)의 구성 방법을 나타낸 공정 개념도이고, 도 6은 중앙 셀 블록(20a)과 사이드 셀 블록(20b) 사이의 경계에 배치된 전극의 구조를 부분적으로 나타낸 부분 단면도이다.
도 4를 참조하면, 도시된 셀 조립체(20)는 다수의 바이 셀들이 중앙 셀 블록(20a)과 사이드 셀 블록(20b)을 구성한다.
바이 셀은, 중앙에 양극 또는 음극이 위치하고 양측에는 중앙에 위치한 전극과 반대 극성을 가지는 전극이 위치하는 구조를 가진다.
바이 셀은 양극형 바이 셀(이하, C 셀)과 음극형 바이 셀(이하, A 셀)로 나뉜다. 전자는 가운데에 양극이 배치되고 양극의 양측에는 음극이 배치된 구조를 가진다. 반대로, 후자는 가운데에 음극이 배치되고, 음극의 양측에는 양극이 배치된 구조를 가진다.
중앙 셀 블록(20a)에 포함되어 있는 바이 셀의 수는 3개로서, 가운데 셀(④)은 양극/음극/양극의 구조를 가지므로 A 셀이고, 가운데 셀(④)의 좌측과 우측에 있는 셀(③ 및 ⑤)은 음극/양극/음극의 구조를 가지므로 C 셀이다.
또한, 사이드 셀 블록(20b)에 포함되어 있는 바이 셀의 수는 2개로서, 중앙 셀 블록(20b)에 인접한 셀(② 및 ⑥)은 A 셀이고, 외곽에 배치된 셀(① 및 ⑦)은 C 셀이다.
상기 셀 조립체(20)가 바이 셀에 의해 구성될 경우, 각 바이 셀은 2 장의 전극 분리막(80)을 포함한다. 그리고, 인접하는 바이 셀들은 셀 분리막(70)에 의해 분리된다.
상기 셀 분리막(70)은 상술한 전극 분리막(80)과 유사하게 다공성의 고분자 필름으로 이루어질 수 있고, 선택적으로는, 적어도 어느 한 쪽 표면에 무기물 코팅층이 구비될 수 있다. 바람직하게, 상기 셀 분리막(70)은 앞서 설명한 전극 분리막(33)과 동일한 사양을 가질 수 있다.
도 4에 도시된 셀 조립체(20)는 도 5에 도시된 스택 폴딩 공정에 의해 제조될 수 있다. 즉, 한 쪽 방향으로 연장된 띠 형상의 셀 분리막(70) 위에 바이 셀 구조를 가지는 ① 내지 ⑦번 셀을 배열한 후 셀 분리막(70)을 셀과 함께 한 쪽 방향으로 폴딩시키면 도 4에 도시된 셀 조립체(20)를 제조할 수 있다. 도면에서, 세로 점선은 셀 분리막(70)이 접히는 지점을 나타낸다.
한편, 상기 셀 조립체(20)에 있어서, 중앙 셀 블록(20a)의 가장 바깥 쪽에 위치한 최 외곽 셀의 음극은 중앙 셀 블록(20a)의 다른 지점에 배치된 음극과 다른 구조적 특징을 가질 수 있다.
구체적으로, 상기 셀 조립체(20)를 구성하는 셀들의 음극은 양면에 음극재 코팅층이 실질적으로 동일한 두께로 코팅되어 있다. 그런데, 상기 최 외곽 셀의 음극은 도 6에 도시된 바와 같이 음극재 코팅층이 비대칭적으로 코팅되어 있다.
즉, 음극판(36)을 기준으로 중앙 셀 블록(20a)의 중심에 더 가까운 음극재 코팅층을 내측 코팅층(80)이라 하고, 사이드 셀 블록(20b)에 더 가까운 음극재 코팅층을 외측 코팅층(90)이라고 정의하면, 내측 코팅층(80)이 외측 코팅층(90)보다 더 두껍다.
상기 내측 코팅층(80)은 중앙 셀 블록(20a)의 최 외곽 셀에 포함된 양극과 전기 화학적 반응을 일으키고, 상기 외부 코팅층(90)은 사이드 셀 블록(20b)의 최 외곽 셀에 포함된 양극과 전기 화학적 반응을 일으킨다.
그런데, 중앙 셀 블록(20a)의 최 외곽 셀에 포함된 양극에 형성된 활물질의 코팅층은 두껍고 사이드 셀 블록(20b)의 최 외곽 셀에 포함된 양극에 형성된 활물질의 코팅층은 얇다.
따라서, 상기와 같이 내부 코팅층(80)과 외부 코팅층(90)의 두께를 비대칭적으로 조절하면, 각 코팅층(80, 90)과 대향하는 양극 활물질 코팅층의 두께와 상응한 전지 구조 설계가 가능해 진다.
상술한 도 6의 구조적 특징은 중앙 셀 블록(20a)의 최 외곽에 위치한 전극이 양극일 경우도 유사하게 적용될 수 있다. 이 경우, 양극판의 양쪽 면에 형성된 양극재 코팅층 중에서 중앙 셀 블록(20a)의 중심에 더 가까운 내측의 양극재 코팅층이 사이드 셀 블록(20b)에 더 가까운 외측의 양극재 코팅층보다 더 두꺼울 수 있다.
한편, 본 발명에 있어서, 셀 분리막(70)은 연속적으로 연결되지 않을 수 있다. 즉, 인접하는 셀들 사이에 개재된 셀 분리막은 전극 분리막과 유사하게 서로 분리되어 있을 수 있다. 이 경우, 셀 조립체(20)는 셀과 셀 분리막의 교호 적층 공정에 의해 제조될 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명은 중앙 셀(30) 및 사이드 셀(50)이 바이 셀 구조를 가지는 경우에만 한정되지 않는다. 따라서, 중앙 셀(30) 및 사이드 셀(50)이 '양극/분리막/음극', '양극/분리막/음극/분리막/양극/분리막/음극' 등과 같이 셀의 최외곽에 반대 극성의 전극이 배치되는 풀 셀 구조를 가지는 경우도 본 발명의 범주에 포함될 수 있다.
< 실험예 >
이하에서는, 본 발명에 따른 이차 전지의 에너지 밀도와 출력 특성의 개선 효과를 검증하기 위하여 실시된 실험 결과를 개시한다.
본 실험 결과는 본 발명의 효과를 예시하기 위해 제공되는 것으로서 본 발명의 범위를 한정할 의도로 개시되는 것이 아님을 당업자는 이해할 것이다.
1. 실험예1
1.1. 비교예1 -1: 기준 이차 전지의 제작
먼저, 평균 입경이 10um인 LiNixCoyMnzO2 분말과 평균 입경이 10um인 그라파이트 분말을 각각 양극 활물질 및 음극 활물질로 선택하였다.
그런 다음, 양극재 코팅층에 포함되는 양극 활물질, 도전재(카본 블랙) 및 바인더(PVDF)의 함량이 90:5:5(중량비)가 되도록 원료 물질의 량을 조절하여 양극 슬러리를 만든 후 양극 슬러리를 Al 재질의 양극판의 양면에 코팅하고 코팅층을 건조 및 압착하여 양극을 제조하였다. 이 때, 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도가 2.4mAh/cm2가 되도록 코팅층의 두께를 조절하였다. 위와 같은 정도의 로딩 에너지 밀도는 PHEV용 이차 전지의 셀 사양에 해당한다(도 7의 A 참조). 또한, 음극 활물질, 도전재(카본 블랙) 및 바인더(PVDF)를 혼합하여 음극 슬러리를 만들고, 음극 슬러리를 Cu 재질의 음극판 양면에 코팅한 후 건조 및 압착하여 음극을 제조하였다. 이 때, 음극 코팅층의 두께는 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도에 상응하도록 적절하게 조절하였다.
이어서, 상기의 과정을 통해 준비된 양극 및 음극을 양극형 바이 셀(C 셀) 및 음극형 바이 셀(A 셀) 구조로 적층시켜 기준 셀로서 사용될 11개의 C 셀과 10개의 A 셀을 제작하였다.
바이 셀 제작 시 사용된 전극 분리막은, 두께가 16um이고 폴리에틸렌(PE)으로 이루어진 다공성 기재의 양쪽 표면에 평균 입경이 5um인 무기물 입자(Al2O3)를 바인더(PVDF)를 사용하여 5um의 두께로 코팅한 구조를 갖는다.
그 다음, 상기 전극 분리막과 재질이 동일하고 띠 형태로 연장된 셀 분리막 위에 11개의 C셀과 10개의 A 셀을 교호로 배열한 후 스택 폴딩하고, 전극 탭 용접 공정 및 전극 리드 용접 공정을 통해 셀 조립체를 완성하였다. 이렇게 완성된 셀 조립체는 21 개의 단위 셀을 포함한다.
그런 다음, 셀 조립체를 파우치 포장재의 상부 덮개와 하부 덮개 사이에 협지시킨 후 실링 공정과 전해질 주액 공정을 진행하여 도 1에 도시된 구조의 파우치 타입 이차 전지를 제작하였다.
상기 전해질 주액 공정에서 사용된 전해질로는, EC(EthyleneCarbonate)와 EMC(Ethyl Methyl Carbonate)가 3:7의 부피비로 혼합된 유기 용매에 리튬 염으로서 LiPF6가 첨가된 액상 전해질을 사용하였다.
비교예1-1에 따른 이차 전지의 두께와 단위 셀들의 총 면적은 각각 10.49mm 및 16129cm2으로 측정되었고, 단위 셀 1개에 대한 비면적 저항은 20.3Ωcm2로 측정되었고, 이차 전지의 저항은 1.30mΩ으로 측정되었고, 단위 부피 당 에너지 밀도는 347Wh/L로 측정되었다.
1.2. 실시예1 -1: 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도가 높은 이차 전지의 제조
비교예1-1과 동일하게 평균 입경이 10um인 LiNixCoyMnzO2 분말과 평균 입경이 10um인 그라파이트 분말을 각각 양극 활물질 및 음극 활물질로 선택하였다.
이어서, 비교예1-1과 유사한 공정을 진행하여 C 셀 5개와 A 셀 4개를 제작하였다. 각 셀의 제작 시 사용된 전극 분리막과 셀 분리막의 종류는 비교예1-1과 동일하다.
실시예1-1에서는, 셀 제작 시 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도가 3.8mAh/cm2가 되도록 양극 코팅층의 두께를 비교예보다 증가시켰다. 위와 같은 정도의 로딩 에너지 밀도는 EV용 이차 전지의 셀 사양에 해당한다(도 7의 B 참조). 또한, 음극 코팅층의 두께는 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도에 상응하도록 비교예1-1의 음극 코팅층보다 증가시켰다.
실시예1-1의 셀 조립체를 제조하는 공정은 비교예1-1과 동일하되 5개의 C 셀과 4개의 A 셀을 사용하여 C셀과 A 셀이 셀 분리막을 사이에 두고 C/A/C/A/C/A/C/A/C의 형태로 교호 적층될 수 있도록 하였다. 이렇게 적층된 셀 조립체는 9개의 단위 셀을 포함한다.
실시예1-1에 따른 이차 전지의 두께와 단위 셀들의 총 면적은 각각 6.54mm 및 6763.74cm2으로 측정되었고, 단위 셀 하나의 비면적 저항은 18.2Ωcm2로 측정되었고, 이차 전지의 저항은 2.69mΩ으로 측정되었다.
1.3. 실시예2 -1: 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도가 낮은 이차 전지의 제조
실시예1-1과 동일하게, 평균 입경이 10um인 LiNixCoyMnzO2 분말과 평균 입경이 10um인 그라파이트 분말을 각각 양극 활물질 및 음극 활물질로 선택하였다.
이어서, 비교예1-1과 유사한 공정을 진행하여 6개의 C 셀과 6개의 A 셀을 제작하였다. 셀의 제작 시 사용된 전극 분리막과 셀 분리막의 종류는 비교예1-1과 동일하다.
비교예1-1과의 차이점으로는, 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도가 1.67mAh/cm2가 되도록 양극 코팅층의 두께를 비교예1-1의 양극 코팅층보다 감소시켰다. 위와 같은 정도의 로딩 에너지 밀도는 HEV용 이차 전지의 셀 사양에 해당한다(도 7의 C 참조). 또한 음극 코팅층 두께는 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도에 상응하도록 비교예1-1의 음극 코팅층보다 감소시켰다. 또한, 양극 코팅층에 포함되는 양극 활물질, 도전재 및 바인더의 함량을 90:5:5(중량비)에서 88.5:8.5:3(중량비)으로 조절하여 도전재의 함량을 비교예1-1보다 상대적으로 증가시킴으로써 양극의 저항을 감소시켰다.
실시예2-1의 셀 조립체를 제조하는 공정은 비교예1-1과 동일하되 6개의 C 셀과 6개의 A 셀을 사용하여 C셀과 A 셀이 셀 분리막을 사이에 두고 C/A/C/A/C/A/C/A/C/A/C/A의 형태로 교호 적층될 수 있도록 하였다. 이렇게 적층된 셀 조립체는 12개의 단위 셀을 포함한다.
실시예2-1에 따른 이차 전지의 두께와 단위 셀들의 총 면적은 각각 3.95mm 및 9365.18cm2으로 측정되었고, 단위 셀 1개의 비면적 저항은 실시예1-1과 실질적으로 동일하게 18.2Ωcm2로 측정되었고, 이차 전지의 저항은 1.94mΩ으로 측정되었다.
1.4. 실시예3 -1: 본 발명에 따른 이차 전지의 제작
실시예 1-1과 동일하게, 평균 입경이 10um인 LiNixCoyMnzO2 분말과 평균 입경이 10um인 그라파이트 분말을 각각 양극 활물질 및 음극 활물질로 선택하였다.
이어서, 중앙 셀 블록 부분에 배치되는 5개의 C1 셀과 4개의 A1셀을 실시예1-1과 동일한 사양으로 제작하였다. 다만, 중앙 셀 블록의 가장 왼쪽과 오른쪽에 배치되는 C1 셀의 최 외곽 음극 코팅층의 두께를 도 6에 도시된 바와 같이 비대칭적으로 조절하였다. 그리고 사이드 셀 블록에 배치되는 6개의 C2 셀과 6개의 A2 셀을 실시예2-1과 동일한 사양으로 제작하였다. 여기서, 아래 첨자 1 및 2는 해당 셀이 각각 실시예1-1 및 실시예2-1과 동일한 사양으로 제작된 셀임을 나타낸다.
실시예3-1의 셀 조립체를 제조하는 공정은 비교예1-1과 동일하되, 셀 분리막을 사이에 두고 상기에서 제작된 4가지 타입의 셀들이 C2/A2/C2/A2/C2/A2/C'1/A1/C1/A1/C1/A1/C1/A1/C'1/A2/C2/A2/C2/A2/C2의 형태로 교호 적층될 수 있도록 하였다. 여기서, C'1은 중앙 셀 블록의 가장 왼쪽과 가장 오른쪽에 배치되는 C1 셀로서 최외곽에 위치하는 음극의 음극 코팅층이 비대칭적으로 형성된 셀을 나타낸다. 실시예3-1에 의해 제작된 셀 조립체는 비교예1-1의 이차 전지와 동일하게 21개의 단위 셀을 포함한다.
실시예3-1에 따른 이차 전지의 두께 및 단위 셀들의 총 면적은 각각 10.49mm 및 16129cm2으로 측정되었고 상기 비교예1-1에 따른 이차 전지의 두께 및 단위 셀들의 총 면적과 실질적으로 동일하다. 또한, 실시예3-1의 이차 전지에 대한 부피는 실시예1-1의 이차 전지 부피와 실시예2-1의 이차 전지 부피의 합과 실질적으로 대응된다.
반면, 실시예3-1의 이차 전지 저항은 1.13mΩ으로서 비교예보다 10.43% 정도 작게 측정되었고, 이차 전지의 에너지 밀도는 354.2Wh/L로서 비교예보다 1.97% 크게 측정되었다. 상기와 같이 저항이 감소하면, 이차 전지의 출력은 저항의 감소 정도에 비례하여 증가한다.
1.5. 실험예1의 평가
실시예3-1의 셀 조립체에 있어서, 중앙 셀의 양극은 사이드 셀의 양극보다 로딩 에너지 밀도가 크다.
또한, 사이드 셀들은 실시예2-1의 이차 전지에 포함된 셀들과 동일하고, 중앙 셀들은 실시예1-1의 이차 전지에 포함된 셀들과 동일하다.
따라서, 상기 사이드 셀들의 전체 저항은 실시예2-1의 이차 전지가 가지는 저항 값인 1.94mΩ과 실질적으로 동일하다. 또한, 상기 중앙 셀들의 전체 저항은 실시예1-1의 이차 전지가 가지는 저항 값인 2.69mΩ과 실질적으로 동일하다.
실시예 3-1의 이차 전지의 저항은 1.13mΩ으로서 부피와 두께가 동일한 비교예의 이차 전지보다 낮다. 이러한 결과는, 사이드 셀들의 전체 저항을 중앙 셀들의 전체 저항보다 낮추고 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도가 조절된 사이드 셀들과 중앙 셀들을 병렬 연결시킨 것에서 비롯된 것이다.
위 실험 결과를 통해, 셀 조립체의 사이드 부분에 배치되는 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도와 저항을 셀 조립체의 중앙 부분에 배치되는 양극보다 감소시키면 이차 전지의 전체 저항을 감소시켜 출력 특성을 개선할 수 있음을 알 수 있다.
2. 실험예2
2.1. 비교예1 -2: 기준 이차 전지의 제작
실험예1의 비교예1-1과 실질적으로 동일한 방법으로 기준 이차 전지를 제작하였다. 셀 조립체에는 11개의 C 셀과 10개의 A 셀을 포함시켰다. 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도는 코팅층의 두께를 조절하여 2.5mAh/cm2가 되게 하였다.
기준 이차 전지의 두께와 단위 셀들의 총 면적은 각각 10.50mm 및 16129cm2으로 측정되었고, 단위 셀 1개에 대한 비면적 저항은 22.5Ωcm2로 측정되었고, 이차 전지의 저항은 1.40mΩ으로 측정되었고, 단위 부피 당 에너지 밀도는 347Wh/L로 측정되었다.
도 8은 실험예 2에 있어서 단위 셀에 대해 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도에 따른 비면적 저항의 측정 결과를 보여주는 그래프이다. 비교예1-2로 제작된 단위 셀의 사양은 도 8의 A로 표시된 점에 해당하고 PHEV에 적합한 사양이다.
2.2. 실시예1 -2: 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도가 높은 이차 전지의 제조
실시예1-2에 따른 이차 전지는 실시예1-1과 동일한 공정을 진행하여 제작하였다. 셀 조립체는 셀 분리막을 사이에 두고 C 셀 4개와 A 셀 3개를 포함하는 총 7개의 셀을 C/A/C/A/C/A/C의 형태로 교호 적층시켜 제작하였다.
각 셀에 포함된 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도는 4.0mAh/cm2가 되도록 양극 코팅층의 두께를 비교예1-2보다 증가시켰다. 또한, 음극 코팅층의 두께도 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도에 맞게 비교예1-2보다 증가시켰다.
실시예1-2에 따른 이차 전지의 두께와 단위 셀들의 총 면적은 각각 5.135mm 및 5203cm2으로 측정되었고, 단위 셀 하나의 비면적 저항은 18.8Ω cm2으로 측정되었고, 이차 전지의 저항은 3.62mΩ으로 측정되었다.
실시예1-2로 제작된 단위 셀의 사양은 도 8의 B로 표시된 점에 해당하고 EV에 적합한 사양이다.
2.3. 실시예2 -2: 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도가 낮은 이차 전지의 제조
실시예2-2에 따른 이차 전지는 실시예2-1과 동일한 공정을 진행하여 제작하였다. 셀 조립체는 셀 분리막을 사이에 두고 C 셀 7개와 A 셀 7개를 포함하는 총 14개의 셀을 C/A/C/A/C/A/C/A/C/A/C/A/C/A의 형태로 교호 적층시켜 제작하였다. 양극과 음극의 코팅층을 구성하는 화학종의 종류, 평균 입경, 도전재의 함량 등은 실시예1-2와 동일하게 하였다. 이는 실시예2-1이 실시예1-1에 비해 양극 코팅층에 포함되는 도전재의 함량을 증가시킨 것과는 대조적이다.
각 셀에 포함된 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도는 1.8mAh/cm2가 되도록 양극 코팅층의 두께를 비교예2-2보다 감소시켰다. 또한, 음극 코팅층의 두께도 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도에 맞게 비교예2-2보다 감소시켰다.
실시예2-2에 따른 이차 전지의 두께와 단위 셀들의 총 면적은 각각 5.365mm 및 10926cm2으로 측정되었고, 단위 셀 하나의 비면적 저항은 24.6Ω cm2으로 측정되었고, 이차 전지의 저항은 2.25mΩ으로 측정되었다.
실시예2-2로 제작된 단위 셀의 사양은 도 8의 C로 표시된 점에 해당하고 HEV에 적합한 사양이다.
2.4. 실시예3 -2: 본 발명에 따른 이차 전지의 제작
중앙 셀 블록 부분에 배치되는 4개의 C1 셀과 3개의 A1 셀을 실시예2-1과 동일한 사양으로 제작하였다. 다만, 중앙 셀 블록의 가장 왼쪽과 가장 오른쪽에 배치되는 C1 셀의 최 외곽 음극 코팅층의 두께를 도 6에 도시된 것과 같이 비대칭적으로 조절하였다.
사이드 셀 블록에 배치되는 7개의 C2 셀과 7개의 A2 셀을 실시예2-2와 동일한 사양으로 제작하였다.
4가지 종류의 셀 C1, C2, A1 및 A2 셀에 있어서, 아래 첨자 1 및 2는 해당 셀이 각각 실시예1-2 및 실시예2-2와 동일한 사양으로 제작된 셀임을 나타낸다.
셀 조립체는 총 21개의 4가지 타입 셀들을 셀 분리막을 사이에 두고 C2/A2/C2/A2/C2/A2/C2/A2/C'1/A1/C1/A1/C1/A1/C'1/A2/C2/A2/C2/A2/C2의 형태로 교호 적층시켜 제작하였다. 여기서, C'1은 중앙 셀 블록의 가장 왼쪽과 오른쪽에 배치되는 C1 셀로서 최외곽에 위치하는 음극의 음극 코팅층이 비대칭적으로 형성된 셀을 나타낸다.
실시예3-2에 따른 이차 전지의 두께 및 단위 셀들의 총 면적은 각각 10.50mm 및 16129cm2으로 측정되었고 상기 비교예1-2에 따른 이차 전지의 두께 및 단위 셀들의 총 면적과 실질적으로 동일하다. 또한, 실시예3-2의 이차 전지에 대한 부피는 실시예1-2의 이차 전지 부피와 실시예2-2의 이차 전지 부피의 합과 실질적으로 대응된다.
반면, 실시예3-2의 이차 전지 저항은 1.39mΩ으로서 비교예1-2보다 -0.7% 정도 작게 측정되었고, 이차 전지의 에너지 밀도는 349Wh/L로서 비교예보다 0.5% 크게 측정되었다. 상기와 같이 저항이 감소하면, 이차 전지의 출력은 저항의 감소 정도에 비례하여 증가한다.
2.5. 실험예2의 평가
실시예3-2의 셀 조립체에 있어서, 중앙 셀의 양극은 사이드 셀의 양극보다 로딩 에너지 밀도가 크다. 또한, 사이드 셀들은 실시예2-2의 이차 전지에 포함된 셀들과 동일하고, 중앙 셀들은 실시예1-2의 이차 전지에 포함된 셀들과 동일하다.
따라서, 상기 사이드 셀들의 전체 저항은 실시예2-2의 이차 전지가 가지는 저항 값인 2.25mΩ과 실질적으로 동일하다. 또한, 상기 중앙 셀들의 전체 저항은 실시예1-2의 이차 전지가 가지는 저항 값인 3.62mΩ과 실질적으로 동일하다.
실시예 3-2의 이차 전지의 저항은 1.39mΩ으로서 부피와 두께가 동일한 비교예1-2의 이차 전지보다 낮다. 이러한 결과는, 사이드 셀들의 전체 저항을 중앙 셀들의 전체 저항보다 낮추고 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도가 조절된 사이드 셀들과 중앙 셀들을 병렬 연결시킨 것에서 비롯된 것이다.
위 실험예2를 통해, 양극재 코팅층의 두께 조절을 통해 셀 조립체의 중심부에 배치되는 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도를 사이드 부분에 배치되는 양극보다 증가시킴과 동시에 중앙 셀들의 전체 저항보다 사이드 셀들의 전체 저항을 작게 조절하면 이차 전지의 전체 저항을 감소시킴으로써 출력 특성을 개선할 수 있음을 알 수 있다.
상기의 실험예2에서 확인된 이차 전지의 저항과 에너지 밀도의 증가 정도는 실험예1에 비해 상대적으로 작다. 하지만 전기 구동 자동차에 탑재되는 대용량의 이차 전지 팩은 수십에서 수백 개의 이차 전지를 포함한다. 따라서 이차 전지 팩 단위에서는 에너지 밀도와 출력이 대폭으로 개선될 수 있다.
한편, 본 발명은 양극의 로딩 에너지 밀도가 다른 셀들이 하나의 포장재 내에서 전해질을 함께 공유하게 되므로 어느 한 종류의 셀들이나 전체 셀들 중 일부가 퇴화되더라도 다른 셀들에 의해 이차 전지의 성능을 유지할 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명에 따른 이차 전지에 있어서, 사이드 부분의 양극은 비면적 저항이 중앙 부분의 양극과 동일하거나 큰 수준이면서 중앙 부분보다 활물질 코팅층의 두께가 얇아서 리튬 이온이 이동하는 경로가 상대적으로 짧다. 따라서, 사이드 부분이 중앙 부분보다 리튬 이온의 흡수 또는 방출이 더 활발하게 진행된다. 이 때, 에너지 밀도가 높은 중앙부로부터 사이드 부분으로 리튬 이온의 보충이 신속하게 이루어짐으로써 이차 전지 내부에서 리튬 이온의 농도 편차가 발행하는 것을 빠르게 완화할 수 있어서 모든 셀들이 최적의 성능을 발휘하도록 할 수 있다.
또한, 이차 전지 내부에서 전해질의 성능이 저하된 영역이 생기더라도 인접 영역에서 전해질이 해당 영역으로 확산되기 때문에 전해질의 성능 저하를 보상할 수 있다. 따라서, 모든 셀들이 최적의 성능을 유지할 수 있고 이차 전지의 열화 속도를 완화할 수 있다.
이상에서 본 발명은 비록 한정된 실시예와 도면에 의해 설명되었으나, 본 발명은 이것에 의해 한정되지 않으며 본 발명이 속하는 기술분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자에 의해 본 발명의 기술사상과 아래에 기재될 특허청구범위의 균등범위 내에서 다양한 수정 및 변형이 가능함은 물론이다.
본 발명에 따르면, 이차 전지의 단위 부피 당 에너지 밀도를 증가시킬 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 저항의 감소를 통해 출력을 개선할 수 있다.
또한, 하나의 포장재 내에서 중앙 부분과 사이드 부분에 배치되는 단위 셀의 특성을 다르게 조절함으로써 독립적으로 포장된 2개의 이차 전지를 병렬로 연결시킨 종래의 제품보다 출력 개선 효과가 우수한다.
또한, 서로 다른 출력 특성을 가진 단위 셀들이 하나의 포장재 내에 밀봉되어 있어 전기화학적 반응에 참여하는 화학종들을 서로 공유하게 되므로 특성이 다른 단위 셀들 간의 전기화학적 상호 작용이 가능하다.
따라서 어느 한 쪽 단위 셀의 근처에서 전해질의 성능이 저하되거나 리튬 이온과 같은 작동 이온의 농도가 감소하더라도 전해질과 작동 이온의 확산을 통해 전해액의 성능 저하와 작동 이온의 농도 감소가 보상되므로 이차전지의 출력 특성을 유지할 수 있고 이차전지의 열화 속도를 완화시킬 수 있다.

Claims (12)

  1. 복수의 셀을 병렬 연결시킨 셀 조립체를 전해질과 함께 하나의 포장재 내에 수납하고 있는 이차 전지로서,
    상기 셀 조립체의 중앙 부분에 배치된 복수의 중앙 셀들의 양극은 사이드 부분에 배치된 복수의 사이드 셀들의 양극보다 로딩 에너지 밀도가 크고,
    상기 중앙 셀의 양극은 상기 사이드 셀의 양극보다 양극 표면에 형성된 양극재 코팅층이 더 두꺼운 것을 특징으로 하는 이차 전지.
  2. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 사이드 셀들의 전체 저항은 상기 중앙 셀들의 전체 저항보다 작은 것을 특징으로 하는 이차 전지.
  3. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 중앙 셀의 양극은 3.9-4.1mAh/cm2의 로딩 에너지 밀도를 가지고,
    상기 사이드 셀의 양극은 1.6-1.8mAh/cm2의 로딩 에너지 밀도를 가지는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차 전지.
  4. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 중앙 셀의 양극에 형성된 제1양극재 코팅층과 상기 사이드 셀의 양극에 형성된 제2양극재 코팅층은 화학적 조성과 평균 입경이 동일한 양극재 입자를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차 전지.
  5. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 중앙 셀의 양극에 형성된 제1양극재 코팅층과 상기 사이드 셀의 양극에 형성된 제2양극재 코팅층은 동일한 함량의 도전재를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차 전지.
  6. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 중앙 셀의 양극에 형성된 제1양극재 코팅층과 상기 사이드 셀의 양극에 형성된 제2양극재 코팅층은 서로 다른 화학적 조성을 갖는 양극재 입자를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차 전지.
  7. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 중앙 셀의 양극은 제1양극재 입자와 도전재를 함유하는 제1양극재 코팅층을 포함하고,
    상기 사이드 셀의 양극은 제2양극재 입자와 도전재를 함유하는 제2양극재 코팅층을 포함하고,
    상기 제1양극재 입자의 평균 입경이 상기 제2양극재 입자의 평균 입경보다 큰 것을 특징으로 하는 이차 전지.
  8. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 중앙 셀의 양극은 제1양극재 입자와 도전재를 함유하고 있는 제1양극재 코팅층을 포함하고,
    상기 사이드 셀의 양극은 제2양극재 입자와 도전재를 함유하고 있는 제2양극재 코팅층을 포함하고,
    상기 제2양극재 코팅층이 상기 제1양극재 코팅층보다 더 많은 도전재를 함유하고 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차 전지.
  9. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 중앙 셀은 양극, 음극 및 그 사이에 개재된 다공질의 제1분리막을 포함하고,
    상기 사이드 셀은 양극, 음극 및 그 사이에 개재된 다공질의 제2분리막을 포함하고,
    상기 제2분리막이 상기 제1분리막보다 저항이 낮은 것을 특징으로 하는 이차 전지.
  10. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 중앙 부분과 상기 사이드 부분의 경계에는 중앙 셀의 음극 및 사이드 셀의 양극이 각각 배치되고,
    상기 음극은 음극판 및 이것의 양쪽 표면에 각각 코팅된 내측 코팅층 및 외측 코팅층을 포함하고,
    내측 코팅층은 상기 셀 조립체의 중심을 향해 배치되고 상기 외측 코팅층보다 더 두꺼운 것을 특징으로 하는 이차 전지.
  11. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 중앙 부분과 상기 사이드 부분의 경계에는 중앙 셀의 양극 및 사이드 셀의 음극이 각각 배치되고,
    상기 양극은 양극판 및 이것의 양쪽 표면에 각각 코팅된 내측 코팅층 및 외측 코팅층을 포함하고,
    내측 코팅층은 상기 셀 조립체의 중심을 향해 배치되고 상기 외측 코팅층보다 더 두꺼운 것을 특징으로 하는 이차 전지.
  12. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 포장재는 파우치 포장재인 것을 특징으로 하는 이차 전지.
