Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method for configuring a terminal, e.g. a telephone that can be connected to a telecommunications network and that can be configured with regard to its performance features and / or performance features of the telecommunications network.
- a terminal e.g. a telephone that can be connected to a telecommunications network and that can be configured with regard to its performance features and / or performance features of the telecommunications network.
- the present invention also relates to a telecommunication system with terminals that can be connected to it, e.g. Telephones which can be configured with regard to their performance features and / or performance features of the telecommunications network.
- the providers of telecommunication networks offer users, for example the telephone customers, performance features of terminals, which are made available in the telecommunication network and perform certain additional services via the basic use of the respective terminal.
- Such features are, for example, for a three-party conference, brokering, inquiry, call diversion, answering machine inquiry, etc.
- These features can be called up or set by the user of the telecommunications network if required.
- the features are typically called up using keyboard shortcuts, which are, however, unclear and difficult to remember.
- the type of calls for example the sequence of the keys of the shortcut, can be different for different telecommunication networks, possibly even in different areas of the same network.
- the calls to the features can be programmed as macros.
- certain function keys can be assigned by the user with the necessary shortcuts.
- Some end devices sen additional own features that serve to simplify the operation of the terminal, but are not supported as such by the telecommunications network, such as a phone number memory located in the terminal.
- the configuration of the end device i.e.
- the programming of the performance features requires a relatively high commissioning effort, since the input of the programming is usually comparable to the illustration of the network performance features; all the more as both the function keys available and the way in which they are programmed generally differ from device to device.
- the configuration e.g. in the event of incorrect operation or by resetting the terminal to the delivery state. In cases such as a larger system, the configuration is lengthy and therefore all the more annoying because each individual terminal device has to be configured with the same features.
- the commands for configuration processing are entered via the same terminal whose configuration is being processed.
- the method is carried out in an analog telecommunications network.
- the signals transmitted via the connection are used with a signaling method for transmitting digital signals, e.g. according to a CCITT standard.
- the configuration processing is voice-controlled.
- configuration processing is carried out first after entering an access authorization, e.g. a password.
- a configuration server for the purpose of carrying out the configuration processing of the terminals is set up to accept and process the commands given by the user to send signals for configuration processing to the terminals on the basis of this input.
- the configuration server is set up to initiate the establishment and / or disconnection of the connection to the terminal used for configuration processing.
- the configuration server is equipped with a memory for accommodating a number of basic configurations and is set up to open a basic configuration which has been selected by the user in response to a corresponding command given by the user to transfer the terminal.
- the configuration server is equipped with a language ch recognition unit and the commands given by the user are voice commands that can be used for processing by the configuration server after receipt and evaluation by the voice recognition unit.
- configuration server is set up in such a way that configuration processing can be carried out by entering an access authorization, e.g. a password that can be activated.
- the configuration server is equipped with a configuration memory and is set up in such a way that the configuration of a terminal device or a specific part of it can be read in, stored in the configuration memory and opened from there a corresponding command given by the user can later be transferred to the same or a different terminal.

- FIG. 2a shows a flowchart which illustrates a possible process for an initial configuration of a terminal
- FIG. 2b shows a further flow chart, which represents a possible process for a configuration backup.
- the embodiment of the invention described below is concerned with a system for remote configuration in a public analog telephone network.
- Figure 1 shows the essential components of such a system.
- a configuration server S is, for example, a computer that was set up specifically for this purpose and is equipped with a data transmission unit DSS and a data reception unit DES for this purpose.
- a connection from the server S to the network T is established via the units DSS and DES.
- the interface between the server S and the network T is advantageously designed so that several telephone connections can be maintained at the same time.
- the instructions of the user are received by the server S, information and / or input requests are output by the server S, and configuration signals are exchanged between the terminal TE and the server S.
- the instructions of the user can be entered most easily via the dial pad of the terminal, but other ways are also possible, e.g. If the configuration server is equipped with a voice recognition VE, the instructions can also be entered orally by the user.
- the messages from the server can e.g. as sound recordings or via a vocoder VS "directly" to the user, or indirectly via the terminal to e.g. an ad.
- Each remotely configurable terminal TE has a data reception unit DEE and a data transmission unit DSE, which correspond to the transmission unit DSS or reception unit DES of the server S.
- Signals 1 and 2 are exchanged via the connection between terminal TE and server S, contain the configuration data and commands for configuration processing and are shown symbolically in FIG. 1 as square-wave signals. represents are.
- acoustic signals can be exchanged as with ordinary telephone traffic.
- the signals that are used for configuration processing are separated from the usual acoustic signals on the receiving side or coded into the acoustic signals on the transmitting side.
- the configuration signals are processed in the terminal for setting, querying or changing the configuration in the memory K of the terminal TE, while the acoustic signals are used for communication with the user via the microphone M and the loudspeaker L.
- the configuration server S can be dialed from any terminal in the telephone network; only one terminal TE is shown in FIG.
- the configuration signals mentioned can be transmitted in any manner of data transmission in the analog telephone network.
- the DTMF frequency signals which are also used in the normal tone dialing traffic, can be used. This possibility is advantageous, for example, in the event that the user of the terminal wants to give his instructions directly from the terminal, since the manufacturer does not have to equip the terminal with an additional device, for example a keyboard with its own signal coding unit.
- CLIP Calling Line Identification Presentation
- the same type of data transmission is used for both signal directions, and one or both signal directions can use other signal transmission methods, whereby an analog signal transmission is also possible. Furthermore, it is conceivable that the type of signal transmission is changed within a configuration process.
- FIG. 2a shows an example of a flowchart of an initial configuration of a terminal, it being shown for each action (right column) from which side this action is carried out (left column).
- a number of basic configurations are stored in the basic catalog GK in the configuration server and are sent to a terminal device as a whole on request. This is particularly useful for an initial configuration, for example.
- the first step is to connect the terminal via the telephone network by selecting the server.
- the server answers with a voice output, for example from a sound recording or a vocoder, and asks the user to select one from the list of available configurations.
- the terminal sends this selection digit to the server as a tone dialing symbol.
- the server receives the signals from the terminal, evaluates them with regard to the selection number, retrieves the corresponding configuration from its memory and sends it to the terminal, using a data format according to the CCITT standard mentioned, which also includes the CLIP The underlying method is used.
- these signals are received by the end device, the configuration data are evaluated and saved, but not yet accepted as valid.
- the terminal indicates that the configuration has been received and asks the user about Display field as to whether this configuration should now be activated.
- the next step is up to the user, who confirms the new configuration using a specific key on the dial pad.
- the new, confirmed configuration is activated by the end device and the connection to the server is terminated.
- individual features of the configuration can now be specifically adapted by the user to his personal wishes.
- This can e.g. relate to the assignment of individual function keys, which is desired by the user differently than in the selected basic configuration.
- the terminal user can do this locally, i.e. without the involvement of the configuration server.
- the user can also use the help of the configuration server to adapt individual features.
- the server is dialed again by the user, or the connection to the configuration server is not terminated, in modification of the last two steps of FIG. 2a, for example by pressing a certain other key on the dialing keyboard, whereupon the
- Terminal activates the configuration fetched from the server, but the connection remains intact for further feature configuration.
- the server can assist in the configuration of local features, e.g. when programming a phone number memory in the terminal.
- the configuration modified in this way can now differ greatly from the original basic configuration. If the configuration of the terminal is to be repeated, for example after a temporary fault, or because the terminal has been moved from one connection to another, the configuration modified according to personal needs should be reloadable. To do this, it must have been stored in the server beforehand, for which purpose a configuration memory EK is provided in the server. In the configuration memory EK the entire configuration of a terminal, parts of such a configuration and / or different configuration variants can be saved.
- FIG. 2b shows the process of such a configuration storage on the configuration server in a further flow chart. Again, as a first step, the user establishes a connection from the terminal via the telephone network by dialing the server.
- the server logs on in the next step and offers, among other options, the saving of the configuration on the server.
- the user selects this action and enters a PIN protection as access protection for other users.
- the end device sends this PIN lock together with the end device configuration to the server, with the data being transmitted here, for example, using the tone dialing method.
- the entire terminal configuration including the local features or certain parts, for example only the local number memory, is transmitted.
- the server receives this data in the next step and saves it.
- the connection would be disconnected from the user, for example, or other configuration changes would be made. This configuration can now be requested later after the PIN has been entered and loaded from the server onto the terminal or onto another terminal to be configured in the same way.
- the terminal whose configuration is being edited and the device via which the user of the terminal enters its instructions and receives its messages were identical.
- the user of a telecommunications terminal can give the instructions from another location, for example directly via an input console of the configuration server or via another telecommunications terminal, and can accept the messages there.
- This can be advantageous, for example, if a group of end devices is to be configured in the same way.
- the connection of the user can, but does not have to come about via the telecommunications network.
- connection between the user and the configuration server is different from that between the configurable terminal and the server, it usually makes sense if the configuration server independently establishes and disconnects the connection to the configurable terminal; however, the connection between the user and the configuration server is generally initiated by the user.
- the connections of the user and the remotely configurable terminal are independent of time.
- the user gives the configuration server instructions for processing the configuration of one or more end devices as an order, which are only to be executed automatically after the order or at a specific later time and by the server; later the user can query the success of the job.
- the solution according to the invention offers the end device manufacturer the advantage that no country-specific device constellations have to be sold.
- a server can offer the network performance feature configurations available there in different constellations. These servers could also be linked to one another, so that personal configurations can also be exchanged between different networks, so that the user does not experience an uncomfortable and time-consuming changeover to different operating functions, e.g. when changing from one network to another. the performance characteristics or country codes.
