 第4態様の記録テープカートリッジでは、ドライブ装置内で記録テープがケースから引き出されて、該ドライブ装置内のヘッドによって記録テープに対する情報の書き込み又は記録テープに書き込まれている情報の読み込みが行われる。そして、記録テープと共にリールに巻き回されているクリーニングテープが走行しつつヘッドに接触すると、該ヘッドがクリーニングされる。ここで、クリーニングテープと記録テープとの間に保護テープが介在され、この保護テープが1周以上リールに巻かれるので、クリーニングテープが記録テープの表面に接触することが防止される。これにより、ヘッドをクリーニングするクリーニングテープに対し記録テープが保護される。
 このように、第4態様の記録テープカートリッジでは、記録テープと共にリールに巻き回されたクリーニングテープから該記録テープを保護することができる。
 本発明の第5態様のテープ記録媒体は、第1態様のテープ記録媒体において、前記保護テープは、前記リールに巻き回された前記記録テープと前記クリーニングテープの間に介在して、前記記録テープと前記クリーニングテープが接触しない。
本発明の第6態様の情報記録システムは、第3態様の情報記録システムにおいて、前記保護テープは、一対のリールのどちらのリールに巻き回された場合も、前記記録テープと前記クリーニングテープの間に介在して、前記記録テープと前記クリーニングテープが接触しない。
上記第5及び第6態様によれば、保護テープによって、クリーニングテープと記録テープが接触することが防止される。これにより、ヘッドをクリーニングするクリーニングテープに対し記録テープが保護される。
 以上説明したように本発明に係るテープ記録媒体、情報記録システム、及び記録テープカートリッジは、記録テープと共にリールに巻き回されたクリーニングテープから該記録テープを保護することができるという優れた効果を有する。

 本発明の第1の実施形態に係る情報記録システム10について、図1~図4に基づいて説明する。なお、説明の便宜上、図2における矢印UPを上方向、矢印DNを下方向とする。
(情報記録システムの概略全体構成)
 図2に示される如く、情報記録システム10は、ケース12と、ケース12に内に収容された一対のリール14、16とを備えている。ケース12には、リール14、16をユーザ等が出し入れするための開口部が形成されておらず、リール14、16は、情報の記録又は再生時、保管時を含む常時、ケース12内に収容されている。
 リール14には、情報記録再生媒体としての磁気テープ等の記録テープTが繰り出し可能に巻き回されており、リール16には、記録テープTの端部が巻き取り可能に接続されている。情報記録システム10では、上下方向に沿った回転軸周りに回転するリール14から繰り出された記録テープTが上下方向に沿った回転軸周りに回転するリール16によって巻き取られ、またリール16からリール14に記録テープTが巻き戻されるようになっている。すなわち、リール14は、記録テープTの繰り出し用リールとされ、リール16は、記録テープTの巻き取り用のリールとされ、これらは記録テープT巻き方向が逆向きとされている。
 図3に示される如く、リール14、16は、ケース12内に設けられた回転部材14A、16Aに一体回転するように固定的に結合されている。なお、図3は、情報記録システム10の一部を模式的に示す断面図である。回転部材14A、16Aは、それぞれの直下に配置された図示しないモータに直結されており、後述する磁気ヘッド20を通過する記録テープTの走行速度が略一定となるように同期して回転駆動されるようになっている。
 また、図1、図3に示される如く、ケース12内には、複数のテープガイド18が設けられており、該複数のテープガイド18は、ケース12内において記録テープTの走行経路を規定している。ケース12内における複数のテープガイド18で規定された記録テープTの走行経路の中央部(隣り合う2つのテープガイド18間の部分)には、ヘッドとしての磁気ヘッド20が設けられている。磁気ヘッド20は、記録テープTに対する情報の記録(書き込み)、記録テープTに記録された情報の再生(読み取り)の少なくとも一方を行う構成とされている。
 この実施形態に係る情報記録システム10では、磁気ヘッド20は、上記走行経路を走行する記録テープTと摺接しつつ、該記録テープTへの情報の記録、該記録テープTに既得された情報の再生を行い得る構成とされている。以上により、情報記録システム10は、記録テープT(記録テープTが巻き回されたリール14、16)を交換することなく、内蔵した記録テープTの記録容量の範囲内で、該記録テープTに対する情報の記録、再生を行う構成とされている。
 このようにケース12に対し記録テープTの出し入れが行われない情報記録システム10では、図1に示される如く、ケース12内に磁気ヘッド20をクリーニングするためのクリーニングテープ22が記録テープTと共にリール14に巻き回されている。以下、具体的に説明する。
(クリーニングテープ及び保護テープ)
 図1には、一方のフランジ14Fを取り除いたリール14(後述するテープリールアセンブリ28)が斜視図にて示されている。この図に示される如く、クリーニングテープ22は、例えば接着等によって、一端部22Aがリール14のハブ14Bに固定的に保持され、所定のテープ繰り出し限で所要の張力に耐え得る接続状態とされている。したがって、記録テープTは直接的にはリール14のハブ14Bに接続されず、クリーニングテープ22を介してハブ14Bに接続されている。クリーニングテープ22は、走行しつつ磁気ヘッド20を擦る(摺接する)ことで磁気ヘッド20をクリーニングするべく、記録テープTに対し表面の凸凹が大きい構成とされている。
 クリーニングテープ22としては、例えば、記録テープTの材料と同じ材料を用い、該記録テープTを製造する際の平滑化処理工程であるカレンダー工程(以降の工程)を経ずに得たテープ等を採用することができる。このようにして得たクリーニングテープ22は、記録テープTと比べて表裏共に凸凹が大きい構成とされている。クリーニングテープ22は、例えば100m~数百m程度の長さを有している。なお、記録テープTの長さは数千m以上とされている。
 そして、情報記録システム10では、図1に示される如く、クリーニングテープ22と記録テープTとの間に保護テープとしてのバッファテープ24が設けられている。具体的には、バッファテープ24は、その長手方向の一端部24Aがスプライステープ26を介してクリーニングテープ22に固定的に接続されている。また、バッファテープ24は、その長手方向の他端部24Bがスプライステープ26を介して記録テープTに固定的に接続されている。
 このバッファテープ24としては、例えば、記録テープTと同じ材料を用い、該該記録テープTを製造する際のサーボ書き込み工程を経ずに得たテープなどを採用することができる。すなわち、バッファテープ24は、サーボの有無のみが記録テープTと異なる構成であっても良い。
 このバッファテープ24は、少なくともハブ14Bに巻き回されたクリーニングテープ22の外周に1周以上巻かれる長さLを有する。すなわち、図4Aに示される如く、ハブ14Bに巻き回された状態の最外層のクリーニングテープ22の径をD1とすると、
    L ≧ π × D1
とされている。これにより、記録テープTは、クリーニングテープ22と接触することなく、リール14のハブ14Bに対しバッファテープ24の外周に巻き回されるようになっている。
 さらに、バッファテープ24の長さLは、リール16のハブ16Bに巻き取られた記録テープTの外周にも1周以上巻かれるように決められている。すなわち、図4Bに示される如く、ハブ16Bに巻き取られた状態の最外層の記録テープTの径をD2とすると、
    L ≧ π × D2
とされている。これにより、クリーニングテープ22は、記録テープTと接触することなく、リール16のハブ16Bに対しバッファテープ24の外周に巻き取られるようになっている。なお、この実施形態では、径D2は径D1の2倍程度となっている。
 なお、バッファテープ24の長さLは、該バッファテープ24自体の長さと捉えても良く、両端のスプライステープ26の設置範囲を含む長さと捉えても良い。換言すれば、スプライステープ26を本発明における保護テープの一部として捉えても良い。この実施形態では、リール14及びリール16の少なくとも一方と、記録テープTと、クリーニングテープ22と、バッファテープ24(スプライステープ26)とが、本発明におけるテープ記録媒体としてのテープリールアセンブリ28とされている。
 次に、第1の実施形態の作用を説明する。
 上記構成の情報記録システム10では、記録テープTへの情報の記録、又は記録テープTからの情報の再生に際には、リール14、リール16が同期して回転駆動される。すると、記録テープTは、テープガイド18にて規定される走行経路を矢印A方向(図2参照9に走行し、磁気ヘッド20によって情報が書き込まれ、又は情報が読み取られる。
 この情報の書き込み、読み取りによって磁気ヘッド20は汚れる。この汚れを落とす要求があった場合には、クリーニングテープ22がリール14から繰り出されてリール16に巻き取られるようにリール14、16が同期して回転駆動される。すると、テープガイド18にて規定される走行経路をクリーニングテープ22が矢印A方向に走行し、この走行するクリーニングテープ22によって擦られた(摺接された)磁気ヘッド20がクリーニングされる。
 また、このクリーニングテープ22をリール14に巻き戻す際にも、クリーニングテープ22は矢印Aとは逆向きに走行し、この走行するクリーニングテープ22によって擦られた(摺接された)磁気ヘッド20がクリーニングされる。
 ここで、情報記録システム10では、リール14のハブ14Bに巻き回されたクリーニングテープ22と記録テープTとの間には、1周以上に亘りバッファテープ24が介在する。このため、記録テープTがクリーニングテープ22の表面に巻き圧を受けつつ接触することがない。すなわち、記録テープTは、クリーニングテープ22との間に介在するバッファテープ24によって、該クリーニングテープ22と接触しないように保護される。
 これにより、情報記録システム10では、ケース12内に一対のリール14、16、磁気ヘッド20が外部からのアクセス(出し入れを含む)ができないように設けられた構成において、磁気ヘッド20をクリーニングすることができる。
 また、情報記録システム10では、記録テープTがリール16のハブ16Bに巻き取られた場合においても、該記録テープTとクリーニングテープ22との間に1周以上に亘りバッファテープ24が介在する。このため、記録テープTがクリーニングテープ22と接触しながら該クリーニングテープ22から巻き圧を受けることがない。すなわち、記録テープTは、クリーニングテープ22との間に介在するバッファテープ24によって、該クリーニングテープ22と接触しないよう保護される。
 したがって、情報記録システム10では、記録テープTのリール14への巻き回し状態、リール16への巻き取り(リール14から繰り出し)状態、及びこれらの中間状態の何れにおいても、記録テープTが巻き圧を受けながらクリーニングテープ22に接触することがない。
 このように、本実施形態に係る情報記録システム10では、記録テープTと共にリール14、16に巻き回されたクリーニングテープ22から該記録テープTを保護することができる。
 なお、第1の実施形態では、クリーニングテープ22の端部が繰り出し側のリール14のハブ14Bに接続された例を示したが、本発明はこれに限定されず、例えば、記録テープTの一端部がリール14のハブ14Bに接続(保持)され、該記録テープTの他端部とクリーニングテープ22との間にバッファテープ24を介在させるように構成しても良い。
(第2の実施形態)
 次に、本発明の第2の実施形態に係る記録テープカートリッジ50について、図5に基づいて説明する。
 図5には、記録テープカートリッジ50の概略全体構成が斜視図にて示されている。この図に示される如く、記録テープカートリッジ50は、ケース52内に、記録テープTが巻き回された単一のリール54が回転可能に収容されて構成されている。ケース52には記録テープTを引き出すための開口52Aが形成されており、この開口52Aはドア56にて開閉されるようになっている。
 この記録テープカートリッジ50は、ドライブ装置に装填されると、ドア56によって閉じられていた開口52Aが開放され、該ドライブ装置内で記録テープTがケース52から引き出される構成とされている。ドライブ装置内に引き出された記録テープTは、該ドライブ装置を構成する図示しない巻き取りリールに巻き取られつつ走行し、ドライブ装置内の磁気ヘッドに摺接しつつ情報の記録又は再生が行われるようになっている。
 そして、リール54には、記録テープTと共にクリーニングテープ22、バッファテープ24が巻き回されている。この実施形態では、リール54の図示しないハブには記録テープTの端部が固定的に保持されており、該記録テープTの引き出し(繰り出し)端側にバッファテープ24を介してクリーニングテープ22が接続されている。
 具体的には、バッファテープ24は、一端部24Aにおいてスプライステープ26によって記録テープTの引き出し端が固定的に接続されており、他端部24Bにおいてスプライステープ26によってクリーニングテープ22の一端部が固定的に接続されている。この実施形態では、クリーニングテープ22の他端部には、ドライブ装置による記録テープTの引き出しの際に操作されるリーダ部材としてのリーダピン58が取り付けられている。
 このバッファテープ24は、少なくともリール54のハブに巻き回された記録テープTの外周に1周以上巻かれる長さLを有する。図示は省略するが、リール54のハブに巻き回された状態の最外層の記録テープTの径をD3とすると、
    L ≧ π × D3
とされている。これにより、クリーニングテープ22は、記録テープTと接触することなく、リール54のハブに対しバッファテープ24上(外周)に巻き回されるようになっている。
 さらに、バッファテープ24の長さLは、ドライブ装置の巻き取りリールのハブに巻き取られたクリーニングテープ22の外周にも1周以上巻かれるように決められている。この実施形態では、リール54とドライブ装置の巻き取りリールとは、ハブ径が同等程度とされている。このため、クリーニングテープ22(100m程度以上)と記録テープT(数千m以上)との長さ(巻き径)の関係から、上記したL ≧ π × D3を満たすことで、バッファテープ24の長さLは、ドライブ装置の巻き取りリールのハブに巻き取られたクリーニングテープ22の外周にも1周以上巻かれる長さが確保されている。
 なお、バッファテープ24の長さLは、該バッファテープ24自体の長さと捉えても良く、両端のスプライステープ26の設置範囲を含む長さと捉えても良い。換言すれば、スプライステープ26を本発明における保護テープの一部として捉えても良い。この実施形態では、リール54と、記録テープTと、クリーニングテープ22と、バッファテープ24(スプライステープ26)とが、本発明におけるテープ記録媒体としてのテープリールアセンブリ60とされている。
 次に、第2の実施形態の作用を説明する。
 記録テープカートリッジ50では、記録テープTへの情報の記録、又は記録テープTからの情報の再生に際には、ドライブ装置に装填される。すると、この装填動作に伴ってドア56が開口52Aを閉止する位置から開放する位置に移動され、かつ開口52Aの開放状態が維持される。ついで、ドライブ装置は、リーダピン58を把持しつつクリーニングテープ22の先端を巻き取りリールに導き、リーダピン58がセットされた巻き取りリールをリール54と同期して回転させる。
 これにより、クリーニングテープ22は、リール54から繰り出されると共にケース52からが引き出されつつ走行し、ドライブ装置の磁気ヘッドを擦りながらクリーニングする。クリーニングテープ22が磁気ヘッドを通過すると、記録テープTが磁気ヘッドと摺接して、情報の記録又は再生が果たされる。さらに、記録テープTをリール54に巻き戻す際にも、クリーニングテープ22は記録テープTの引き出し時とは逆向きに走行し、この走行するクリーニングテープ22によって擦られた(摺接された)磁気ヘッド20がクリーニングされる。
 ここで、記録テープカートリッジ50では、リール54のハブに巻き回されたクリーニングテープ22と記録テープTとの間には、1周以上に亘りバッファテープ24が介在する。このため、記録テープTがクリーニングテープ22と接触しながら該クリーニングテープ22より巻き圧を受けることがない。すなわち、記録テープTは、クリーニングテープ22との間に介在するバッファテープ24によって、該クリーニングテープ22と接触しないよう保護される。
 このように、本実施形態に係る記録テープカートリッジ50では、記録テープTと共にリール54に巻き回されたクリーニングテープ22から該記録テープTを保護することができる。
 また、記録テープカートリッジ50では、記録テープTがドライブ装置側の巻き取りリールのハブに巻き取られた場合においても、該記録テープTとクリーニングテープ22との間に1周以上に亘りバッファテープ24が介在される。このため、記録テープTがクリーニングテープ22の表面に巻き圧を受けつつ接触することがない。すなわち、記録テープTは、クリーニングテープ22との間に介在するバッファテープ24によって、該クリーニングテープ22と接触しないよう保護される。
 したがって、記録テープカートリッジ50では、記録テープTのリール54への巻き回し状態、ドライブ装置の巻き取りリールへの巻き取り(リール14から繰り出し)状態、及びこれらの中間状態の何れにおいても、記録テープTが巻き圧を受けながらクリーニングテープ22に接触することがない。
 なお、第2の実施形態では、クリーニングテープ22が記録テープTの引き出し端側に接続された例を示したが、本発明はこれに限定されず、例えば、クリーニングテープ22がリール54のハブに固定的に接続される構成としても良い。すなわち、記録テープTがクリーニングテープ22、バッファテープ24を介してリール54に保持される構成としても良い。

Claims (6)

  1.  リールと、
     リールに巻き回され、ヘッドに接触しながら情報が書き込み又は読み出しされる記録テープと、
     前記リールに巻き回され、前記ヘッドに接触しながら該ヘッドをクリーニングするクリーニングテープと、
     一端が前記記録テープの端部に接続されると共に、他端が前記クリーニングテープの端部に接続され、前記記録テープと前記クリーニングテープとが接触しないように前記リールに少なくとも1周巻かれる長さを有する保護テープと、
     を備えたテープ記録媒体。
  2.  ケースと、
     前記ケース内に設けられた一対のリールの回転によって該ケース内で走行され、該ケース内に設けられたヘッドに接触しながら該ヘッドによって情報の書き込み及び読み取りの少なくとも一方が行われる記録テープと、
     前記リールに巻き回され、前記ヘッドに接触しながら該ヘッドをクリーニングするクリーニングテープと、
     一端が前記記録テープの端部に接続されると共に、他端が前記クリーニングテープの端部に接続され、前記記録テープと前記クリーニングテープとが接触しないように前記一対のリールの少なくとも一方に少なくとも1周巻かれる長さを有する保護テープと、
     を備えた情報記録システム。
  3.  前記保護テープは、前記一対のうち一方のリールに巻かれる場合に、該一方のリールに少なくとも一周巻かれ、かつ、前記一対のうち他方のリールに巻かれる場合に、該他方のリールに少なくとも一周巻かれる長さを有する請求項2記載の情報記録システム。
  4.  ケースと、
     前記ケース内に前記リールが回転可能に設けられた請求項1記載のテープ記録媒体と、
     前記記録テープ又は前記クリーニングテープの端部に設けられ、前記ケース内から前記記録テープ及び前記クリーニングテープを引き出すためのリーダ部材と、
     備えた記録テープカートリッジ。
  5.  前記保護テープは、前記リールに巻き回された前記記録テープと前記クリーニングテープの間に介在して、前記記録テープと前記クリーニングテープが接触しない、請求項1に記載のテープ記録媒体。
  6. 前記保護テープは、一対のリールのどちらのリールに巻き回された場合も、前記記録テープと前記クリーニングテープの間に介在して、前記記録テープと前記クリーニングテープが接触しない、請求項3に記載の情報記録システム。
