IMITATION OF MOSAIC FOR JEWELRY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 227,377, dated May 11, 1880.

Of the said drawings, Figures 1, 2,3, 4, 5, and
6 are front elevations of different designs for the application of the mosaic figures hereinafter described. Fig. 7 is a rear elevation of the piece shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section of the piece shown in Fig. 7, displaying the pieces cemented at the back of the front plate, and which said pieces give the mosaic effect.
Thefront plate, A, in each instance is to be made of either cast or blown transparent glass,
and the front face of the same may, of course,
be made either flat, with straight or beveled edges, or convex, concave, or any other form desired, and terminating in any shaped contour or outline.
The piece A, though transparent, or nearly so, may be of any color, and on the back of this piece the outline of any desired figure, B, may be traced out in the line a. The figure or figures B may be that of a head, flower, or any other ornament, and this figure or figures, whatever it or they may be, will be simply outlined on the back of the piece A by means of a contour line or lines, a, the line or lines a being painted, printed, or otherwise put upon the back of the piece A, either with gold, bronze, or any other desirable color or material, which may be heated, enameled, or burned in to make it stick; or the line amay be stamped or molded into the substance of the piece A in any suitable manner.
(ModeL) The field a, which forms all of the surface of the back part of the piece A which is not covered by the figure B, will be colored or coated black or any other color, so as to render it opaque, and then, after this coloring or coating shall have dried, pieces 0, of mother-ofpearl, silver or gold leaf, or any other suitable material, will be cemented to the back of the piece A directly over the figures B, using for this purpose any suitable transparent cement or adhesive substance that will securely fix the piece or pieces 0 to the piece A, and after these pieces 0 are so fixed to the piece A the front face of the said piece A will present the appearance of inlaid or mosaic work.
After the piece or pieces 0 shall have been securely cemented or fastened to the back of the piece A, as above described, the whole of the hack of the piece A and the pieces 0 will be coated or covered with paint, paper, metal, waterproofing of any kind, or any other suitable material which can be securely fixed to the backs of the said pieces A and G, and thereby secure them from injury of any kind.
The pieces A thus prepared and ornamented may be put into suitable settings for sleevebuttons, breast-pins, ear-rings, and such other like ornaments.
Having described my invention, I claim- As an article of manufacture, an imitation mosaic gem consisting of a transparent front or face plate of glass, said plate being provided with an opaque border and with an outlined center figure, and a mosaic center figure formed of pieces of mother-of-pearl, or its equivalent, cemented to said face-plate at the back thereof, the back of the imitation gem thus formed being provided with a protective coating, substantially as described.
