この発明は、 例えばプロジェクタ用光源としてディスプレイ装置に適用する固 体レ一ザ装置に関するものである。 背景技術
一般に L D (レ一ザダイォード)励起固体レ一ザでは、 2枚の反射板で形成され る共振器内にレーザ媒質を配置し、 励起光をレーザ媒質に入力することによって レーザ媒質の利得特性と反射板の反射特性で決まる波長が共振する。 そしてレー ザ媒質の利得が共振器内の損失を上回ったときに光は増幅され、 外部に出力とし て取り出すことができるが、 この時のレーザ光波長は単一波長である (Wa 1 t e r Ko e chne r 著、 「 S o l i d - S t at e Las e r E n g i n e e r ing 第 4版」 、 Spr inge r S e r i e s in Opt i c a l S c i enc e s、 Vo l. 1、 p . 136、 1995年ドィヅ Sp r ing e r社発行参照)。
このように従来用いられてきた固体レーザ装置は一つの共振器と一つの励起光 源で得られるレーザ波長は単一であり、 複数の波長を得るためには装置を複数個 用意する必要あった。 そのため、 装置の大型化、 且つ高コスト化につながる問題 があった。
この発明は一つの共振器および一つの励起光源という構成で、 2種類の異なる 波長を個別または同時に出力する固体レーザ装置を提供することを目的とする。 発明の開示
上記の目的に鑑み、 この発明は、 同軸上に配置され、 励起により蛍光を発光す る 1つまたは複数の固体レーザ媒質と、 上記固体レーザ媒質と同軸上で、 かつ上 記固体レーザ媒質の両外側に配置され、 上記蛍光のうち軸方向に発生した光成分 を共振させる第 1および第 2の反射手段と、 上記固体レ一ザ媒質の 1つを励起す る励起光源と、 を備え、 上記第 2の反射手段は、 少なくとも 1つの波長に対して それぞれ所定の反射率を有することを特徴とする固体レーザ装置からなる。 図面の簡単な説明

以下、 図面を参照して本発明の各実施の形態を説明する。
実施の形態 1 .
図 1はこの発明の実施の形態 1による固体レーザ装置を示す構成図である。 本 実施の形態による固体レーザ装置は基本的には一つの共振器および一つの励起光 源という構成で、 2種類の異なる波長 (え 1および A 2 )を個別または同時に出力 する。
同図において、 第 1のレーザ媒質 1、 第 2のレーザ媒質 2は互いにレ一ザ媒質 軸方向が平行で同一軸上に配置されている。 第 1の反射手段 3、 第 2の反射手段
4は第 1および第 2のレーザ媒質 1、 2の両端に軸上に配置され、 第 1および第
2のレーザ媒質軸方向に対して入射面は垂直に形成されている。 第 1の反射手段 3と第 2の反射手段 4で共振器が構成されている。 以後、 上記の部材で構成され る軸を共振器軸と呼ぶ。 なお、 この共振器軸方向を空間座標における z軸方向 (紙面に向かって左方向が正)と定め、 空間における上方向 (紙面に垂直で、 手前 に向かう方向)を y軸方向と定め、 z軸および y軸に直行し、 紙面の下に向かう 方向を X軸と定め、 それに基づいて以下、 説明を行う。
励起光源 5は第 1の反射手段 3側の共振器外部に設置され第 1のレーザ媒質 1 を発振波長 λ ρで励起する。 共振光 6は共振器内を周回する。 出力光 7は共振器 からの出力光である。 第 1のレーザ媒質 1はえ ρ付近で吸収ピークを、 ぇ 1付近 に利得ピークを持つ。 また第 2の反射手段 4に対向する面 1 Αには励起光波長 λ ρに対して全反射する膜が施されている。 また第 2のレ一ザ媒質 2はえ 1付近で 吸収ピークを、 え 2付近に利得ピークを持ち、 かつ人 ρ付近では透明である。 第 1の反射手段 3は波長え ρに対して全て透過し (反射率 0 %)、 人 1およびえ 2に 対して 1 0 0 %反射する。 なお、 第 1の反射手段 3は第 2のレーザ媒質 2との隣 接する面に膜として施されていてもよい。 この場合でも同様の効果を示し、 別途 第 1の反射手段 3を独立して配置する必要がなくなる。
第 2の反射手段 4は外部制御により反射特性が変化する 2段階のスィツチング 機構 (反射特性変更手段 4 a)を有している。 図 2および図 3に各状態での反射特 性と各レーザ媒質の利得ピークとの関係を示す。 図 2は後述するえ 1モードに関 するもので、 G P 1が第 1のレーザ媒質 1の利得ビーク、 R E 1が第 2の反射手 段 2での反射特性、 図 3は後述する人2モードに関するもので、 G P 2が第 2の レーザ媒質 2の利得ピーク、 R E 2が第 2の反射手段 2での反射特性を示す。 図 2に示す 1つ目の状態では波長え 1付近で反射率 R 1 1の反射ピークをもち、 λ 2付近では比較的低い反射率 R 2 1を形成する (以下、 この状態はえ 1モードと 呼ぶ)。 図 3に示す他方の状態では波長え 2付近で反射率] R 2 2反射ピークをも ち、 λ 1付近では比較的低い反射率 R 1 2を形成する (以下、 この状態は人 2モ —ドと呼ぶ)。 スィツチング機構の詳細な説明は後述の実施の形態にて説明する が、 例えば反射手段をエタロンとしこれを傾ける、 電圧を与える、 温度を変える 等により波長特性を切り換える手段からなる。 これらの機能を含むものとして反 射特性変更手段 4 aを備える。 次に動作について説明する。 まずえ 1モードの動作から説明する。 このモード は波長え 1のみ発振して、 λ 2の発振は抑制されている。 第 1の反射手段 3から 共振器内に励起光が入力され、 第 2のレ一ザ媒質 2を通過した後に第 1のレーザ 媒質 1に入射される。 第 1のレーザ媒質 1内を伝播中、 励起光は吸収されていき、 面 1 Αで反射された後、 再度逆方向に伝播しながら全て第 1のレーザ媒質 1に吸 収される。 一方、 利得波長であるえ 1は励起光強度に比例する利得係数 g 1 [ 1 /m] で第 1のレーザ媒質 1で増幅されるが、 第 2の反射手段 4での反射率 R 1 1およびこれを除く共振器内でのロス (吸収)ひ 2 (第 2のレーザ媒質 2による吸 収ゃ、 他の光学部品の吸収)により周回中にロスが発生し、 発振条件は以下の ( 1 )式で表される。

右辺は利得分、 左辺はロス分を示す。 L 1は第 1のレーザ媒質 1の長さ [m] 、 係数 2は往復分を求めている。 この条件を満たすとき (共振条件)、 共振器内の波 長入 1をもつ光は増幅されて発振に至る。 この時、 波長 λ 2に対しても同様に利 得とロスの関係を導くことができ、 入 1モードでは入2の発振を抑制したいので、 以下の条件式である(2 )式が成り立つ。

ここで、 g 2は第 2のレーザ媒質 2で生じる利得係数、 L 2は第 2のレーザ媒質
2の長さ [m] 、 : 1は R 2 1以外の第 1のレーザ媒質 1および他の光学部品で 生じる λ 2に対する共振器内でのロス (吸収)である。 上記の(1 )および(2 )式の 条件を満たす R l 1および R 2 1を選ぶことにより(図 1参照)、 人 2の発振は抑 えつつ人 1を発振させることができる。 発振したえ 1波長をもつ発振光は第 2の 反射手段 4から取り出される。
次に人 2モードの動作について説明する。 このモードは波長 λ 2のみ発振して、 λ 1の発振は抑制されている動作となる。 励起光が第 1のレーザ媒質 1に吸収さ れるまでは L 1モードと全く等しい動作をする。 励起された第 1のレーザ媒質 1 はえ 1の利得を増加させて共振器内部のパワーを増加させていく。 一方、 第 2の レ一ザ媒質 2では波長入 1の共振光を吸収することによって波長人 2を発光する c 波長え 2の光は第 2のレーザ媒質 2で誘導放出を繰り返し、 共振器内で増幅され ていく。 従って; I 2の発振条件は以下の(3)式で表される。

え 1に対しては、 発振条件は満たさないので以下の(4)式の条件式があげられる c

ただし第 2のレーザ媒質 2を励起するために λ 1の共振器内部パワーは高くする 必要がある。 上記の 2つの式を満たすような R 22および R 1 2を選ぶことによ りえ 1の発振を抑え、 且つ; I 2を発振させることができる。 発振光 λ 2は前述の 入 1モード時の発振光 λ 1と同じく第 2の反射手段 4から出力される。
なお、 (4)式の代わりに以下の(5)式と上記の(3)式の条件式をともに満たす ような R 22および R 12を選択することにより、 え 1とえ 2は同時に発振する c 従って、 人 1とえ 2を同時に取り出したい場合は、 この条件により達成される。

以上のように、 この実施の形態 1によれば、 上記第 1のレーザ媒質 1、 第 2の レーザ媒質 2、 第 1の反射手段 3、 第 2の反射手段 4を同一軸上に配置し、 第 1 のレ一ザ媒質を励起してその利得波長を第 2のレ一ザ媒質によって吸収させれば 第 2の波長も増幅させることができ、 且つ第 2の反射手段 4を上記のような 2段 階の反射特性にスィツチングすることで、 一つの共振器および一つの励起光源に て 2種類の波長を発振可能な構成となる。
また、 第 1のレ一ザ媒質 1ではえ 1モードおよびえ 2モードともに波長え 1の 光に関して発振状態もしくは発振状態に近い条件で維持されているため、 第 1の レーザ媒質 1の発熱量がほぼ一定に保たれる。 従って第 1のレーザ媒質 1の熱レ ンズ値が一定に保たれ、 共振器安定領域も 2波長スィツチング時に変化しない。 また、 上記の(3)および(5)式を同時に満たす第 2の反射手段の反射率を有す ることで、 2種類の波長を同時に出力することができる。
なお、 第 1のレーザ媒質 1および第 2のレーザ媒質 2の材料として、 例えばそ れそれ Nd : YAG結晶 (Nd (ネオジゥム)原子添加の Y (イツ トリゥム)系素材)、
Yb : YAG結晶 (Yb (ィッテルビウム)原子添加の Y (ィットリゥム)系素材)が あげられる (第 1の固体レーザ媒質が Nd : YAG(Y3A15012)結晶、 第 2の 固体レーザ媒質が Yb : YAG結晶等でもよい)。 Nd : YAG結晶は波長 80 0 nm付近で吸収ピークを、 また 9 4 6 nmに利得ビークを持つ。 Y b : Y A G 結晶は 9 4 0 nm付近で吸収ビークを、 1 0 3 0 nmに利得ピークを持つ。 従つ て、 8 0 0 nm付近の励起光源を用いることで、 人 1が 9 4 6 nm、 え 2が 1 0 3 O nmに相当する 2波長発振が可能となる。 更に、 8 8 0 nmの励起光として 用いると、 8 0 0 nm付近の励起光より; L p/え 1で示される量子効率が高くな るため、 第 1のレ一ザ媒質 1の発熱が少なくなり、 より安定になる。
また、 共振器内部に共振光の偏光を規定するための後述する実施の形態と同様 な偏光子 8 (図 5参照)を新たに配置してもよい。 配置場所は任意に決めることが でき、 効果は変わらない。 偏光子を配置することによって出力する発振光の偏光 を直線偏光に形成することができる。 更にこの偏光子を共振軸に対して入射面が 垂直から傾けて設置してもよい。 その場合は偏光子からの反射光が共振器軸に再 び進入しないため、 より安定な発振が得られる。
また、 第 2のレーザ媒質 2を用いずに 2波長発振する構成も可能である。 この 場合、 図 1において第 2のレーザ媒質 2を取り外した構成になる。 第 1のレーザ 媒質 1が複数の利得ピークをもっか、 広い利得帯域をもつ場合、 え 1またはえ 2 をその利得内で任意に選び、 その際に上記の式を満たす反射率を有する第 2の反 射手段 4で構成する。 この時、 λ ρで励起することによって; I 1および; I 2とも に利得を持ち始めるので、 上記の反射特性のスィツチングにより 2波長発振が可 能となる。 例えば第 1のレーザ媒質 1の材料として N d : ¥八0結晶(丫3 1 5 0 1 2結晶)を選択し、 励起波長え pが 8 0 0 nm、 λ 1を 9 4 6 nm、 え 2を 1 0 6 4 nmに設定することで、 上記の 2波長発振が可能となる。 ただし、 人 1も しくは I 2のどちらかが先に発振を始めるともう一方の波長における利得は減少 するために 2波長同時発振は起こらない。
また、 上記のレーザ媒質の例として、 N d : YA G結晶と Y b : YA G結晶の 組み合わせをあげたが、 他の N dや Y bを添加したレ一ザ媒質等において上記の 条件式を満たす媒質であれば同様の効果を示す。
また、 この実施の形態 1に係わる第 2高調波 2波長発振固体レーザ装置につい て説明する。 図 2はその第 2高調波 2波長発振固体レーザ装置を示す構成図であ る。 この実施の形態 1の固体レーザ装置の出力光を用い、 これを波長変換素子 (波長変換手段) 70で波長変換することによって第 2高調波を得る構成となって いる。 共振器からの出力光人 1または λ 2を波長変換素子 70に通過させること により、 (人 1)/2または(え 2)/2の波長が得られる。 波長変換素子 70は、 例えば 2種類の波長に対して同時に位相整合条件を満たす擬似位相整合材料を用 いる。 この材料を用いることにより 2種類の波長(え 1および λ 2)に対して同時 に第 2高調波を出力することができる。 具体的な上記の材料として Ρ Ρ Κ Τ Ρ (Periodically Poled KTiOP04)、 P P L N (Periodically Poled LiNb03)、 Mg 0 添加 PPLNがあげられる。 通常の非線形材料では髙出力の入力光に対して損傷 を受けることがあるが、 PPLNは温度を上げることにより高出力の入力光に適 用できる。 更に M g 0添加 P P L Nでは温度を上げずとも室温の状態でも高出力 の入力光に適用できる。 上記のように第 1のレーザ媒質 1に Nd: YAG結晶、 第 2のレーザ媒質 2に Yb: YAG結晶を用いた場合、 共振器から得られる波長 は 946 nmと 1030 nmである。 従って、 波長変換素子 70によって得られ る波長はそれそれ 473 nmと 515 nmとなり、 青色と緑色のレーザ光が得ら れることになる。 以上のように、 第 1のレーザ媒質 1に Nd: YAG結晶、 第 2 のレーザ媒質 2に Yb: YAG結晶を用い、 共振器の出力光に波長変換素子 70 を適用することによって、 単一の共振器と単一の励起光源を用いても青色と緑色 の 2種類のレ一ザ光を任意に得ることができる。
なお、 第 1のレーザ媒質 1に Nd: YAG結晶、 第 2のレーザ媒質 2に Yb: Y A G結晶を用いたが、 他のレ一ザ媒質でも第 2高調波が青色および緑色となる 組み合わせであれば適用可能であり、 同様の効果が得られる。
実施の形態 2.
本実施の形態による固体レーザ装置は、 一つの共振器および一つの励起光源と いう構成で 2種類の異なる波長 (え 1および入 2)を個別に出力する。 その 2波長 をスィツチングする手段として波長フィル夕(波長選択手段)を用い、 各波長に対 する出力結合量を制御している。
図 5はこの発明の実施の形態 2による固体レーザ装置を示す構成図である。 な お、 この実施の形態 2の構成要素のうち実施の形態 1の固体レーザ装置の構成要 素と共通するものについては同一符号を付し、 その部分の説明を省略する。 図 5において、 共振器内には波長選択手段 7が配置されている。 波長選択手段 7は偏光子 (偏光選択手段) 8と偏光回転手段 9とで構成されており、 偏光子 8は y軸を回転中心として z軸に対して入射面が垂直より傾いて配置されており、 且 つ X z平面に平行な方向に振動する偏光成分 (p偏光)は透過し、 直交する成分 ( s偏光)は反射する特性をもつ。 偏光回転手段 9は、 入射したレーザ光の偏光状 態を変換する手段である。 例えば材料に一軸性の複屈折結晶が用いられ、 光学軸 方向が x z平面に対して 4 5 ° 傾いて形成されている。 1軸性の複屈折結晶 (変 更回転手段 9 )は軸方位によつて屈折率が異なるため、 入射レーザ光の偏光成分 は軸に沿って 2種類のそれそれ異なる位相速度で結晶内を伝播する。 結晶を通過 した後のレーザ光は軸方向の屈折率差とレーザ光伝播方向の結晶厚みと波長入に 応じて偏光が変化する。 例えば、 結晶通過後に各偏光成分の位相が波長長さの 1 / 4だけ変化した場合は円偏光になり、 波長長さの 1 / 2だけ変化した場合は偏 光角度が 9 0 ° 回転する。 一般にそれそれの場合の上記の複屈折結晶は 1 / 4波 長板、 1 / 2波長板と呼ばれる。 この出力光を偏光子 8に通すことにより一方向 の偏光成分のみ通過させて、 それに垂直な偏光成分は反射させるが、 上記の通り 偏光状態は波長に依存するため、 偏光子 8の透過成分は波長に依存する。 この波 長依存性は図 6に相当する。 第 3の反射手段 1 0 (全反射手段)は第 2の反射手段 4と同じ配置をとり、 第 1の反射手段 3と同じ特性をもつ。
次に動作について説明する。 励起光が第 1のレーザ媒質 1に吸収されるまでは 実施の形態 1と等しい動作を行う。 第 3の反射手段 1 0は第 1の反射手段 3と同 じ反射特性を有しているので、 もし波長選択手段 7がなかった場合は波長人 1お よびえ 2は第 1および第 3の反射手段で全反射となり、 共振器外部には出力され ない。 本実施の形態では波長選択手段 7により共振器内で増幅されたレーザ光の —部を外部に取り出す。 つぎに波長選択手段 7の動作について詳しく説明する。 共振器内を周回する共振光 6は偏光子 8で透過するために p偏光に規定される c ただし偏光回転手段 9で一部偏光が回転し、 s偏光成分が発生して偏光子 8で共 振器外部に取り出される。 偏光子 8に z軸負方向から入射する光強度を 1とする と、 波長選択手段 7によって取り出される光強度は以下の(6 )式で表される。
P t = s 1 η 2(δ / 2 ) : 5=(2 ττΔη■ L9)/A (6) ここで、 Δηは複屈折量、 L9は偏光回転手段 9の ζ軸方向の厚み、 えは波長で ある。 この取り出される光強度の割合は出力結合量と呼ばれる。 図 6に(6)式を 計算した典型的な波長に対する出力結合量を示す。 図 6のように出力結合量は波 長によって周期的に変動する。 その周期(F SR : 自由スぺクトル領域)は (ハツ ト)え 2/(Δη · L)で表される。 (6)式より、 Δηまたは L (ここでは L9)を変化 させることで波長に対する出力結合置を調節することができる。 そこで、 人 1モ 一ドでのえ 1およびえ 2での出力結合量をそれそれ T 11、 T 21とし、 ん2モ ードでの久 1およびえ 2での出力結合量をそれそれ T 12、 T 22とすると、 え
1のみを発振させるえ 1モ一ド時に発振に必要な出力結合条件は以下の(7)およ び(8)式で表される。

2 g,L2<2 α2-1η(1-Τ12) (10) λ 1モードと人 2モードとのスィヅチングには Δηかもしくは Lを変更すれば よく、 例えば偏光回転手段 9を ζ軸 (共捩器軸)に対して傾けていくことによって、 実効的に Lを長くすることができる。 また、 L iNb03結晶や L iTa03結 晶等の電気光学効果を用いて Δηを電気的に変化させてもよい。 さらに、 温度に よって屈折率が変化することを利用し、 Δηを変化させてもよい。 これらの手法 によりスィツチングを行う機能として反射特性変更手段 9 aを備えている。
なお、 第 1のレーザ媒質 1および第 2のレーザ媒質 2の材料については上記実 施の形態と同様である。
また、 第 2のレーザ媒質 2を用いずに 2波長発振する構成も可能である。 第 1 のレーザ媒質 1が複数の利得ピークをもっか、 広い利得帯域をもつ場合、 え 1ま たは人 2をその利得内で任意に選び、 その際で上記の式を満たす出力結合特性を 有する波長選択手段 7で構成する。 この時、 で励起することによって人 1お よび人2ともに利得を持ち始めるので、 上記の出力結合特性のスィツチングによ り 2波長発振が可能となる。 例えば第 1のレーザ媒質 1の材料として N d : YA G結晶を選択し、 励起波長 λ ρが 8 0 0 nm、 人 1を 9 4 6 n m、 え 2を 1 0 6 4 nmに設定することで、 上記の 2波長発振が可能となる。 ただし、 人 1もしく は入 2のどちらかが先に発振を始めるともう一方の波長における利得は減少する ために 2波長同時発振は起こらない。
また、 上記のレーザ媒質の例として、 N d : YA G結晶と Y b : Y A G結晶以 外の組み合わせをあげたが、 他の N dや Y bを添加したレーザ媒質等において上 記の条件式を満たす媒質であれば同様の効果を示す。
また、 前記実施の形態 1での記述と同様に、 本実施の形態の構成により得られ るレ一ザ出力 (図 5の偏光子 8の外部への出力)に図 4に示すのと同様な波長変換 素子 7 0 (図 5には図示省略)を備えることにより、 第 2高調波 2波長出力が得ら れる。 詳細については前記実施の形態と基本的に同様であり、 これにより青色と 緑色のレ一ザ光が得られることになる。
実施の形態 3 .
本実施の形態による固体レーザ装置は一つの共振器および一つの励起光源とレ、 う構成で、 2種類の異なる波長 (人 1および λ 2 )を個別または同時に出力する。 波長分離手段を用いて、 人 1のみを発振させる反射手段と人 2のみを発振させる 反射手段を個別に用いることにより、 一つの励起光源で 2波長をそれそれ出力す る構成を成す。
図 7はこの発明の実施の形態 3による固体レ一ザ装置を示す構成図である。 な お、 この実施の形態 3の構成要素のうち実施の形態 1および実施の形態 2の固体 レーザ装置の構成要素と共通するものについては同一符号を付し、 その部分の説 明を省略する。
図 7において、 第 4の反射手段 1 1は第 2の反射手段 4および第 3の反射手段
1 0と同じ配置をとる。 第 4の反射特性 1 1の反射特性は波長え 1のみを発振さ せる条件を満たしており、 上記の実施の形態 1記載の(1 )式の条件式をみたす反 射率 R l 1を有している。 波長分離手段 1 2は波長え 1の光に対しては透過し、 波長人 2の光に対しては反射する特性を有し、 共振器軸上に y軸を回転中心とし て傾いて配置されている。 第 5の反射手段 1 3は波長分離手段 1 2の反射光軸に 対して入射面が垂直に配置されている。 第 5の反射特性 1 3の反射特性は 1 2の みを発振させる条件を満たしており、 上記の実施の形態 1記載の(3 )式の条件式 をみたす反射率 R 2 2を有している。 なお、 第 4の反射特性 1 1および第 5の反 射手段 1 3が第 1および第 2の分離反射手段を構成する。 また、 反射特性を切り 換えるために波長分離手段 1 2を回転させる反射特性変更手段 1 2 aが設けられ ている。
次に動作について説明する。 励起光が第 1のレーザ媒質 1に吸収されるまでは 実施の形態 1と等しい動作を行う。 波長え 1の光は波長分離手段 1 2を透過する ために光路 1 1 Aを通る光路が選択される。 従って第 4の反射手段 1 1と第 1の 反射手段 3との間で共振し、 第 1のレーザ媒質 1によって増幅される。 第 4の反 射手段 1 1では先に示すようにえ 1の発振条件をみたす反射特性を有しているの で、 え 1のレーザ光が外部に出力される。 波長 λ 2の光は波長分離手段 1 2を反 射するために光路 1 3 Αを通る光路が選択される。 従って第 5の反射手段 1 3と 第 1の反射手段 3との間で共振し、 波長; 1の光を吸収した第 2のレ一ザ媒質 2 で増幅される。 第 5の反射手段 1 3では先に示すように λ 2の発振条件をみたす 反射特性を有しているので、 え 2のレーザ光が外部に出力される。
なお、 第 1のレーザ媒質 1および第 2のレーザ媒質 2の材料につては上記実施 の形態と同様であり、 N d : ¥ 結晶と¥ 13 : Y A G結晶の組み合わせだけで なく、 他の N dや Y bを添加したレーザ媒質等において上記の条件式を満たす媒 質であれば同様の効果を示す。 また共振器内部に共振光の偏光を規定するための 偏光子 8 (図 5参照)を新たに配置することにっても上記実施の形態と同様に可能 である。
また、 前記実施の形態 1での記述と同様に、 本実施の形態の構成により得られ るレーザ出力 (図 7の第 4の反射特性 1 1および第 5の反射手段 1 3の外部への 出力)に図 4に示すのと同様な波長変換素子 7 0 (図 7には図示省略)をそれそれ 備えることにより、 第 2高調波 2波長出力が得られる。 詳細については前記実施 の形態と基本的に同様であり、 これにより青色と緑色のレ一ザ光が得られること になる。
実施の形態 4 . 本実施の形態による固体レーザ装置は、 一つの共振器および一つの励起光源と いう構成で 2種類の異なる波長 (人 1および入 2 )を個別または同時に出力する。 共振器を成す反射手段の一つの反射特性を電気的に切り替えることによって、 入 1とえ 2の波長スィツチングを行う。
図 8はこの発明の実施の形態 4による固体レ一ザ装置を示す構成図である。 な お、 この実施の形態 4の構成要素のうち実施の形態 1から実施の形態 3の固体レ 一ザ装置の構成要素と共通するものについては同一符号を付し、 その部分の説明 を省略する。
第 6の反射手段 1 4は第 1の反射手段 3とで共振器を構成するように z軸上に 配置されており、 入射面および出射面には I 1および λ 2を反射する反射コ一テ イングが施されている。 従って、 第 6の反射手段 1 4はエタロン効果により透 過,反射特性に波長依存性をもち、 両面の反射率を Rとすると反射率は以下の ( 1 0)式で表される。
P t = {4 R sin 2 (2n 7TL/ λ)}/{(ΐ - R) 2 + 4 R sin2(2n7TL/A)} ( 1 1 ) ここで nは屈折率、 Lは光伝播方向の反射コーティング間の厚みである。 この式 から分かるように波長人に対して反射 ·透過特性は周期的な変化をする。 その周 期 F S Rは以下の(1 2 )式で表される。
△ λ =え2 / 2 n L ( 1 2 ) 従って、 屈折率 nもしくは厚み Lを変化させることにより反射特性を自由に設定 することができる。 材質は電気光学効果を有する結晶が用いられており、 例えば L N結晶 (LiNb03結晶)や L T結晶 (LiTa03結晶)などが適用できる。 電気光学効 果は図 8に示すような例えば交流電源からなる電界印加手段 1 7により外部から 電場 (電界)を印加することにより屈折率が変化する効果である。 本実施の形態で は電界を図 8で示すような X軸方向に印加し、 共振光も X軸方向に振動する偏光 をもつように設定する。 その時、 第 6の反射手段 1 4を通過する共振光が受ける 屈折率変化 Δ ηは(1 3 )式で表される。
△ n =— (l/2) r n 3 E ( 1 3) ここで、 rは電気光学定数、 nは屈折率、 Eは電界である。 従って、 第 6の反射 手段 1 4に電気光学効果をもつ結晶を用いることで、 電気的 (電界を印加するこ とで)に屈折率、 つまり反射特性を変化させることができる。 図 9に本実施の形 態における第 6の反射手段 1 4の反射特性を示す。 図 9において R E 3 (実線)が 入 1モードでの第 6の反射手段 1 4の反射特性であり、 R E 4 (破線)がえ 2モー ドでの反射特性である。 人 1モードにおいて波長人 1および; I 2の反射率は( 1 ) および(2 )式の条件式を満たす。 またえ 2モードにおいて波長 λ 1およびえ 2の 反射率は(3 )および (4)式の条件式を満たす。 第 6の反射手段 1 4への電界をォ ン一オフすることにより、 R E 3と R E 4のスイッチングを行う。 また G Β 1、 G B 2がそれそれ第 1のレーザ媒質 1および第 2のレーザ媒質 2の利得帯域であ る。
次に動作について説明する。 励起光が第 1のレーザ媒質 1に吸収されるまでは 実施の形態 1と等しい動作を行う。 え 1モードでは、 第 6の反射手段 1 4が図 9 の R E 3のような上記の反射特性をもっために、 波長え 1の共振器内部パワーは 増大し発振に至る。 人 2は(4)式の条件を満たすために発振は抑えられる。 入 2 モ一ドでは、 第 6の反射手段 1 4が図 9の R E 4のような上記の反射特性をもつ ために、 波長え 2の共振器内部パワーは増大し発振に至る。 え 1も共振器内部パ ヮ一は増大するが、 発振条件までには至らずに抑えられる。
なお、 発振波長をより選択するために共振器内部に波長選択素子を新たに配置 してもよい。 図 1 0に波長選択素子 1 5を配置した構成図を示す。 波長選択素子
1 5は波長え 1とえ 2の光のみ 1 0 0 %透過し、 第 1のレ一ザ媒質 1および第 2 のレ一ザ媒質 2の利得帯域付近にあるその他の波長は全て反射する波長特性を有 している。 また共振器軸(ζ軸)に対して y軸を回転中心として入射面と出射面が 垂直より傾いて設置されているため、 人 1とえ 2以外の反射された光が再び共振 器軸上に進入して発振しないような構成となっている。 また図 1 1に図 1 0のよ うな構成をとつた時の第 6の反射手段 1 4の反射特性 R E 5、 R E 6、 各レーザ 媒質の利得帯域 G B 1、 G B 2および波長選択素子 1 5の透過特性 Sを示す。 入
1モードにおいて、 波長選択素子 1 5がない場合は第 1のレーザ媒質 1の利得帯 域内で最もロスが少ない波長で発振するが、 波長選択素子 1 5があるために波長 入 1以外の波長は共振器内を周回せずに発振波長 λ 1規定される。 同様に λ 2モ 一ドにおいても発振波長; I 2に規定される。 3 006010 以上のように、 本実施の形態 4によれば電気光学効果を有するエタ口ン材料を 共振器の反射手段に用いたため、 発振波長を 2タイプ (人 1とえ 2 )にスィッチン グすることができる。 また、 本構成によるスイッチングは電気的に反射特性を変 更する構成なので共振器の光軸ずれ等の問題は全く起きず、 且つ高速のスィツチ ングが可能である。
また共振器内部に波長選択素子を配置したので、 波長選択素子の透過特性に沿 つて発振波長を任意に、 且つ厳密に設定することができる。
また、 第 2のレーザ媒質 2を用いずに 2波長発振する構成も可能である。 第 1 のレーザ媒質 1が複数の利得ピークをもっか、 広い利得帯域をもつ場合、 え 1ま たは人 2をその利得内で任意に選び、 その際で上記の式を満たす反射率を有する 第 6の反射手段 1 4で構成する。 詳細については前記実施の形態の場合と基本的 に同様である。
また、 第 1のレーザ媒質 1および第 2のレーザ媒質 2の材料につても上記実施 の形態と同様である。 また共振器内部に共振光の偏光を規定するための偏光子 8 (図 5参照)を新たに配置することにっても前記実施の形態と同様に可能である。 また、 前記実施の形態 1での記述と同様に、 本実施の形態の構成により得られ るレ一ザ出力 (図 8、 1 0の第 6の反射手段 1 4の外部への出力)に図 4に示すの と同様な波長変換素子 7 0 (図 8、 1 0には図示省略)をそれそれ備えることによ り、 第 2高調波 2波長出力が得られる。 詳細については前記実施の形態と基本的 に同様であり、 これにより青色と緑色のレーザ光が得られることになる。 産業上の利用の可能性
この発明では一つの共振器および一つの励起光源という構成で 2種類の異なる 波長のレーザ光を個別または同時に出力する固体レーザ装置を提供することで、 小型、 低コスト化が図られ、 さらにこれを波長変換することで青色、 緑色のレー ザが得られる。

Claims

請 求 の 範 囲
1 . 同軸上に配置され、 励起により蛍光を発光する 1つまたは複数の固体レ一 ザ媒質と、
上記固体レーザ媒質と同軸上で、 かつ上記固体レーザ媒質の両外側に配置され、 上記蛍光のうち軸方向に発生した光成分を共振させる第 1および第 2の反射手段 と、
上記固体レ一ザ媒質の 1つを励起する励起光源と、
を備え、 上記第 2の反射手段は、 少なくとも 1つの波長に対してそれぞれ所定 の反射率を有することを特徴とする固体レーザ装置。
2 . 上記第 2の反射手段は、 第 1の波長に対して発振条件を満たすとともに第 2の波長に対しては発振条件を満たさない第 1の反射特性と、 上記第 2の波長に 対して発振条件を満たすとともに上記第 1の波長に対しては発振条件を満たさな い第 2の反射特性とを有し、 かつ上記第 1の反射特性と上記第 2の反射特性とを 任意にスィツチングする反射特性変更手段を有することを特徴とする請求の範囲 第 1項に記載の固体レーザ装置。
3 . 上記固体レーザ媒質は、 上記励起光源によって励起され、 第 1の波長を発 光する第 1の固体レーザ媒質と、 上記第 1の固体レーザ媒質により発光した上記 第 1の波長により励起され、 第 2の波長を発光する第 2の固体レーザ媒質を有す ることを特徴とする請求の範囲第 1項または第 2項に記載の固体レーザ装置。
4 . 上記固体レーザ媒質は、 上記励起光源によって励起され、 第 1の波長およ び第 2の波長を発光する 1つの固体レーザ媒質を有することを特徴とする請求の 範囲第 1項または第 2項に記載の固体レーザ装置。
5 . 上記第 2の反射手段は、
上記固体レーザ媒質と同軸に配置され、 上記第 1の波長および第 2の波長に対 してそれぞれ任意に偏光を回転させる偏光回転手段と、
上記偏光回転手段と上記固体レーザ媒質との間に同軸上に配置され、 所定の偏 光成分は通過させるとともに上記所定の偏光とは垂直に振動する偏光成分は反射 させる偏光選択手段と、 上記偏光回転手段と上記偏光選択手段との外側に同軸上に配置され、 上記第 1 の波長および第 2の波長に対して全て反射する全反射手段と、
を有したことを特徴とする請求の範囲第 2項に記載の固体レ一ザ装置。
6 . 上記偏光回転手段の軸方向の長さまたは屈折率を変更させる反射特性変更 手段を有することを特徴とする請求の範囲第 5項に記載の固体レーザ装置。
7 . 上記偏光回転手段は上記固体レーザ媒質の軸と共振する光の偏光面とで形 成される面と垂直な軸を中心として回転することを特徴とする請求の範囲第 5項 に記載の固体レーザ装置。
8 . 上記反射特性変更手段が上記偏光回転手段の温度を変化させて屈折率を変 更させることを特徴とする請求の範囲第 6項に記載の固体レーザ装置。
9 . 上記第 2の反射手段は、
上記固体レーザ媒質と同軸上に配置され、 第 1の波長は透過するとともに第 2 の波長は反射する特性を有した波長分離手段と、
上記波長分離手段の外側に配置され、 上記第 1の波長に対して所定の反射率を 有した第 1の分離反射手段と、
上記波長分離手段から反射される上記第 2の波長が通る光軸上に配置され、 上 記第 2の波長に対して所定の反射率を有した第 2の分離反射手段と、
を有することを特徴とする請求の範囲第 1項または第 2項に記載の固体レ一ザ
1 0 . 上記波長分離手段を回転させる反射特性変更手段を有することを特徴と する請求の範囲第 9項記載の固体レーザ装置。 ,
1 1 . 上記第 2の反射手段は、 電気光学効果を有する材料から形成されており、 かつ上記固体レーザ媒質の軸に垂直な 2面に光を反射する光反射面が施されたェ 夕ロン結晶から成り、 さらに上記エタロン結晶に電界を印加して反射特性を変更 する電界印加手段を有しすることを特徴とする請求の範囲第 1項または第 2項に 記載の固体レーザ装置。
1 2 . 上記第 2の反射手段は、 電界を印加しない場合は第 1の波長に対して発 振条件を満たすとともに第 2の波長に対しては発振条件を満たさない第 1の反射 特性を有し、 電界を印加した場合に上記第 2の波長に対して発振条件を満たすと ともに上記第 1の波長に対しては発振条件を満たさない第 2の反射特性を有する ことを特徴とする請求の範囲第 11項に記載の固体レーザ装置。
13. 上記第 2の反射手段は、 電気光学効果を有する材料から形成されており、 かつ上記固体レーザ媒質の軸に垂直な 2面に光を反射する光反射面が施されたェ 夕口ン結晶から成り、 さらに上記エタ口ン結晶に電界印加して反射特性を変更す る電界印加手段を有し、
さらに上記第 2の反射手段と上記固体レ一ザ媒質との間に同軸上に共振させる 第 1の波長および第 2の波長を透過させる波長選択素子を配置したことを特徴と する請求の範囲第 1項または第 2項に記載の固体レーザ装置。
14. 上記第 2の反射手段は、 電界を印加しない場合は第 1の波長に対して発 振条件を満たすとともに第 2の波長に対しては発振条件を満たさない第 1の反射 特性を有し、 電界を印加した場合に上記第 2の波長に対して発振条件を満たすと ともに上記第 1の波長に対しては発振条件を満たさない第 2の反射特性を有する ことを特徴とする請求の範囲第 13項に記載の固体レーザ装置。
15. 上記波長選択素子は、 上記固体レーザ媒質の軸に対してその入射面と出 射面が傾いて設置されていることを特徴とする請求の範囲第 13項に記載の固体 レーザ装置。
16. 上記第 1の固体レーザ媒質が Nd (ネオジゥム)原子添加の Y (イツトリ ゥム)系素材であり、 上記第 2の固体レ一ザ媒質は Y b (イツテルビゥム)原子添 加の Y (ィットリウム)系素材であることを特徴とする請求の範囲第 3項に記載の 固体レーザ装置。
17. 上記第 1の固体レーザ媒質が Nd : YAG(Y3A15012)結晶であり、 上記第 2の固体レーザ媒質は Yb: YAG結晶であることを特徴とする請求の範 囲第 3項に記載の固体レーザ装置。
18. 上記固体レーザ媒質が Nd: YAG(Y3A15012)結晶であることを 特徴とする請求の範囲第 4項に記載の固体レ一ザ装置。
19. 上記第 2の反射手段の外側に同軸上に配置された、 発振により上記第 2 の反射手段から取り出された第 1および第 2の波長のレ一ザ光の波長を高調波の 波長に変換する波長変換手段を備え、 青色および緑色レーザを発生することを特 徴とする請求の範囲第 1項または第 2項に記載の固体レ一ザ装置。
