DIE FOR MANUFACTURING CARDS FOR PHOTOGRAPHIC MOUNTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 575,814, dated January 26, 1897.

To all wiz/0m it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PAUL J. STUPARICH, a citizen of the United States, residing `in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Dies for Manufacturing Cards for Photographic Mounts; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates especially to improvements in the dies for the manufacture of cards for photographic mounts, art-panels,and oth er similar purposes.
It consists, essentially, in the novel composite die hereinafter described, by which the various surfaces of the card may be easily and cheaply formed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view of my die. Fig. 2 is a section of the same on line y 'y of Fig. l. Fig. 3 shows a card made by my process.
Cards for photographic mounts or art-panels are made in many forms, in one of which is shown a central smooth panel, a surrounding depressed channel, and an exterior roughened surface. These cards have hitherto been made by manufacturing a metal die for each size and shape of card which may be desired, the outer part of the surface of the die being engraved so as to form the rough surface of the card, an inner smooth central surface, and an intermediate raised rib to form the depressed channel between the two.
In my invention I take a card orsurface A of any suitable material and of such size as may be desired. I then take a sheet of sandpaper B, or other rough-surfaced material, and fasten it by gluing or otherwise to the face of the surface A. I next take a frame C, of metal or other hard material and of the proper shape and size to surround the central panel or interior space and of such width and thickness as may be desired for the proposed depressed channel which is to surround the central panel, and glue it to the prepared card A so that it is interposed between the eXterior roughened surface and the interior panel, thus leaving the smooth panel D in the center. The die is then ready for use and may be employed in conjunction with a press of any suitable character by which sufficient power may be applied to properly impress its surfaces upon those of the cards or mounts which are to be made thereby.
It will be found that the sandpapered surface answers perfectly as a guide to form the roughened outer surface of the card, while the metal plate surrounding the interior panel or smooth portion of the card will form the depressed channel by which it is desired to surround the panel.
Any of the numberless sizes which are perpetually required in the business can be readily made by simply cutting the base plate or card to the desired size, covering it with a sheet of sandpaper lof any desired coarseness of surface, then applying the peripheral metallic margin to form a surrounding depression, and then cutting out the sandpaper to form the central panel.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An improved die for the manufacture of photographic mounts and art-panels, consisting of a card or base having a central panelspace, a separate roughened surface secured to said card or base and a separate hard rim surrounding the periphery of the panel-space and secured to said card or base.
2. A die for the production of photographic card-mounts and art-panels, consisting of a card or base having an independent surface of roughened material secured thereto, a central panel formed by removing a portion of the roughened material, and a previously-formed and separate hard rim disposed around the periphery of the panel, whereby an exterior roughened surface and interior panel and intermediate depressed channel are formed upon the card when exposed to the pressure of the die.
