L. JAGIBLKY. PROCESS OF ORNAMENTING GOLD SURFACES. No. 407.953. Patented July so, 1889.
- WIT/H8858:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS JAGIELKY, OF NE\V YORK, N. Y.
PROCESS OF ORNAMENTING GOLD SURFACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,953, dated July 30, 1889.
Application filed March 8, 1889. Serial No. 302,522. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS J AGIELKY, of the city, county, and State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Processes of Ornamenting Gold Surfaces, of which the following is a specification.
face of the raised parts, and,-finally, decorating the raised parts with precious stones and engraving the same.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1, 3, and 5 represent front views of a watchcase cap shown in the different stages of or-' namentation according to my improved process; and Figs. 2, 4, and 6 are vertical transverse sections of Figs. 1, 3, and 5, respectively.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In carrying out my invention the gold plate to be ornamentedsuch as is used for watchcases, lockets, rings, bracelets, and other jewelryis first engraved with the outline of the design, as shown in Fig. 1. The metal is then cut away around the design, so as to produce the same in raised part on the plate and integral with the same.
The ground around the raised parts is then matted, as shown in Fig.
3, and the entire surface gilded by electro-' deposition or otherwise. The surfaces of the raised parts are next polished by means of suitable buffing-wheels and the raised parts ornamented by inserting precious stones into the same in the usual manner, after which the raised parts are finished around the stones by engraving them as shown in Fig. 5. In this manner a very ornamental character is imparted to the surfaces of gold jewelry of all kinds and the same finished in a very elaborate and artistic manner.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent- The process herein described of ornamenting the surfaces of gold plates, which consists of the following steps successively performed: first, producing a raised design by cutting out the stock around the design; secondly, matting the cutout ground; thirdly, gilding the entire surface; fourthly, polishing the surface of the raised parts, and, lastly, inserting precious stones into the raised parts and engraving the surface of the raised parts, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS .TAGIELKY. "Witnesses:
PAUL GOEPEL, JOHN ALONZO STRALEY.
