DESIGN.
W. W. KNIGHT. BUTTON. No. 9,116, Patented Feb. 29,1876.
ci'iii ij '4 virus. PHOTO-UYNOORAPHE UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
WILLIAM W. KNIGHT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
DESIGN FOR BUTTONS.
Specification forming part of Design No. 9,116, dated February 29, 1876; application filed January 28, 1876. [Term of Patent 7 years.]
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. KNIGHT, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented or produced an ornamental Design for Ivory and Bone Buttons, of which the following is a description [n-the drawing, Figure 1 is a face view of the button, and Fig. 2 is a section illustrative of the manner in which the said button is ornamented. 4
Ivory and bone sleeve and other buttons have been ornamented upon the surface by engraved lines filled in with colored cement, and in other cases the surfaces of such ivory buttons have been ornamented by staining in red and black or other colors.
My design relates to the ornamentation of such ivory and bone buttons by lines having undulating or zigzag configurations, and making as a whole an ornamental pattern, recessed into the surface of the ivory or bone through the stained or colored surface thereof, soas to bring out the ornamental efi'ect from the contrast between the natural color of the ivory or bone and the colored surface thereof in the ornamental pattern composed of the zigzag undulating lines.
Ornamental figures composed of lines of the general zigzag character which I employ for the ornamenting of the ivory or bone buttons are known as engine-turned figures when applied to metallic surfaces.
The drawing represents the lines cut into the surface, as at a a, and the colored surface of the ivory at bb; hence the ornamental contrast illustrated in Fig. 1 is produced by the engine-turned lines in the button.
I claim as my invention- The ornamentation of ivory and bone buttons by zigzag lines, forming patterns, recessed in the stained or colored surface, to show the natural color of the material, substantially as described and shown.
Signed by me this 25th day of January, A.
WM. W. KNIGHT. Witnesses:
