UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MOSES HOUSMAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEIV YORK.
COLORED TRANSPARENCY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,120, dated June 14, 1892.
Application filed February 18, 1892. Serial 110.421.995. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, MosEs IIOUSMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the countyof Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Colored lransparencies, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in a base of pliable or plastic material provided with metallic leaf and embossed or pressed with a suitable design and having a transparent colored covering, as set forth in the following specification and claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the design. Fig. 2 is a section along a: to, Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. l with the transparent covering removed. Fig. 4 is a section along y y, Fig. 3.
In the drawings the letter A indicates a base of pliable or flexible material, such as card-board or pulp or other material capable of being embossed or pressed. This base or support A is provided with metallic leaf or with foil 13 and is embossed or pressed with a suitable design, letter, or other configuration 0. The leaf or foil 13 may cover only the design 0 or extend beyond the latter, as desired. The stamping or embossing I have found is advantageously accomplished by suitable heated dies. A drawing or outline of the design or ornamentation O is then made on a transparent cover I), such as glass, mica, or the like, and such drawing or outline or certain parts thereof are provided with one or more colors. This transparent cover, bearing the design partly or wholly colored, as aforesaid, is then properly adjusted on the base A, so that the colored part or parts on the transparent cover will either partly or wholly cover the design or figure O, and the latter, showing either in whole or in part through the colored transparent cover D, will produce a pleasing elfect, while said cover forms protection for the design.
In producing the colored transparency D, I can employ any well-known method of coloring-such, for example, as free-hand coloring, stenciling, or color-printing on transparentpaper. A quick Way of operating I have found is to cut a stencil corresponding to the design C and use said stencil in blacking or coloring the transparent surface or cover D to produce the design thereupon.
By this invention I obtain a combination 0 pressed and colored work which gives a pleasing effect. The coloring of the cover D might also be accomplished by means of colored transfer-paper previously provided with the desired color or colors. The invention can i be used in the manufacture of decorations, signs, mottoes, advertisements, and other ob jects.
The design C may be either raised or depressed, as desired, and the colored transpar ency D can be secured in place by any suitable fastening-as, for example, by an adhesive or by framing or securing the edges of the transparency D to the edges of base A or by the application of any other suitable clasp or fastening device.
I am aware that veneering has been com posed of metal foil having a back of cement and a brilliant front surface, to which is ap plied transparent varnish; but my invention differs therefrom in that my transparent cover is provided with a design partly or wholly colored, and this cover, bearing the design, is then properly adjusted upon the ornamental design of metal leaf previously applied to the ,8o plastic or flexible base.
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a flexible or plastic base embossed with an ornamental design, of a metallic leaf 011 the embossed part and a transparent cover provided with a colored de- I sign and adjusted over the metal leaf, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MOSES I-IOUSMAN. Witnesses:
WILLIAM SORHEFSKY, E. F. KASTENHUBER.
