 気体,液体及び固体を分析する装置として,質量分析装置が知られている。特に,気体を分析する質量分析装置として,真空系を用いたものが知られている。気体分析用の質量分析装置を用いれば,対象となるガスに含まれる物質を分析することができる。しかしながら,質量分析装置は,高い真空度を維持する必要がある。このため,直接大気を質量分析装置に導入すると,分析精度が悪くなり,さらに真空装置内が汚染されることとなる。
 特開2008-224246号公報(特許文献1)には,粒子質量分析方法が開示されている。また,特開平7-55689号公報(特許文献2)には粒子質量分析装置が開示されている。これらの文献に開示されている粒子質量分析装置は,エアロゾル取り入れ管を通してエアロゾルを導入し,複数種類の粒子が浮遊する気体を,所定範囲の比質量(粒子の質量/電荷)を有する粒子ごとに分級し,その上で粒子質量分布を得るものである。

 しかしながら,これらの粒子質量分析装置を用いても,大気を効果的に分析することはできない。それは,大気は粉塵を多くむため,粒子質量分析装置に大気を導入すると,真空チャンバ内を汚染し,分析精度が悪くなると共に,差動排気に用いられる小穴(オリフィス)が閉塞することにより安定に質量分析装置を稼動することが困難となる。粉塵を真空中に持ち込まない方法として,真空チャンバの前段にフィルタを装着する方法がある。しかし,微細なフィルタを用いた場合,粉塵のみならず,分析対象となるガスもフィルタ内に吸着されることがあるため,微細なフィルタを装着した質量分析装置は,リアルタイム分析には不向きである。一方、粗いフィルタでは微粉末を除去することができない。
 この場合,粒子質量分析装置のエアロゾル取り入れ管の前に,低真空用チャンバ及び中真空用チャンバをタンデムに接続して,差動排気し,徐々に真空度を高めた後に,質量分析装置にガスを導入することも考えられる。しかしながら,そのような差動排気系は装置が大掛かりとなる。
 そこで本発明は,大気圧下の分析対象系を分析でき,しかも小型である質量分析システムを提供することを目的とする。
 本発明は,基本的には,質量分析装置にサイクロンセパレータを組み合わせることで,粉塵を除去し,さらに圧力を十分に低減したガスを質量分析装置に導入することができるという知見に基づく。特に,ターボブレード17と中空モータ19を組み合わせた旋回発生装置13を用いることで,質量分析装置に直接導入してもよい状況に大気を調整することができるという知見に基づく。
 本発明の第1の側面は,サイクロンセパレータ1と,サイクロンセパレータ1に取り付けられた分析装置導入口3と,分析装置導入口3を介してサイクロンセパレータ1と接続された質量分析装置5とを含んだ質量分析システム7に関する。
 そして,サイクロンセパレータ1は,旋回発生容器9と,旋回発生容器9に取り付けられ旋回発生容器9内にガスを取り込むための吸気口11と,旋回発生容器9内に取り込まれたガスを旋回させるための旋回発生装置13と,旋回発生容器9内に取り込まれたガスのうち旋回分離されたガスを排気するための排気口15と,を有する。そして,質量分析装置5は,真空系を有する。
 旋回発生装置13は,ターボブレード17と,ターボブレード17を回転駆動する中空モータ19とを含む。ターボブレード17は,ターボブレード17の回転中心が,分析装置導入口3と同一軸上となるように設けられる。ターボブレード17と中空モータ19を組み合わせた旋回発生装置13を用いることで,質量分析装置5に直接導入してもよい状況に大気の圧力を調整することができる。すなわち,このような構成を採用することにより,本発明の質量分析システムは,粉塵を除去し,さらに圧力を十分に低減したガスを質量分析装置5に導入することができる。
 本発明の第2の側面は,ガスに含まれる物質を分析する方法に関する。この方法は,サイクロンセパレータ1により,ガスに含まれる気体を旋回分離する工程と,旋回分離されたガスを質量分析装置5に導入する工程と,質量分析装置5に導入されたガスに含まれる物質の質量を分析する工程と,を含む。
 旋回分離する工程は,ガスに含まれる気体を旋回させつつ,エレクトロ・スプレーや放電イオン化等の大気圧下でイオン化が可能なイオン源部分を旋回ガス中に置くことにより,ガスに含まれる気体をイオン化し,サイクロンセパレータ1の中心部にイオン化された気体を集める工程を含む。
 旋回分離されたガスを質量分析装置5に導入する工程は,旋回分離する工程により,圧力が低い状態とされたガスであって,サイクロンセパレータ1の中心部に集められイオン化された気体を,質量分析装置5に導入する工程である。
 本発明は,質量分析装置にサイクロンセパレータを組み合わせることで,サイクロンセパレータにより粉塵を除去し,さらにサイクロンセパレータ内の圧力が十分に低減した領域にあるガスを質量分析装置に導入することができる。これにより,大気圧下の分析対象系を分析できる。しかも,差動排気をするためのポンプが不要であるため,質量分析装置を小型にすることができる。このため,本発明によれば,従来の質量分析装置では考えられなかった,携帯可能な大気用質量分析装置をも提供できることとなった。

 図1は,本発明の質量分析システムの構成を示す概略図である。図1に示されるとおり,本発明の質量分析システムは,サイクロンセパレータ1と,分析装置導入口3と,質量分析装置5とを含む。本発明の質量分析システムは,サイクロンセパレータ1に取り付けられた分析装置導入口3を介して,サイクロンセパレータ1と質量分析装置5が接続されている。
 図1に示されるように,サイクロンセパレータ1は,旋回発生容器9と,吸気口11と,旋回発生装置13と,排気口15とを含む。
 旋回発生容器9は,その内部で気体が旋回する容器である。旋回発生容器9内に液体や固体がある場合は,旋回発生容器9は,それらも合わせて旋回するものであってもよい。旋回発生容器9は,サイクロンセパレータに用いられているものを利用することができる。具体的な旋回発生容器9は,図1に示されるとおり,下方に進むにしたがって,直径が小さくなる逆円錐台状の内壁を有するものである。旋回発生容器9は,真空チャンバと同じ素材で製造することができる。なお,旋回発生容器9は,蓋部により密閉されるものが好ましい。
 吸気口11は,旋回発生容器9に取り付けられており,旋回発生容器9内にガスを取り込むことができるようにされている。吸気口11は,旋回発生容器9の上部に設けられることが好ましい。吸気口11は,旋回発生容器9に1つ取り付けられていてもよいし,2つ,またはそれ以上設けられていてもよい。複数個の吸気口11が旋回発生容器9に取り付けられる場合は,旋回発生容器9を介して対称となる位置に吸気口11が設置されることが好ましい。吸気口11の吸気部分には,適宜フィルタが設けられてもよい。吸気口11がフィルタを有することで,比較的大きなごみを除去することができる。これにより,大きな物体や生物(たとえば昆虫)が,旋回発生容器9に入り込む事態を防止できる。吸気口11は,断面が円状の管であってもよい。その場合,断面の直径として,1cm以上10cm以下があげられる。
 旋回発生装置13は,旋回発生容器9内に取り込まれたガスを旋回させるための手段である。なお,旋回発生容器9内に液体や固体がある場合は,それらも合わせて旋回させるものであってもよい。旋回発生装置13は,ターボブレード17と,ターボブレード17を回転駆動する中空モータ19とを含むものがあげられる。そして,ターボブレード17は,ターボブレード17の回転中心が,分析装置導入口3と同一軸上となるように設けられる。ターボブレード17は,特許第3637021号公報に開示されるとおり,すでに知られている。図2は,本発明のターボブレードの例を示す図である。図2に示されるとおり,本発明のターボブレード17は,円板状の回転基板31と,回転基板31上に設けられた複数の羽33を有する。この複数の羽は,回転基板の中心に対して対称に設けられる。旋回発生容器9内にらせん状の気流を形成するため,複数の羽は,放射状ではなく,所定方向に湾曲しているものが好ましい。また,図2に示されるとおり,複数の羽は,回転基板の中心に近づくほど基板からの高さが高くなる部分を含むものが好ましい。ターボブレード17がこのような形状を有しているため,旋回発生容器9内にらせん状の気流を効果的に発生させることができる。本発明のターボブレード17は,基板中心に穴部が設けられているものが好ましい。そして,この穴部を有する基板の穴部に分析装置導入口3が設置されることが好ましい。基板の穴の大きさの例は,直径0.1mm以上10mm以下であり,0.4mm以上2mm以下でもよい。また,ターボブレード17と,旋回発生容器9との隙間を介して,旋回分離されたガスを排出口へと誘導できる。中空モータ19は,中空の貫通孔を有するモータである。本発明の質量分析システム7は,この貫通孔内部に分析装置導入口3が設置されることが好ましい。貫通孔の例は,直径0.1mm以上10mm以下であり,0.4mm以上2mm以下でもよい。中空モータ19の回転速度の例は,40,000rpm以上があげられる。
 排気口15は,旋回発生容器9内に取り込まれたガスのうち旋回分離されたガスを排気するための部分である。なお,旋回発生容器9内に,液体や固体がある場合は,排気口15はそれらを排出するためのものである。すなわち,排気口は,排出口として機能するものである。
 分析装置導入口3は,サイクロンセパレータ1と質量分析装置5とを接続する部位である。分析装置導入口3の例は,オリフィスを有するガス管である。分析装置導入口3は,ターボブレード17の基板中心に設けられた穴及び中空モータ19の貫通孔を介して,サイクロンセパレータ内のガスを質量分析装置5内に導入できるようにされていればよい。
 そして,本発明の質量分析装置5は,真空系を有する質量分析装置である。本発明は,質量分析装置としてすでに知られた様々な質量分析装置を用いることができる。質量分析装置の例は,飛行時間型,イオントラップ型,四重極型,FT-ICR型,磁場型,IMS(イオンモビリティ)型である。本発明は,これらの中では,飛行時間型質量分析装置を特に好ましく用いることができる。真空系を有する質量分析装置5では,チャンバ内を高真空に維持する。そのため,大気中に含まれるガスを直接分析することは困難である。本発明では,サイクロンセパレータ1を用いて粉塵を除去し,気体の旋回中心で圧力が低くなった部分を質量分析装置5に導入することで,簡単な装置にもかかわらず,大気圧下のガスを導入でき,さらに成分分析を行うことができる。
 質量分析装置の好ましい例は,特許第4208674号公報,特開2005-79049号公報,又は特開平11-135060号公報に開示された質量分析装置である。質量分析装置の例は,「複数の扇形電場によって構成された閉軌道に,イオンを打ち込むための入射軌道とイオンを取り出すための出射軌道を設けた飛行時間型質量分析計」である。通常飛行時間型質量分析計は,複数の真空チャンバと,複数のポンプを含み,1m以上の大きさを有する。よって,通常,飛行時間型質量分析計は研究室に設置されるものである。上記の公報に開示された飛行時間型質量分析計は,携帯できるほど小型化することができる。よって,本発明の質量分析システムに組み合わせることで,携帯できる質量分析システムとして利用できることとなる。これにより,気体を採取して,研究室で気体を分析する必要がなくなる。具体的に説明すると,たとえば,観測地点に本発明の質量分析システムを持参することで,リアルタイムに現地の大気を分析できることとなる。
 図3は,イオン化部とガイドワイヤとを有する質量分析システムを示す概略図である。図3に示すとおり,この質量分析システム7は,イオン化部21とガイドワイヤ23とを有する。そして,イオン化部21は,旋回発生容器9内に設けられ,旋回発生容器9内に取り込まれたガスをイオン化するためのものである。イオン化部21は,旋回発生容器9内に取り込まれたガスをイオン化できるものであれば,既に知られたものを用いることができる。具体的なイオン化方法の例は,大気圧イオン化法,エレクトロスプレーイオン化法,高速原子衝撃法,電子イオン化法,化学イオン化法,電解脱離イオン化法,及び電解イオン化法である。本発明では,帯電した対象ガス分子をガイドワイヤ23に引き寄せることを目的とするものであるため,イオン化方法として,大気圧イオン化法,又はエレクトロスプレーイオン化法が好ましい。
 ガイドワイヤ23は,旋回発生容器9内であって,分析装置導入口3と同一軸上となるように設けられ,イオン化部21によりイオン化したガスを引き寄せるためのものである。このため,ガイドワイヤ23は,帯電する性質のものであることが好ましい。また,質量分析システム7は,ガイドワイヤ23に電位を与えるための電圧源を有することが好ましい。
 質量分析システム7の好ましい別の態様は,旋回発生容器9内に放電部25を有するものである。
 次に,本発明の質量分析システム7の動作例を説明する。図4は,本発明の質量分析システムが動作している様子を示す概念図である。本発明の質量分析システム7は,ガスに含まれる物質を分析する方法に利用できる。そして,サイクロンセパレータ1により,ガスに含まれる気体を旋回分離する工程と,旋回分離されたガスを質量分析装置5に導入する工程と,質量分析装置5に導入されたガスに含まれる物質の質量を分析する工程とを含む。
 サイクロンセパレータ1により,ガスに含まれる気体を旋回分離する工程について説明する。ガスの例は大気である。本明細書におけるガスは,気体のみならず,大気のように微粉末などの固体を含むものであってもよい。旋回発生容器9内は,ターボブレード17が回転し,図3に示されるように,らせん状の気流が発生する状態となっている。そして,吸気口11からガスが旋回発生容器9に導入される。すると,導入されたガスは旋回運動をしながら下方へと進む。この際に,重い物質は遠心力を強く受けるため,大きな旋回運動を行う。一方,軽い物質は遠心力を強く受けないため,比較的小さな旋回運動を行う。このようにして遠心力により,重い物質は外側に分離され,軽い物質は重い物質の内部へと分離される。このようにして,ガスが比重により遠心分離される。比重が重いガスは,排気口15へと導かれ,排気される。一方,ガスが下方に進むにつれ,旋回運動が激しくなる。この結果,サイクロンセパレータ1の下方中心部には,減圧域が生じる。すなわち,旋回分離する工程により,比重が軽いガスはサイクロンセパレータ1の中心部に集められ,圧力が低い状態とされる。図中符号2は,減圧域を示す。本発明の質量分析システム7は,サイクロンセパレータ1を用いることで,その中心部分に減圧域2が生ずる。特に減圧域2のうち,質量分析装置側の部分は,低真空状態となる。
 なお,イオン化部21とガイドワイヤ23を含む質量分析システム7は,旋回発生容器9内に含まれるガスをイオン化する。イオン化により帯電した電荷と逆の電荷をガイドワイヤ23に付与する。たとえば,ガスをマイナスイオン化した場合は,ガイドワイヤ23を正に帯電させる。すると,イオン化されたガスは,ガイドワイヤ23に引き寄せられ,サイクロンセパレータ1の中心近くへと集められる。
 旋回分離されたガスを質量分析装置5に導入する工程は,旋回分離する工程により,圧力が低い状態とされたガスであって,サイクロンセパレータ1の中心部に集められイオン化された気体を,質量分析装置5に導入する工程である。すなわち,ターボブレード17及び中空モータ19の中心が中空であり,かつガスの旋回中心と同心軸上に存在するため,粉塵等が除去され減圧されたガスを,質量分析装置5に導入することができる。
 なお,これまで分析装置導入口3と質量分析装置5が,吸気口11から取り込まれた気体が旋回する下流域に設けられる質量分析装置について説明した。しかしながら,分析装置導入口3は,吸気口11側に設けられてもよい。この場合,下流域から分子(励起分子を含む)又はイオンが放出される。そして,下流域の放出部から放出された分子又はイオンと,吸気口11から取り入れられ旋回分離された気体とが相互作用する。そして,相互作用した反応後のガスが,分析装置導入口3から取り込まれる。
 この放出部の例は,DART(DirectTAnalysisTinTReal Time)イオン源である。このようなDART(登録商標)イオン源は,たとえば,特表2006-523367号公報,米国特許第6949741号明細書,特開2007-256246号公報に開示されている。これらの文献の内容は参照することによりその全体が本明細書に取り込まれる。
 DART法は,電荷を持たない励起されたガス分子(原子)を用いた大気圧イオン化法である。これは、コロナ放電またはグロー放電によって生成した励起分子を大気圧下で試料と反応させ、試料をイオン化して、質量分析計のイオン導入口(オリフィス)に導入させるものである。
 最も,本発明において,大気圧下ではなく減圧下であるものが好ましい。すなわち,本発明の好ましい質量分析システムは,イオン源又は旋回発生容器9内を減圧する減圧機構を有する。減圧機構の例は,ポンプである。減圧された結果の圧力の例は,0.1気圧以上0.9気圧以下,0.2気圧以上0.5気圧以下である。本発明では,旋回発生容器9内において放電が維持される状態が好ましいため,減圧下に反応が進むことが好ましい。特に,減圧下に反応を進ませる場合,高価なヘリウムガスの使用を抑え,例えば窒素ガスのような安価なガスを代替ガスとして利用できることとなる。
 実施例1は,大気中に含まれる成分を分析するための質量分析システムに関する。図5は,サイクロンセパレータ及び分析装置導入口の例を示す図である。図5(a)は正面斜視図,図5(b)は下面斜視図,図5(c)は分解図である。図5に示されるように,サイクロンセパレータ1は,旋回発生容器9と,吸気口11と,旋回発生装置13(ターボブレード17及び中空モータ19)と,排気口15(粉塵排気口)とを含む。図5(c)に示されるとおり,中空モータ19は連結フランジによって,旋回発生容器9に固定されている。分析装置導入口3は,旋回発生容器9側の先端が先細となっており,オリフィスを形成する。なお,図5では質量分析装置を省略している。図5に示されるサイクロンセパレータ1及び分析装置導入口3は,質量分析装置と接続され質量分析システム7を構成する。図中,符号35は連結フランジであり,符号37は固定ねじである。
 実施例2は,イオン化部とガイドワイヤとを有する質量分析システムに関する。図6は,イオン化部とガイドワイヤとを有する質量分析システムを示す概略図である。ガイドワイヤは導電性のある材質で構成されたワイヤである。この例では,大気圧イオン化法により旋回発生容器9内に導入されたガスがたとえばマイナスイオンとなるようにイオン化される。そして,旋回発生容器9の内壁39が高抵抗体とされている。内壁及びガイドワイヤ23に電圧が印加される。すると,内壁とガイドワイヤ23との間に電位差が生ずる。これにより,旋回発生容器9内に電場が生ずる。この際ガイドワイヤ23が正に帯電するように電圧を印加する。すると,イオン化されたガスは,ガイドワイヤ23に引き寄せられつつ旋回する。このようにすることで,一方,粉塵などはイオン化されにくいので,中心に集まらない。このため,粉塵などを効果的に遠心分離することができる。
 実施例3は,イオン化方法として,エレクトロ・スプレー法を用いた質量分析システムに関する。図7は,イオン化方法として,エレクトロ・スプレー法を用いた質量分析システムを示す概略図である。このシステムでは,吸気口11から旋回発生容器9内へ,窒素ガスを導入する。一方,分析対象物質を溶液として,導入された窒素ガスを用いて噴霧する。液滴が乾燥する過程においてクーロン爆発が惹起され,イオンが生成する。旋回発生容器9内の気流により,液滴が旋回する。すると,液滴が積極的に乾燥する。そして,イオンとならない大きな液滴は,遠心分離され,排気口15へと導かれる。液滴が,質量分析装置5へ導入されると,質量分析装置5の真空度を維持できず,また質量分析装置内を汚染することとなる。この実施例の質量分析システム7では,ガス化し,イオン化したもののみを質量分析装置内に導入できるので,真空系の負担を軽減できる。また,先に説明したと同様,ガイドワイヤを用いることで,イオン化ガスをガイドワイヤ23近傍に集めることができ,選択効率を上げることができる。
 実施例4は,旋回発生容器9内に放電部25を有する質量分析システムに関する。図8は,旋回発生容器内に放電部を有する質量分析システムの概略図である。図8に示されるように,このシステムの例は,放電部25として,放電プローブを有するものである。放電プローブを放電させ,不活性ガスを励起する。励起した不活性ガスを,分析対象物質に衝突させる。すると,不活性ガスと分析対象物質との間で,電荷が交換される。生成したイオンは,粉塵に比べてはるかに質量が小さい。このため,生成したイオンは,中心付近を旋回しつつ下方へ進み,ターボブレード17の中心からオリフィスを介して,質量分析装置5へと導かれる。
 実施例5は,分析装置導入口3が吸気口11からの分子流の下流域ではなく,上流域に位置する質量分析システムに関する。この質量分析システムの具体的な構成は,先に説明したものを適宜採用できる。図9は,実施例5の質量分析システムを説明するための図である。この質量分析システムは,旋回発生容器9内に旋回発生装置13側から分子又はイオンを放出するための放出部27をさらに有する。具体的に説明すると,この質量分析システムは,旋回発生装置13の回転軸を通る放出部27を有する。放出部27の例は,エレクトロ・スプレーやスプレイニードルである。そして,旋回発生装置13を構成する中空モータの中心軸にそって,イオンや分子(励起分子を含む)が噴霧,又は放出される。この場合,分析装置導入口3は,放出部27と対向する位置に設けられる。 
 本発明の質量分析システムは,分析機器関連の分野で効果的に利用されうる。
