Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE HENRY MADDIN AND GEORGE SELMAN, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
EMBOSSED SIGN-LETTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,980, dated December 19, 1893. Application filed september 27, 1892. Serial No. 447,052. (No model.) Patented in England June 6, 1891, No- 9,648.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, GEORGE HENRY MAD- DIN and GEORGE SELMAN, subjects of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at London, England, have invented a new and useful Improved Manufacture of Embossed Letters, (for which a patent has been granted to us in Great Britain, No. 9,648, dated the 6th day of June, 1891,) of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates to an improved manufacture of embossed letters.
In carrying out our invention We take a sheet of cardboard, leather, bookbinders cloth or other soft material and place over the same gold or silver leaf and by means of heated dies we emboss upon the surface the required design or ornamentation.
The dies which we use for the embossing and stamping are preferably composed of hard type metal (pho'sporbronze) the surfaces of which have formed or engraved upon them designs corresponding to those to be produced upon the letters. The letters are then cutout as required by suitable cutters, a margin being left around the embossed part.
Our invention will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation, and, Figs. 2 and 3 are sections on the lines a: a: and y y respectively of Fig, 1 of a letter manufactured according to our invention.
It will be observed that the letter shown has a series of pyramidal hollows or recesses a formed in its surface, and that around the edges thereof a margin or bead b is left. As
the sides or surfaces of these pyramidal recesses are faced with gold or silver leaf, it will be readily understood that the light falling upon them will be reflected and so give the letter a very bright appearance Instead of making the design of pyramidal form it may be of any other desirable shape and either in intaglio or relief and faced with any color instead of with gold or silver.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of our said invention and in what manner the same is to he performed, we declare that what we claim is- 1. A letter for signs, made of card-board or its described equivalent soft material, surfaced as set forth with a light-reflecting colored material, and having such surface embossed in a series of hollows or recesses ex.- tending over the whole outer or exposed face of the letter as set forth.
2. A letter for signs made of a suitable nonmetallic material as set forth, surfaced with gold or silver leaf and having the body of such surfaced letter embossed not only with a series of hollows or recesses as set forth, but also with a projecting head around the outermost edges of the letter, all as shown and described GEORGE HENRY MADDIN. GEORGE SELMAN.
