Definitions
- the present invention relates to a compound, a polymer, a liquid crystal alignment film, a liquid crystal display element, and an optical anisotropic body. More specifically, a liquid crystal display element, a liquid crystal alignment film in the liquid crystal display element, a compound and a polymer for producing the liquid crystal alignment film, a liquid crystal display element, and an optical anisotropy used for optical compensation of the liquid crystal display element, etc.
- the present invention relates to an optical anisotropic body useful for a conductive film.
- a liquid crystal alignment film for aligning liquid crystal molecules is important for maintaining the order of alignment of liquid crystal molecules and expressing optical characteristics based on refractive index anisotropy of liquid crystal molecules, and constitutes a liquid crystal display element. Therefore, it is an essential component.
- the alignment of liquid crystal molecules has a great influence on the display characteristics, and various alignment methods have been studied, and can be broadly classified into a vertical alignment type and a horizontal alignment type.
- a liquid crystal display device using a vertically aligned liquid crystal layer (sometimes referred to as a VA mode liquid crystal display device) is widely used for displays because of its excellent display characteristics such as high contrast.
- the viewing angle characteristics are not always sufficient, and various methods are being studied for improvement.
- a multi-domain vertical alignment method (MVA method) in which a plurality of liquid crystal domains having different alignment directions are formed in each pixel (an alignment division structure is formed) has become common.
- the alignment division structure in order to form the alignment division structure, it is necessary to control the tilt alignment of the liquid crystal molecules.
- a slit (opening) or a rib (projection structure) is provided on the electrode. The method is used.
- the alignment regulation for liquid crystal molecules The force can be non-uniform within the pixel. For this reason, there exists a problem that distribution arises in a response speed. Furthermore, there is a problem in that the light transmittance of the region where the slits and ribs are provided is lowered, and the display luminance is lowered.
- an alignment division structure in the VA mode liquid crystal display device by controlling the tilt alignment by the alignment film.
- a film made of polyimide or the like is formed on a substrate, and the film is rubbed with a rubbing cloth to control the orientation direction and the pretilt angle. Is called.
- it is difficult to form a precise alignment division structure by the rubbing method and there is another problem of generation of static electricity and impurity components due to friction.
- an example of a liquid crystal display device using a horizontal alignment type liquid crystal layer is an IPS mode liquid crystal display device.
- IPS mode liquid crystal display devices are widely used in displays because they have small viewing angle dependency such as contrast and color and have excellent display characteristics.
- the pretilt angle is set to 1 degree or less on the electrode surface.
- a rubbing method is generally used as a method for imparting a force for controlling the tilt alignment for achieving horizontal alignment.
- the pretilt angle given to the liquid crystal molecules exceeds 1 degree, so that there is a problem that it is difficult to obtain the desired display characteristics.
- control of the alignment direction and the pretilt angle of the liquid crystal molecules using the alignment film is important for improving display characteristics in both the vertical alignment type and the horizontal alignment type.
- a photo-alignment method is known in addition to the rubbing method (see Patent Document 2).
- the photo-alignment method it is possible to easily form a precise alignment division structure by changing the light irradiation pattern, and the film can be subjected to alignment treatment in a non-contact manner, so that static electricity and impurities can be prevented. Occurrence is unlikely. Therefore, the photo-alignment method is expected to solve the above-described problems and improve display characteristics.
- Examples of materials that can be oriented by the photo-alignment method include photochemical compounds such as azobenzene derivatives having photochemically isomerizable sites (see Patent Document 3), cinnamic acid derivatives, coumarin derivatives, chalcone derivatives, and the like.
- a compound having an anisotropic photolysis such as a compound having a crosslinkable site (see Patent Documents 4, 5 and 6) and a polyimide derivative are known.
- the present invention provides a liquid crystal alignment film that can be easily formed, can efficiently impart alignment regulating force with a small amount of polarized light irradiation, and is excellent in control of alignment and pretilt angle of liquid crystal molecules, and is used for the same It is an object of the present invention to provide a compound and a polymer thereof.
- the present inventors applied polarized light to a film containing a polymer (polymer) having a structural unit derived from a specific compound having a cyano group at the terminal.
- the film cured by the irradiation was found to have a sufficient alignment regulating force and excellent in controlling the alignment of liquid crystal molecules and the pretilt angle, and the present invention was completed.

More specifically, two glass substrate with a liquid crystal alignment film are arranged so that the respective liquid crystal alignment films face each other and the direction irradiated with linearly polarized light is an anti-parallel direction, and between the two substrates. In a state where a constant gap (10 ⁇ m) was maintained, the peripheral part was pasted with a sealant. Next, in the cell gap defined by the liquid crystal alignment film surface and the sealing agent, the liquid crystal composition A or B is filled at a temperature just exceeding the clearing point, and then cooled to room temperature to produce a liquid crystal cell. did. The liquid crystal cell thus produced was used as an evaluation element. When the anchoring energy was measured according to the method shown below, it was 250 ⁇ J / m 2 .

It obtains the rotation angle of the photon and the angle between the twist angle phi 1.
- the twist angle ⁇ 1 was 1.12 °.
- the liquid crystal composition B was vacuum-filled instead of the liquid crystal composition A, and the twist angle of the liquid crystal cell heated and cooled in the same manner was determined.
- the twist angle ⁇ 2 of the liquid crystal cell filled with the liquid crystal composition A was 1.64 °.
- K 22 is the twist elastic modulus of the liquid crystal
- d is the cell gap
- p is the helical pitch of the chiral liquid crystal.
- Example 1 As described above, by using a compound having at least one cyano group at the molecular end of Example 1 (cinnamic acid derivative) and its polymer, it has a sufficiently large anchoring energy by irradiation with a small amount of linearly polarized light. It was confirmed that a liquid crystal alignment film can be formed. Such a liquid crystal alignment film is excellent in controlling the alignment and pretilt angle of the liquid crystal. On the other hand, in the compounds of Comparative Examples 1 to 3 having no cyano group and Comparative Examples using these polymers, only a liquid crystal alignment film having a lower anchoring energy than that of the Examples could be obtained.
- VHR voltage holding ratio
- Such an optical anisotropic body is useful in producing an optically anisotropic film that can be used for optical compensation and the like.
