Abstract

[0002] 近年、液晶表示装置は、その低消費電力性、携帯性などから各種の機器に広く使 用されている。特に強誘電性液晶を液晶材料に用いた液晶表示装置は、応答速度 が速いため、動画表示に適している。し力しながら、強誘電性液晶を用いた場合、液 晶相が層構造をとり、外力に対して層構造が破壊されるため、パネル構造が弱いとい う欠点がある。そこで、 2枚の基板間に強誘電性液晶を封入して、液晶相が層構造を なす液晶表示装置にあっては、外力に耐えるように基板間にスぺーサ、シール材を 設けておくことが一般的である (例えば、特許文献 1及び 2参照)。

発明の開示
発明が解決しょうとする課題

[0021] 本発明の配向処理方法にあっては、配向処理時に、共通電極及び表示領域の外 側の第 1電極に一極性の電圧を印加し、第 1電極の外側の前記第 2電極に他極性の 電圧を印加する。よって、簡単な手法により、表示領域の外側に表示領域と同等の 配向状態が得られ、更にその外側に表示領域と逆特性の配向状態が得られる。 発明の効果
[0022] 本発明では、表示領域と配向状態が逆光学特性である領域を表示領域の外側に 設けるようにしたので、液晶層方向がラビング方向に対して反転するため、配向欠陥 の発生要因であるシール部分力ものストレスの伝播方向を制御でき、表示領域へ配 向欠陥が侵入することを抑制できて、配向欠陥に伴う表示品質の劣化を防止するこ とがでさる。

[0025] 本発明をその実施の形態を示す図面を参照して具体的に説明する。なお、本発明 は以下の実施の形態に限定されるものではない。
[0026] 図 1は本発明の液晶表示装置の分解平面図、図 2は液晶パネルの断面図、図 3は 液晶パネルの模式的平面図である。
[0027] 図 2に示すように、液晶パネル 1は、マトリックス状に配置された画素電極 4及び画 素電極 4の夫々に接続された TFT21 (図 2参照)を有する第 1基板としてのガラス基 板 2と、平板状の対向電極 5を有する第 2基板としてのガラス基板 3とを備えて ヽる。 画素電極 4及び対向電極 5上には夫々配向膜 6及び配向膜 7が設けられている。ガ ラス基板 2, 3間に面内均一のギャップを保持するためのスぺーサ 8が設けられ、液晶 パネル 1の辺縁には熱硬化性榭榭脂力 なるシール材 9が設けられて!/、る。これらの スぺーサ 8及びシール材 9によって、ガラス基板 2, 3間に所定長の空隙が形成され、 この空隙内に強誘電性液晶を封入して液晶層 10が形成されている。更に、ガラス基 板 2及びガラス基板 3の外面に、偏光板 11及び偏光板 12が夫々設けられて 、る。
[0028] 図 3に示すように、画素電極 4及び TFT21は、ガラス基板 2上にマトリックス配置さ れており、各画素電極 4は TFT21のドレイン端子と接続されている。 TFT21のゲート 端子はゲート電極 22に接続され、 TFT21のソース端子はデータ電極 23に接続され ている。
[0029] また、図 2に示すように、ガラス基板 2の画素電極 4の外側には、表示領域と同等の 配向状態を生成するための第 1電極としての周辺電極 31が設けられ、更に周辺電極 31の外側には、表示領域と逆極性の配向状態を生成するための第 2電極としての反 転電極 32が設けられている。図 1に示すように、この周辺電極 31は、矩形状の液晶 パネル 1の長辺領域及び短辺領域の何れにも設けられ、反転電極 32は、液晶パネ ル 1の短辺領域のみに設けられている。そして、短辺領域では、周辺電極 31と反転 電極 32とが櫛歯状をなして配置されている。周辺電極 31と反転電極 32との間には、 未配向状態であるバッファ領域 33が設けられている。
[0030] 周辺電極 31で囲まれた内部領域力 液晶パネル 1の表示領域 laとなる。ラビング 方向は、液晶パネル 1の長辺に平行な方向(図 1の実線矢符方向)であり、液晶層の 方向は、液晶パネル 1の短辺の方向力 少し傾斜した方向(図 1の破線方向)である 。そして、配向処理時に、周辺電極 31に対向電極 5と同極性の電圧を印加すること により、表示領域 laの外側に、表示領域 laと同等の配向状態の領域を生成できる。 また、同じく配向処理時に、反転電極 32に対向電極 5と逆極性の電圧を印加するこ とにより、更にその外側に、表示領域 laとはラビング方向に対して反転した光学特性 を有する配向状態の領域を生成できる。
[0031] 液晶パネル 1の長辺領域には、配向欠陥を防ぐ障壁 34が設けられている。この障 壁 34の端部 34aは、短辺領域の周辺電極 31を超えて延びており、その先端は反転 電極 32の領域内に延在している。また、一方の短辺領域には、液晶用の注入口 35 が設けられている。
[0032] このような構成をなす本発明の液晶表示装置における配向欠陥の制御について説 明する。図 4は、この配向欠陥の制御を示す拡大図である。配向処理時に、周辺電 極 31に対向電極 5と同極性の電圧を印加するとともに、反転電極 32に対向電極 5と 逆極性の電圧を印加する。これにより、表示領域 laの外側に、表示領域 laと同等の 配向状態の領域が生成されるとともに、この領域の外側に、表示領域 laとはラビング 方向に対して反転した光学特性を有する配向状態の領域が生成される。
[0033] 配向欠陥は、液晶層の方向(図 4の破線方向)と同じ方向(図 4の矢印方向)に成長 していく。この際、周辺電極 31の領域と反転電極 32の領域とは、配向状態の光学特 性が反転しているため、配向欠陥の成長方向が異なる。よって、周辺電極 31の領域 から反転電極 32の領域へ侵入した配向欠陥は、侵入角度が反転して反転電極 32 の領域内を進み、一方、反転電極 32の領域から周辺電極 31の領域へ侵入した配向 欠陥は、侵入角度が反転して周辺電極 31の領域内を進む。このような反転を繰り返 すことにより、配向欠陥はバッファ領域 33内に閉じ込められる。よって、シール材 9の 近傍で発生した配向欠陥が表示領域 la内に入ることはない。
[0034] また、障壁 34の端部 34aを反転電極 32の領域内まで延在させているため、障壁 3 4が存在しない領域で発生した配向欠陥は、反転電極 32によって成長方向が制御さ れるので、表示領域 la内に侵入することはない。
[0035] なお、周辺電極 31は設けずに、反転電極 32のみを表示領域 laの外側に設ける場 合においても、反転電極 32によって配向欠陥の成長方向を反転させて、配向欠陥 の表示領域 laへの侵入を抑制することは可能である。
[0036] 以上のように、本発明の液晶表示装置では、反転電極 32によって配向欠陥を制御 するようにしたので、額縁領域を大きく広げることなぐシール材近傍で生じた配向欠 陥が表示領域 la内へ侵入することを容易に抑制することができる。この結果、配向欠 陥に起因する画質劣化を防止することができ、高画質の画像を安定的に提供できる
[0037] 図 5は、本発明の液晶表示装置の他の例の分解平面図であり、図 1と同一部分に は同一番号を付してそれらの説明を省略する。この例では、液晶パネル 1の長辺領 域に、障壁 34を設けていない。長辺領域からの配向欠陥の侵入が見込まれない場 合には、図 5のような構成が可能である。 [0038] 図 6は、周辺電極 31及び反転電極 32の他の構成例を示す拡大図である。この例 では、図 1,図 4のような櫛歯構成をなさず、周辺電極 31及び反転電極 32は何れも 矩形状で平行配置されている。このような例でも、配向欠陥の成長方向が制御される ので、配向欠陥は、バッファ領域 33内に閉じ込められて、表示領域 la内に侵入する ことがない。
[0039] 図 7は、液晶パネル 1の他の構成例を示す断面図である。この例では、図 2と異なり 、対向電極 5を有する第 2基板としてのガラス基板 3に、周辺電極 31及び反転電極3 2が設けられている。この例でも、図 2の例と同様な配向処理を施せて、図 2の例と同 様に配向欠陥の制御を行えることは勿論である。

Claims

請求の範囲
[1] ラビングされた配向膜を有する複数の基板を対向させ、該基板間の空隙に液晶材 料を封入してある液晶表示装置において、表示領域の外側に、前記ラビングの方向 に対して反転した光学特性を有する配向状態の領域を設けてあることを特徴とする 液晶表示装置。
[2] ラビングされた配向膜を有する複数の基板を対向させ、該基板間の空隙に液晶材 料を封入してある液晶表示装置において、表示領域の外側に、該表示領域と同等の 配向状態である第 1領域を設けてあり、該第 1領域の外側に、前記ラビングの方向に 対して反転した光学特性を有する配向状態の第 2領域を設けてあることを特徴とする 液晶表示装置。
[3] 前記第 1領域と前記第 2領域とが互いに櫛歯状に設けられていることを特徴とする 請求項 2記載の液晶表示装置。
[4] ラビングの方向と平行な方向に延在する障壁を、前記表示領域の外側に設けてあ ることを特徴とする請求項 2または 3記載の液晶表示装置。
[5] 前記障壁の端部は、少なくとも前記第 2領域の内部まで延在していることを特徴と する請求項 4記載の液晶表示装置。
[6] 画素電極及び該画素電極に接続されたスイッチング素子が形成された第 1基板と、 共通電極が形成された第 2基板とを対向させ、前記第 1基板及び第 2基板間の空隙 に液晶材料を封入してある液晶表示装置にぉ 、て、前記第 1基板上の表示領域の 外側に、該表示領域と同等の配向状態を生成するための第 1電極を設けてあり、前 記第 1基板上の前記第 1電極の外側に、前記表示領域と逆特性の配向状態を生成 するための第 2電極を設けてあることを特徴とする液晶表示装置。
[7] 画素電極及び該画素電極に接続されたスイッチング素子が形成された第 1基板と、 共通電極が形成された第 2基板とを対向させ、前記第 1基板及び第 2基板間の空隙 に液晶材料を封入してある液晶表示装置にぉ 、て、前記第 2基板上の表示領域の 外側に、該表示領域と同等の配向状態を生成するための第 1電極を設けてあり、前 記第 2基板上の前記第 1電極の外側に、前記表示領域と逆特性の配向状態を生成 するための第 2電極を設けてあることを特徴とする液晶表示装置。
[8] 画素電極及び該画素電極に接続されたスイッチング素子が形成された第 1基板と、 共通電極が形成された第 2基板とを対向させ、前記第 1基板及び第 2基板間の空隙 に液晶材料を封入してある液晶表示装置に対して配向処理を行う方法にぉ 、て、前 記第 1基板上の表示領域の外側に該表示領域と同等の配向状態を生成するための 第 1電極を設け、前記第 1基板上の前記第 1電極の外側に前記表示領域と逆特性の 配向状態を生成するための第 2電極を設け、配向処理時に、前記共通電極及び前 記第 1電極に一極性の電圧を印加し、前記第 2電極に他極性の電圧を印加すること を特徴とする配向処理方法。
[9] 画素電極及び該画素電極に接続されたスイッチング素子が形成された第 1基板と、 共通電極が形成された第 2基板とを対向させ、前記第 1基板及び第 2基板間の空隙 に液晶材料を封入してある液晶表示装置に対して配向処理を行う方法にぉ 、て、前 記第 2基板上の表示領域の外側に該表示領域と同等の配向状態を生成するための 第 1電極を設け、前記第 2基板上の前記第 1電極の外側に前記表示領域と逆特性の 配向状態を生成するための第 2電極を設け、配向処理時に、前記共通電極及び前 記第 1電極に一極性の電圧を印加し、前記第 2電極に他極性の電圧を印加すること を特徴とする配向処理方法。
