AM PHnra-umosnAPH/c co. N. xmsenmvsls maegss) 4 WILLIAM X. STEVENS, OF EAST BROOKFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
INIKPRQVEMEN T IN DOMINOS.
. 139,928, dated June 17, 1873; application filed March 15, 1873.
' dominos or cards so shaped and marked on their faces .that they may be matched, one
f with another, at three or more of their sides in playing. The second part of my invention relates to marking and ornamenting dominos by stamping into their faces sheet material of a different color from the blocks, as hereinafter set forth.
Figure lis a plan of one form, (hexagonah) of my dominos as used in playing a game I have invented, called tip-top.7 Figs. 2, 3,
' and 4i indicate some of the forms to which my invention may be applied.
These, and pieces of many other forms, both as dominos and cards, marked with any suitable characters, may be made according to my invent-ion, by placing some character on each side or edge of the piece, so that the piece may be matched at three or more sides by similar pieces, forming figures like patchwork. The old style of dominos is marked to be matched only at two ends, so as to increase the forming iigure only in length, while my dominos, being marked at three or more sides, match so as to form a ligure of both length and breadth. When made as cards, they are printed in the usual Way. When made as dominos, they may be made by any usual process; but I make them of wood by shaping strips to the right form and cutting the dominos off from the end of the strip so that the thickness of the domino is lengthwise with the grain. Then they are smoothed and colored, after which comes the marking, wherein consists the second feature of my invention, as follows I use a steel stamp with figures raised in relief, corresponding to the markings desired on the face of the domino. I lay a sheet of card-board over the domino, and with the stamp punch the card directly into the domino, the stamp cutting the card against the domino, and bedding the cut pieces of card into the domino, for figuring and ornamentation.
I do not limit myself to the use of wood as abody to be stamped in this manner, or to there are many materials that may be thus the marking and ornamentation by thus stamping; but- What I claim as my invention, and Wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. Dominos or cards polygonal in form, having their faces marked near their side edges with characters or iigures matchable, one with another, at three or more of the sides so marked, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The method of marking dominos by means of sheet material stamped upon and into their faces, substantially in the manner described and set forth.
