ATTORNEY.
" STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IILLIAM HEEREN, 0F PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
SIGN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 657,217, dated September- 4, 1900.
Application tiled July 27, 1897. Serial No. 646,065. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known thatLWrLLrAM HEEEEN,a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in signs, and has for its.
object to construct asign of pliable materials to permit its being bent into any shape desired.
The invention further aims to construct a sign which will be strong, durable, effectual in its appearance, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture; andthe invention further aims to produce a sign which Will be weatherproof.
'With the above and other objects in view the invention finally consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like figures of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views,in which- Figure l is a front view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on line X X of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is aback View showing parts cut away. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on line Y Y of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, l designates the body of the sign, composed of celluloid, and 2 the sign letter, character, or the like.
3 designates lugs or projections.
4 designates a backing of pliable material,
preferablylead, which also serves as a backing of the sign.
5 designates a sheet of rubber.
In constructing the sign the letters, characters, or the like having a coating of adhesive material on the back are arranged in the desired design. A. sheet of celluloid is placed on the design, the letters adheringto the celluloid. Over the celluloid is placed a thin sheet of rubber, and a sheet of lead forming the backing is placed over the rubber sheet. The sign, as above built up, is placed in a frame of metal corresponding to shape and size of the sign and placed upon a highlypolished heated surface, and when force is applied to the backing the celluloid, having been made soft and pliable bythe action of the heat, will be pressed flush with the face of the sign-letters by the metallic backing 4. The action of the heat upon the sheet of rubber eements the celluloid and pliable plunger or the backin g firmly together. Furthermore, by one action, as above described, a finished polished article is made.
In large signs lugs 3 are used to fasten the letter to the backing; but I do not claim the lugs as a novel feature of my invention.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction Without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-z- The herein-described method for manufacturing signs Which consists in first providing a metallic plate with a suitable open design and coating one of its faces With an adhesive material then placing the same on a heated block, second applying to the coated face thereof a celluloid Wafer, third applying to the back face of the celluloid wafer a thin Sheet of rubber, fourth applying to the sheet of rubber a suitable backing of a exible lnetallic plate and fifth in compressing the said parts together to force a portion of said celluloid into the open design to form the iinished sign, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM HEEREN.
