Definitions
- the present invention relates to a separator of an electrochemical device, such as a lithium secondary battery, and an electrochemical device having the same, and more particularly, a separator having a porous coating layer made of a mixture of filler particles and a binder polymer formed on at least one surface of a nonwoven fabric substrate and the same. It relates to an electrochemical device provided.
- lithium secondary batteries developed in the early 1990s have a higher operating voltage and greater energy density than conventional batteries such as Ni-MH, Ni-Cd, and sulfuric acid-lead batteries that use an aqueous electrolyte solution. I am in the spotlight.
- lithium ion batteries have safety problems such as ignition and explosion due to the use of the organic electrolyte, and are difficult to manufacture.
- the lithium ion polymer battery has been considered as one of the next generation batteries by improving the weakness of the lithium ion battery, but the capacity of the battery is still relatively low compared to the lithium ion battery, and the discharge capacity is improved due to insufficient discharge capacity at low temperatures. This is urgently needed.
- electrochemical devices are produced by many companies, but their safety characteristics show different aspects. It is very important to evaluate the safety and secure the safety of these electrochemical devices. The most important consideration is that an electrochemical device should not cause injury to the user in case of malfunction. For this purpose, safety standards strictly regulate the ignition and smoke in the electrochemical device. In the safety characteristics of the electrochemical device, there is a high possibility that an explosion occurs when the electrochemical device is overheated to cause thermal runaway or the separator penetrates. In particular, polyolefin-based porous membranes commonly used as separators for electrochemical devices exhibit extreme heat shrinkage behavior at temperatures of 100 degrees or more due to material properties and manufacturing process characteristics including elongation. There is a problem that causes.
- a separator having a porous coating layer formed by coating a mixture of filler particles such as inorganic particles and a binder polymer on at least one surface of a porous substrate having a plurality of pores.
- Korean Patent Publication Nos. 2007-83975, 2007-0019958, and JP 2005-536857 A provide a shutdown function on a porous coating layer while providing a porous coating layer formed of a mixture of insulating filler particles and a binder polymer on a porous substrate.
- the technique regarding the separator which added the material which has a is disclosed.
- the insulating porous coating layer provided on the porous substrate contributes to the stability of the electrochemical device, but the thickness of the separator is increased, so that a high capacity battery is not easily implemented.
- the problem to be solved by the present invention is to provide a separator suitable for high-capacity electrochemical devices by providing a porous coating layer which not only has a shutdown function but also exhibits proper electrical conductivity.
- Another object of the present invention is to provide a high capacity electrochemical device having the above-mentioned separator.
- the separator of the present invention is a flat nonwoven substrate having a plurality of pores; And a porous coating layer provided on at least one surface of the nonwoven fabric substrate and formed of a mixture of a plurality of filler particles and a binder polymer, wherein the filler particles include a low melting point resin having a melting point lower than that of the nonwoven substrate and a plurality of fillers.
- the content of the conductive PTC particles may be 1 to 100% by weight based on the total weight of the filler particles, and it is preferable to include inorganic particles in addition to the conductive PTC particles as the filler particles.
- the nonwoven fabric substrate includes microfibers having an average thickness of 0.5 to 10 um and includes pores having a pore diameter of 0.1 to 70 um (micrometer) based on the total number of pores by 50% or more. It is preferable to use that in terms of insulation of the separator.
- the loading amount of the porous coating layer on the nonwoven substrate is adjusted to 5 to 20 g / m 2 is suitable for high capacity battery implementation.
- Such a separator of the present invention may be interposed between an anode and a cathode to be used in an electrochemical device such as a lithium secondary electron or a super capacitor device.
- the separator of the present invention has the following effects by including conductive PTC particles having a shutdown function as filler particles of the porous coating layer formed on the nonwoven fabric substrate.
- the porous coating layer provided on the insulating nonwoven substrate exhibits suitable electrical conductivity by the conductive PTC particles, it can be usefully used as a separator of a high capacity electrochemical device.
- the pore area of the porous coating layer decreases, and the conductivity of the PTC particles decreases, thereby contributing to the stability of the battery, and thermal runaway of the electrochemical device.
- the low melting point resin of the PTC particles melts, the pores of the separator can be blocked to suppress the progress of the electrochemical reaction.
- the inorganic particles are included as the filler particles, even when the nonwoven substrate is damaged by thermal runaway of the electrochemical device, a short circuit between the positive electrode and the negative electrode can be suppressed, thereby improving the safety of the electrochemical device.
- FIG. 3 is a graph showing the nail test results of the battery prepared according to the embodiment.
- the separator of the present invention includes a planar nonwoven substrate having a plurality of pores; And a porous coating layer provided on at least one surface of the nonwoven fabric substrate and formed of a mixture of a plurality of filler particles and a binder polymer, wherein the filler particles include a low melting point resin having a melting point lower than that of the nonwoven substrate and a plurality of fillers.
- So-called polymer-based PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) particles which are formed by mixing an appropriate amount of resin and conductive material particles, are known to have a positive temperature coefficient characteristic (a characteristic in which resistance increases with temperature rise) while having appropriate conductivity. have. That is, in the normal state, since the conductive particles dispersed in the resin form a myriad of conductive paths, they exhibit low resistivity, but when the temperature increases, the thermal expansion coefficient of the resin is higher than that of the conductive material particles. The conductive path by is gradually cut to exhibit PTC characteristics.
- such conductive PTC particles are introduced as filler particles of the porous coating layer. Accordingly, since the porous coating layer provided on the nonwoven fabric substrate exhibits proper electrical conductivity by the conductive PTC particles, it may be usefully used as a separator of a high capacity electrochemical device.
- the electrochemical device when the electrochemical device is overheated, as the low melting point resin of the conductive PTC particles expands, the pore area of the porous coating layer decreases and the conductivity of the PTC particles decreases, so that the progress of the electrochemical reaction is suppressed to improve the stability of the battery. Contribute.
- the low melting point resin of the PTC particles melts to prevent the pores of the porous coating layer and / or the pores of the porous substrate, so that the progress of the electrochemical reaction can be further suppressed.
- the 'low melting point resin' constituting the conductive PTC particles means a resin having a melting point lower than that of the nonwoven fabric base material, and thus the low melting point resin before the nonwoven fabric base material is damaged during thermal runaway of the electrochemical device. Will melt and cause a shutdown.
- the type of the low melting point resin is not particularly limited, but in consideration of thermal safety of the electrochemical device, a polyolefin resin such as polyethylene or a polyethylene copolymer may be used, and a resin having a melting point of 80 to 130 ° C. is preferably used.
- Conductive material particles constituting the conductive PTC particles can be used as long as they are both electrically conductive and thermally stable.
- carbonaceous materials such as natural graphite, artificial graphite or carbon black and graphite may be used alone or in combination of two kinds thereof. It is preferable to mix and use the above.
- the conductive PTC particles according to the present invention can be manufactured according to a conventional method, and within a limit capable of performing the functions of the conductive PTC particles, for example, the weight ratio of the conductive material particles and the low melting point resin is 50:50 to 90. It can manufacture by mixing so that it may become: 10.
- the content of the conductive PTC particles in the porous coating layer may be from 1 to 100% by weight based on the total weight of the filler particles, and it is preferable to include inorganic particles in addition to the conductive PTC particles as the filler particles.
- the content of the inorganic particles is preferably 50% by weight or more based on the total weight of the filler particles, and more preferably 70% by weight or more. The short circuit between the anode and the cathode is suppressed by the inorganic particles during thermal runaway, so that Safety can be ensured.
- the inorganic particles used for forming the porous coating layer are not particularly limited as long as they are electrochemically stable. That is, the inorganic particles that can be used in the present invention are not particularly limited as long as the oxidation and / or reduction reactions do not occur in the operating voltage range (for example, 0 to 5 V on the basis of Li / Li + ) of the applied electrochemical device.
- the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte may be improved by contributing to an increase in the dissociation degree of the electrolyte salt such as lithium salt in the liquid electrolyte.
- the inorganic particles preferably comprise high dielectric constant inorganic particles having a dielectric constant of 5 or more, preferably 10 or more.
- inorganic particles having a dielectric constant greater than 5 include BaTiO 3 , Pb (Zr, Ti) O 3 (PZT), Pb 1-x La x Zr 1-y Ti y O 3 (PLZT, where 0 ⁇ x ⁇ 1, 0 ⁇ y ⁇ 1), Pb (Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 ) O 3 -PbTiO 3 (PMN-PT), Hafnia (HfO 2 ), SrTiO 3 , SnO 2 , CeO 2 , MgO, NiO, CaO, ZnO, ZrO 2 , Y 2 O 3 , Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2, SiC Or mixtures thereof.
- the inorganic particles may be inorganic particles having lithium ion transfer capability, that is, inorganic particles containing lithium elements but having a function of transferring lithium ions without storing lithium.
- inorganic particles having a lithium ion transfer capacity include lithium phosphate (Li 3 PO 4 ), lithium titanium phosphate (Li x Ti y (PO 4 ) 3 , 0 ⁇ x ⁇ 2, 0 ⁇ y ⁇ 3), Lithium aluminum titanium phosphate (Li x Al y Ti z (PO 4 ) 3 , 0 ⁇ x ⁇ 2, 0 ⁇ y ⁇ 1, 0 ⁇ z ⁇ 3), 14Li 2 O-9Al 2 O 3 -38TiO 2 -39P 2 (LiAlTiP) x O y series glass such as O 5 (0 ⁇ x ⁇ 4, 0 ⁇ y ⁇ 13), lithium lanthanum titanate (Li x La y TiO 3 , 0 ⁇ x ), lithium lanthan
- the average particle diameter of the filler particles is not limited, but is preferably in the range of 0.001 to 10 um as possible in order to form a coating layer with a uniform thickness and an appropriate porosity. If it is less than 0.001 um, dispersibility may decrease, and if it exceeds 10 um, the thickness of the porous coating layer may increase, and a large pore size may increase the probability of internal short circuit during battery charging and discharging.
- the binder polymer contained in the porous coating layer may be a polymer commonly used in the art to form a porous coating layer on a nonwoven substrate.
- a polymer having a glass transition temperature (T g ) of -200 to 200 ° C because it can improve mechanical properties such as flexibility and elasticity of the finally formed porous coating layer.
- the binder polymer serves as a binder for stably connecting and stably bonding between the filler particles or between the filler particles and the nonwoven substrate. It is preferable to use the binder polymer which is excellent in heat resistance than resin which comprises a nonwoven fabric base material and PTC particle
- the binder polymer does not necessarily have an ion conducting ability, but when a polymer having an ion conducting ability is used, the performance of the electrochemical device may be further improved. Therefore, the binder polymer is preferably as high as possible dielectric constant. In fact, since the dissociation degree of the salt in the electrolyte depends on the dielectric constant of the solvent of the electrolyte, the higher the dielectric constant of the binder polymer, the higher the dissociation of the salt in the electrolyte.
- the binder polymer may have a feature that can exhibit a high degree of swelling of the electrolyte by gelling upon impregnation of the liquid electrolyte. Accordingly, it is preferred to use polymers having a solubility index of 15 to 45 MPa 1/2 , more preferred solubility indices in the range of 15 to 25 MPa 1/2 and 30 to 45 MPa 1/2 . Therefore, it is preferable to use hydrophilic polymers having more polar groups than hydrophobic polymers such as polyolefins. This is because when the solubility index is less than 15 MPa 1/2 and more than 45 MPa 1/2 , it is difficult to be swelled by a conventional battery liquid electrolyte.

- polyethylene oxide polyethylene oxide
- cyanoethylpullulan cyanoethylpolyvinylalcohol
- cyano Ethylcellulose cyanoeth ylcellulose, cyanoethylsucrose, pullulan, carboxyl methyl cellulose and the like.
- the composition ratio of the filler particles and the binder polymer of the porous coating layer coated on the nonwoven substrate according to the present invention is preferably in the range of 50:50 to 99: 1, more preferably 70:30 to 95: 5.
- the content ratio of the filler particles to the binder polymer is less than 50:50, the content of the polymer may increase, thereby reducing the pore size and porosity of the porous coating layer.
- the content of the inorganic particles exceeds 99 parts by weight, since the binder polymer content is small, the peeling resistance of the porous coating layer may be weakened.
- Pore size and porosity of the porous coating layer is not particularly limited, pore size is preferably in the range of 0.001 to 10um, porosity is preferably in the range of 10 to 90%. Pore size and porosity depend mainly on the size of the filler particles. For example, when using filler particles having a particle size of 1 um or less, the pores formed also exhibit approximately 1 um or less. The pore structure is filled with the electrolyte solution to be poured later, the electrolyte thus filled serves to transfer the ion. When the pore size and porosity are less than 0.001 um and 10%, respectively, they may act as a resistive layer. When the pore size and porosity exceed 10 um and 90%, respectively, mechanical properties may be degraded.
- the separator of the present invention may further include other additives in addition to the above-described filler particles and polymer as the porous coating layer component.
- the separator of the present invention includes a planar nonwoven substrate having a plurality of pores provided with a porous coating layer. Insulation on both electrodes is maintained due to the nonwoven substrate.
- the nonwoven substrate is preferably micropores having an average thickness of 0.5 to 10 um, more preferably 1 to 7 um, for pores having a long diameter (longest diameter of the pores) of 0.1 to 70 um based on the total number of pores. It is preferable to form so as to contain 50% or more.
- Nonwoven fabrics having a large number of pores with a diameter less than 0.1 um are not only difficult to manufacture, but also lower the porosity of the nonwoven fabric, which may partially prevent the smooth movement of lithium ions.
- the long diameter of the pores exceeds 70 um, there may be a problem of the insulation degradation due to leakage current (leak current).
- the pores of the size described above are formed to contain 50% or more based on the total number of pores present in the nonwoven fabric, a separator suitable for a high capacity battery can be manufactured with good insulation.

- the melting temperature of the microfine yarn is 200 ° C or more.
- the thickness of the nonwoven substrate is preferably 9 to 30 um.
- the porous coating layer described above is provided on at least one surface of the nonwoven fabric substrate.
- the loading amount of the porous coating layer on the nonwoven substrate is preferably 5 to 20 g / m 2 in consideration of the function of the porous coating layer and suitability for high capacity batteries.
- the binder polymer is dissolved in a solvent to prepare a binder polymer solution.
- filler particles including conductive PTC particles are added and dispersed in a solution of the binder polymer.
- the solubility index is similar to that of the binder polymer to be used, and the boiling point is preferably low. This is to facilitate uniform mixing and subsequent solvent removal.
