PAUL J. STUPARICI-I, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
PHoToeRAPl-ue MOUNT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 593,036, dated November 2V, 1897.
Application led Gotober A1S, 1896. Serial No, 6(l8,756.V (No model.) Y
To all whom it 4may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL J. STUPARTCH, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco,State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Photographic Mounts and Processes of Making the Same; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in Which- Figure l represents a view of a die used for carrying out my invention. Fig. 2 is a vien7 of one of the mounts. Fig. 3 is another form of die. Fig. 4 is a mount produced from said die.
My invention relates to photographic cardmounts, art-panels, and analogous articles and to the process of producing the same; and it consists in the improved card, mount, or panel and the process of making the same, as I shall hereinafter describe and claim.
.In this art it is common to make photographic card-mounts, art-panels, (fue, having a tinted surface and afterward applying to such tinted surface letters or Words giving the name and address of the user of the card in a different color. This has usually been done in two operations, one consisting in tintingthe card and the other in applying upon the tinted surface the printed letters or other matter in French chalk or any substance which can be used for the purpose and which has suficientbody and adherence to make distinct letters. This necessitates two operations for each card or mount. In my invention I apply the desired tint to certain parts of a white-surfaced card and simultaneously raise or elevate other portions of the card di rectly from its surface and without applying the tint to such raised surfaces.
In carrying out my invention I take a plate A of the proper size and cut out its center to correspond With a central panel Which I desire to emboss on the central part of the card or mount, and I engrave the desired letters or characters in the plate in intaglio, as shown at a, and may also en grave or out in said plate a border-line, as shown at b. If the card or mount is to be formed with an elevated or embossed central panel c, as shown in Fig. 2, I cut out the center ofthe die or plate to correspond With said central panel, and the tint which is Vto be given those portions of the card or mount corresponding to the solid or plane portions of the die or plate is applied to the surface of the die or plate so that it Will not enter the engraved intaglio portions thereof. The card or mount,witl1 the die and a counter, is then placed ina press of sufficient power and the embossing and tinting of the card take place simultaneously, the central panel of the card or mount and the engraved intaglio portions being raised out of the body of the card or mount and made to stand in relief upon the card and to have the original color thereof, While the remaining vportions of the card or mount will simultaneouslytake the tint that has lbeen applied to the solidv portions of the die. IVhen the card or mount is removed, it Will be found to have, for instance, a raised or embossed central White panel and White letters or characters and border-line, if desired, While the remaining portions of z its surface appear tinted. Thus in one operation I produce a card or mount With embossed portions raised directly from its surface and out of the librous material of the card itself and of one color, While the remaining portions of the card are tinted and of a different color..
In Figs. 3 and L1 the die D and card or mount E omit the central panel, but other- Wise the results are the same as before described.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an article of manufacture, a mount designed for the reception of a photograph, said mount having an embossed conventional central panel and embossed Words or characters and having remaining portions tinted, the embossing of the panel and of the Words or characters being'done simultaneously with each other and with the application of the tint to said remaining portions whereby the embossed portions retain the original color of the mount and are displayed prominently upon a field of a contrasting color.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
F. J. STUPARlOI-l. Nitnessesz S. H. NOURSE,
.Tessin C. Enorm.
