  • the invention concerns a chemico-phys ical process aimed at preventing attempts to counterfeit documents on paper. It is well known that writing on such documents, especially writing on bank cheques, can be erased and replaced by different writing thus enabling illegal withdrawals to be made from current accounts held by banks, or making possible other operations of an unlawful kind.
  • Purpose of the invention is to ensure better protection for cheques and at the same time simplify the method of doing it, as will be explained below.
  • Subject of the invention is a process for protecting hand written or printed writing on documents made on paper, especially bank cheques and the like.
  • Pressure can be applied to the sheet laid over the document by a rigid blade or some other suitable means, or even by the fingers only.
  • the impregnated sheets can be inserted in the cheque banks between one cheque and the next, and associated to a second protective sheet of paper or some unimpregnated material which is detached when the operation is completed, the purpose of this being to avoid any accidental premature chemical reaction between the impregnated surface and the cheque itself.
  • the above second sheet would preferably consist of an extension of the first sheet, of practically the same length, folded back against the impregnated surface until required.
  • said extension can be unfolded to free the impregnated surface and enable it to adhere to the completed cheque.
  • the second protective sheet can then be detached by tearing along a prepared tear-off line.
  • the chemical could be applied by superimposing over the document a sheet of flexible plastic material impregnated on the superimposing surface with a copolymer thermoplastic polymer of reticulated polyvinyl acetate that turns fluid under heat and hardens when it cools.
  • Simultaneous generation of heat and pressure on the impregnated sheet superimposed over the document to be protected may occur by passing the document and said sheet between a pair of parallel rollers, at least one of which is heated by electric elements, and making them rotate manually or by some automatic means.
  • the pair of rollers may be supported by a box-shaped structure to stand on a table, at least one of the two rollers being connected to the shaft of an electric motor worked by push buttons.
  • Electric feed can be supplied independently by batteries mounted inside the structure, or obtained by plugging it into the mains.
  • Simultaneous generation of heat and pressure on the impregnated sheet superimposed over the document to be ptotected may take place by passing a hand-pressed roller across the impregnated sheet whose active side is superimposed over the document laid out on a flat surface, said roller projecting from a hand-held pocket-sized structure and being heated from inside by electric elements, or else using a rigid body and heat conductor placed at the end of a pocket-sized structure that can be held in the hand or in any case having a handle.
  • Heating elements are contained inside said body.
  • chemicals can be applied to the document by an atomized spray, the document having been previously covered by a stencil with windows cut into it so as to expose only those parts to be chemically treated, especially the amounts and other essential indications , so ap ⁇ lication of chemical may be limited to those parts.
  • the chemicals comprise polymervinylaerylic, phthalie ester, fluoridized wax, ketonic diluent: and chlorinated solvent.
  • the approximate percentages considered most suitable are: polymervinylacrylic 30%, phthalie ester 4%, fluoridized wax 7 % , ketonic diluent 50%, chlorinated solvent 9%.

  • Said sheets 45 46 47 have an extension 48 folded back inside along the edge 45' in order to protect the unused cheques from any chemical action that might come from the impregnated surface.
  • the extension 48 is removed thus freeing the impregnated side of the sheet 45 which is then placed in contact with the cheque 42, as can be seen in Figure 4.
  • a blade or something similar to exercise pressure across the sheet 45 placed over the cheque 42 a chemical reaction is set up between the functional groups of the polymer (N-C-O) and those of the cellulose (O-H) incorporating both the writing and the paper base and giving rise to a kind of cold plasticization or to a practically single body.
  • Fig. 5 shows a pocket-sized machine 50 serving the same purpose as the table-supported machine 20 already described.
  • Said machine 50 comprises a flat box-shaped structure 51 and has a semicylindrical head 52 on the smaller side.
  • This structure contains the electric batteries 53 54 connected by means of the switch 54 to electrical heating elements 55 placed within the semicylindrical body 56 made of heat conducting cement.
  • Said head is covered with a metal lamination 57.
  • Fig. 6 illustrates a mode of applying the chemical mixture as invented by means of an atomized spray of said mixture.
  • the product from the can 76 is then sprayed on as indicated by 86 and in its atomized form will cover the zones 82-85 producing the effects described above.

Abstract

Procédé de protection de documents (42-44) en papier, imprimés ou écrits à la main, tels que notamment des documents de banque et similaires, faisant appel à la superposition, sur les parties devant être protégées, d'une feuille souple (45-47) imprégnée d'un polymère de polyuréthane modifié acrylique. Une pression est produite de façon à assurer, à l'aide d'un procédé de plastification à froid, la stabilité de l'assemblage de la feuille (45-47) sur le document (42-44). Il devient ainsi impossible d'effacer de manière illégale l'écriture sur le document et d'y ajouter une fausse écriture.
