Description

DESIGN. J. W. MILLER.
ORNAMENTA'I'ION 0F SLEEVE BUTTONS}, am. No. 17.633. Patented Aug. 16 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES \V. MILLER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
DESIGN FOR THE ORNAMENTATION OF SLEEVE-BUTTONS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 17,633, dated August 16, 1887.
Application filed June 2, 1887. Serial No. 240,101. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, James W. 1\IILLER, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Sleeve-Buttons and Like Articles, which design is fully set forth in the following specification.
lihis design is for the surface ornamentation of sleeve-buttons and other articles of jewelry, as well as analogous articles not generally classed as jewelry. It is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which shows the surface of a sleeve-button having the design formed thereon.
As shown, a number of thin narrow flakes or strips of approxi mately-uniforin length and width, and preferably of difl'erent colors, are disposed in an irregular manner upon the surface of the article, considerable interstices being left between the strips, the surface between the strips being in the aggregate greater than that covered by the strips. The flakes, when thus disposed, produce a crystalline efiect. It is an important feature of the design that these flakes form no regular or particular pattern.
The design is more sharply defined and its efl'ect enhanced when the surface or ground of the article is of a difi'erent color from that of the strips, so that the latter stand out with greater distinctness, and a pleasing contrast is produced, which may be varied according to taste.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The design herein shown for the ornamentation of sleeve-buttons and other articles of jewelry and other analogous articles, the said design consisting of irregularly-disposed narrow oblong flakes of almost uniform length and width, substantially as described and shown.
2. The design shown and set forth for the ornamentation of sleeve-buttons and other articles of jewelry and other analogous articles, the said design consisting of irregularly-disposed narrow oblong flakes of almost uniform length and width and of diflerent colors, the space intervening between and surrounding such flakes being wholly or in part of a color different from that of the strips, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES W. MILLER. Witnesses:
