Description

C. FREDERICI.
Processes of rnamenting Glass.
N01v54,03\. Patented,Augv.`1-1,1874.
A to make and use the same, reference being UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARL EEEDEEIcI, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
. IMPROVEMENT IN FlRCESSES OF ORNAMENTING GLASS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,031, dated August 11, 1874 application tiled November To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL FREDERICI, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ornamental Glass Panes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to which it pertains had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l represents a face view of one side of a'glass pane ornamented according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a face view of the op` posite side.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists inla pane of glass, stained or flashed with different colors on its two sides, and having etched or cut upon its two surfaces similar designs that register with each other, the design on one side being more or less in relief, like a cameo, and that on the other being more or less depressed, like an intaglio, in such a manner that various beautiful effects can be produced.
In carrying out my invention, I take a pane of glass which is stained or'iiashed with different colors-for instance, red on one side and blue on the other, or with any other colors which are suitable for my purpose. On each of the two sides of this pane of glass I produce, by etching or cutting, 'the desired de signs a b, which register with each other, but which are so arranged that the design on the one side, say a, is more or less in relief', like a cameo, and the design on the other side, b
more or less depressed or slinken, like an intaglio. If a pane of glass, prepared as above stated, is held up against the light, the color on one side shows through the depressed parts of the design in the other side, and vice versa,
and a most beautiful and striking effect is produced.
The variety of this eiect can be multiplied by coating the-surfaces of my double-colored glass pane with enamels of various colors, and then cutting the design partly through the enamel to the staining-color only, and partly through the enamel and through the staining color, to the white or uncolored body of the pane of glass.
What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The within-described mode of preparing a plate or pane of glass, by staining or flashing it with any desired color on the one side or surface, and with a different or contrasting color on the opposite side or surface, the said plate or pane "being then etched, ground, cut, or otherwise treated, to produce on the one one side a design or ligure more or less in re lief, like a cameo, and on the opposite side or surface a like design or figure, more-or less depressed, like an intaglio, the design on that side registering with the design on the other side, substantially as and for the purposes herein specified.
CARL FREDERICI.
