DESIGN.
J. W. MILLER.
SLEEVE BUTTON, &c.
No. 17,591. Patented Sept. 6, 1887.
w I %wmim UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES E. MILLER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
DESIGN FOR A SLE EVE-BUTTON, etc.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 17,691, dated September 6, 1887.
Application filed June 2. 1887. Serial No. 240,102. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. MILLER, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Sleeve Buttons and Like Articles, which design is fully set forth in the following specification.
This design is for the surface ornamentation of sleevebnttonsand other articles ofjewelry, as well as analogous articles not generally classed as jewelry. It is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure Ishows the su rfaee of a sleeve'bntton having the design formed thereon, and Fig. II shows in section the elevations or ridges.
As shown, the surface of the article is covered with a series of cells or depressions ofirregular size and configuration, bounded by curved lines or ridges of varying thickness, and running, regardless of uniformity, in various directions, producing a vermoulu effect.
It is an important feature of the design that the curved ridges or bounding-lines conform to no regular or particular pattern, but produce cells or figures of irregular shape and of varying sizes.
The design is more sharply defined and its efi'ect enhanced when the surface of the depressed parts represents a different color from that of the boundary-lines or ridges, thereby producing a pleasing contrast, which may be varied according to taste.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The design for the surface ornamentation of sleeve-buttons and other articles ofjewelry and analogous articles. as set forth. said design consisting in the series ofirregular depressions of different shapes bounded by curved ridges, as shown and described.
2. The design for the ornamentation of sleeve-buttons and other articles herein described and shown. said design consisting of the series of irregularly shaped and disposed figures bounded by curved lines, the said figures having a'color in contrast to that of the boundary-lines.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES W. MILLER. Witnesses:
JAMES F. HORAN, FREDERICK GELLER.
