Description

No; 708,675. Patented Sept. 9, I902.
P. J. STUPARICH. DEVICE FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF PHOTOGRAP HIG CARD MOUNTS.
(Application filed Jan. 20, 1902,)
(No ModeD' UNITED STATES PAUL'J. STUPARIOH, on SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
DEVICE FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF PHOTOGRAPHIC CARD-MOUNTS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 708,675, dated September 9, 1902.
Application filed January 20. 1902. $eria1 No- 90,177. (No model.) I
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL J. STUPARIOH, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Devices for the Manufacture of Photographic Card-Mounts; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the same.
My invention relates to a device which is designed for the manufacturing of ornamental photographic card-mounts in a single oporation.
It consists of a punch and die by which the center of the card is punched out to form the opening for the reception of the picture and a supplemental annular die fitting around the shank of the punch having its face adapted to form an ornamental border around the opening simultaneously with the formation of the opening itself.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a central section of die and a partial central section and side View of punch. Fig. 2 shows a perspective View of punch. Fig. 3 shows a finished card.
Itis the object of myinvention to produce cards ready to receive photographic pictures by punching the central opening of the desired shape and ornamenting the periphery of the opening at a single operation.
In order to manufacture cheap photographic cards, such as are known as pen nymounts, it is customary to punch the desired oval, heart-shaped, or other opening through the center of the card and then to emboss or ornament the periphery of the opening by a subsequent operation. A thin paper having a gummed face has its upper edge attached to the back of the card, the paper extending down behind the opening, and the small pictures are placed on the back of the card, and by moistening the thin flap and'pasting it down the picture is firmly securedin place. In order to produce these cards at such a an annular ring 4, the upper surface of which abuts against the larger portion 5 of the punch-shank. The lower face of the ring 4 has the embossing devices engraved upon it, as at 6, these devices being of any suitable character. The card being then placed upon the surface of the die, with the center over the die-opening 2, the punch is manipulated by any suitable or well-known means for the purpose, and the center of the card is punched out and at the same movement the embossed surface 6 of the ring-die is forced down upon the periphery or margin around the opening, thus embossing it with the desired ornamentation. The ring being removably fitted to the punch, it will be seen that any change may be made int-he embossing of the cards.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,-is-
Adevice for simultaneously punching and embossing, photographic mounts, consisting of a stationary die having a plain surface, and a central opening, a reciprocating block having its lower end turned down to form a punch which fits said opening, and a remov- 8o able embossing-ring embracing the punch and resting against the shoulder of said turneddown portion of the block.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
PAUL JjsTUPARICIl.
