  • a method of manufacturing a fire retardant wallcovering according to the first aspect of the invention and comprising the steps of pasting one side of each of two sheets of paper with a layer of fire-retardant paste, the adhesive layers being continuous and coextensive over the surface of the sheets of paper; adhering each sheet of paper to one or other side respectively of a fire-resistant sheet; pressing the adhered layers together to form a unitary laminated wallcovering; and heating the adhered layers to dry the paper layers and cure the paste.
  • the method comprises the additional step of impregnating the outer paper layers with a fire-retardant size and permitting the size to dry prior to the paper layers being pasted and adhered to the metal foil.

  • a fire retardant wallcovering according to the invention comprises a wallcovering which can be used to encapsulate fire hazards such as multiple paint layers and also to provide fire retardant protection to other surfaces such as conventional plasterboard and other sound surfaces to which it can be applied, preferably using a fire retardant paste.
  • the wallcovering is a laminated covering comprising a fire-resistant inner layer, such as a metal foil or an absorbent fibrous sheet which has been impregnated with a fire-retardant material, to each side of which is adhered an outer layer of paper, such as a conventional lining wallpaper.
  • the adhesive comprises a fire-retardant paste that is applied to the paper layers in a continuous and coextensive fashion so that a unitary laminated wallcovering is formed.
  • the outer paper layers comprise paper which have themselves been impregnated with a fire-retardant size.
  • the fire-retardant paste preferably comprises a mixture of a conventional wallpaper paste to which fire retardant salts are added. Such salts may be added in aqueous solution and therefore used to mix paste granules to form the paste to be used. Typically, after mixing the paste comprises 15% fire-retardant salts.
  • Fire retardant salts suitable for use in the paste are those manufactured by Phoenix Fire Inhibitor Limited trading as PFI Solutions of Ellesmere Port, United Kingdom under the trade mark PBA.
  • Such salts are designed to give off nitrogenous gases when heated to a high temperature so that they tend to quench fire and inhibit flash-over from occurring.
  • a fire retardant size comprising a mixture of a fire retardant water miscible composition and starch.
  • the fire retardant composition may also comprise the fire retardant salts used in the paste in an aqueous solution.
  • the size preferably comprises 15% fire retardant salts .
  • the inner layer is to comprise a fibrous material, such as paper, fabric, or non-woven material then this also is impregnated with a fire-retardant material, which may be similar to the fire retardant size.
  • the fire-resistant sheet comprises either a scrim which has been impregnated with fire-retardant salts or a 50 micron aluminium foil.
  • the fire retardant wallcovering 1 can be manufactured as follows.
  • the outer paper layers 2, which typically comprise conventional lining paper are preferably pretreated by being passed between coating rollers and coated on both sides with a fire-retardant size.
  • the size comprises a mixture of fire retardant salts and starch, as described above.
  • the size impregnates the paper 2 which is then passed through an oven to dry it before being wound around two rolls 3, 4. It is possible to use this paper 2 as a fire-retardant lining paper on its own account but in accordance with the present invention can be used to manufacture the fire- retardant wallcovering as follows.
  • the rolls 3, 4 are mounted on two side-by-side de- coiling stands 5.
  • a third de-coiling stand 6 is loaded with a roll of fire-resistant sheet material 7, such as, for example, 50 micron aluminium foil or fire-resistant scrim as aforesaid, and located between the two stands 5.
  • the paper 2 on both of the rolls 3 and 4 is then de-coiled and pasted by being passed through one or other of two driven pasting stations 8.
  • the paper 2 is driven through the station 8 by being passed through two drive rollers 9 before being coated on its inner side, which is that facing a length of sheet material 7 being de-coiled from the third stand 6, with a layer of fire-retardant paste by a pasting roller 10.
  • the pasting rollers 10 of the stations 8 are arranged so that the adhesive paste layers applied to the paper 2 are continuous and coextensive over the whole of the inner surfaces of the paper 2.
  • the paste comprises a mixture of a conventional wallpaper paste to which fire retardant salts are added.
  • the pasted paper 2 is then adhered to one or other side respectively of the sheet material 7 being de-coiled from the stand 6 to form a laminate with the material 7 located between the outer paper layers 2 by passing it through the nip of a pair of nip rollers 11.
  • the resulting laminate 12 is then pressed further by being passed between two embossing rolls 13 to ensure total adhesion between the layers.
  • the embossing rolls 13 produce a stipple imprint to increase to point pressure loading the pressure between the rolls 13.
  • the embossed laminate 12 is passed through an oven 14 to dry it and to cure the paste layers. After drying, the resulting laminate wallcovering 1 is ready for use. Alternatively, it may then be printed with a decoration on one side to resemble conventional wallpaper.
  • the wallcovering 1 can be hung in the same manner as a normal wallpaper or similar wallcovering and used to encapsulate surfaces which have been overpainted many times using conventional surface paint.
  • the wallcovering 1 is applied using a fire-retardant paste such as that previously described. Fire-retardancy is increased if prior to encapsulation of the painted surfaces by the wallcovering 1, they are first primed using a conventional water-based primer to which 15% fire-retardant salts such as described above have been added. Once dry, the primed surface can then be covered with the wallcovering 1. If the wallcovering 1 is printed, it can be hung in the same manner as a conventional wallpaper.
  • the wallcovering 1 is unprinted, it can then be painted with British Standard Class "0" paints and primers.
  • a similar fire- retardant primer to that described above may be used before the application of a top coat comprising a conventional water-based paint.

Abstract

L'invention concerne un papier peint mural ignifuge comprenant une feuille résistant au feu dotée de parois sur chacune desquelles est collée une couche extérieure de papier au moyen d'une feuille adhésive. Ces couches adhésives contiennent une pâte ignifuge et sont appliquées de manière à être continues et coextensives avec chaque feuille adjacente résistant au feu et avec les couches de papier de manière à obtenir un papier peint mural laminé et unitaire. Ce papier peint mural peut ensuite servir à recouvrir des surfaces qui ont reçues plusieurs couches de peinture au moyen de peintures de surface conventionnelles afin d'obtenir un papier peint ignifuge sans qu'il ne soit nécessaire d'ôter les anciennes couches de peinture. Cette couche résistant au feu comprend, de préférence, soit une feuille métallique, soit une feuille en fibres absorbante qui a été imprégnée d'un matériau ignifuge.
