Definitions
- the present invention relates to an electrically conductive ceramic material according to the preamble of the main claim.
- the fixing components are heated in copiers, for example hollow rollers or plates for fixing the toner, generally by means of heating wires or by technically and financially very expensive lamps. Disadvantages of these methods are known to be very long heating phases until the steady-state thermal state is reached and high energy consumption in the unused preparation phase. In the known methods, this thermal inertia stems from the conversion of the light into heat, the necessary heat conduction from the heated surface of the roller to the fixing surface and from the thermal inherent capacities of the radiation sources.
- the filament typically has a high temperature of 1,000 K, which then emits essentially visible and infrared radiation according to its temperature, which is then successively converted to heat on the surface of the fixing elements and conducts heat onto the toner -Fixing element distributed.
- US Pat. No. 5,191,381 describes a thermal fixing device made of a ceramic roller, which consists of so-called "positive temperature coefficient of resistance” materials (PTC materials). These materials typically consist of barium titanate doped with lanthanum or cerium. The degree of doping determines the ferroelectric phase transition that causes the transition from the semiconductor to the insulator.
- PTC materials positive temperature coefficient of resistance materials
- a disadvantage of these materials is their abruptly changing resistance with changing temperatures, the need to metallize these materials on the inside and outside of a toner roller, and the homogeneity which is difficult to achieve, so that when the voltage is applied leads to local warming instead of global warming and their unsatisfactory mechanical properties.
- the poorer mechanical properties, compared to metals, of the materials usually used for toner rollers so far, can lead to bending or breakage of the toner roller.
- a toner roller is known from Japanese application JP 07 06 4425, which consists of a rare earth / chromium oxide ceramic. Because of their method of manufacture and the high-priced and ecologically problematic starting materials to be used, this ceramic cannot be considered economically and ecologically sensible.
- the object of the present invention was to provide an electrically conductive ceramic material which has metallic properties, the electrical conductivity of which can be adjusted by approximately 10 orders of magnitude in the direction of the insulator and, when used, for example, as a thermal fixing device, the disadvantages of the prior art Technically known materials does not have.
- the materials according to the invention are produced by uniformly covering granules made of electrically non-conductive materials, for example granules made of ceramic materials capable of sintering or clay-containing materials containing electrically conductive materials which, in the macroscopic state, have an electrical direct current conductivity of IO 5 to IO 8 S / m .
- electrically conductive materials can be selected from one or more of the following compounds: corrosion-resistant, high-melting metals, carbides, nitrides, carbonitrides or borides of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum and tungsten.
- the electrically conductive particles must be connected to each other in the material (percolation) so that the material is electrically conductive throughout.
- the particle size of the electrically conductive material is in the range from 1 nm to 10 ⁇ m.
- the uniform coating or crosslinking of the granules with these electrically conductive particles makes it possible to reduce the filling factor without impairing the percolation.
- Granules made of sinterable materials are preferably used; aluminum oxide is particularly preferably used. With these materials it should be noted that the granules themselves consist of sinterable crystallites. Porcelain, steatite or cordie can be used as clayey materials. insert rit. The average granule size is 80 to 150 ⁇ m, while the size of the primary crystallites is in the range of a few ⁇ m. The granules are produced from a raw material whose primary crystallite size is in the range from 2 to 3 ⁇ m.
- This raw material is mixed in an aqueous suspension with 1% of an organic binder, preferably polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyethylene glycol (PEG) or cellulose, and then spray-dried, for example.
- PVA polyvinyl alcohol
- PEG polyethylene glycol
- the granule size from 80 to 150 ⁇ m can be reproducibly determined by the viscosity of the slip, the surface tension of the slip, the speed of the centrifugal wheel or the nozzle settings.
- the electrically conductive material preferably Ti (C, N) is added dry to these granules. In a mixing drum, the two components are mixed dry by rotation until the granulate is evenly coated with the conductive material.
- the uniform coating is noticeable by a uniform gray coloration of the mixture.
- the material is brought into the form adapted to the intended use and compacted by axial or isostatic pressing.
- the green bodies obtained in this way are optionally turned over and then sintered in a manner known to the person skilled in the art and adapted to the particular materials, if necessary under a protective gas or in a partial vacuum, or compacted by the action of temperature. If necessary, the component obtained in this way is subjected to a final treatment, for example by means of fine grinding.
- the electrical resistance of the materials according to the invention behaves like a metal when there are temperature changes.
- the material according to the invention can be used for a wide variety of applications. Materials with an electrical conductivity of 10 ⁇ 3 to 10 3 S / m can be used, for example, in thermal fixation devices. lines, as described in US Pat. No. 5,191,381 or Japanese application JP 07 06 4425, can be used.
- a heating roller for a copier made from the material according to the invention can advantageously be used directly for the rapid and economical heating of thermal fixing devices in copying machines with toners.
- a toner roller made of a material according to the invention based on Ba ⁇ Al 2 O 3 / Ti (C, N) was produced with the dimensions: length approx. 270 mm, outer diameter 60 mm, inner diameter 40 mm by isostatic pressing, subsequent green machining and hard machining. The outside diameter was turned over and hard-machined after sintering. Electrical contacts were attached to the end faces of this toner roller. The electrical conductivity of this roller was 12 S / m. Depending on the choice of electrical conductivity, the toner element for heating can be connected directly to any desired voltage value, for example 12 or 230 V, in order to achieve the necessary heating power. The outstanding mechanical properties of the roller produced from the material according to the invention are particularly important for use as a toner roller.
- toner rollers made of steel have an E-module of 210 GPa
- the toner roller produced according to the invention has an E-module of 400 GPa, a value which ensures that this roller deflects less and thus prevents paper jams, for example.
- an electrical power of 600 W a voltage of 230 V and a frequency of 50 Hz
- the toner roller according to the invention only required a heating-up time of 13 seconds.
- Toner rollers made of the material according to the invention can be designed as hollow or solid rollers and can also be provided with an electrically insulating layer on the outside.
- Materials with an electrical conductivity of 10 to 10 ⁇ 8 S / m can be used to avoid static charges and thus to avoid flashovers, for example as a base of X-ray or microwave tubes.
- bases for X-ray or Microwave tubes known from ceramic insulators. If static charges and arcing occur with such tubes, the tube is inevitably destroyed.
- Ver ⁇ application of sockets made of the inventive material with an electrical conductivity of IO -3 to 10 ° ⁇ S / m ⁇ tati ⁇ che the charge is dissipated before ⁇ ie can lead to dangerous arcing.
- Al 2 O 3 powder with a particle size of 2 to 3 ⁇ m was mixed in an aqueous solution with 1% polyvinyl alcohol as the binder and then spray-dried.
- An AI 2 O 3 granulate with an average granule size of 80 to 150 ⁇ m was produced.
- 500 g of these Al 2 O 3 granules and 6.35 g of Ti (C, N) with a particle size of 0.4 ⁇ m (1 volume% of Ti (C, N), based on the Al 2 O 3 granulate) were placed in a 1- Liter wide-mouth bottle filled with about 95 mm diameter and moved for 1 hour at about 60 rpm. After this mixing process, the mixture turned uniformly gray.

Abstract
Description
"positive temperature coefficient of resistance"-Materialien (PTC-Materialien) besteht.
