Specification of Letters Patent.

sign and it comprises a backing sheet having a coating of adhesive material adaptedto temporarily hold the sign characters which. are provided'upon their outer faces with a coating of adhesive material, by means of which ythey may be transferred to glass or other material.
The invention may be further briefly summarized as consisting in the construction and combination" of parts hereinafter set forth in the following description, drawings and claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a sign, arranged according to my invention; Fig. 2 is a view showing a piece of glass with the sign in the process of application; Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the piece of glass showing the sign applied with the packing sheet partially re-` moved, and also showing the several layers of material, but omitting the embossing of the backing sheet, which would be imperceptible on the scale of this view; Fig. 4 is an enlarged view showingfa portion of a sheet of embossed paper used in a modified form'y of the invention, and Fig. 5 is a sec; tional. view of a portion of a sheet of the same embossed paper showing the charactersapplied.-
In the drawings 1 represents a portion of a window. pane, or a pieceof any transparent material such as glass.
The sign comprises a temporary backing sheet 2 of embossed paper or other material having upon the face thereof a coating 3 of adhesive material adapted to temporarily hold in. pla-ce suitable sign characters 4. 'The embosslng is shown on a magnified scale in Fig. 5, the paper being pressed or rolled in dies to form successiveprominences and valleys or depressions, as will be readily understood. The adhesive 3 is, of course, applied to the entire surface of the embossed sheet but it does not take such a good hold of the sign characters at the valleys or depressions as it does at the prominences. The sign characters therefore may be peeled off more readily fromthe embossed sheet. than from a backing sheet having a continuous smooth surface. Each of the sign characters is provided, upon its outer face, with a coat-l ing 5 of adhesive material adapted to adhere to glass or other transparent material, or to )hold sufficiently so that the temporary 'backing sheet may be removed thus leaving the signcharacters applied to the glass or other material.
Having described my invention, I claim A paper sign, comprising a backing sheet of embossed paper, paper sign characters temporarily secured to said embossed sheet by a. layer of adhesive material lying between the sign characters and the embossed sheet, and a coating of adhesivel material upon the exposed face ofthe sign characters.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses as follows:
