RAISED STONE INQRUSTED LETTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,563, dated January 1, 1889.

Be it known that 1, CHARLES (tosmive, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented an Improve ment in Raised Stone lncrusted Letters; and the following is declared to be a description of the same.

Onyx and other stones for rings and other articles of jewelry have heretofore been cut in various ways and of various shapes. For instance, figures, letters, monograms, &c., have been depressed into the surface of the stone by the cutting known as intaglio, and figu res and heads have been raised from the surface of the stone in the cutting known as rilievo, and gold letters have been incrusted or inlaid into the surface of the stone, and sometimes these gold letters have been set with precious stones.

My improvement relat es to an incrusting or inlaying of gold into the surface of an onyx or other stone for use in a seal-ring or other article of jewelry, the said incrusting having a border of stone around the gold, the surrounding surface of the stone beyond the border line being depressed, so that the incrusted letter and its border are in relief above the main body surface of the stone proper, and the same is a new article of manufacture.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation illustrating my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section at the line so (t represents the onyx or other stone, and the same is shown as curved in form suitable for use in a seal-ring.

1) represents the incrusted gold letter, which is let into and held in the onyx or other stone 'in the manner well known in the trade. This incrustcd gold letter may, if desired, be ornamented with precious stones.

0 represents a border of onyx or other stone,

which border entirely surrounds the edges of the incrusted gold letter, and the surface of this onyx or other stone border is preferably polished and its surface is level with that of the gold incrust-ed letter.

cl represents the surface of the stone around and bet-ween the portions of the gold incrusted letter and its stone border. This portion dis depressed, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 2, so that the gold incrusted letter and its stone border are in relief and raised above the surface (I.

I have shown at e a frame or border to the letter and its backing but the same may or may not be used, at pleasure, as it forms no portion of my invention, the essential feature of said invention being the raised incrusted letter and its stone border.

My invention is not necessarily limited to an iucrusted letter with a stone border; but the same may be an incrusted monogram or flower design with a stone border, and I would remark that as an article of manufacture in jewelry my improvement greatly enhances in appearance and value such articles of jewerly towhich it relates.

I claim as my invention As a new article of manufacture, an onyx or other stone for jewelry, the same having a letter or other design in metal incrusted or inlaid in the stone, said design having a bor-
