SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,589, dated August 28, 1888.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES SCHWARTZ,- of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement i n the Art ofOrnamenting Cards, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to the method or process of ornamenting card-board with letters or designs, or both, for forming show, gift, or sign-cards; and the invention consists in cutting the ornament in a die and at the same time applying it to the surface of the main card.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding partsin all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a die-bed having letters formed in relief upon it. Fig. 2 is a detailed sectional view of the same, taken on the line 00 00 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a card ornamented with a letter.
A represents the card to be ornamented, in this instancewith raised letters B, cut from the sheet (J, of gold, silver, or other ornamental paper. The letters to be applied to the card A are formed upon one surface of the die D in relief, the edges of the letter lgeing sharpened and raised, asshown at a,
A is then placed upon the sheet 0, with the surface of the sheet to be ornamented upon the sheet 0. Then a heavy pressure is applied to the card A which causes the sharp edges 11 of the die to cut through the sheet 0. The portions thus cut out from the sheet 0 are supported upon the raised surfaces 0 and receive heavy pressure, applying them firmly to the card A, and at the same time the sharp edges a penetrate the sheet A about the ornamentations, as shown at c, Fig. 3, so that the letter is given an effective relief and sharp outline. The surface d being on a lower level than the surface a, the waste or main part of the sheet O is protected from pressure, so that it does not adhere to the card A.
Instead of ornamenting the card A with letters I- may in like manner ornament it with any fancy design which I may choose to form on the face of the die D.
-Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The method herein described of ornamenting cards in relief, which consists in placinga sheet of ornamental paper coated with adhesive material in a die having raised letters or ornaments with sharp and raised cutting-edges, then placing the sheet to be ornamented upon the coated surface of the ornamental paper and subjecting both to a heavy pressure, thus cutting and sticking the latter to the sheet all at one and the same operation, as described.
