SAFETY-SUPPORT FoR wmoowwuhusus,
spncmcarxon forming part of Beissued Letters Patent in. 12,146, dated August 1 1, 1903 Original No. 559,472, da May Sflsllfi. Application for reissue filed December- 26, 1902- iierial No. 138,597-
To all whom it vita/y concern: Be it known that I, HIRAM K. WiirrNnR, a
States, residing at Ohinois, have invented certain new and useful lmprovenients in Safety-Supports for Window- Cleaners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
. My invention relates to improvements in safety-supports for windowcleaners and like hazardous occupations in elevated positions.
The object of my invention is to not only j support the window-cleaners more securely than heretofore, but by means herein shown I greatly expedite the work done in exposed positions and make said device more durable. The Joelts or jackets heretofore worn by window-cleaners were fastened upon the body of means of buckles or lacing- .Oords so placed that whenever said windowcleaner lost hisfooting the entire strain was thrown upon said fastening, the weakest por- I tion of the apparatus.
Again, the means of adjustment heretofore used in adapting said apparatus to various widths of windows was by means of buckles in connection with leather strap-stays, a means too fragile to.
give a full meas ureof safety. used as stays draw tight and are not readily undone. Clamping arrangements double the stay along its length and limit the lateral movements of the window-cleaner from side to side. Furthermore, heretofore no provision has been made-in said apparatus to re Knots in ropes duce thechafi ng of the stay to a minimum.
' In my Patent No. 474,586, dated May 10,
1.892, I made the stayway (ropcway) in one section through the body of the jacket. In Patent No. 519,365,datod May 8, 189-}, Ishow two smooth aluminium bronze stay -cycs, (rope-eyes.)
vThis I found to be a decided improvement. I now hereinafter show how to bring this feature to a minimum of wear and tear by using a combination of forms designated terrets in constructing myimproved stayway.
In l-atent No. 519,365, 1894, I show stay of said safety-jacket to the so-called permanent fixture (the four bolts placed in each window, two on a side.) To this deissued to me May 8,
vice I add a spring stop-guard that also acts as a toe-guard and, furthermore, acts as a hook that will securely suspend the stay-terminals from. the articles worn by the window cleaner in going from window to window.
a new method. of fastening the- My invention consists in a safetysupportof novel construction having a sling or belt or belt-sling to be worn upon the body, an adjusting-hitch for the rope, (stay,)'a yoke holding in place an antifrictiou-wheel forming one of the several sections, of t e stayway hereinafter more particularly self forth, and an improved terminal for said stay.
Figure l. is a view in perspective, showing in detail my improvements and embodying my invention as I preferably construct and use it. Fig. 2 is also a view in perspective,
showing modifications of my invention.
In Fig. 1, A represents an inner can vas strip folded sidewise and stitched to a width of about four inches and about twenty-eight inches long. of canvas, 1 insert the buckle-pieces N N N-N to the buckles D I) D D. Said buckle-pieces are held in position by the rivets n 'n. n n.
Said rivets also secure the terrets F F, which canare shown attached near the ends of the vas portion of my improved belt.
A is an outer-canvas strip, also folded and sewed, somewhat narrower than A, out about an. inch longer, so that when held by the.
rivets shown in Fig. 1 said inner and outer strips of canvas will form retaining-spaces between then], into which cloths, 650., may be thrust, as at K. 4
A and A are stiff belt-leather shields riv- Into the ends, between. the folds I ctcd to the canvas portion, the function of G, which is rove through the terretF F, placed diate terret.
. obvious that the stay G G in engagement with jacket, and there flanking iton either side by make said belts less adjustable by omitting mate each other over the spine,
.irom being chafcd.
for the same purpose.
the equivalent of a stay-eye or terret. Rivets m 'm hold the billets O (J C C sccurel y. Said billets are adapted to engage with the abovereferred to buckles l) l) D 1). Two of said billets are shown detached from their corresponding buckles. It would not be a departure'from the principle of my invention to the buckling feature that is'shown in a buckled state. This portion of the apparatus could be made fixed ,when thedevice is known, thereby obviating the use of the in; termediate terret E, Fig. 1. 1 There the ends of the canvas portion of my belt-sling approxithere is less liability to'chafing the clothing by the stay upon the endsof the canvas or belly portion.
It would not be a departure from the min. ciples of my invention to have the terrets F F provided with antifriction-wheels, not-would it be a departure from the principles of my invention to use a simple stay-eye having smooth bearings for said stay as an interme- I have hercinbeforc referred to my beltas being asling or belt or belt-sling. It will be the two stayway-sections and the terrcts F and F forms an unbroken circuit intowhich the body of the window-cleaner should be placed. Should the window-cleaner lose his footingwhile encompassed by said improved apparatus and with its stay-terminals attached to their permanent fixtures, it is obvious that he would be held as in a sling and prevented from fallin g, because said F and F sections of the st'ayway would be drawn toward each other (in-the direction of. the spine) by a sort of slip-noose action in proportion to the weight thrown into said apparatus, and, furthermore, thcbillet-s and buckles, because of their intermediate position, instead of sustaining the load precipitated upon said apparatus would be materially relieved of strain. \Vhile at work with the body of window-cleaner resting against said stay, said billets and buckles have a function to perform. They keep said apparatus in position about the body of the windowcleaner. One ot the functions of a tcrret placed intermediate between 1 and b is to protect the clothing It would not be a de-' parture from the principle of myinventiou to place said yoke M, provided with an antitriction-wheel 1', upon the body of the belt or a stay-eye F and F, as shown in Fig. 2,and bring the buckle or lacing parts to the front of the person wearing it. This would be using said antifriction device in a similar mannor in a diilerent location on the belt or jacket I I deem it necessary that said antifriction device be flanked on each side by the stay-eye or terret having a smooth bearingsurfacc on the side toward stay-holder.
the terminal of the stay rove through said tax ret such as presents a-smooth wearing-surface to the stay, no matter what position may be assumed by the window-cleaner, substantially as shown. To have the stay run over the sharpcdges is in a stooping attitude without smooth lateral bearings wouldbe harmful to the'stay. Attached to one of said stay-terminals, intermediate between said stay-terminal H','Fig. 1, and the stay G, I show an improved stayholder linked'to thestay-terminal eye 2. The body I has an elongated piercing through which the stay- G passes,
of the wheel while the cleanerthe end of the latter having an cnlargementJ by virtue of it's splice inclosing the thimble j, which preventsthe escape of the stay from said elongated pierer ing. The part g of said stay is passed under said stay-holder I, where it abuts agaius'tthe under partj of the-link-eye of saidkstayholder. Said stay is now carried upon the opposite side of the contracted body The free end J is now passed under the part of the stay between the elonof the i gated piercing and the part designated g. It 7 is obvious the greater the strain put upon the stay proper the greater will be thc bite or hold of the intertwined stay about the narrow neck stay G to windows of diifcrent widths.
In Figs. 1 and 2 I show terminals H H H ll, consisting of a slot-ted plate .r, provided with a longitudinal slot having. an outlet at the heel. Here said outlet is spanned or bridged by a bench-f orm extension 3 to which is fixed the spring 0. of my PatentNo 519,365 and is adapted to engage with solid-headed lag-screws p p, inserted in the windowirame, 2,11 To this device I now adda ioeext 'ension 71, turned back over the toe end of said slot, forming a stop-guard having a f rec point h. Several functions arise from the proper construction of this extension. \Vhcn of aheight relative to the thickness of the, head of the lag-screw p, (the so-called perma-. .115'
nent fixture) it acts as a ice-guard, and said slotted plate is prevented from making contact upon the adjacent woodwork,as shown in Fig. I, ll".
said point it acts as a stop-guard to spring 0, preventing undue strain upon the tension of said spring, as shown in Fig. 1, I1
. of the stay-holder, thereby forming a safe and strong adjustable hitch by which to adapt the This forms the subject as shown in Fig.
When of a length to overhang the head of the lag-screw in engagement with the toe end of said slot, in
going from window to window, as in grolnet s, as shown in Fig.2, ll,
Having fully-shown and des i-ibed the purposes of my invention, [,ill now in claims point out what I wish lb secure by Letters Patent of the Unitcd States- 1. Inasafetysupport for window-cleaners, I the combination, with a stay and its i-Cl'lllb.
