IMPROVEMENT IN SIGNS.

specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,788, dated August 12, 1873 application tiled July 1, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES HARRISON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Signs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l is a front view of a sign constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse central section of the same.

This invention consists in 'a sign made of glass or other transparent material, the body or ground of which is rendered opaque by painting or otherwise upon its rear or unexposed surface, while the raised letters or figures ofthe same are left transparent, and are ornamented by means of knobs, buttons, or other suitable ornaments, which are arranged on the surface thereof in such a manner that said letters or figures appear in bold relief, and by these means a highly ornamental and useful sign is produced at a small cost.

In the drawing, the letters A A designate two parts or sections of 'my sign, which is made of glass or other transparent material, and on said parts are formed the letters or characters B B, which are in relief, being made to project above the surface thereof, and on UA l said characters I arrange a series of protuberances or ornaments, a a, which serve to embellish and impart a ne appearance Yto the same. The parts or sections A A are joined together by means of a shoulder, C, sunken on the edge of one part, which receives and supports the free edge ofthe next part; and by these means the sign receives a smooth or even surface. The body or ground of my sign is obscured by means of a layer, b, of paint or other material of an opaque nature, which is applied on its rear or unexposed surface when a glass ground is used, omitting the letters or characters B, which are left transparent; and by these means and by means of the knobs or buttons or ornaments a a said letters are renderedvery distinct and ornamental.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The letters or figures of a sign made of a transparent material, with the protuberances a a, with or without the shoulder C, the ground portion of said letters or figures being covered with the material b, substantially as herein shown, for the purpose specified.
