Description
07448 OR D 14 1241 DESIGN.
P. 1, MARGY.
SLEEVE BUTTON.
No. 14.241. Patented Aug. 28. 1883'.
WI TNEEEEE: IN VEN TUHI UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK I. MARCY, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
DESIGN FOR A SLEEVE-BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 14,241, dated August 28,1883.
Application filed January 2. 1883.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, FREDERICK 1. Dinner, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented and produced a new and original Design for SleeveButtons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my newlydesigned ornamental sleeve-button. Fig. 2 is a view of an oval sleeve-button; Fig. 3, a round, Fig. 4 a square, and Fig. 5 an oblong sleeve-bntton, these figures being deemed necessary to fully illustrate my newly-i nventcd design and the scope thereof.
Heretofore sleeve-buttons have been ornamented by embossing, engraving, and enameling the face. They have also been ornamented by placing a border of precious or other stones around the edge, or by placing a cut stone in the center of the same.
The leading feature of my design consists in placing a stone of any desired form or color on one side, near the edge of the button, and engraving any suitable design on the rest of the face of the button, thereby producing a peculiar and novel effect.
The button shown in Fig. 1 has a cut and faceted stone placed into, one corner of the button and raised above the surface of the same, the rest of the surface being ornamented by engraving. In Fig. 2 a round stone is placed at one end of an oval, and the rest ornamented by engraving. In Fig. 3 a round button has a stone forming a section of the circle, the rest being engraved. In Fig. 4 an oblong stone is set into one corner of the square button, the rest being engraved; and in Fig. 5 an irregular-shaped piece of stone is set into Term of patent 7 years.
the face of an oblong button, the rest being ornamented with suitable designs, either by engraving, stamping, or enameling.
In the drawings, a, a are the stones or jewels, and b b the engraved or otherwise ornamented su rfaees. The stones may be set on a level with the rest of the face, or raised above the same, and in place of the stones, colored enamel may be used. The field or section covered by the stone, the imitation of stone, or the enamel must never be more than half the whole ornamented surface. I prefer to make it considerably less than half the area.
Instead of ornamenting the portion of the face not covered by the stone, the metal may be left smooth or dead-colored, so as to pro duce a very fine effect. Usually I select the stone or enamel of such color as will produce a strong contrast to the rest of the surface; but the difference in color may be dispensed with, and the contrast confined to the difierence in material.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The design for sleeve-buttons, the same consisting of the stone a, placed on one side of the face, and the ornamented portion b, covering the rest of the face of the button.
2. The design for sleeve-buttons, the same consisting in the ornamented face of the button, a sectional part of which is covered by a stone or its equivalent, as described.
3. The design for slcevebuttons, the same consisting of a face ornamented by a stone or its equivalent, placed on the edge or in the corner of the face and covering less than half the surface, as described.
FREDERICK I. MARCY.
