QOHAUNCEY ALVENZ MURRAY, or CUMBERLAND, WYo nvef SUSPEND ER'S.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed April26,1906- SerialNo. 313,398.
Patented Oct. 23, 1906.
To all whom it, may concern.-
- Be it known that I, CHAUNonY ALVEN MURRAY, a citizen of the United States, residin at Cumberland, in the county of Uinta andtate of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and ,use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in suspenders of that class in which the shoulder-straps are connected with the rear of the trousers by an evener-cord, the different parts or loops of which are held together by a back-web or connecting device.
The object of the invention is to improve the construction and eration of sus enders of this character, and t ereby render t e same more durable and more comfortable for the wearer.
'With' the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and.
claimed. I
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear view of .the back portion of a pair of suspenders embodying the present invention and Figs. 2 and 3 are detail sectional views taken, respectively, on the planes indicated by the lines 2 2 and 3 3 in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes the shoulder-straps; 2, the back stra or web, and 3 the connecting evener-cor which latter is preferably a continuous length of cord or a cylindrical web provided with the usual buttonholes 4 to engage the buttons on the rear of the waistband of a pair of trousers. v
As clearly shown in Fig. 1, the evener-cord is passed through and slides in connections or loops 5 V shoulder-straps, connections or loops 7 8, carried by the u per and lower ends of the back strap or we and connections or loops 9 10, disposed upon the op osite sides of t back strap or web, each 0 said connections 5 6 7 8 9 10, consisting, preferably, of metal plates slotted to receive the straps or webs and formed with a central projection upon which is pivoted .a metal loop or eye to receive the evenei cord. The back strap or web 2 is adjustable in length by means of a 6, carried by the rear ends of the buckle, slide, or the like, 1 1, and its upper end after being passed through the slotted plate of the upper connection 7 is folded downwardly over a transversely-disposed elastic strap or web 12, which carries at its ends the side connections or loops 9 10. This strip of elastic Webbing is retained between the front and rear portions of the upper folded or doubled end of the back-strap y a central vertical row of stitching 13 or by any other suitable fastening means located centrally, so that the ends of the strip 12 may yield laterally when the outer side portions of the cord are drawn upon and straightened, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. .The portion of the back-strap folded over the rear of the strip 12 has its end sewed or stitched at 14 to the front portion of the back-strap, so that the latter forms a protecting and guiding casing or covering for the strip12.
The advantages of this im roved back strap or web will be readily un erstood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. The provision of the elastic strap or web 12 permits the cord to yield to the varying movements of the body of the wearer and secures to him the greatest ease and comfort.
Various change in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In suspenders, shoulder-straps, a doubled back-stra an elastic stri extending transversely t ough the bac -strap, be- 5 tween the sides thereof, guides on said shoulder-straps, back-strap and elastic strip, and an evener engaged wlth sa'id guides;
2. In suspenders, a back-strap having guides at its upper and lower ends, said backguides on the ends of said elastic strip, shoul- 1o 5 der-straps having guides, and an evener engaged with the guides of said back-strap, elastic strip and shoulder-straps, substantially as described.
3. In suspenders, shoulder-straps, a backstrap, a strip of elastic Webbing disposed In testimony whereof I have hereunto set transversely and secured adjacent to its cenmy hand in presence of two subscribing witter upon said back-strap, guides upon said nesses.
shoulder-straps, said back-strap and said CHAUNCEY ALVEN MURRAY. elastic Webbing, and an eveuer engaged with Witnesses: said guides, substantially as shown and de- J. W. BLAOKWOOD,
scribed. GEO. R. SYMEs.
