Pour augmenter la stabilité du catalyseur on a introduit dans la couche à activité catalytique, outre le platine et le palladium, des composés d'oxydes complexes de métaux basiques tels que le lithium, le sodium, le magnésium, le baryum, le plomb, le lanthane, le cérium, le bismuth, et de métaux de transition tels que le nickel, le cobalt, le manganèse, le vanadium, le niobium, le molybdène, le tungstène. Le support poreux modulaire est constitué d'une céramique poreuse résistant aux acides à base d'oxydes d'aluminium, de bore, de phosphore, de silicium, sous la forme d'un module ou d'un filtre. Le modèle d'utilité allie les fonctions d'un catalyseur stable à trois fonctions et d'un filtre accumulateur de particules solides de suie et de composés d'acide sulfurique; il permet d'effectuer la régénération catalytique du filtre à des régimes moyens et élevés du moteur. On peut utiliser ce catalyseur en combinaison avec une recirculation partielle des gaz d'échappement purifiés pour réduire les émanations de gaz toxiques et de particules de métaux lourds de moteurs diesel.
