UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES T. SLOAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DESIGN FOR BREASTPINS, &c.
Specification forming part of Design No. 8,944, dated February 1, 1876; application filed December 13, 1875. [Term of Patent. 3% years] To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. SLOAN, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented and produced a new and original Design for an Ornament for Jewelry, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
The nature of my design is fully represented in the accompanying drawing, to which reference is made.
My invention consists in a design for an or nament for brcastpins, lockets, and other an ticles of jewelry, containing a cameo center and a black onyx frame or border, which latter is considerably below the central portion of the ornament.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, the central portion A of the breastpin, which article I have selected for illustration, but to which I do not confine myself, is formed of a cameo of any shape but, preferably, oval. Its color may also vary with the description of cameo used. This central portion A is secured by what is known as a box to the frame or border B of the breastpin. I only propose to use a frame or border cut from that substance known as black onyx, and having a fiat or beveled upper surface. The shape of the border may be varied at pleasure without altering the material appearance of the design, and its upper surface may be ornamented with pearls, designs of gold, or any other way desired. The cameo central portion A is supported in the frame B by a box, and is so arranged that the upper surface of the cameo shall be above the frame, this relative posi' lieu of center and border being material in my design. Mosaic ornaments consist in the setting of one stone within the other, but both the inner and outer stones are substantially upon the same level, and the connection between the stones is not made by a box, the edges of which in my design show around the central portion.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is A design for a breastpin or other article of jewelry, consisting of a cameo set in a frame. of black onyx, the surface of the cameo being above that of the black onyx frame or border, substantially as herein described, and shown in the accompanying drawing.
(3. T. SLOAN.
