- Cellulose is the most abundant renewable resource on the earth, with abundant sources and low prices, such as straw remaining in agricultural production and waste from forestry production.
- the use of cellulose glycols not only opens up new synthetic pathways, but also achieves products of high economic value from inexpensive cellulose, and because cellulose cannot be consumed by humans, it does not affect human food security.
- cellulose is formed by condensation of a glucose unit through a glycosidic bond and contains a large amount of a hydroxyl group. These hydroxyl groups are completely retained during the conversion of cellulose to ethylene glycol, and thus the conversion process is extremely atomic. It can be seen that the conversion of cellulose to ethylene glycol has significant advantages unmatched by many other production routes.
- M-W2C/AC catalyst A mixture solution of ammonium metatungstate and nickel nitrate in a weight ratio of tungsten/nickel of 15:1 was prepared, wherein the mass concentration of ammonium metatungstate was 0.4 g/ml. Thereafter, the mixed solution was impregnated with an active carbon support (AC). After drying in an oven at 120 °C for 12 h, the catalyst precursor was placed in a H2 atmosphere for a programmed temperature carbothermal reaction.

- Preparation of WxC/AC catalyst The preparation process was similar to that of Example 1, except that only ammonium metatungstate was used in the precursor without adding nickel nitrate, and the carbonization temperature was 800 °C, thereby obtaining a W2C/AC catalyst. Alternatively, carbonization is carried out at a higher temperature of 850 ° C to obtain a WxC/AC catalyst, which is a mixed crystal phase of W2C and WC, 1 ⁇ ⁇ ⁇ 2.
- the nickel tungsten carbide catalyst has excellent ethylene glycol yield in a certain temperature range.
- the preferred temperature is around 220-250 °C.
- the catalytic conversion performance of cellulose on Ni-W2C/AC (2 wt% Ni-30 wt% W2C) catalyst at different reaction times is shown in Table 5.
- the reaction conditions were the same as in Example 10 except that the reaction time was different.
- the nickel tungsten carbide catalyst has excellent ethylene glycol yield under a certain reaction pressure.
- the preferred reaction pressure is 3-6 MPa.
